The biggest online retailer among Mississippi residents will soon be forced to collect state sales tax. The move could also benefit local retailers by helping drive those residents looking for a break away from the glowing screen and back into small hometown businesses. The Associated Press reported Wednesday Mississippi Revenue Commissioner Herb Frierson announced Amazon would begin collecting Mississippi’s 7 percent sales tax beginning Feb. 1. Frierson also said the department earlier filed to implement an administrative rule that would require all companies making more than $250,000 in sales in Mississippi each year to collect the state sales tax and remit it to the state, whether they sell by Internet, paper catalog or both. Companies would be required to start collecting the tax beginning July 1, assuming the rule completes the review process required under the administrative procedures act. Rep. Nick Bain (D-Alcorn) said this is not a new tax, but

Ticket sales have been brisk for next week’s Alcorn County Delta Waterfowl Banquet. The Corinth Kiwanis Club is entering the final full week of early ticket sales for the upcoming 6th Annual FatherDaughter Ball. Event chairperson Ken Weeden said this week sales have been ahead of previous years. “This may be our biggest

year ever, which would be great,” said Weeden. “The more dads or father-figures and daughters we can make happy with the special night the better. Plus everything we raise goes to help a good cause.” The local civic club has given funds raised from the ball to several charities in the past, including Excel By 5, the

Demonstrating a profound love for his country, a Corinth High School senior is bound for the U.S. Naval Academy. The Corinth School District has proudly announced that Rhett Robinson of Corinth recently received an appointment to the academy for the fall of 2017. “I am pleased to have nominated Rhett Robinson to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. and am thrilled he has received an early appointment,” said U.S. Senator

People of the Crossroads Joe Caldwell, Corinth From wildlife hunting to relic hunting, the many hunting hobbies of 61-yearold Joe Caldwell keep him busy on the weekends. Other days he’s even busier holding down the fort as caretaker of the court at the Alcorn County Courthouse. He acts as circuit clerk and county registrar and also manages county marriage licenses and voter polls. In his 18th year, he said he still “loves meeting new people ... I’ve made a lot of new friends. It’s been good. God has been good to me and so have the people of Alcorn County.” Married to Amanda for nine years, Caldwell has three children, Natalie, Morgan and Ben, who is currently the Alcorn County sheriff. Caldwell also has four grandchildren. The couple are members of First Baptist Church.
