Thieves steal Scout trailer
Industrial Park ‘fiber ready’
BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Boy Scout Troop 123 is in need of more camping gear. The local troop saw all of its equipment stolen over the weekend when its trailer was taken. “They took everything,” said assistant scout master Keith Windham. “The police told me it happens all the time.” The 7x16 LoadRunner trailer – with a license plate of 4135P – was taken from Christ United Methodist Church sometime Friday night, according to
Windham. “It was there at 5:45 p.m. Friday,” said Windham. “I noticed it gone Saturday morning.” The 2007 trailer – which the troop had since 2008 – isn’t covered by insurance, according to Windham. Several tents, stoves, coolers, axes and shovels were all stored in the trailer. “We have started a GoFundMe fundraising account,” said Windham. “We hope to raise enough to buy some more gear.” Troop 123 is comprised of 35 boys ages 11-17.

Emergency official preaches fire safety

When competing for industry, local officials can now promote the Corinth-Alcorn Industrial Park as ready to provide high-speed fiber Internet service. Representatives of AT&T and local leaders gathered Monday morning to announce that the park has been certified as “AT&T fiber ready” with fiber infrastructure in place. The Corinth Board of Mayor and Aldermen previously entered a promotional agreement with AT&T for the fiber designation. AT&T Mississippi President Mayo Flynt said it is the first such certification in the state and one that allows economic developers to assure industrial
prospects “that they can check the box for Internet connectivity and have the latest and greatest access to communications services here at the CorinthAlcorn Industrial Park.” Alliance President Gary Chandler said prospects are increasingly asking questions about fiber availability. “It arms my group with an additional tool in our toolbox,” said Chandler, “for marketing sites and buildings in this industrial park to potential clients and saying, ‘AT&T designates this park as fiber-ready.’ That means something, anytime you have a designation like that, and you can quantify what it is.” Mayor Tommy Irwin is pleased to see AT&T sweeten
the deal for prospects looking at Corinth. “Anything that enhances investment in our community, brings jobs to our community, that’s what we’re all about,” he said. AT&T invested $950 million in Mississippi from 2012 to 2014, according to Flynt. “But that investment is not always obvious,” he said. “A lot of it is below the ground.” The promotional agreement with Corinth involves no cost to the city. It is for a term of one year but continues until either party terminates. The city agrees to provide AT&T’s contact information to prospective tenants and to share contact information with AT&T of those who lease or purchase property.

Always think safety. Those are the words of Alcorn County Emergency Services Coordinator Ricky Gibens when it comes to potential house fires. The county suffered its first fire deaths of the year when a Rienzi couple were killed in a house fire on Jan. 17. “The main thing is to have smoke detectors,” said Gibens. “Smoke detectors save lives.” Gibens recommends smoke detectors be placed near the kitchen, laundry room, all bedrooms and on every level of the
home. According to the Red Cross, 60 percent of house fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms. Gibens also advises each family to come up with an escape plan should a fire happen. “Make an escape plan to meet at a place outside like the mailbox,” he said. Should a fire occur, people are instructed to get out and do not go back into the burning house. “It is better to crawl out at the Please see SAFETY | 2
Public quick to assist animal shelter in need BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com
Humans have great compassion for the homeless animals in Alcorn County. Evidence came following the publication of a Daily Corinthian story and editorial less than two weeks ago. It was learned then the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter was in desperate need of donations to help feed and clean animals who call the shelter their temporary home. The public responded – by the thousands. “Since the story ran in the newspaper, people have been
bringing us stuff nonstop,” said Volunteer Director Charlotte Doehner. “It has been like a continuous gift from God – we are blessed beyond belief.” Since Jan. 7, the shelter has received more than 1,600 pounds of dog food and 700 pounds of cat food. “This could not have came at a better time,” added Doehner. “We have seen an increase in animal intakes and we continue to operate at or above full capacity. The donations we have received will help us keep the doors open and keep our ani-
