Heroin incidents prompt concerns BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Two deaths related to heroin use and a recent distribution arrest is prompting concern that the drug is seeing a resurgence in the Corinth area.
Detective Capt. Ralph Dance of the Corinth Police Department said police responded to two calls of possible fatal overdoses last weekend. “We do believe both died of a heroin overdose,” said Dance.
“We are investigating who gave them the drugs.” Police also made an arrest involving heroin on Friday, Jan. 17. Eric Smith, 37, of Borroum Circle, Corinth, was stopped for reckless driving on Highway 72.
Police searched the vehicle and found three small foil-wrapped packets of heroin. Police arrested Smith and charged him with possession of heroin with intent to distribute. Police also seized a 1999 Lex-
us sport utility vehicle. The detective said he hadn’t seen heroin in the area in 24 years. “It is concerning that we are Please see HEROIN | 3A

FARMINGTON — Just Kids 1 got its third star. The Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute informed the childcare and learning center it had achieved “Star Step 3” of the Mississippi Child Care Quality Step System. Just Kids 1, located on 13 County Road 217-A, becomes the first childcare center to become a 3-Star facility in Alcorn County. “We were really close to a five,” said director Tonia Fowler. “The only thing that kept us from it
was we do not have a teacher with a two-year degree on staff.” The child care facility, which also offers Pre-K, After School and Summer Program instruction, received an overall score of 4.64. “I was ecstatic when I got the letter,” said Fowler, director of Just Kids 1 for three years. “They require above and beyond the licensing requirements, but it’s worth it.” In order to receive a 3-star rating a childcare facility must Please see 3 STARS | 2A Staff photo by Steve Beavers

Former Corinthian going for gold in winter Olympics BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
Creveling
Chris Creveling practically skated out of the womb. Now preparing to represent his country at the Winter Olympics in Russia as a short track ice speedskater, the 28-year-old former Corinthian hails from a skating rink family who ran Corinth’s Skateland from about 1988
to 1993. The youngster on skates was a familar sight at the roller rink. “I remember having a blast anytime I went in there,” Creveling said by phone from Utah during his last days before heading out of the country. He recalled the Saturday pizza parties, shimmying under the limbo stick, Please see CREVELING | 3A
Noyes, Sweat head Valentine’s show Lenten Luncheons slated BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
A couple of Corinth artists will be showing some love for the local crowd on Valentine’s Day. Maty Noyes and Light Beam Rider lead vocalist Thomas Sweat will be part of a threeband performance on Feb. 14 at the Crossroads Arena. Gnarly Charlies, from Florence, Ala., is set to open for the two. “Light Beam Rider’s songs are full of interesting transitions and lyrics about finding one’s place in the world,” said Noyes. “They tour around the
south and play post-rock and prog-pop type music.” Other than Sweat, the remaining members of the band include: Jesse Sutton, bass guitar; Daniel Sowards, lead guitar; and Ian Manus, drums. Some of the songs written by the group are Dexter’s Meth Lab, A Song About Some Byrdz, Martha Wiles, Hash Driveway and My Name Is Thunder. According to their website, the band is very far from the typical Southern sound. They have been influenced by the guitar harmonies of the Allman Brothers Band along with the heavy echoes of British Math

The start of a season tradition at a local church will come a month later this year. The 34th Annual Lenten Luncheons held at First United Methodist Church are slated to begin March 5 following a February start the last two years. Six lunches are on tap with the event extending into April each Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. “The United Methodist Women are looking forward to Lenten Lunches again this year,” said Brenda Childs.
“Each Wednesday will consist of a different speaker and lovely music during the six lunches.” Ash Wednesday kicks off the Easter tradition of spiritual renewal and fellowship. Lent is the Christian observance of the liturgical year from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday. It ends April 17 this year during the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus. Cost of lunch is $6 with proceeds going to support local and Please see LUNCHES | 3A
