Basket fund continues to increase The spirit of giving this New Year is alive and well in the Alcorn County area. Donations are still needed this year for the 19th Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund. A $25,000 fundraising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets could be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 6. Baskets were given away based upon faith the goal will be reached. So far, $19,529 has been raised, meaning $5,471 still needs to be raised to make the goal. The deadline to give has been extended to Friday, Jan. 16 Contributions to the Christmas Basket Fund can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person or persons. The tribute will be published in the Daily Corinthian. Donations can be brought by the newspaper office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or mailed to: Daily Corinthian, Attn.: Christmas Basket Fund, P.O. Box 1800, Corinth, MS 38835.

A Prentiss County man has been charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of his mother. Letha C. Pace, 85, was found dead of a gunshot wound Wednesday afternoon in the home she shared with her son, 54-year-old John Ed

Inman at 875 Highway 4 East near New Site, said Prentiss County Sheriff Randy Tolar. Inman was arrested at the scene and is being held in the Prentiss County Jail. He is expected to make an initial appearance in court and have a bond set tomorrow.

Deputies responding to a 911 call reporting a shooting at the address found Inman sitting inside an idling car in the driveway. After securing him they entered the home and discovered Pace. Coroner Greg Sparks pronounced her dead at the scene. Tolar said no motive has yet been determined for the shooting.

Moonshine still busted BY JEFF YORK For the Daily Corinthian

A Stantonville man has been arrested and charged with being an unregistered sex offender and selling untaxed alcohol believed to be ‘moonshine.’ Law enforcement officers were tipped off about the illegal alcohol by an online ad on Craigslist. Travis Gillespie (aka Travis Johnson) was arrested at his residence at Gillespie 2131 Race Path Road in Stantonville by Tennessee Alcohol Beverage Commission Special Agent B.V. Cathy III and McNairy County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Brad Johnson during an undercover operation. Gillespie sold approximately six gallons of untaxed liquor/alcohol believed to be “moonshine.” Gillespie’s wife, Heather Johnson, signed a consent to search of the residence. Johnson and Gillespie told the officers they were married and he was in the process of changing his last name to Johnson, according to a press release from the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department. This still allegedly used to make moonshine was discovered during a search of the suspect’s home. whiskey still, and approximately eight gallons of unknown liquids believed to be untaxed whiskey or “moonshine.” The officers discovered in the residence a Lorcin .22 cal pistol, a Mossberg 715T and a .22 caliber rifle in a case in the master bedroom. Gillespie had personal belongings including multiple drawers of clothes in the house to indicate he lived there. He is a convicted felon for theft $1,000 to $10,000 in Hardeman County, Tenn. Gillespie was also convicted of sexual exploitation of a minor and is required to be monitored on the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry. He has not changed his location of the Sex offender registry address to the 2131 Race Path Rd. address.

Gillespie was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon, failure to register (sex offender), receive/possess/transport untaxed alcohol, manufacture of alcohol, transport/ possessing untaxed alcohol (over 5 gallons), possession of a still, and storage of liquor for sale. The ad on Craigslist said “#getyourshine on for NYE (selmertn) before new years sale from now until new years. Moonshine half gallon 30$ gallon 60$ quarts $20, get it while it lasts, in flavors: apple pie, banana, blackberry, peach strawberry, and strawberry, and straight, get the word out if you know anybody, volume discounts on big sales, 15 percent off a single purchase of 3 gallons or more.”

A Middleton man has been arrested in connection with the recent bank robbery at Home Banking Company in Selmer. The robbery happened at the bank on Jan. 5. Marty Holland was arrested Thursday afternoon at his home by the Hardeman County Sheriff’s De- Holland partment based on outstanding warrants in their county. Selmer Assistant Police Chief Kim Holley and Investigator Jamie Lowrance went to Hardeman County to place the bank robbery charges against Holland. Holland was charged in the bank robbery based on evidence found which includes the vehicle used in the robbery and money recovered from the robbery that was affirmatively matched to the currency stolen from the bank. He is the person investigators believe that came into the bank with the gun. Holland is now in the Hardeman County Jail and will be transported to the McNairy County Jail after he posts bond in Hardeman County. The 30th Annual Alcorn County Wildlife Tasting Supper gives folks a chance to try all kinds of tasty treats from the wild on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the Crossroads Arena. “The supper offers people a chance to fellowship with others who they might not have seen in a while,” said Sandy Mitchell with the Alcorn County Soil and Water Conservation District. “You can here all kinds of stories during the night.” Alcorn County Soil and Water Conservation District along with the Mississippi Forestry Commission, Mississippi State Extension Service, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and USDA - Natural Resources Conservation Service combine to coordinate the event. Doors open at 4:45 p.m. with the door fee being one wildlife dish per person. If no dish is brought, cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12. Kids under five will be admitted free. Crossroads area concerned citizens and professionals of tourism in Northeast Mississippi gathered Thursday in Corinth for the latest in a series of meetings featuring the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area and Alliance. Setup to preserve, enhance, interpret and promote the cultural and heritage assets of the hills region, the special hills meeting offered new opportunities now available to the Mississippi Hills in regard to preservation and promotion of the areas unique heritage and cultural stories. “Our main focus is to support projects and programs that sustain the heritage tourism industry within our beautiful region,” said Corinth native Bobby King, who works as program manager for the MHNHAA. King said Corinth is a very important part of the region. “I don’t think there is another community in the 30-county hill region that has as much in place to marker,
