Legislature focuses on education BY ZACK STEEN zsteen@dailycorinthian.com

Most Mississippi lawmakers could likely agree on one thing as the 2017 Legislature session got underway this week - a change in public education funding must happen this year. House Speaker Philip Gunn and Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, both

Republicans, said they want to make changes to the 20-yearold education funding formula. Gunn said he’s looking for more efficiency, not less overall money. But EdBuild - the company hired by the state last summer to research the funding formula - said this week they

don’t anticipate recommending a reduction in spending. Any change would cause losses for some school districts and gains for others, unless lawmakers find money to increase total spending. The current formula, called the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, was put into

law 20 years ago but has been fully funded only twice. Legislators have ran a cumulative $1.9 billion short in MAEP funding since 2009. Local districts continue to suffer from the shortfall as well. In 2017, the underfunding of Please see EDUCATION | 2A

A local descendant of one of the Civil War’s most celebrated naval officers is helping to bring more authenticity to the Verandah-Curlee House.

Michael Semmes, a descendant of Confederate Admiral Raphael Semmes, donated an almost 200-year-old pair of “love seats” for the furniture collection of the historic antebellum residence.

Local officials are stressing fire safety as Mother Nature continues to weave her icy spell upon the Crossroads area. With slippery, frozen roads and frigid temperatures, many took a snow day from work and school Friday in favor of cozy, indoor warmth. While it is tempting to snuggle in for a long winter’s nap, residents should pay special attention to the fire hazards which may exist in their homes. Responding to the need for extra precautions, Commissioner of Insurance and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney is asking that all Mississippians start the New Year off by practicing heating and fire safety. “Using heating sources in a proper manner to stay warm during cold weather and having working smoke alarms in your home is literally the difference between life and death,” said Chaney. “Every home should have a working smoke alarm. Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of people dying in home fires

in half.” Fire safety education and preventing fire deaths continue to be priority goals of the State Fire Marshal’s office, which investigated over 50 reported fire deaths in 2016. While preparing for cold weather, the State Fire Marshal’s office offers the following heating safety tips: • Have a three-foot “kidfree zone” around open fires and space heaters. • Supervise children when a fireplace, fire pit, or other space heater is being used. Use a sturdy, metal screen to prevent contact burns, which are even more common than flame burns. • All heaters need space. Keep things that can burn, such as paper, bedding or furniture at least 3 feet away from heating equipment. • Use heating equipment that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory. • Never use your oven for heating. • Install stationary space heating equipment, water

Penny Stevens has worked at Avectus Healthcare Solutions for over five years. Her current position is lien coordinator. Her favorite part of the job is working with her co-workers. “We all have different teams, so your team is like a big family,” said the Stevens. “That’s my favorite part, learning about everybody’s families, births and weddings. Being part of the group is like a family.” When not at work she enjoys spending time with her husband, Blane, and their two dogs, Kansas and Coco. “I’m an only child, so my parents always say that’s their grandpuppies,” she said. Stevens, 43, graduated from Corinth High School in 1992. “I’m one of the last class that graduated from the old high school,” she pointed out. She is a member of Wheeler Grove Baptist Church.
