BY JEBB JOHNSTON After 10 years on the Corinth School District Board of Trustees, Jerry Finger is not seeking reappointment. The current term for Finger, who is president of the board, expires March 1, and members of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen are moving toward appointing a new trustee after learning this week that he plans to retire from the school board. “It’s been a great learning process for me, and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it,” Finger told the Daily Corinthian. “I’ve just reached the point where I want to pursue some other things and let someone else have an opportunity on the board.” He has been pleased with the district’s progress during his in-

Process is introduced to clubs BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Corinth’s recently commissioned comprehensive planning process is beginning to meet the public. Bob Barber of Orion Planning + Design talked about the process of building a vision for Corinth’s future at a lunch with civic club members on Thursday. It served as a sort of soft launch for what will be a lengthy process with community input. “My view of Corinth, after investigating a little more, is that you have a really vibrant community already,” said Barber. “You’ve got history that’s unparalleled. You’ve got natural resources — Pickwick and all the other places

“To be a great community, you must envision a future. There must be a practical, acceptable, reasonable way to get to the vision.” Bob Barber Orion Planning + Design around … You’ve got all the pieces there for a really, really top-shelf community.” Barber was a planning director for 25 years, the last 16 of which were in Hernando. He is proud of the success created there, with the city recognized as a “top 100 small town” by Forbes. “Much of that occurred through the way the city was

Staff reports

Two Corinth men were among five people arrested during holiday safety checkpoints last week in Tishomingo County. Mark Mathis, 42, of Corinth, and Michael Marlar, 33, of Corinth, both face drug charges after police made two separate checkpoint stops on Dec. 28. The arrests were part of multiple felony drug arrests made by Tishomingo County Sheriff’s deputies and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agents around the New Year’s holiday. Mathis was among two other people inside a vehicle when they approached a checkpoint in Burnsville. When deputies searched the vehicle, they discovered bags of methamphetamine and cocaine. All three occupants were transported to the Tishomingo County Jail. Mathis was charged with two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine and cocaine. His bond was set at $15,000. Also in the vehicle was Layla Adams, 25, of Iuka, and Holly Mullins, 25, of Booneville. Both women face two counts of felony drug charges each and were placed in jail on a $10,000 bond. All three are currently out on bond. In a second checkpoint stop on Dec. 28 in Burnsville, Marlar was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance - hydrocodone. Marlar’s bond was set at $5,000 and he is currently out on bond.

planned and developed over time,” said Barber. “It was a community effort supporting the best that the community could become.” He said it is an opportune time for Corinth to revisit its vision — the last official city plan is believed to have been done in 1963 — and its codes. People of the Crossroads Barry Richardson, Corinth Staff photo by Bobby J. Smith

Barry Richardson graduated from Alcorn Central High School in 1988. (“All of us troublemakers,” he said with a grin.) At age 16 he landed a job at Roger’s Supermarket and wound up in the produce department. Fast forward to age 46, and Richardson is now the produce manager. “I drove a truck for twenty-something years, but I’ve been back working here for two years,” he said. “After I did my other jobs and came back they came in and asked me if I wanted to be produce manager, and I said, ‘Sure, why not?’ And I’ve been jumping on it ever since.” Off the clock, Richardson enjoys spending time with family, wife Amy, daughter Anna, son John, grandson Brady and son- and daughter-in-law Bengy and Mariah. He still loves driving a Peterbilt truck and fishing as much as possible.

volvement with the district. “I’ve witnessed some things I never thought could happen in any school district as far as moving things forward,” said Finger. “With our new modified schedule and district of innovation, it’s a remarkable feat, and I credit the superintendent and his staff and the board for being able to buy into that process and see it forward. So far, it seems to be working really well.” Finger also serves on the city’s board of adjustment and planning commission. He is treasurer for the Black History Museum of Corinth and a board member of Northeast Mississippi Community Services. The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the discovery of partial human remains at a residence near Kossuth. Sheriff Ben Caldwell said the department received a call Wednesday afternoon from a County Road 510 residence where a dog had brought human remains into the yard. An initial search of the area and another search Thursday morning with a team that brought in cadaver dogs did not turn up anything else. The remains were turned over to the coroner and are to be examined at the state crime lab. “We don’t know if it’s male, female, young, old,” said Caldwell. “We don’t know for sure if it was foul play or natural causes. We’re hoping that once we get results from the crime lab, we may be able to determine identity and cause of death.” With the only certainty being that the remains are human, investigators are looking at all possibilities, including missing persons cases. It could also be a situation in which the dog found an old, forgotten gravesite, he said.
