Church offering ‘Food for the Soul’ BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

SELMER, Tenn. — Court Avenue Cumberland Presbyterian Church is putting its words into action. The church is showing the community someone cares through its “Food for the Soul” ministry. Mindy Hurst got the ball rolling on the ministry over a year ago. A desire to deliver food to the needy was put into action in September of 2013. “God laid it on my heart and you can’t ignore it when He wants you to do something,” said Hurst, director of the program. Each Friday morning Hurst and at least 10 other church members put lunches together in the basement of the downtown Selmer church. “The ministry is making an impact,” said church pastor Bro. Richard Reid. “God put it on Mindy’s heart and when someone feels compelled to do something good for the Lord I am behind it.” Members of the congregation feel the same. “It’s a wonderful thing to give people something to look forward to,” said “Food for the Soul” volunteer Jerry Evans. “It has been a blessing to see how people enjoy the ministry.” Around 150 people receive a sack lunch which includes a sandwich, chips, something sweet to eat and a bottle of water. A Bible verse is also included each week.

Crosswind Ministries brews program BY KIMBERLY SHELTON kshelton@dailycorinthian.com

Crosswind Ministries is adding a little something extra to the morning pickme-up. As part of their outreach program PERKS with their FAITH housing residents, the ministry is putting a spotlight on individuals presently enrolled in the program. “Each bag of coffee is specially prepared by a program member,” said Crosswind Executive Director Bobby Capps. “One hundred percent of the profits raised through our new

Crosswind Coffee Ministry will go straight toward helping those in need.” As an added jewel, each aromatic parcel also contains a personal success story. “We wanted to be able to tell the extraordinary stories of these girls who are recovering from all kinds of tough life situations, but also be able to raise money to fund the program,” said Capps. “We got the idea from a women’s home in Sewanee, Tenn. The ladies there make granola and other things while they are in recovery.”

For the price of an regular bag of coffee, those purchasing the exclusive brew can feel good knowing they are making a difference while filling their favorite mug. The ground coffee is available for $12 a bag and can purchased beginning at 6 p.m. tonight at The Gathering. (For more information on the “Perks” program or how to purchase a bag of your own, contact Crosswind Ministries by phone at 662-287-5600 or by email at outreach@crosswind. ms.)
