Our View: online dating no longer taboo The popularity of dating sites has grown over the past few years. The stigmas attached to meeting people online seems to be fading into the past as we see our generation, and even younger generations, joining in on the digital dating game.

According to an article from Forbes Magazine, 11 percent of American adults use online dating sites. In 2008, only 3 percent of American adults were active online dating subscribers.

As of 2014, the Pew Research Center reported that 42 percent of Americans know someone who uses an online dating site.

With the rise in subscribers to online dating sites, it seems people have grown accustomed to the prospect of online dating, and more free dating sites are popping up.

Some dating apps, such as Lulu, male college students. On Lulu, users rate male Facebook friends with the use of popular hashtags, including “#hot” and “#goodinbed.”

According to New York Magazine, Lulu has more than one million users after its launch and estimates it reaches one in four college girls in America.

The increasing number of people with smart phones is allowing online dating to be more readily accessible, especially among the younger generation.

With almost all dating sites available as free apps for smart phones, real life to be a burden.

People can order just about anything through an app, from food to cars, so why not order a date at the same time?

Some of the most popular dating sites for the younger generation include OkCupid.com, POF.com and the dating app Tinder.

In some countries, Tinder users al-

ready account for more than 1 percent of the country’s entire population, according to a Quartz report on NPR.com.

The rise of online dating drastically shifts the dating spectrum from meeting someone in person to simply interacting through digital profiles.

We think this wave of online dating sites may stem from the popular social medias that already exist.

Most college students have apps that include social media giants, such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, which may have inf luenced increasing contact through a digital world.

It seems that it’s becoming the norm for our generation to use dating sites to find a date and potential partner.

There are benefits to the online dating trend, seeing how students and many people in the world have part- or full-time jobs.

Online dating, especially the use of apps, allows us to connect to other young daters with ease.

With the popularity of dating sites among young adults, the taboo stigma attached to their use seems to be quickly diminishing. Who knows?

Online dating may quickly become or maybe it already is.

There is one thing, though, that that concerns us about the free online dating sites: the intention of the people who use these apps.

Are people genuinely trying to find a partner or are they just looking for a “fun buddy” to pass the time?

Although we don’t see the increase in dating sites as a bad thing, we think daters who use these services to find a purely sexual relationship is very real and a bit sad.

Tinder represents new generation of online dating services

With the end of 2013, we welcome the fresh New Year with bright eyes and hopeful hearts.

We leave the bad grades, forgettable many heartbreaks behind.

What’s the best way to ring in the New Year for us single kids who are looking for love … or maybe just some quick and easy company?

“Seriously, is everyone on Tinder?”

That’s what one Cal State Long Beach student asked the other day.

Since its development in late 2012, the dating app Tinder has generated over one million downloads.

Tinder is designed through a shallow screening process, unlike the common dating sites such as Plenty of Fish, Match and OkCupid.

While other dating sites require the prcoess.

Tinder is simply a headshot of the person, his or her name and the proximity from your current location.

One option is to create a short tagline but the purpose of the app is to pair couples based purely on physical attraction.

Swipe right if your interested, swipe left to kick them to the curb.

The stack of people in the deck seems limitless, as one can swipe through a 100 potential suitors in the span of a few minutes.

The beauty of this app is the anonymity in the matching process.

People are only paired together if both individuals swipe right on each other’s pictures. If someone swipes left on your picture, you will never know.

Once two people swipe right to each other, “It’s a match!” The pair can start communicating with one another through a message board.

The danger in apps such as these is mon interests, beliefs and standards are completely eliminated.

What’s even scarier is that Tinder

is known as a hookup app, as said on Askmen.com, where many users have no interest in dating at all. This could create a higher risk for unwanted sexual aggression.

Tinder is modeled behind a purely shallow archetype and lowers the traditional values of dating. Sure, relationships begin with mutual attraction but once there’s absolutely no other variable in the mix and people are treated as disposable cards, we will accept this as the new norm of dating.

Tinder eliminates the initial challenges of approaching someone. As a Tinder user, you don’t even have to leave the house to ask someone out on a date.

If we are to accept Tinder and other partner, are we becoming desensitized to in-person communication?

The awkwardness, hesitation, excitement and mystery all seem to be swept under the rug when the digital universe is playing the game for us.

Obama’s speech finds harmony between NSA and civil liberties

President Barack Obama’s recent speech announcing his intent to reform the National Security Administration (NSA) is a step in the right direction for civil liberties, although his speech left out many details on how he would execute these reforms.

“Those who are troubled by our existing programs are not interested in a repeat of 9/11, and those who defend these programs are not dismissive of

civil liberties,” Obama said. “The challenge is getting the details right, and that’s not simple.”

The speech attempted to strike a balance between national security and civil liberties. Obama, however, did concede that there was need for reform.

“In the long, twilight struggle against communism, we had been reminded that the very liberties that we sought to preof national security,” he said. “I would not be where I am today were it not for the courage of dissidents like [Martin Luther] King, who were spied on by their own government.”

Part of the details that Obama men-

tioned were attempts to scale back the government’s access to metadata, which could mean that the data collected by the many dragnet surveillance programs employed by the NSA would not be instantly accessible to the government unless they had a direct reason to access the data.

Obama, though, has not laid out the details in whether or not the data would be in the custody of the telecommunications companies or if the data would be held by a third party.

He did specify that government agencies could not access information from people that were more than two “hops,” or two degrees of separation,

away from an intended target. He said each request to access the metadata must go through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court before it can collect only the data pertinent to each individual case.

While many of these proposed reforms are a welcome change of tone for civil liberties activists, some critics are left wondering if Obama can accomplish the reforms by having it pass through a do-nothing congress.

Until the reforms become law, the NSA will continue to collect bulk data.

Whistleblower and fugitive Edward Snowden continues to release tiny portions of the government documents that

reveal the full extent of the government’s dragnet programs, which now include the contents of more than 200 million texts sent daily, according to the Los Angeles Times.

As the greater extent of surveillance programs unravel itself through Snowden’s leaks, public outcry will continue to push back against the government. It is unthinkable that Americans will remain complacent as Snowden continues to leak more documents to the media.

The government must act soon in order to remain legitimate; otherwise voters might react accordingly in the upcoming midterm elections.
