A LETTER FROM MARK Our industry is well known for getting things done. Look at what we’ve achieved in recent times! In busy periods like these when demands are high but we’re short on time and people, we must give extra attention to making sure our workplaces and team members are safe. There are no excuses, everyone deserves to go home to their families, injury free. At Dahlsens, we are raising the bar company-wide to make our workplace a safer place. Moving timber, driving trucks, packing and unpacking loads, on the forklifts, delivering to job sites… ours is a high-risk environment. Not to mention the toll this climate is having on the emotional well-being of all our team members. Dahlsens will always strive to service as many customers as physically possible, but our direction to the team is firm – making safe choices and caring for ourselves and each other takes priority over all other tasks. We will never stop in our mission to prevent injuries and save lives. Thank you for caring about our joint responsibility to work safely together. We’re in this for the long-term, not the short-term. The challenges we are all facing are well known and well documented, the volume of work under construction and approved but not yet commenced will continue to place pressure on supply. We are confident that we are well placed to meet demand, particularly for framing timber, however, we forecast shortages of LVL as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. We understand the difficulty of these delays, and assure you we are doing everything to leverage our buying power in order to supply as many customers as possible and to minimise price impacts from our suppliers. I hope your business and your team members are withstanding these pressures. We thank you for trusting this family business to do the best job we can to support you. Our team, so many of whom have spent their entire working life at Dahlsens, are proud of our contribution and value your loyalty.

AROUND THE PLACE

Across our 60 national sites on a day in February, all 1300 of us stopped for safety to identify opportunities for a safer workplace and culture.

We welcomed 6th generation Dahlsens family member to the Dahlsens business. Grandson of our owner John Dahlsen, Edward Ritchie has begun his traineeship while undertaking a university degree in property and valuation. Great to have you on board Ed!

Our Cairns Hardware peers held storewide charity days in March to raise much needed funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. A great cause!

We celebrate and salute Joe Chila, our IT manager, after 35 years of service. Everyone knows, loves and depends on Joe in more ways than one. Exciting times ahead!

Darryl McInnes, 40 years of service in our Echuca site. Always a spring in his step and a smile on his face, customers and the team wouldn’t be without you!

Stay safe, look after each other.

IT WON’T ALWAYS BE RIGHT HOW TO LOOK AFTER THE MENTAL HEALTH OF YOUR TEAM We know when we’re mentally healthy, we’re able to live productive, fulfilling lives. But when we’re struggling with daily life, it affects our physical health and can lead to anxiety and depression. Few occupations in Australia are more affected by poor mental health than the construction sector, with the rate of suicide among male trades almost double that of men in other industries. It is common for builders and trades to avoid seeking support when they’re experiencing a mental health issue. As a cohort, we’re more likely to go it alone amidst a “blokey” culture where you may think it weak to admit you’re going through a tough time. We spoke to mental health charities with first-hand experience working in the construction sector to understand how builders can create a work environment where people can talk about their struggles, and what methods they can use to look after their team’s mental health as well as their own.

A real problem Firstly, it’s important to grasp the scal e of the problem that’s facing the sector. According to the CEO of MATES in Construction for NSW, Brad Parker, we lose a building and construction worker to suicide every second day in Australia. “They are on average six times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work,” Brad says.

4

Risk factors Unique challenges exist in our industry that can be detrimental to mental health. One of these challenges is a culture where workmates avoid the discussion of problems. People don't speak up because they’re worried about being told to ‘harden up’ or ‘have a cup of concrete’. Other major issues include: > Long working hours > Relationship issues – working long hours exacerbates these problems > Heavy alcohol use > Bullying behaviours > Insecure work – the life of the project can be the life of the job

Not seeking help Not only is the suicide rate extremely high among builders and construction workers, the statistics alarmingly show 93 per cent of people in our industry did not seek professional help before they took their lives. This is the finding from the Australian Institute of Suicide, Research and Prevention report, which remains as the most comprehensive suicide study conducted in our industry.

Jeremy Forbes, the Co-founder of Hope Assistance Local Tradies (HALT), a grassroots suicide prevention charity, and a trade-qualified painter and decorator from Castlemaine in Victoria, says trades are one group who often experience mental health issues without seeking support. “Many will not seek the help they need when they’re experiencing depression, anxiety or suicidality due to stigma and a culture that doesn’t encourage talking about mental health,” he says.

1. Look for changes in attitude, appearance, any lack of sleep

Not only are these statistics a tragedy for the people involved and their friends and families, but they also point to additional safety issues in what is a dangerous sector in its own right.

2. Listen for negative comments and cries for help even though they may be cryptic and hidden

“If your mind is not on the job at hand, you’re not only a safety risk to yourself but to everyone working around you too,” Brad adds.

4. Keep someone safe while connecting them to help

How to open up the conversation and support your team It’s important to create a work environment where people can talk about their struggles and have access to support.

Know what to look for Often builders and trades spend more time at work than they do with their loved ones, family or friends, which makes them best placed to pick up on signs when their workmates are doing it emotionally tough. Knowing what to look for is a good starting point. What are the signs of someone struggling emotionally? What are the signs of suicidality? Here are some tips from MATES in Construction:

3. Call it out! Be brave enough to confront them and say, “I’ve noticed you’re not yourself lately”

5. Encourage them to seek help, but ensure they’re safe and supported

Have the tough conversation HALT emphasises the need to have the ‘tough conversation’ if you notice someone in your team could be struggling. This is the time to take that first step and have a chat because it could save a life. “It's critical to be able to open up the conversation if you’re worried about how someone is travelling. Be a good listener, show respect, empathy, create a space where they can be vulnerable and feel safe,” Jeremy says. “Have the tough conversation, and have as many of these as needed.”

MENTAL HEALTH

Increase help-seeking and help-offering Field staff from MATES in Construction provide training to workers to help them improve mental health and suicide prevention literacy, increase help-seeking and help-offering, and engage the workforce in creating a mentally healthy workplace. “The key is to encourage help-seeking and help-offering and this is at the heart of the MATES Program. Just being a good mate can make a difference,” Brad emphasises.

Lead by example As the leader of your team, you can choose to foster an environment where team members feel safe and supported to talk about their problems and where opening up is encouraged and applauded. Share your own challenges and worries, and discourage negativity onsite. Your team will soon understand that your workplace is a safe place.

Find support The other crucial way to support your team is to get in touch with industry-backed and research-based charities such as MATES in Construction and HALT. These groups solely exist to help reduce the high level of suicide among Australian building and construction workers. These organisations offer special events and programs to educate builders and trades about how and where they can get support if they need it, and they do powerful lifesaving work in the community. “Engage with suicide prevention mental health charities that can help give you and your team a better understanding of how to look after yourselves, what support services are available and suicide prevention tips,” Jeremy suggests.

HALT’s vision is that every tradie and apprentice in Australia knows how to look after their mental health and wellbeing. The charity hosts ‘Save Your Bacon’ brekkies and safeTALK events at workplaces, hardware stores, sporting clubs, Men’s Sheds and TAFEs across Australia to raise awareness of mental health and connect people with local and national support services. Details: halt.org.au At MATES in Construction, they train building and construction workers and guide them through how to support a mate. They raise awareness of suicide as a preventable problem, and build stronger and more resilient workers. The program connects workers to the best available help and support, and partners with researchers to inform the industry around best mental health practices. Details: mates.org.au

Tips to manage your own mental health Try to be aware of how your mental health is travelling and don’t ignore the signs — be honest with yourself, and if you think you might be struggling, have the courage to identify the kind of support you need. Remember that we all struggle at different times of our lives, and you’re not alone. While everyone is different, most people will also benefit from one or a combination of the following: 1. Eat well and get sleep — lack of sleep and a bad diet can have negative impacts on physical and mental health 2. Make time for you — spend time with people who are important to you and make time for yourself 3. Exercise — go for a walk or run, do yoga, jump on your skateboard or bike or get out in the garden. This increases serotonin levels in the brain, making us feel good and helping us cope better 4. S eek help if you’re struggling – your doctor is a great place to start. They can offer an ear to listen and connect you with further assistance

COURAGE CREATES A LEADER IN THE MENTAL HEALTH SPACE Feeling like he had a virus, Ryan woke one night with the sudden urge to be sick. Jumping out of bed, he flicked on the light as his heart rate skyrocketed. This moment was soon identified as Ryan's first panic attack and it landed him in hospital.

Ryan's mental health journey started several years ago after being promoted to foreman in his previous job. Still in his early 20s and suddenly in charge of a significant renovation, Ryan came faceto-face with his first difficult client. Every day became a nightmare for Ryan, who constantly fielded the client's abuse.

Following an MRI, the doctors told Ryan he had a large mass in the middle of his brain. They operated in the following days, but Ryan's condition didn't improve.

"This was the first time I encountered anyone or any stress like that. I didn't know at the time just how much it was mentally and physically affecting me," Ryan says. "I remember a drive to work when everything started to go downhill. I was light-headed, very fatigued, and having hot flushes."

8

Three weeks later, a follow-up with a specialist showed that Ryan's blood pressure was still critically high at 180/110. In other words, off the charts.

Ryan Jenkins, Site Supervisor at Tass Construction Group (pictured right), has shown that seeking help, overhauling your outlook, and implementing daily practices can help you bounce back from a mental health condition, even one that lands you in hospital.

stress and anxiety, started acupuncture, saw a naturopath, and implemented daily meditation and gratitude practices.

"The specialist looked at me and said, 'I now believe what brought you to hospital and what you are going through is caused by stress'," Ryan recalls.

Slowly but surely, he began to feel better, as he employed strategies to be calmer, more present and more resilient when facing stress. Ryan's anxiety disappeared – not because the stresses in his life had gone but rather because he made the decision to deal with them differently.

Ryan had a lightbulb moment and it all began to make sense. Back home, Ryan researched strategies to overcome

Through his experience, Ryan has developed a passion for talking about mental health.

Ben Tass, Josh Jones, Brad Smith, Aaron Tass, Josh Landsberry, Ryan Jenkins, Amelia Kemp

"Sadly over my life, I've known six people who have committed suicide and others who have attempted it – all men in their 20s and early 30s," Ryan says. "It's easy to walk into a conversation and talk about COVID, but it's hard to walk into a conversation and discuss your feelings – to let the group know you're feeling depressed or you're stressed out or anxious. "Hiding your feelings, bottling them up. That's not tough for me anymore. It's good that we’re starting to generate chat about mental health. No one can tell you that the way you feel is wrong because it’s the way you feel.”

Fostering good mental health onsite Learning from his own experience, Ryan strives to foster a positive culture within his teams onsite. Luckily, Aaron and Ben Tass, directors of Tass Construction Group, have already set the standard — from the ground up, they instill a culture based on trust, respect and camaraderie.

“We want to make sure everyone is rocking up to work and working with like-minded people," Ryan says.

Tass team, joined forces with locals Josh Landsberry and Amelia Kemp to recently host the first Shine Bright Night.

"Negativity gets addressed straight away. You're there all day with the same people. We need to make sure that everyone is bringing the good vibes.

Sponsored by Tass Construction Group, the gala event set out to shine a light on the darkness of mental illness and work towards ending suicide. A massive success, the event raised $130,000 to fund free mental health workshops in the local shire for anyone in the community to attend.

If someone is feeling stressed out, I support them, taking time to sit down and talk with them. There are no problems, only puzzles. If something goes wrong onsite, then we take the opportunity to learn so that we don't do it again. A lot of the boys now open up to me. They know that there’s a compassionate ear that is listening” Ryan says.

Raising awareness Fostering good mental health doesn't stop onsite, with the Sutherland Shirebased building company also dedicated to supporting its local community. The team has been running annual in-house charity days for mental health for several years now. Wanting to create a bigger impact, Ryan, together with Brad Smith and Josh Jones from the

"That night was just the start of something. Now we can continue to hold that event every year," Ryan says. There is no doubt that Ben, Aaron and Ryan and the rest of the team at Tass will continue to do great things both on and off the building site. Dahlsens is incredibly proud to support Tass and continue the mental health conversation, both within our team and the communities in which we operate.

AWARDS PROGRAMS

THE GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING As a builder, would you like to promote yourself as an industry leader? Receive extensive free media exposure about your amazing workmanship and quality home builds? Win recognition from your peers and gain new customers?

These benefits and more are within your grasp through the many awards programs in the building and construction sector. Available to builders of any size and covering builds of all budgets, these awards are about highlighting and rewarding excellence in all its forms.

the Australian Home of the Year. Hunter’s Construct Central Coast won in 2018 and NSW-based Mallinger Constructions won last year. If a project has great workmanship, it has every chance of winning an award,” Jenny says.

Here, we highlight how easy it is to showcase your craftsmanship with information about what’s on offer including projects on smaller budgets, preparing a quality entry, and the range of benefits an award could bring your business.

Award entrants must be members of the organisations, and homes are judged by industry experts from a range of professions — builders, designers, architects, interior designers. They will visit every house entered during the judging, and they use nationally consistent judging criteria, which include:

Award categories for businesses of any size The more well-known and accessible awards are available to builders through member organisations like the Housing Industry Association (HIA) and Master Builders Australia (MBA). Both member groups offer a range of categories with options for every builder and home budget, whether you build custom homes, project builds, sustainable houses, townhouses, kitchens, bathrooms or laundries.

10

> Quality of workmanship > Design effectiveness > Environmental sustainability > Innovation > Visual and market appeal

No barriers to smaller projects

HIA’s Awards Program Manager Jenny Haling says the awards are split into regions throughout Australia, with regional awards giving you the opportunity to compete with local builders, increasing your odds of success.

Both the HIA and MBA offer award categories that recognise stand-out projects on smaller budgets. These include the HIA’s ‘Custom Built Home up to $350,000’ category and the MBA’s ‘Contract Home up to $500,000’ and ‘Renovations up to $200,000’ categories.

Most local regional categories go on to compete in the state-based regional awards, and those winners go on to compete at the highest level, the HIA Australian Home of the Year awards.

Jenny recommends looking at what the project cost to build and placing it in the relevant price point. She points out that the quality of workmanship is heavily weighted in the judging criteria.

“We love to see projects from first-time entrants,” Jenny says. “Occasionally people tell us their assumption that you have to enter for a few years before you have any success, but we’ve had first-time entrants take out

“That 45 to 50 per cent workmanship is a huge weighting. A home that’s under $500k with amazing workmanship can still have just as much chance of winning as any other home,” she says.

AWARDS PROGRAM

Increase your chance of winning In the HIA awards, local regions can choose their own categories which don’t go through to the Australian level, such as affordable homes, residential design, outdoor kitchen, and work health and safety. These can be less well known and therefore less competitive – increasing your chances of winning. To identify a category that stops at the regional awards, look for the following statement on the regional award’s HIA webpage. “Winner in this category is recognised locally and does not progress to the Australian Housing Awards.” The Custom Built, Display, and Spec Home are the most popular categories.

How to make your entry shine As builder awards programs, the quality of workmanship of your home is key and, in the case of the HIA, will account for about half of the score you achieve in the submission process. “The house will really talk for itself. If the builder is really proud of the workmanship, it’s a good indication that they should enter,” Jenny says. That being said, there are ways to make your entry stand out from the pack. Jenny encourages entrants to closely follow the HIA’s entry process, which encourages builders to engage a professional photographer. “We do encourage entrants to get professional photographs – it’s not a requirement but it does really show the house in its best light, especially in the media if it’s a winner,” she says. “Drone video or other videos can also be submitted and we anticipate they will be the way of the future. Drone footage can communicate the layout of multi-storey houses on sloped properties in a way that photographs can’t.” Both the HIA and MBA have an online process for entering their awards programs, allowing you to save your entry as you go, and duplicate entries for multiple categories, saving time. Entering a home in multiple categories, such as HIA’s ‘Custom Home up to $350,000’ and ‘Affordable Housing’ categories, can also multiply your chance of being named a finalist or winner, and in some states, these subsequent entries can also receive a discount.

Benefits of winning The great thing about entering and winning an award is that it provides endless marketing opportunities for your business

and the power of being recognised as an industry leader among your peers, customers and market segment.

No matter which program you choose to enter, the benefits of winning include: > The prestige of being known as an award-winning builder > Showing off your achievements to your customer base > I nvaluable exposure across local, state and national media and newspapers > New business as a result of the extra exposure > Promotion on HIA and MBA websites and social media channels > More search engine results for potential clients > O fficial award logos to use on your website, site signs, email signature, social media tiles Even if you participate and don’t win, potential customers can get a sense of your knowledge and hard work in the industry and be open to working with you in the future. Plus, the process of preparing a quality submission will start your thinking about the features, benefits and principles that you’ve incorporated into the home, which in turn will assist in your marketing efforts.

Need help with your entry? As a customer of Dahlsens, we’re here to support your success. PROJECT PROFILE

SMOOTH RUNNINGS Proving their status as a high-end builder, Mckeone has delivered another breathtaking build; a minimalist masterpiece with striking clean lines and a cool colour palette.

Tim Price, pictured left and his team

Located on the edge of Wodonga in Victoria’s north east, the McGaffins build sits boldly in the landscape. Floor to ceiling windows line the back of the house and capture sweeping scenic views, while raw cladding materials contrast and complement the surroundings.

“Quality homes are built off the back of quality relationships,” Tim says. “Trust is critical, especially in the building game, and it is why we put in so much effort upfront to really understand what the client is wanting to achieve and to help the client know we get it.

The project came with a number of challenges for Mckeone. The site had a long and narrow footprint, an architectural design, “We’re proud and a tight eight-month works program that saw of this project not up to 16 trades on site just because of at its peak. According to Mckeone founder Tim Price, the job came about after the clients were impressed with the style and quality of their most recent work.

the quality result but because of the challenges we overcame to deliver it.”

“The clients and their architect Sunjoule Design were looking for a new home featuring the high-end minimalist and sustainable design features that we’ve become known for around AlburyWodonga and north-east Victoria,” Tim says. Established in 2018, Mckeone has quickly built a strong reputation for delivering quality bespoke and

14

contemporary homes, having already amassed 15 completed projects across the Murray and High Country regions.

“We were conscious with the McGaffins build that our clients were entering the retirement stage in life and that contemporary features, finishes and fittings needed to be practical and safe as well as high quality to meet the brief,” he explains.

Polished concrete flooring was used throughout and zero-threshold transitions ensured a seamless passage through each space. All external doors were recessed to achieve the same objective. High-end fittings and finishes such as the porcelain kitchen benchtops, two-pac drawers and cupboards, hardwood flush jams and recessed skirting boards, and Sussex tapware and accessories were also chosen and installed according to precise specifications.

Hydronic floor heating, reverse cycle refrigerated heating and cooling, and double-glazed windows manage energy as efficiently as possible and improve comfort in a local environment known for its cold winters and hot summers. Tim and his team undertook all bespoke carpentry, as well as installing the striking Cemintel Barestone cladding and Corten Steel curved screens which will greet family and friends as they arrive. “We worked closely with our client’s selected pool builder ‘Everlast Pools’ to continue the polished concrete theme for the external pool surrounds,” Tim says. The results speak for themselves.

“We’re proud of this project not only because of the quality result but also for the challenges we overcame to deliver it,” Tim said. “Even though Melbourne was in lockdown, all of Victoria was impacted and the team at Dahlsens Albury, especially our Account Manager Jason Bowe, were all over our project from start to finish,” he says. “With most materials supplied by Dahlsens they were a crucial partner in the build. We got what we ordered when we were expecting it, with only slight delays which didn’t really impact the overall programme. All told, it was a smooth job from start to finish.”

sustainable building solutions to

SAFEGUARD THE FUTURE In the face of rising energy costs and climate change, more and more homeowners are looking for solutions that lower the environmental impacts and costs of running their homes. There is a growing group of consumers who are actively seeking sustainable building materials, such as products made from renewable and recycled materials, and those which have a lower carbon footprint. By offering the use of sustainable building materials in your builds, builders are positioned to meet the demands of a new generation. In 2022, the construction industry is forecasting changes to energy efficiency and condensation regulations in the National Construction Code (NCC), with the 6-star energy rating expected to change to 7-star. With this in mind, now is a good time to consider sustainable building materials solutions, many of which are available through Dahlsens. Here’s some options and thought-starters to consider.

Weathertex cladding and lining Are your clients looking to boost the sustainability credentials of their home, while also achieving long-lasting street appeal? Introduce them to Weathertex, made in Australia using waste timber sourced from plantation estates – it’s completely carbon neutral. Weathertex products can be classed as sustainable for the following reasons: > Made from waste plantation timber – not old growth hardwood > No chemical additives, artificial glues or resins, or silica added > Manufactured with three per cent paraffin wax that binds and waterproofs > They repurpose by-products into packaging, fuel or compost to reduce landfill > Select products are Global GreenTag certified, one of the world’s most trusted ecolabels With Weathertex, your clients can achieve a range of on-trend house styles. SUSTAINABILITY

Recycled glass insulation More and more, homeowners realise the value of investing in premium insulation. Retrofitting insulation can be difficult and costly down the track, and the saving gains of up to 45 per cent on heating and cooling costs as well as year-round comfort and reduced emissions are attractive. Certain types of insulation batts, including those from supplier to Dahlsens, CSR Bradford, are made from up to 80 per cent recycled glass. This makes them a good choice for the environment and for reducing landfill. Win-win! Dahlsens has a complete range of bulk, reflective and wrap insulation available for your consideration. Speak to the local team for more information.

All the brands available from Dahlsens, including NewTechWood, ModWood, Trex and Timbertech, are made from recycled plastics, providing a new life for plastics destined for landfill. Your clients will love the benefits of using composite decking and screening products: > No oiling, staining or sanding required > A sustainable option made from recycled plastic containers > Splinter free and safe for children > Resistant to mould and mildew > A vailable in a range of colours to suit your clients’ styles > Designed to withstand harsh weather conditions The Dahlsens team can help you find the right composite product for your project, speak to the team today.

Timber framing

Composite decking and screening Composite decking products made from recycled plastics are rapidly growing in popularity. They’re a longlasting and low-maintenance alternative to conventional timber, with no sanding, staining or oiling required.

Timber in design and construction is helping tackle climate change, as a 100 per cent renewable resource that absorbs and stores carbon dioxide while it grows. The carbon remains locked in the wood for life, until it rots, decays or is burnt. With a typical Australian home absorbing more than seven tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air, according to the Timber Framing Collective, timber is helping to renew our future.

17

SUSTAINABILITY Dahlsens strictly sources timber framing from sustainably managed plantation forests. For every tree that’s harvested from certified plantations, at least one is replanted. Australian softwood plantations regrow an average house frame in less than a minute.

Electrical heating, cooling and appliances Australia has the world’s highest uptake of rooftop solar, with more than one in four homes now equipped with solar panels according to the Clean Energy Council. The use of electrical appliances for the purposes of cooking, heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) makes good use of solar power. Dahlsens can arrange for your project a hassle free HVAC solution, supplied and installed with no upfront costs. Plus, as a whole of house supplier, Dahlsens can supply an extensive range of quality appliances from well-known brands such as Westinghouse, Smeg, Euro Brands, Technika and more.

THE BENEFI TS OF

BLUE STACK UP

Securing our homes from harm is of high priority to many. We protect our investments with security systems and insure them against damage, but what about the damage that can’t be insured? Like the destruction from termites? It is increasingly becoming standard practice for builders to offer a guaranteed solution to protect their clients’ homes from termite damage with a termite treated house frame. Sourced from preferred supply partners to Dahlsens, Timberlink, with Timberlink Blue and Hyne Timber with Hyne T2 Blue, termite treated timber is safe and reliable.

Building with termite treated blue pine > A ccording to AS3660, the use of termite treated timber is approved when building to resist termite attack, as is the use of a barrier system. Note, local councils should be consulted to ensure the deemed-to-satisfy conditions are met > R educe trades on site by removing the need to install a termite barrier > T imberlink Blue and Hyne T2 have been used in hundreds of thousands of builds, without a single failure due to termite damage recorded

20

Upsides for homeowners > P eace of mind with a 25-year warranty against structural termite damage > L ittle to no post-construction maintenance, unlike other termite systems such as barriers, meshes and chemical sprays > Safe for homeowners and their pets > C hoosing a timber frame helps to reduce the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change

What’s in it for the builder? > Showcase your commitment to enduring quality > O ffering termite treated blue pine as an upgrade option for homebuyers could lead to more profit > H omebuyers will appreciate the small initial outlay for the substantial peace of mind

BAL-40 RATED TREATED PINE FLAMEFIXX DFX® ACHIEVES BAL-40 FIRE SAFETY RATING In response to the devastating 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, the Australian Government introduced Bushfire Attack Levels (BAL). While the rating system strives to make homes more robust in the face of bushfires, it can present challenges for builders and homeowners alike. Budget blowouts, building materials compromises and changes to the desired style of the project are all common when building in high BAL-rated areas. Up until recently, material choices for external unenclosed substructures have been limited. For projects requiring BAL-29 and above ratings, the favoured choice of treated pine has not met conditions.

BAL-40 RANGE H3 Structural • 90 x 45mm MGP10 • 140 x 45mm MGP10 • 190 x 45mm MGP10 • 240 x 45mm F7 • 290 x 45mm F7 • Lengths available: 3.6m, 4.2m, 4.8m, 5.4m & 6.0m

That was until FLAMEfixx dFx®, the world’s first BAL-40 rated treated pine and a complete game-changer, came on the market. Extensively tested to meet the requirements of BAL-40, FLAMEfixx is impregnated with industry-leading dFx® technology that combines a globally approved, durable wood preservative and a proprietary fire-retardant.

H3 Premium Decking

How it works

H3 Premium Screening

When exposed to fire, FLAMEfixx dFx self-extinguishes the flame leaving a slightly blackened surface and the structural integrity of the timber intact.

TIMBER SUPPLY

LVL COMPLIANCE CONCERNS The challenges with timber supply are expected to continue throughout 2022, and while the recent floods and heavy rainfall in NSW and QLD temporarily relieved the pressure on framing timber supply, the devastating conflict in Ukraine has increased the challenges on the availability of LVL. With Russia supplying around 25% of Australia’s LVL requirements, the disruption to supply is expected to open the doors to new sources of LVL. Some of these alternative sources of LVL may not be compliant with Australian Standards which presents risks to the Australian building industry. Rest assured, when you purchase LVL from Dahlsens you can be confident that you’re buying a compliant product, supplied with the correct certifications and documentation to back it. To ensure the integrity of our LVL, Dahlsens chooses to partner exclusively with Australia’s major LVL importers, including Meyer Timber, Tilings, ITI and Dindas, who are trusted for their rigorous due diligence processes. While we are working around the clock to leverage our buying power to supply as many customers as possible and minimise price impacts from our suppliers, we understand that there may be times when you need to purchase your LVL requirements from other suppliers. In that instance, we share with you an industry paper to help you verify the compliance of LVL. Produced by the Timber Development Association, the paper features instructions to identify NCC compliant structural timber products. NCC

TRUSS & FRAME

PAVING THE WAY The accolades are flowing in fast for Pryda SpeedTrussTM, an innovative new truss installation system available at Dahlsens that promises to save precious installation time onsite. Fully compliant, SpeedTrussTM trusses have pre-installed screws that permanently connect each truss to the top plate. Too easy! Finding better ways to design and build is the Pryda way. For over 50 years, Pryda has delivered engineered productivity solutions to help builders do their best work. The Pryda SpeedTruss™ is a new approach to roof truss installation, enabling builders to work faster, easier, safer and altogether smarter.

Certification security Certifiers don’t like surprises. It's beneficial to put Pryda into contact with your certifier before you begin to use SpeedTruss™. With Pryda's help, you can provide the certifier with full documentation (including engineering certification and a guide covering compliance requirements and inspections) before they come onsite to inspect your installation.

So, when your certifier arrives, they’ll have confidence about the new technology, how it complies with the National Construction Code, and how to determine whether you’ve correctly installed the trusses. This means no hold-ups!

New technology that saves installation time Say goodbye to triple grips and temporary fixes and save valuable time onsite with Pryda SpeedTruss™. Pryda’s innovation doesn’t end there. The new FastFixTM Internal Wall Screw (IWS) takes the time and labour out of tedious L Bracket connections and replaces them with one compliant connection. A placement guide positions the FastFixTM screw vertically and with the correct off-sets to ensure it is driven up through the vertical centreline of the truss and the wall every time. You can finish the job in a fraction of the time it takes to install L brackets. How good is that?

If you’re interested in switching to SpeedTruss™ and FastFixTM, talk to your Dahlsens account manager to learn how these new innovations can really lighten your workload.

INTRODUCING BEAM 15 THE SOLUTION YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR Unprecedented demand for engineered wood products has put enormous pressure on the local timber industry to ramp up production and make products more readily available. Valued supplier to Dahlsens, Hyne Timber, has responded with Beam 15 – a high-performance timber product made in Australia and engineered to handle long spans and critical loads as an alternative to LVL. This is an entirely new grade of glue-laminated timber (GLT) that’s been made more readily available to support record-breaking market demand.

window and door openings, garage openings or roof beams where spans over large spaces are dictated by design.

As a natural resource, wood fibre is subject to the forces of nature. The high-grade feedstock Hyne recover from their sawmilling operations for GL17 beams has been steadily declining.

Accreditation you can trust

Enter Beam 15. Made using high-strength, custom graded laminates, Beam 15 looks identical to Hyne’s Beam 17 and can also be used in almost all applications where GL17 is specified.

Beam 15 is also suitable for indoor and outdoor, aboveground applications and is available in commonly specified sizes and lengths.

As a proprietary product, Hyne has run Beam 15 through a myriad of tests to ensure consistency in performance and compliance with the Building Code.

Where to use Beam 15

Beam 15 has been assessed by an independent thirdparty accreditation program, which verified that Beam 15 complies not only with the National Construction Code (NCC), it also meets the Australian standards in manufacturing and design – AS1328.1 and AS1720.1.

The renowned natural strength of timber is enhanced with Hyne’s glue laminating process, ensuring Beam 15 is comparatively lightweight and ideal for long span and high load applications. Beam 15 is ideal for lintels over large

A full product technical statement can be downloaded via the QR Code. If you’re looking for engineering solutions, try Hyne’s free design software, Hyne Design accessible via the Hyne website.

Available through Dahlsens, learn more about Hyne’s GL range by speaking to your account manager or local store.
