A city is a place where there is no need to wait for next week to get the answer to a question, to taste the food of any country, to find new voices to listen to and familiar ones to listen to again.”

Q&A

What fuels your interest in photographing the built environment?

I think it goes back to growing up in a very small rural area of Wisconsin and just being so fascinated by the urban environment and how different it is from where I grew up. Even after nearly 25 years in Chicago, I'm still fascinated by the city and its constant evolution.

You have an education and background in the microsciences (molecular biology, microbiology, virology). Do you see a connection between your studies in this area and your art practice today?

Absolutely! It took me awhile to make the connections between various parts of my background and life but even the way I see architecture is often about finding ways to see the unseen or overlooked elements that make up the whole.

Q&A

How have you honed and developed your artistic style over the years? What practices, experiences, or ideas have helped you find your unique visual voice?

I think it all comes back to finding ways to distill the essence of whatever it is I'm photographing through isolating smaller pieces of my subject. Sometimes this is made possible by using long lenses, sometimes it's about finding unique or unexpected vantage points or angles - which allows for different elements of the design to interact with each other, neighboring structures, or even natural elements.

focusing on bold architectural details rather than sweeping cityscapes, my photography aims to celebrate those unexpectedly iconic elements hiding in plain sight.”
