Just culture is an environment in which all employees and contractors feel safe to report errors and near misses. It’s about asking ‘what went wrong?’ rather than ‘who is to blame?’.
It’s important to understand however, just culture is not a ‘no blame culture’. While we recognise everyone makes mistakes, we need to differentiate between an honest mistake we can learn from and an act of negligence.
Any employee who knowingly engages in unsafe activities, persistently acts in a way that compromises safety, or disregards established procedures, will not be protected under the just culture philosophy.
