D,

OUT OF THE CLUB, INTO THE WORLD

"I AM DAVID HUGHES DTM – A VERY GRATEFUL TOASTMASTER MEMBER."

THE BEGINNING OF THE JOURNEY:

In 1986, I began my Toastmasters journey at the suggestion of my senior Personnel manager He told me that while I was a very valued employee, my speaking rate of 250 words per minute made it difficult for others to follow me

He believed that with my personnel knowledge, experience, and intrapreneurial skills, I would rise more quickly in that organisation with a slower speaking rate How right he was.

THE ROAD TO MASTERY:

I took his advice and joined Frankston Toastmasters Club, where over the next seven years I honed my speaking and leadership skills. After a 16-year break to raise a family, I returned to Toastmasters, joining various other clubs and serving in area, division, and district leadership roles.

Today, I am a DTM, Author, Keynote Speaker, Leader, Workshop Presenter, and Storyteller eternally grateful to the manager who steered me in the right direction.

I am passionate about Toastmasters and all the other community activities I engage in, including travelling the world to join with Toastmaster friends and colleagues, writing a few newsletter articles, coaching and mentoring TEDx Speakers, and as a servant leader, serving others both here in Australia and around the globe in whichever capacity they feel appropriate

“SELF-EMPLOYED, NEVER RETIRED”

In my work, I’m not necessarily financially rewarded, but with the joy of being.

“I know what I love to do, I am good at it, I believe the community appreciates it, and I am justly rewarded for my effort.”

THIS IS MY IKIGAI, OR REASON TO GET UP IN THE MORNING.

I AM DAVID A HUGHES DTM, A 23+ YEAR TOASTMASTER WHO WAS GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY, SEIZED IT, AND BENEFITTED ENORMOUSLY BY BEING IN OUR COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP ORGANISATION.

DTM DAVID HUGES TABLE TOPICS CHAMPION -2017

BASS DIVISION GOVERNOR DISTRICT 73

On the 1st of February 2025 the Club Officer Installation Ceremony took place We used the theme “Aurora” which in Latin means “Dawn” , which is a continuation from last year’s theme “Ligero” which means “light” . Symbolically, Aurora, the goddess of dawn, signaled new beginnings just like our new members, who lead our club into its next chapter

I write this as the treasurer of the club and as the installation chair to thank and congratulate everyone who supported us, the installation committee, the guests, and all our club members, both old and new It was a lot of hard work, and I would like to give special thanks to our Club President, TM Shenoli Gamage for helping and guiding me.

TM NAVEED SEEDIN

The ceremony witnessed the induction of new club officers. TM Shenoli Gamage assumed the role of President, with TM Geethika Perera serving as Vice President Education and TM Prasansa Gunawardana as the Assistant Vice President Education. TM Pansilu Aloka was appointed Vice President Membership along with TM Salmaan Haleem as Assistant Vice President Membership TM Gahana Karunananthan will now be the Vice President Public Relations with TM Anujana Rajakaruna as the Assistant Vice President Public Relations TM Himashi Perera is now the Secretary with TM Naveed Seedin as the Treasurer and TM Isiwara Kavisha as the Sergeant-atArms

If Ligero was our dedication to always getting better, then let Aurora be the natural light that follows as a natural phenomenon of that dedication.

I can safely say that we as a club made the event embody the different meanings of Aurora. It was like the northern light, to some it was like the announcement and the celebration of a new beginning. So as members let’s not forget the beauty and promise of what we build together

THE POWER OF MENTORING:

HOW GUIDING MADE A STRONGER CONTESTANT

A Different Lens to Growth

Competing in Toastmasters speech contests is an exhilarating experience, but mentoring others through their contest journeys can be just as rewarding. My journey in contests began in 2021, continued in 2022, and then took a pause However, my passion for contests never faded. I dedicated myself to mentoring fellow Toastmasters in Humorous Speech, Evaluation, Table Topics, and International Speech contests Little did I know, this would refine my own skills and prepare me for my comeback

A Two-Way Learning Process

While guiding contestants, I gained valuable insights into different speech structures, effective feedback techniques, and the nuances of performance. Observing mentees overcome challenges gave me a fresh perspective on my own strengths and areas for improvement Their successes became my learning moments, reinforcing my understanding of what makes a winning speech.

Over the past two years, I also embraced judging and chief judging opportunities. Evaluating various contestants sharpened my ability to recognize what captivates an audience, what earns high scores, and how minor details can make a significant impact. This analytical approach directly enhanced my own speech crafting and delivery

A Return to the Stage

In 2025, I stepped back into competition, winning at the club level, securing 1st runner-up at the area contest, and qualifying for divisions My years of mentoring and judging had unknowingly shaped me into a stronger, more prepared contestant

Mentoring is not just about giving; it is about growing together. By genuinely helping others, we refine our own abilities and become better speakers, evaluators, and contestants. Sharing knowledge is the key to thriving in Toastmasters!

Contestants and to all Toastmasters waiting for contests, always help one another to achieve better, expecting nothing in return Seek the opportunities through this fraternity; never take them for granted

On the 23rd of February, the Torrington Toastmasters Club hosted its much-anticipated International Speech Contest and Table Topics Contest at the Royal College Skills Union Center.

The event, which began at 4 PM, was a showcase of talent, courage, and the spirit of Toastmasters, leaving everyone inspired and motivated

As the Contest Chair, I had the privilege of overseeing this exciting evening filled with powerful speeches and impromptu brilliance

The contests featured a total of 14 participants. The contestants delivered remarkable performances, with half of them competing for the very first time a testament to the club's ability to nurture new talent and foster growth among its members

A special thanks to Chief Judge TM Vaughn Ernst, Contest Masters TM Nithini Kumarasinghe and TM Nuvin GodakandaArachchi, timers, tally counters, SAA team, Area Director TM Achintha Jayasekara, and the Club ExCo for their incredible support.

BODY LANGUAGE DO’S AND DON’TS IN SPEECHES

HAVE YOU EVER WATCHED A SPEECH THAT FELT FLAT DESPITE STRONG CONTENT?

Often, the missing ingredient is effective body language In speech delivery, body language plays a crucial role It contributes to 30% of the overall impact in both international and humorous speech contests. Mastering gestures and posture can elevate your speech, making it engaging and memorable. Through this article, we will look at what to do and what not to do when it comes to body language usage in speeches

Effective body language enhances speech delivery, making it more engaging and impactful.

Use purposeful gestures that naturally emphasize key points without seeming forced

To project confidence, maintain good posture by standing tall and balanced, which helps with voice projection

Engaging facial expressions that align with your words creates a stronger connection with the audience

Additionally, move with intent strategic movement across the stage can reinforce your message rather than distract from it

Body language should complement your words, not overpower them.

Avoid overdramatic gestures, as excessive movements can turn a speech into a theatrical act rather than an authentic message

Excessive pacing can be distracting, pulling focus away from your content

Also, refrain from using closed-hand gestures, such as clenched fists, as they may signal tension instead of confidence.

Remember, a speech should remain a speech not a drama. Use body language wisely, and let your words take center stage!

2.Open Posture 1.Hand Gestures
3. Facial Expressions

On the 8th of March, 2025, I had the pleasure of hosting the Open House of Torrington Toastmasters. The event provided a stage for new or first-time speakers

The theme, Your First Public Speaking Experience, was carefully chosen to inspire new prospects and offer them a broad understanding of the world of public speaking The PR strategy leading up to this day was thoughtfully crafted.

Videos from new members who joined the club after the previous Open House were featured, where they shared their journeys, experiences, and why they chose Torrington Toastmasters specifically The PR team did an excellent job with the flyers and videos, which resulted in a solid number of registrations.

The event itself was profound and promising, as we got to interact with enthusiastic new prospects The Open House covered essential aspects of public speaking, highlighting the physical and mental challenges faced by young speakers, especially those who have been part of the Sri Lankan education system. Guidance on public speaking emphasized self-investment

TM ARIEL LOGARAJ OPEN HOUSE CHAIR

As the Chair of this event, I learned valuable lessons in organizationandimprovisation. It also allowed me to get to know the existing members better their communication skills, backgrounds, andareas ofexpertise and clear message delivery, enhancing communication skills, workplace proficiency, and community impact. Guidance on public speaking emphasized self-investment and clear message delivery, enhancing communication skills, workplace proficiency, and community impact.

We were joined by Area Director TM Achintha Jayasekara, who delivered a powerfulvisualandauditory masterclass His speech motivated the new prospects to embark on this exciting journeyofpublicspeakingwith us I believe his words left a lasting impact on everyone whoattended

OVERALL, I CONSIDER THE EVENT A SUCCESS, AS IT EFFECTIVELY PLANTED THE IDEA OF PUBLIC SPEAKING IN THE MINDS OF YOUNG PROSPECTS WHILE SHOWCASING THE CLUB’S POTENTIAL WITH CLARITY.

HOW TO GIVE AND RECEIVE CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK

Constructive feedback transforms good speakers into great ones In Toastmasters, evaluations aren’t just critiques they shape confident, impactful communicators. Given with care and received openly, feedback fuels growth. Mastering this skill enhances not only speaking but also leadership, inspiration, and connection Here’s how to make every evaluation count

GIVING FEEDBACK:

USE THE “CRC” METHOD

1

BE SPECIFIC, NOT GENERIC

The Compliment, Recommend, Compliment approach builds confidence while providing valuable suggestions Start by highlighting strengths, offer constructive suggestions for improvement, and finish with encouragement

MAKE IT ACTIONABLE

Generic feedback doesn’t help speakers grow. Instead of “Work on your gestures,” say, “Try using hand movements to emphasize key points, like spreading your arms when describing something big.”

4

GIVING FEEDBACK:

LISTEN WITH AN OPEN MIND

Feedback is a gift. Resist the urge to defend; instead, absorb and reflect

1

Instead of saying, “That was a great speech,” pinpoint what worked: “Your storytelling drew us in, especially when you described the suspenseful moment with vivid details ”

2

BALANCE HONESTY WITH ENCOURAGEMENT

Feedback should inspire improvement, not discourage. For example, instead of “You lacked energy,” say, “Your message was strong adding more vocal variety could make it even more impactful.”

3

EVERY EVALUATION REFINES YOUR DELIVERY, STRENGTHENS YOUR

ASK FOR CLARIFICATION

If something is unclear, seek examples: “What part of my conclusion could be stronger?”

IMPLEMENT AND IMPROVE

2 3

The best way to grow is to apply feedback in future speeches and track progress. By embracing constructive feedback, you sharpen your skills, boost your confidence, and unlock new levels of growth.

LOVER, WILL YOU BE MY VALENTINE?

YOU PLUS ONE EDITION

February 8, 2025, was not just another Toastmasters meeting, it was a celebration of love, connection, and the magic of You Plus One!

As the Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD), I had the exciting challenge of leading a room filled with romance, energy, and a touch of friendly competition. From the opening bell to the final applause, the atmosphere was electric, and love was in the air!

This meeting was special for more reasons than one It wasn’t just about speeches and evaluations; it was an evening where Toastmasters proved that it’s more than a leadership and public speaking platform.

It’s a place where personal and professional relationships flourish And for me, it was even more meaningful because my fiancé, TM Udara Sembukuttiarachchi, took the role of General Evaluator.

TM Udara delivered a valuable evaluation of the entire meeting, highlighting both the strengths that made the evening a success and areas where we could improve

Who knew that joining Toastmasters would lead me to both personal growth and my very own Romeo?

With 24 attendees, including 10 Plus Ones, the evening was packed with engaging speeches, and even a few surprise games that had everyone laughing and bonding Adding to the excitement, our Area Director, TM Achintha, graced us with his presence, sharing invaluable feedback and motivation.

AS THE NIGHT CAME TO A CLOSE, ONE THING WAS CLEAR, LOVE AND TOASTMASTERS MAKE A PERFECT MATCH. WHETHER IT'S FINDING YOUR VOICE, YOUR CONFIDENCE, OR EVEN YOUR SOULMATE, TOASTMASTERS HAS IT ALL!

RISING TORRIES: OUR NEWEST

I joined Torrington Toastmasters a few months ago, and it has been life-changing At first, I was too nervous to speak on stage But with a supportive audience and continuous practice, I grew more comfortable. The club feels like a gym everyone is encouraging and working towards a common goal: becoming better speakers. a place to ironment ation, and ship skills

iththevibe one would

As the meeting went on, I gained a lot of practical knowledge through the tips and trickssharedbytheexperiencedtoastmasterstakingthestage.

The open house held by Torrington Toastmasters was no doubt an experience worth remembering. I was immediately greeted with a warmatmosphereandtheteammanagedtomakesureeveryonefelt comfortable

Attending Torrington as a guest was an incredibly great experience I was pushing myself to attend the open house because I had never been in a crowded room with unfamiliar faces alone before. However, this time I really wanted to experience a meeting since one of my friends had told me how wonderful that place is for someone lookingtoovercomeshynessandfearofpublicspeaking.
