Joining Horana Toastmasters is one of the biggest turning points in my life. The shy girl who would never stand in front of a crowd even to speak up a few words was turned out to an individual who is no more shy, no more fearful in front of an audience. Furthermore, the club helped me to evoke the leader within me as well.

I’m happy and proud to mention myself as the VP Membership for the current term and I am looking forward eagerly to serve my club with using the fullest potential within me, with the support of my EXCO and all my members in Horana Toastmasters family

Back to my roots in 2019 resembles few milestones in my journey as a Toastmaster. In 2019, I joined KDU Toastmasters Club as an undergraduate of KDU and in 2021, I transferred my membership to Horana Toastmasters Club The president at times (21/22) planted me as a seed in PR team where I stand as the VPPR of 2023/24 Exco after experiencing the World of Public Relations for two years.

My targets are to give 120% for every flyer, event and to win a PR award in next Ovation which will be the first ever PR Award achieved in Horana Toastmasters Club history.

When I joined Horana Toastmasters Club in September 2022, my only intention was to sharpen my speaking ability, creativity and discover my hidden potential.

With the handover of the new position as the treasurer, I am busy with new and existing member renewals, and handling the financial activities related to Toastmasters International.

Keeping the financial stability of the club by balancing the expenses with the funds will be my main responsibility and my main challenge. I hope to give my best to Horana Toastmasters family.

I started my life at Toastmasters as a guest in the month of February 2023. After a while of improving myself as a member, I got the privilege to take on the role of the Sergeant-At-Arms of renowned Horana Toastmasters Club. I plan to do my best as Sergeant At Arms and to improve my work further at each club meeting and give my maximum attention to my duties

We've all been there, haven't we? In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we face relentless stressors that can make each day feel like an uphill battle. The pressures at work seem never-ending, our personal relationships often feel strained, and the relentless pace of modern life can exact a toll on our overall well-being. These challenges can be particularly resonant in the context of Sri Lanka, where we've been witnessing an increasing prevalence of these stressors. The ongoing economic challenges, coupled with the ever-rising expenses, have made it abundantly clear that this is an issue we can no longer ignore.

In the face of such relentless stress, we often find ourselves searching for ways to alleviate it. We've heard about meditation, deep breathing exercises, physical activity, and mental resets, all of which offer respite from the stressors that plague our lives. And while these methods are undoubtedly valuable, we, as Toastmasters, have a secret weapon up our sleeves – a unique and transformative approach that offers much more than just stress relief.

This approach not only equips you to manage stress but also enhances your ability to communicate effectively and bolsters your self-confidence simultaneously It's a comprehensive solution that can truly change the game, and we're excited to share it with you. So, let's delve into the world of Toastmasters, where stress relief is just the beginning of the incredible journey that awaits.

Crushing Fear, One Presentation at a Time

Imagine the scenario: a major presentation at work looms on the horizon, filling your nights with sleepless anxiety and your days with repetitive, seemingly ineffective practice sessions The stress of this impending performance could be paralyzing However, this is where Toastmasters emerges as your beacon of transformation.

Through the consistent practice you engage in at your Toastmasters club, you embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth With each speech you deliver, you don't just improve your public speaking skills, but you also nurture your inner confidence. Picture this as a gradual ascent, where your initial nervousness starts to subside, replaced by a growing sense of assurance.

As you continue to speak and receive constructive feedback from your fellow Toastmasters, the stress that once had you in its grip undergoes a profound metamorphosis. What was once a paralyzing force becomes a source of excitement and anticipation. The very idea of addressing a room full of people no longer terrifies you; it excites you. With this newfound excitement, you find yourself well-equipped to tackle high-pressure situations with remarkable ease. Toastmasters, in essence, reshape your relationship with stress It doesn't just alleviate it; it transforms it into a force that propels you forward, empowering you to thrive in the face of challenging public speaking engagements. So, as you navigate the demanding world of presentations, Toastmasters becomes your trusted companion, enabling you not only to conquer your fears but to embrace them, turning stress into a catalyst for personal and professional growth if you're seeking a more balanced and stress-free existence, continue this journey of personal growth and witness how the skills and confidence you acquire help you manage the real-world challenges that come your way.

Here's to a future filled with less stress and more success!

Dear Toastmasters and Avid Newsletter Lovers,

Over the years, living in this community had boosted my confidence leading me to hone my skills in different aspects such as social skills, technology, craftsmanship, creativity and quality.

Toastmasters International discovered the artist inside me in the way that Shakespeare found the girl in the poem, ‘The violet by the mossy stone’.

As the VPPR for the year 2023/2024, I was thrilled from the start to work on newsletters, my ultimate pleasure as the Vice President Public Relations

Through countless challenges to collect articles and manage time for the designing and editing, I was able to engage myself as the chief designer and the editor in designing this newsletter. We successfully finished collecting articles and designing the template by working on the newsletter since the month of August. The fruitful output of hard work for three months has crafted the most precious memories among the club members and Toastmasters from other clubs.

Today, we proudly present the pinnacle of the hard work by VPPR Team, Editing team and the Toastmasters whose articles are on the newsletter.

I offer my heartiest gratitude for all the resourceful Toastmasters and my dearest members on their dedication and support to make our newsletter for the term 1 for the year 2023/ 2024

We value your opinions and expect to improve from your comments and suggestions.

A significant milestone of the club, the 8th installation ceremony was held on the 10th of September 2023. I was excited to participate in my first installation ceremony since the day I first heard about it.

All the memories started from the day before the installation ceremony. A preceremony day filled with dance rehearsals, beautiful song practices, and crafting of event day decorations items at Toastmaster Hisura's house Everyone worked together to make the next day dazzle. The dance group practiced their routine, the singing crew rehearsed beautiful songs for the event, and the Master of Ceremonies completed their final rehearsal for the ceremony. It was an enjoyable day filled with memorable moments that will last forever

The Installation ceremony took place at the beautiful venue, The Stallions - Gonapala. The event began at 9 AM while welcoming the distinguished guests and lighting of the traditional oil lamp.

This momentous event was graced by the Chief Guest, DTM Arunasalam Balraj, Toastmasters International President 2017–2018. DTM Balraj shared invaluable insights on communication and leadership, while the elected President of Horana Toastmasters Club, TM Hisura Munasinghe, reflected on his Toastmasters journey during the president's speech

Inducting and awarding certificates to new members added colour to the momentous occasion. Followed by several inspiring and heart-touching speeches from distinguished guests, the event proceeded to recognize the new executive committee of the Horana Toastmasters Club.

As the event drew to the end, the proud members of the newly installed committee headed on to seize the day and the arduous journey that lies ahead It was not just an installation; it was a full celebration with speeches, hearty conversations, food, music, and dancing, simply a spectacularly unforgettable day filled with excitement, energy, and passion. It was a spectacularly unforgettable day. All our hard work paid to make this event successful.

My Toastmasters journey up to this moment has been nothing but memorable Now I feel more confident to speak when I speak to my fellow Toastmasters or any individual, I meet for the first time.

Being a Toastmaster made my experience that, “The only limits that we have are the limits that we set on ourselves”.

On August 20, 2023, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Icebreaker Session of Division E's Council Meeting at the Renuka City Hotel This event was a testament to the welcoming and friendly atmosphere that Toastmasters fosters, and it left a lasting impact on all who attended. The day was an extraordinary success in every sense, overflowing with inspiration, personal growth, and the formation of meaningful connections. As I look back on the experience, I can't help but feel a sense of pride in being part of such a vibrant and supportive community.

The event was a celebration of our shared commitment to personal and professional development, offering a range of engaging activities and insightful speeches that resonated with every attendee It was a reminder of the incredible potential that resides within each one of us, waiting to be unlocked through the power of effective communication and leadership. One of the most remarkable aspects of the day was the opportunity to meet and interact with all the officials from Division E This gathering allowed us to engage in meaningful discussions about the future plans of our club. It was heartening to see how dedicated officials were to supporting and guiding us towards our goals. The exchange of ideas and strategies was enlightening, and it served as a valuable resource for our continued growth as Toastmasters

However, what truly made this event exceptional was the chance to connect with neighbouring clubs. We had in-depth discussions on how we can collaborate, share experiences, and support one another on our respective journeys. It was a powerful reminder of the strength of unity and the collective ambition that drives us all As I write this article, I can't help but be grateful for the opportunities that Toastmasters provides. It's not just about improving our communication and leadership skills; it's about the relationships we build, the knowledge we gain, and the support we receive from likeminded individuals on a shared mission.

The Division E Icebreaker Session and First Council Meeting were more than just a gathering; they were an affirmation of our shared values and the unwavering commitment to personal growth and development. I look forward to taking the lessons learned from this event and applying them to our club's journey As we continue our path as Toastmasters, let's remember that our growth is intertwined, and together we can achieve the remarkable.

In the spirit of connection and shared growth, I encourage all Toastmasters to continue embracing the opportunities that come our way Let's keep the momentum alive and look forward to more enriching experiences ahead. Our journey as Toastmasters is a collective one, and together, we can reach new heights.

Exactly after 4 years of silence, Horana Toastmasters made their Annual Fun Day out. We gathered in Horana Town and started driving into the Hotel by 8.00 a.m.

We were warmly welcomed by the hotel staff, and afterward, we enjoyed several fun activities conducted by the organizing committee. First, it was a game called ”Dance & Freeze” and TM Chathurika won it. Then everyone was divided into 4 teams and a short drama Competition was held based on randomly selected topics. DTM Moditha and his team won the 1st place with their great sense of acting. Finally, we had a Karaoke session where our members showcased their hidden singing talents with a pure bundle of joy.

After lunch, it was “Pool Time”. We spent 3 hours in the pool and got back to the balcony to have some quality time while enjoying the evening tea with chit chat. We left at 6:00 pm and drove back to our homes On that day, we collected a lot of joyful and memorable moments to our Horana Toastmasters memory lane.

It was a great day to remember in my Toastmasters memories!!

My first ever themed meeting as Toastmaster of the day was “Beyond Boundaries”. As the TMOD, I was privileged to lead this event which was indeed an unforgettable experience. The meeting was graced by the presence of our esteemed Area Director, TM Ashoka Rathugamage

With the encouragement of VPE and the President, my determination was boosted. Their support gave me the confidence to accept the role, especially since the theme deeply connected with my own aspirations. Preparation for the meeting was vital, given the theme's significance.

TM Sajini conducted an interactive game session to enhance the knowledge of Toastmasters’ history, commemorating the 99th anniversary of Toastmasters International. This initiative contributed to develop our understanding and knowledge on Toastmasters and its rich history.

This meeting showed us how Toastmasters empowers individuals to overcome their hesitations, break their own boundaries, and celebrate milestones. It was a testament to the camaraderie and growth that this organization fosters, as we all came

together inspired by the theme "Beyond Boundaries."

As the clock strikes midnight and we bid farewell to the 2022/23 Toastmasters year, Horana Toastmasters Club welcomed the new Toastmasters year 2023/24 with the spirit of celebrations and new hopes.

The first meeting was conducted for the theme "Suits" which indicates elegance and professionalism. Everyone attended the meeting wearing suits and that added extra color to a club meeting.

The meeting started the gathering with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the past year's achievements and expressed excitement for the beginning of the new year ahead.

After the official address of the President, we have taken a moment to recognize outstanding contributions and milestones at the Club, Area, Division, and District levels. All the certificates, awards, and tokens of appreciation were handed over to deserving members This not only boosts morale but also motivates everyone to strive for excellence in the coming year

Next, round robin session was conducted with excitement where the Round-robin Master encouraged the members to share their New Year's resolutions or goals, fostering a sense of support and accountability within the team. It was an opportunity to strengthen bonds, boost morale, and set the tone for a successful year ahead.

Toastmasters meeting continued with wellorganized prepared speeches, engaging table topics, and encouraging evaluations. The suit theme meeting was officially concluded with a vow of having a successful year at Horana Toastmasters.

All the members and guests enjoyed the followership that reminded us of the significant value of building a positive culture in Toastmasters meetings That was a chance unwind, bond with members, and start the year a positive note Finally, this gathering reminds us that beyond the daily grind, we are community that shares moments of joy and growth.

Ancient people believed the souls of their dead loved ones are coming back during the winter. November 1st is the ‘All Saints day’ of chasing these ghosts and evening before is ‘All Hallows Eve’, later became ‘Halloween’. Celebrating this, the hauntmasters of the Panadura Toastmasters Club; the hosting club invited the ghouls of the Horana Toastmasters Club (Horana) for a joint meeting.

The timer was the Grim Reaper; TM Mahiru from Horana TMC and Ah Counter was the ghost played by TM Vidun of Panadura TMC. Grammarian was TM Anupa of Panadura TMC who had dressed as a Cyber Killer. The word of the day ‘Eerie’ was introduced by him. In Saving ‘Gotham City’, the batman, TM Hisura, President of Horana TMC explained his ‘General Evaluator’ role.

TM Kavisha from Panadura TMC dressed as Miss Lolly, the candy creator, gave the challenge of creating a new candy during the Round Robin session Scary, tasty, bloody, spicy candies were suggested giving a warm-up to the meeting. She appreciated each member with a candy.

Suddenly with a scary, yet euphonious background music, the Dracula, TM Malindu from Panadura TMC made a dramatic entrance. He gifted male members with a candy and female members with a kissed chocolate. But for Kanchana he did a specialty, by giving her (him) both a candy and a kissed chocolate. Mohini; TM Chathuni (Panadura), TM Lochana (Horana), Dracula and Enid Sinclair; TM Savindi (Horana) delivered their wonderful prepared speeches. Mohini won the ‘Best Prepared Speaker’ title.

Wednesday; TM Sajini (Horana), Kanchana, Coco; TM Lilan (Horana) and Harley queen evaluated the speeches respectively. In the meantime, members enjoyed the candies distributed and Dracula could only kiss the chocolates

On 29th October, all were presented at Thesaurus Computer Centre and decorated it creating an eerie atmosphere. Outside the hall looked like a makeup room, because all the hauntmasters and ghouls were eagerly getting ready for the ‘Best Halloween Costume’ contest After all preparations, ‘Heaven ends here’ door, lead to the eerie room, with Joker, grim reaper, Mohini, and many characters

With a scary music, Kanchana; TM Seran (Panadura), gave a terrifying start. Harley queen; TM Pamesha, President of Panadura TMC welcomed the guests. TMOD was introduced with the Joker’s laugh playing in the background. TM Venuja of Panadura TMC gave a life to the Halloween meeting with his role.

Wednesday came to the stage dancing in her style to play the role of Table Topic master. Batman became the ‘Best Table Topic Speaker’. Table topics evaluators, TM Chandula and Batman, performed a great job.

To add entertainment to the meeting, Panadura organized a game session and all have enjoyed that. Last but not least, after a tight competition the Grim Reaper and the Dracula, won the cochampionship of the ‘Best Halloween Costume’ contest

After a delicious treat of Halloween sweets, a photo shoot took place to capture the memories of a successful joint club meeting.

02 Roots of Toastmasters journey

I get very emotional when I start to speak about my roots in Toastmasters. I joined the fraternity in 2010 when I joined the ten weeks Youth Leadership Programme conducted at my school They said that it is about communication and leadership.

And the Toastmasters who came to conduct that programme was Smedley Toastmaster club.

Brilliant Club! Brilliant Toastmasters! I fondly recall my coordinator DTM Dilmi Weragama She is someone who changed my life.

This programme was more than public speaking. For me, it was confidence building. But it gave me a such a boost.

Now when I think about it, everything I have achieved at school was from this programme Later on, I became a prefect, a games captain. Later, I joined the gavel club at my school and won some contests.

Officially I can say I was reborn when I join KDU in my first year, September in 2017 Officially to be a Toastmaster , I joined KDU Toastmasters in 2017

Future plans as a Toastmaster

equated with the power comes with the held position, rather than being associated with responsibilities This is why the drama of the political arena often comes to mind when we think of leadership, especially in the local context.

However, leadership is a choice that everyone can make, regardless of their position. It involves taking risks and managing to achieve specific set goals. This requires personal commitment and conscious decision-making to act as a key to thrive as a leader.

In my journey in Toastmasters, I have held some leadership roles that molded me to think in a different way and see the world from a different angle. I thought it was easy to become a leader. Yes, for the name's sake, it's easy. But to set a benchmark and be an example to others took a U-turn in my mind from what I was already thinking about leadership.

In the role of a leader, it is required to change and adapt to circumstances, ultimately transforming the leader in the journey as a result.

While we can empower others and develop people, a leader should have qualities such as integrity, empathy, and courage. Also, being a good listener is going to act as a key when you are a leader. In my journey in Toastmasters, it taught me to gain knowledge and hands-on experiences on all the above. It takes a person to step outside the comfort zone, take risks, come up with innovative ideas, and lead by example.

Leadership is an opportunity that lies at your door We can either embrace it or just be silent and not accept. If we do, it's not only going to suck the energy out of the leader; it will transform the leader within as well

It will be a golden opportunity to make a fine positive impact on others to create a better future for everyone.

I came to know about Toastmasters club way back in 2010, through my office, but couldn’t get the membership due to personal reasons But anyway, I am glad that I made the first step.

I did my first table topic speech at the very first day & it was an amazing really good experience and a great encouragement was received from my fellow toastmasters.

I suppose it is a wonderful experience to be with Horana Toastmasters family since it is such a great place & all the members are very enthusiastic and dynamic. They always want to elevate themselves as Horana Toastmasters.

I got to know about Horana Toastmasters Club through one of my mother’s past students who is a member of the club. I received a warm and friendly welcome as I entered the club, which was a huge relief because I was nervous and hesitant to meet a group of strangers I had never met before. Even though I could not put together a single sentence in the first few days, all the members were supportive and encouraged me to speak. I went through a range of emotions on the first day of my Toastmasters journey. I was nervous to begin with, but then I felt relief and warmth as the day went by, “Don't fear new, unfamiliar places and people because They might be the ones you are missing in your life.”

I was introduced to Horana Toastmasters Club by one of my father's friends, who is a Distinguished Toastmaster. On my first day at the Horana Toastmasters' club meeting, not only I but also all the guests were warmly welcomed. All the Toastmasters were very supportive, friendly, and helpful I felt very interested and decided to join Horana Toastmasters Club as this was the best path for me to build up my confidence in public speaking. Moreover, I always believe in “Following your passion will

always lead you to success.“

I am looking forward to continuing a long journey with Horana Toastmasters Club to build a better version of myself.

I got to know about Toastmasters through my cousin sister, who is a member of another Toastmasters Club. So, she encouraged me to join Toastmasters. When I attended my very first club meeting at Horana Toastmasters Club, I was too nervous, but with the warm welcome, it became much easier to handle The first few days were challenging for me because my public speaking skills were not up to my satisfaction. However, with the intense support of the club members, I am now in a position to speak confidently in

front of an audience. Although I felt a bit nervous at the beginning, Horana Toastmasters Club now feels like a second family, which is very supportive and friendly.
