Dear members,
Panadura Toastmasters Club has been synchronous to home for me over the past years, having known it, seen it, sheltered by it and led it. In the year 2023/2024, I’m honoured to be the Area Director for Panadura Toastmasters Club, one of the long-standing clubs with vibrant membership in Area I-4 and Division I.
The conscious efforts by its past and present leaders to increase member experience going above the basics have paved the way to accomplish numerous victories for the club including consecutively being Presidents Distinguished for more than 10 years. Addressing the development needs of a variety of members different by age, profession and culture and establishing a common supportive club culture has been the secret of their achievements.
The club this year is blessed with a set of young, spirited, and dynamic leaders lead by the passionate and powerful TM Pamesha, who I’m certain will continue to the legacy of Panadura Toastmasters Club. Having achieved Smedley and District 82 membership awards undeniably is a testament to their Courage|Confidence|Commitment. Moreover, the club continues to discover young gems who unleash their hidden speaking potential and shine above the club level.
I believe the Executive Committee, and members will unveil more and more learnings and victories while uplifting Panadura Toastmasters Club to continue spreading its wings across the community.

EMPOWERING TEAMWORK: THE COLLABORATIVE FORCE BEHIND LEADERSHIP
As a toddler, I constantly yearned for a way to convey my feelings to the people around me I tried my hardest, but often, I couldn't express myself because I was either hungry, leading my mother to put me to sleep, or experiencing an itchy sensation that only a milk package could soothe. When I embarked on my university studies, I realized a significant issue with my communication skills I vividly remember a bald-headed man addressing a massive audience in English with unwavering confidence He spoke about the importance of feeling special and making others feel the same way
This experience led me to discover a solution for my communication struggles: Toastmasters It became clear that through my communication skills, I could offer a valuable service to others by providing constructive criticism and a helping hand As soon as I enrolled in university for my higher education, I eagerly joined KDU Toastmasters as a newbie There, I began learning the ABCs of public speaking, aiming to convey my thoughts effectively and fruitfully
Over time, I noticed improvements in my ability to hold small conversations and express my thoughts in written messages. After a year, I became the Vice President of Public Relations, which revealed that communication was not limited to speaking but extended to developing public relations strategies, designing compelling flyers, creating impactful videos, and motivating others
My experience at Toastmasters taught me how to recognize and support people, giving them the recognition they need to keep moving forward. I began applying these lessons in my real life, branching out into the field of design I even started my studies in marketing, promotions, and sales, enabling me to apply my technical knowledge in practical scenarios
Both in my personal life and within the Toastmasters community, I cultivated valuable relationships with professionals and trainers I look back and see a significant improvement in my speaking abilities While I may not be the best, I take pride in knowing that I've achieved something extraordinary Toastmasters is not just about stepping onto a stage, delivering a speech, or winning an award It's about building strong relationships and enhancing networking skills within the professional community, where everyone strives to become a better version of themselves

NOT JUST ANOTHER EDUCATIONAL MEETING
On the 16th of September, Saturday, the members of the Panadura Toastmasters Club gathered at the Thesaurus Computer Centre for their 6th educational meeting
The theme of the meeting was ‘Read a Book’ Although it was to be just another themed meeting, there was a certain magic in the air that day Everyone had brought a book with them as per instructions given by the Toastmaster of the Day One could walk into the room and feel the excitement of the members present. After being introduced by the Sergeant at Arms, the president, TM Pamesha Peiris, started the meeting by introducing the guests and welcoming the attendees But the real magic began when control was handed over to the Toastmaster of the Day, TM Malindu Batheegama
TM Malindu opened the meeting and took us through the usual meeting procedures He kept the theme of the meeting alive by introducing a little game We were supposed to ‘guess the book in the bag’ As clues, he showed us some books he used to read as a child and gave some insight into his background in reading. We were to guess the book in the bag based on those clues and give our guesses at the end of the meeting What a way to keep the excitement going throughout the meeting! This meeting was made even more special by the two educational sessions conducted by our very own Humorous and Evaluation Speech Champion, TM Ravindu Amendra TM Ravindu enlightened us with the sessions ‘Evaluation Elevation’ and ‘Game of Humor’ As well as giving us tips and tricks that would aid us in the contests, we got to witness the stand-up comedian in him Needless to say, they were two sessions that would remain in our memories for days and weeks to come
After the educational sessions, the rest of the meeting was conducted smoothly and TM Malindu was able to hand his control back to the president on a positive note Before he did that, however, he revealed what the mystery book was It turned out to be an atlas Sadly, none of our guesses were correct The meeting officially ended with the announcement of the winners and the taking of the group photo
Looking back, one can agree that this meeting was certainly one to remember The ‘Read a Book’ themed meeting of the Panadura Toastmasters Club proved that Dr Ralph C Smedley’s quote was indeed true: we learn best in moments of enjoyment After all, that is what Toastmasters is all about

THINKING ON YOUR FEET: FIVE STRATEGIES TO EXCEL IN IMPROMPTU SPEAKING
Once, in a high-stakes meeting with senior managers, I found myself facing a question I hadn't anticipated. The room was filled with top executives, and the pressure was telling The question came my way, and I felt the weight of all the eyes looking at me
Attempting to respond, my mind went blank, I stumbled over my words, tripped on my answer and fell flat. The more I tried to recover, the more I stuttered, giving a bad impression Luckily my boss took over and answered the question but later he gave me an ultimatum, to improve the way I speak at meetings
This led me to Toastmasters, which was my saviour and helped me develop my impromptu speaking ability, which led me to better communication not only at the office but in many day to day scenarios as well The following five strategies that helped me can be followed to develop your impromptu communication
1. Stay calm and collected - Maintain a calm and composed behaviour, even when faced with unexpected topics or questions Take a deep breath and pause, before responding, project confidence to the audience Take the pause as an opportunity to structure your speech
2. Adapt to the audience and setting - Be aware of the audience and try to understand what they are looking for in your speech or in your answer Then focus your content to answer those points which will help you connect with the audience
3. Maintain a positive mindset - View impromptu speaking as an exciting opportunity rather than a daunting challenge By reframing the mindset positively, you can turn unexpected moments into memorable speaking opportunities
4. Have a collection of stories, quotes and proverbs - Just like a quiver full of arrows, have a set of stories, quotes and proverbs that you can use in your speech to complement the point you are making By doing this you don’t need to start thinking of content to use, you just need to select which ones to utilize
5. Practice regularly - Impromptu speaking cannot be mastered overnight, and is a skill that needs to be developed step by step Therefore practice with random topics and take opportunities to do an impromptu speech whenever it arises. Each time you practice and each time you do an impromptu speech, you get a bit more closer to mastering it
Give these 5 strategies a go and they will surely help you take your impromptu speaking to the next level

MAROON MEMOIRS
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
The phrase “Where Leaders are Made”, is not an unfamiliar phrase for any Toastmasters worldwide As leaders, most of the time we encounter a lot of situations where we have to volunteer as leaders or where we get appointed as leaders But whether it is volunteered or appointed, finally it comes as a great responsibility under our name As the core values of Toastmasters show, over time, we learn how to respect, and maintain integrity, and how to provide a better service, resulting in excellence If we follow all of these, it's not a secret that we gain special quality where we focus more on quality over quantity We respect each and every one and everything, while maintaining integrity, and providing a better service, resulting in excellence as Toastmasters Not only the big events but also in the simplest club meetings, in the simplest role, we will be able to make it more productive for everyone, by maintaining the core values to produce quality over quantity Also, it will be a great example for society as we provide a service of higher quality, and finally, it ends up with everyone being more ethical and moral. And that’s how it makes Leaders full of values, ethics and morality which craft excellence, in essence, prioritizing substance over overabundance by focusing on higher quality than quantity.
