Being the Sergeant At Arms for year 2020/2021, Vice President Education for year 2021/2022 here I am as the president in year 2022/2023 for a bunch of unique individuals from different education backgrounds, different professions and having different set of talents and skills. And It’s been nearly a year being the president of the Oasis Toastmasters Club. Starting from June 2022 up until today it has been a great journey through ups and downs of the Oasis Family.

I am privileged and honored to be the third lady president and the 12th club president of Oasis Toastmasters Club Nittambuwa though I started my toastmasters’ journey only to improve my communication skills. Apart from the communication skills I ended up improving my public speaking skills and leadership skills. Not only the mentioned skills but also, I was able to create a great network with individuals who are keen on lifelong learning and personal development. All the members of Oasis Family have been a strength towards the journey so far. Their tireless effort, dedication and passion towards toastmasters have made Oasis stronger. I would especially mention the executive committee who stand out for anything and everything despite the hardships we face. As a team we all believe that quality matters over quantity. So that regardless of the recognitions, awards and accolades we all give our fullest cooperation towards improving and growing ourselves. When considering the achievements, we were able to achieve 10 DCP points and gain the Distinguished Club Program and we were able to achieve other educational achievements as well.

In my point of view Oasis as a club differentiates from others due to the positive energy that we bring in and due to the willingness and inclination of all members to lend a helping hand to each other. As the president of Oasis Toastmasters Club my happiness and satisfaction are to see all members breaking through their comfort zone to be the best version of themselves while enjoying the journey of getting there. As to my experience in toastmasters the best part of being a toastmaster is having likeminded people who are willing to learn and grow.

It is with great pleasure that I contribute to the Oasis Toastmasters Club Club Newsletter. As members of this esteemed organization, Toastmasters, I would like to pose a simple question to you all today, "Are you happy with your journey?" The answer to this question may vary from member to member, depending on individual perspectives. In today's fast-paced world, opportunities abound. As humans, we encounter different opportunities every single day, and as Toastmasters members, we are presented with various opportunities such as leadership roles or delivering speeches. It is up to us to seize these opportunities and make the most of them. As William Arthur Ward wisely said, "Opportunities are like sunrises. If you wait too long, you miss them." Embrace these opportunities and let them pave the way for growth, success, and fulfillment in your Toastmasters journey. I am proud of the incredible achievements of Oasis Toastmasters Club Club over the past few years, and I wish all the best to the club and its members as they strive for even greater heights. Let's continue to build on the momentum and give our very best in every activity we undertake on this journey.

As Bobby Unser aptly said, "Success is where preparation and opportunity meet." Let's also remember that change is essential for growth. Let's embrace change together as a team and transform ourselves into even better versions of ourselves.

NISAL WEERAKOON, DTM DISTRICT DIRECTOR District 82

In conclusion, let's keep seizing opportunities, embracing change, and striving for success in our Toastmasters journey. As we continue to learn and grow together, I have no doubt that we will achieve remarkable feats. Here's to the Oasis Toastmasters Club and its bright future!

2. Why club culture is important? Maintenance of club culture in Toastmasters is important mainly because the members are the base of every club. In order to secure members, club culture is a great support. Oasis Toastmasters is well renowned as a club with a friendly atmosphere that supports each other. We do not forget our club's mission of supporting and providing a positive learning experience by maintaining a unique club culture. That way members are comfortable exposing themselves.

CLUB CULTURE

3. How Oasis Club culture is significant? We never miss birthday parties, farewells, conferences, annual trips, and to plan outings. The specialty is we are capturing moments and creating memories. But how comes the culture? Yes, we have some tips.

1. What is an organizational culture? All team members' behavior is influenced and guided by the values, expectations, and practices that make up the organization's

culture.

See

it

as

the

assortment

of

characteristics that define your organization. While a dysfunctional workplace culture brings out tendencies that can impede even the most successful firms, a great workplace culture showcases beneficial features that result in enhanced performance.

3.1 ‘Family’ concept Family is the basic unit in society; it is the place where we learn to grow ourselves. Can’t we apply the same concept to our club? Yes, of course. We are introduced as Oasis Family because of the mutual connectedness. Through the unofficial group, we are often connected and communicate frequently. Whenever one of the members is in trouble immediate actions are taken to help that

“The right culture provides the glue that holds an organization together.”

person. As a result, when members have a difficult situation, they all remember Oasis family members and they share whatever they want. That is why we are a family.

3.2 Fun FUN? Fun is the motto of Oasis Toastmasters members. After the meeting, we have a special session to have a fun time having snacks. Apart from that we organize trips, outings, and other gatherings when we get bored. If one of the members is feeling stressed the suggestion pops out—” Let’s party!”. So, ladies and gentlemen fun is the most important element we have.

3.3 Share the moments Birthday parties are a must within our club. Recently we celebrated our madam President’s birthday party. She was surprised to have a delicious cake and a wonderful gathering. Why only the happiest moments? We do have sad moments as well. Recently, we missed a few members due to migration (but they promised to continue the membership). We did not forget to have farewell to them. Sharing moments is also an important aspect of maintaining club culture.

Oasis is special to me, and to other members. The main reason behind this is the bond we have. No language differences, cultural differences, or any other demarcations because we are a family. A family with a growth mindset where everybody does mistakes and learns from those, a family which provides a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop themselves.

THE BATTLE

“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.” – Dale Carnegie

We all struggle and fight in most of the instances of life. Maybe you are tired of fighting. So, I am writing this article to encourage you. Don’t quite because you are destined to win. Whatever the fight you are involved in you have to keep yourself strong.

People tend to suicide, when they cannot bear up the stress. When the battle goes bad you should be more careful. Let us see how we can manage stress.

I you are experiencing anything bad that you cannot bear up alone, you should share it with someone you can keep trust on. Then that person will help you to get out of your condition. If the things going bad to the extent where your friend or family can’t help you, you should get help from a counsellor. Seeking help from a professional can help you to fight back stress. If you feel like you cannot control yourself, visit a doctor.

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” – Thomas Edison

It is important to learn about stress management. All of us are stressed in one way or another. There fore stress is a normal mental condition. But some people cannot bear the stress. In such instances people need help. Let’s see what should be done to manage the stress. If you are a student dealing with lots of academic work, do finish them before the deadline. Then you will not be stressed in the last minute. If you are having a bad time with financial problems, you can talk with your debtors and arrive in to decision. So there is always an easy way for problem solving than suiciding.

I hope you all are ready to fight back the battles you are in. If you observe well, you will see many solutions and remedies for your problems. So be a keen observer. If you want to help others, listen to their miseries. There can be people who need emotional support around you. find them and help them to get out from the unhealthy condition. Written by

Unfolding The UNFOLD TM SANKAHANIE SURAWEERA

After all these difficulties we had fun, had a bath, had our lunch, and returned home. While we were back home, We were about to unfold an unforgettable weekend. We the Oasis toastmasters were rising and shining early morning on 06th November 2022 to travel from Nittambuwa to Kandy. The punctuality barrier started with the last member picking up since she was doing her hair in the saloon while we were still sleepy, and it was around 5.00 AM. I should thank God for not having such a fashion sense to disturb my sleep. After fetching all the kids of Oasis, we were heading towards Kandy. To begin the journey with the energy our first stop was for breakfast. After having a peaceful and mouthwatering breakfast the disaster begins. We had a gorgeous lady in a saree in our bunch who had a special role to play in the event. Woefully her pair of heels did not allow her to end up in the location in style. But she was lucky enough to have an Oasis Family member who had the same shoe size and she ended up wearing a glamorous saree and a pair of gents’ sandals.

After buying all the groceries that we needed for the planned fun night of our gang, before ending up at home for the weekend we headed to a place that has a breathtaking view at night. We had fun and spent around an hour in Kandy viewpoint and took some memorable photographs. On that night we had the best fun night ever eating, singing, and dancing. Not only that but also, we had deep chats on different topics, cookery classes, debates, and yoga classes until we slept around 2.00 AM.

we did not forget to have a hot cup of coffee from a small boutique where one of our members had his dream girl and buy some sweets for our family members who were

looking

forward

to

meeting us and having some sort of medicine in their

The next day the plan was to visit Sarasavi Dola at the University of Peradeniya. On our way to the Sarasavi Dola, we learned a lot about pigs also. Do not wonder how but try to get the hands-on experience since it will be worth the effort. The trekking to the place was fun and tiring at the same time because we all had one big specific problem on that day. But Sarasavi Dola was worth the trek.

hand for stomachache.

This is the unfolding story of our journey after the Unfold 2022 Division Conference of Division F, H, and K.

The team started the journey again with the “All is Well” mindset. All the things were flowing smoothly until one of the three cars messed up the way toward the correct location. Anyway, we ended up in the correct place on time. The day was well spent, and all members enjoyed the day except me who had to run here and there as a result of being an official for the event.

How I Feel About The Role-

TABLE TOPIC MASTER Written by

Toastmaster Sakuni Jayathilaka

N

ormally a Toastmasters meeting contains several roles. In order, they are grammarian, ah counter, the timer, general evaluator, Round robin master, and table topic master.

Additionally, after I did the table topic master role I felt confident about being a leader to host a program. It was improved after I did for several times. I could understand how it helps to improve my speaking skills in front of a crowd. As a table topic master, I could improve my leadership because a table topic master is also a kind of leader or a host of that session.

According to me, the role of a Table Topics Master is to conduct the impromptu speaking portion of a Toastmasters meeting. This role is a crucial part of a Toastmasters meeting, as it provides an opportunity for members to practice thinking on their feet and speaking extemporaneously.

Recently, I got an opportunity to do the Topic master role and I thought of doing it in a creative way. I felt a bit nervous because I have to make some interesting topics that participants can talk about more. That was a kind of challenge for me. I selected some role-plays which were entertaining. Anyway, it was the most interesting session. I was proud of myself.

Also sometimes I had to make some enjoyable topics for the session and I had to make a successful and enjoyable session. As I think the table topic master role really helps to build my hosting skills, my leadership skills, and also my speaking skills. I could keep a stable positive confidence by doing this role. Overall, the Table Topics Master role is a great opportunity for members to practice their impromptu speaking skills and develop their confidence in public speaking.

Focus 5.Discipline

1.Plan Plan your speech. Know what’s your purpose in the speech Be clear what to do you want to convey through your speech. Think what’s in it for me (wiifm) from audience perspective .Equip your speech with a compelling genuine story which supports your message “Write it “!!!!

2.Train If you feel your skill test is not enough to deliver a satisfactory speech. Get the necessary training. It can be writing a speech with purpose, using humor to connect, using body language to enhance your delivery, using vocal variety for clarity, using language to add meaning musicality to your speech ,Know the dynamics of judging criteria. Get the help from your mentor or an expert in certain niche “Reach out”!!!

Countless articles say that only by relying on your self can you get ahead but there are times when only by working in a team will you fulfill your dreams. Everyone knows that team work means working together with a group of people and thereby forming a team Teamwork is an essential aspect of our personal and professional lives. It is the ability to work together towards a common goal, to share ideas, and support each other through the process. One of the key benefits of teamwork is that it allows us to achieve our goals more efficiently.

When people work together, they can combine their skills, strengths, and knowledge to produce better results than any individual could achieve alone. In a team, members can rely on each other and delegate tasks to the person with the right expertise, which can save time and increase productivity. Furthermore, teamwork promotes collaboration and communication. Team members can share ideas and opinions, and discuss different viewpoints to reach the best possible outcome. By listening to each other, team members can identify potential issues, brainstorm solutions, and work towards a consensus. This helps to build trust and respect among team members, which are essential for effective collaboration.

"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships." When joining a Toastmasters club, you not only join one club but gain access to the knowledge and resources of toastmasters around the world. In addition, teamwork within Toastmasters provides an opportunity for personal growth and development. By working in a team, individuals can develop leadership skills, learn to communicate effectively and hone their problem-solving abilities. This can be applied not only within Toastmasters but also in other areas of their personal and professional life. In Toastmasters too, teamwork is an often emphasized aspect. While an individual needs to strive and work harder towards achieving their goals, there will always be a team of other Toastmasters aiding them to achieve that goal. Joining a Toastmasters club automatically makes you a team member. As a Club member, a toastmaster can work within their club to help achieve different objectives. In fact, many of the club awards are geared towards how well a Toastmaster club performs and for a club to perform well, it needs to have great teamwork. In conclusion, teamwork is essential for success in all aspects of life. It allows us to achieve our goals more efficiently, promotes communication and collaboration, fosters a sense of accountability and responsibility, and provides an opportunity for personal and professional growth. So, let's embrace the power of teamwork and work together toward a brighter dream.

Teamwork also fosters a sense of accountability and responsibility. When people work together, they are responsible not only for their own work but also for the work of the team as a whole. Each member is accountable for their actions, and they must work towards the common goal. This can create a sense of ownership, commitment, and motivation, which can lead to greater satisfaction and success

TM MANURA Spend some quality time with a bunch of people who are not only lovely, but also energetic and enthusiastic. It was wonderful day and we highly appreciate their commitment for visiting us all the way from Nittambuwa.

TM RASHMI Joint meeting with Oasis TMC is oneof-kind, lively experience. As a club officer from a relatively new community club, I was able to pick up many good things from the joint meeting we had that we should implement and keep doing. I really enjoyed the energy your entire club brought to the meeting. Saw such a great turn out from your club.

TM ACHINTHA I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for the joint meeting we had recently. It was truly a pleasure to meet and engage with members of both clubs in a collaborative and supportive environment. I appreciate the effort and time taken by each and every one of you to make this meeting a success. It was inspiring to hear from so many talented speakers and see the growth and progress made by each individual. I hope that this is just the beginning of many more joint meetings to come. Thank you for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside all of you.

TM PAMESHA It was a wonderful morning with Oasis Family. The love is in the air was our theme. We had a fun and exciting meeting with the wonderful Oasis TMs. The Oasis TMs are very friendly young and energetic. All the role players conducted the meeting in a fun and exciting manner and incorporated the theme very nicely. Oasis and Panadura joint meeting meeting would be one of the best meetings I have ever encountered.

On the day we as Panadura Toastmasters, had the great opportunity to share our Valentine with Oasis Toastmasters as a Valentine Join meeting. The Exco members of both clubs were working on the planning of the join meeting prior to the meeting day, to make it a success. As planned, everyone from both clubs arrived on time to the location, to the right at the middle, where it was near for the people from both clubs from both ends. And on the day, with the leadership of Champion Speaker, Ravindu Amendra as the TMOD, both clubs had a great Valentine which all of them were loved and would love to add one of the best Valentine memories they had.

We discovered a new family 100 miles away from our very own..Waking up on a Sunday morning for a joint meeting was totally worth it due to the new friendships we made and especially the little things we learned from them to add to our meetings. The round robin and table topic sessions were on a different level that we laughed so hard and became one family for a moment. From planning to the meeting formalities to the little chit chat after the meeting - the experience was golden!.

TM SHEHANI The joint meeting we had on 12th of February 2023 with Oasis Toastmasters Club was a really good experience. It was the first time I met them in person. The meeting was a very interesting and fun meeting with the contribution of all the role players adding different colours to the meeting starting from TMOD to all other role players. Also through the panel discussion conducted by TM Chamodith Ranasinghe on the topic how our hobbies can add value & support us in our career, I gained new insights and it was a very fruitful session. EVANGELIST

Who is this Evangelist? In simple terms evangelist is a person who believes in something or someone where as it could be a religion or nature or people. Then who is this ‘Oasis Evangelist’ , Oasis evangelist is a person who believe in Oasis Toastmasters. Furthermore when talking about Oasis Toastmasters, we believe that public relation is the bridge to outer world. Where the none toastmaster get be aware about toastmaster. Therefore our talent team of Ostylish gang got together and came up with an amazing plan.

The soul reason for this is to make the non-toastmasters aware about toastmaster and by making their dreams come into reality. So that eventually our oasis family also will go bigger and bigger.

Where as we thought that it would be great if be could recognize then and show our gratitude by recognizing them. Hence in order for that Oasis PR team launched Oasis Evangelist.
