Amazing and Humorous installation, networking bonds and a club filled with energetic people who call themselves Family.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Once upon a time, this might have been targets and goals but now I can confidently say these are facts and accomplishments
The growth of Torrington Toastmasters has just been a remarkable journey that ensures the power of change when a group of amazing people are put together, backed up by loyal family members to help them through tough times. being the president of Torrington Toastmasters has been nothing short of remarkable, exciting nerve-racking at the same time crazy.
I believe presidency is not just a position it’s not a duty but a responsibility.
We tend to drift apart through this journey but as a president, it’s my duty to bring those people back into the right path, is what I always thought but this club opened my eyes to a new perspective to see things
Instead of obstructing their solo route I decided to encourage the difference of creativity instead of bringing them into one path, let them travel on their terms, but just making sure that that journey is guided to our final destination
This path might be long might and risky might be creative but that’s what I mean That’s what makes Torrington amazing it’s all in or nothing
There has been One SPECIAL Person who has not only guided us but walked with us along this journey and that would be none other than our Area Director and mentor TM Shani Goonesekera for always being “GIVING”.
It’s not powerful people comes from powerful places but powerful people make places powerful. This is the exact story of Torrington and its exco
You will face series of challenges, unforeseen circumstances, but that’s nothing new to us because we’re the club that has gone to the worst of the worst, but reached out to be the best of the best just be you because being you is what makes a Torrington special and being you is what makes Torrington just Torrington

GUIDING LIGHTS: THE UNREVEALED INSIGHTS OF LEADERSHIP
BY DTM NISAL WEERAKOON
Stepping into a leadership role opens up a myriad of learning opportunities Here are some key insights that every leader should embrace on their path to effective leadership
Charting the Course of New Ideas
If you want to lead effectively, you must be willing to adapt to new ideas and methods as the world around you changes. The key is to embrace a growth mindset and constantly seek new knowledge and perspectives.
It's time to let go of old habits and embrace the unknown with courage and excitement! Let's be open to new ideas, learn from diverse perspectives, and cultivate a mindset that thrives on constant learning and improvement By doing so, you'll become the visionary leader you were always meant to be!
5 Points to ponder when new ideas come your way,
Does the idea align with the organization/team goals and values?
Can the idea be realistically implemented given your resources and constraints?
What potential impact could the idea have on your team, organization, or customer base? Consider both shortterm and long-term effects
Be prepared to adapt the implementation plan based on feedback and changing circumstances
It is essential to monitor progress and be willing to pivot if the idea isn't delivering the expected results
Remember, Old Keys won't open New Doors.
Uplifting the Confidante of a Leader
Recognition is not always about giving trophies or certificates It can be just saying "Thank you" at the correct time When leaders forget to use the most powerful tool, it comes out from their team's performance and retention
3 Points to ponder as a leader,
As a leader, never take your people for granted; make it a priority to appreciate your team
An individual who feels valued will consistently exceed expectations, as appreciation is one of the most powerful motivators in life
Recognition from leaders can foster a sense of unity and teamwork And it significantly boosts the morale of the team
Acknowledge someone's efforts at just the right moment and in just the right manner, and they'll cherish that memory for a lifetime.
5
The leader serves, not rules.
When a team member makes a mistake, and the leader starts shouting at the member, that member regrets being part of that team and considers not taking up any opportunity in the future Sounds familiar?
We often find leaders who blame their team members for the smallest mistake Some leaders think that shouting at another person will help the other person to learn a lesson
Next time, before you shout at your team member here are four points to ponder as a leader,
Leaders who blame their team fail to accept responsibility for their actions or decisions
Leaders should always have a Plan B and try to fix the issue
When leaders blame their team, it can significantly diminish the trust and respect team members have for them
Blame-shifting leaders miss opportunities to learn and grow from challenges. And blaming others often means that the root causes of problems are not addressed.
Always try to be a LEADER, not a BOSS.
When you next step into a leadership role, consider these Unrevealed Insights of Leadership. They will offer you a fresh perspective and direction for your leadership journey.

PAJAMA PALOO
If there's one thing our Toastmasters clu inject energy and creativity into every proclaimed "Gen Z" of the group, we're ways to engage and inspire our mem Education asked me to step up as the To knew we had to do something special reflected our dynamic, innovative spirit
And thus, the idea for Pajama Palooza members strolling into our meeting roo coziest pajamas, clutching their favo blankets The atmosphere was ele anticipation for the fun-filled evening were cookies – because what's a pajama ?
Of course, no pajama party would be co games. We kicked things off with a se wrote notes to their future selves, sealin capsule to be opened exactly one year l moment of reflection and anticipation And then came the pièce de résistance –
Yes, you read that right A full-blown pillow fight, right in the heart of our Toastmasters meeting The room erupted in laughter and excitement as pillows flew through the air, with even our guests joining in on the fun. It was a moment of sheer joy and camaraderie, proving that professionalism and playfulness can indeed go hand in hand.
TM GAHANA KARUNANANTHAN MEMBER | STEERING COMMITTEE - PR
As we wrapped up the evening, exhausted but exhilarated, I couldn't help but reflect on the magic of our Toastmasters club We're more than just a group of speakers – we're a community united by a shared passion for growth, learning, and yes, the occasional pillow fight And if Pajama Palooza taught us anything, it's that sometimes, letting loose and embracing our inner child is the best way to foster connection and creativity

A REFLECTION ON MEMORIES: MY TOASTMASTERS JOURNEY
As the Toastmaster of the day for our recent meeting themed "In Retrospect," I had the pleasure of guiding our members through a journey of introspection We explored how our past experiences have shaped our present lives, creating a meaningful and memorable evening for all
One of the most engaging parts of the meeting was the round-robin session led by Toastmaster Thalaal Naushad. Members shared their most notorious childhood memories, which gave the opportunity for all to have a little bit of fun.
Another impactful segment was the table topic session, skillfully conducted by Toastmaster Gahana Karunanandhan Members shared their most beautiful childhood memories, evoking feelings of warmth and nostalgia This session reminded us of the simple joys of youth and the importance of cherishing these moments
Overall, the meeting was a resounding success, leaving everyone feeling uplifted and inspired. It served as a powerful reminder of the role that our past plays in shaping our present and future selves I was delighted to see how engaged and enthusiastic our members were throughout the meeting, demonstrating the strength of our Toastmasters community
The "In Retrospect" meeting was a true celebration of our shared memories and experiences. It reminded us of the importance of reflection and gratitude, and I look forward to our future meetings as we continue to learn and grow together.

SAY “YES”; LOUD AND PROUD
“Nish, how’d you like to be our Contest Chair this season?” A simple question to which an affirmative response paved the way to one of the most rewarding experiences anyone could have as a Toastmaster.
What a treat!
Let me tell you what you’re going to do as a Contest Chair.
First, you’re going to realise that you’re in charge of making sure that the Contest is run smoothly
Then, you’re going to find a Chief Judge. Once your Chief Judge confirms their participation, you’re going to look for a Contest Master – who’ll be your right hand man or woman – and with the CM by your side, you’re going to look for Timers, Tally Counters and Sergeants at Arms
Now, let me tell you what you can’t possibly know until you’ve played the part of Contest Chair.
“Being a Contest Chair transforms you into a bona-fide leader of epic proportions.
You’re a big deal! You will learn how to modify your tone to fit the person you’re dealing with You will learn how to work under pressure and find solutions to a problem that you never thought would exist You will find comfort in and trust the members of your club You will learn to prioritise what’s important, and you’ll learn to stick to the pecking order while considering the sensitivities of those around you.
Instead of losing your cool when you realise that the certificates are missing, you’ll spring to action and have them printed in 5 minutes from a nearby communication”
TM NISHEDHA INDRARATNE VICE PRESIDENT MEMBERSHIP CENTRAL COLOMBO TOASTMASTERS CLUB
You’ll learn to trust the process. You’ll learn to say “Yes, Contest Master, we can proceed” with confidence!
Most important, you’ll learn that organising a contest is something you – yes, you – can do! I was lucky enough to be Torrington Toastmasters Club’’s Contest Chair this past contest season- and from that experience, I gained the most amazing of all consequences- I found like minded individuals and friends in your membership, and I found a new place to visit that I can very easily call home!
So, the next time someone says “How’d you like to be our Contest Chair this season?” – do your future self a favour and say “Yes”. Say it proudly. Say it loudly.

In 2023, Torrington Toastmasters was with just seven members Then, six more, to take up the responsibility to lead the club, and BOOM! we were a squad of 13! Fast forward to March 2024, and we've now grown into a tight-knit family of 24, overflowing with energy and good vibes
Our club's magic lies within our members. Each brings their unique energy, making every Saturday meeting special. The youthfulness and hype of our crew creates an atmosphere where every meetup is all about the energy.
Adapting to what our members want is the key factor at Torrington. Transitioning from online to physical meetings, now meeting biweekly with unexpectedly surprising hangouts in between
One of the hallmarks of Torrington Toastmasters is our willingness to step out of our comfort zones and embrace new experiences Whether it's switching up meeting styles or bonding over food and fun after every meeting, we're all about embracing new vibes and growing together with the energy we have as a unique family
Our energy has never gone unnoticed thanks to the killer spirit, talented members and one of a kind meetings we host
SPEEDOMETER
As the Vice President Membership of Torrington Toastmasters Club for the term 2023-2024, I've seen our Executive Committee’s dedication firsthand. Their commitment to making Torrington feel like home for everyone is truly unmatched. Our growth from 7 to 13 to 24 members is all thanks to their hustle and the tight bond we share And not to forget, the “one in a million” kind of ideas our 22-year-old President would come up with during midnight
It has been 8 months as the Vice President Membership, and I am proud to say is that we have one strong team who are more like family Not a day passes without the members planning up for something wild and crazy; at least to meet up and go bowling We know we have a unique gift when we get to attract members who love to enjoy this unique atmosphere by tagging along with us and making them reminisce about the best perks in life
We may have started small, but together, we've created a club that's truly special Here's to many more amazing meetings and unforgettable moments with our Torrington fam!

MEMBER CORNER
As I reflect on my journey within our Toastmasters club, I can't help but marvel at the transformation I've undergone. When I first walked through those doors, I was filled with nervousness and anticipation, unsure of what to expect Little did I know, I was about to embark on a journey that would not only enhance my public speaking skills but also shape me into a more confident and empowered individual.
As I am a person not from Colombo and far away from the city, the members of this club were the first and last family I found who loved me and who I love until now
For this family I believe there is no ending and it is eternal. Toastmasters has sharpened both my speaking and leadership skills, extending beyond the meeting room I've learned effective communication, active listening, and storytelling, while finding a supportive community passionate about personal and professional growth
TM SALMAAN HALEEM
MEMBER | STEERING COMMITTEE - MEMBERSHIP
I'm grateful for the opportunities that Toastmasters provide, reminding me of my progress and the journey ahead With an incredible support system, I'm excited to see where this path leads This expresses my feeling towards Torrington toastmasters club Being Earnest.
I joined by, let’s say, a dubious circumstance. Mainly because I overran my mouth a bit too much. When I started I didn’t like it much
In anything you do, it is important to be earnest. To do things sincerely and with conviction. Regardless of the activity. Regardless of whether you like it or not. Regardless of how bad you are. Regardless of whether you are forced to be there. As long as you are earnest, people will accept your mistakes, because they know you are trying And as long as you are earnest, people will accept you
TM NAVEED SEEDIN
But I was here, and since I was here I would do it earnestly It didn’t take too long for the members in the club to grow on me and for me to start liking it and then enjoy being at Toastmasters.
So, for new members, you may not know what you are doing, you may be a bit confused But if you do things earnestly things will work out

FROM A CONTESTANT TO A CHIEF JUDGE
TM YASHODHARA HEMACHANDRA AREA DIRECTOR - D4
For years, my passion for public speaking drew me towards contest participation However, as responsibilities grew and my journey led me to the role of an Area Director within Toastmasters, the prospect of contesting dwindled Yet, rather than giving up on my connection to contests altogether, I found a new avenue to engage –through judging
The decision to transition from contestant to judge marked a pivotal moment in my Toastmasters journey It was a conscious choice to channel my passion for speaking into a different realm, one that offered unique insights and opportunities for growth Enrolling in the District 82 judges training program was the catalyst for this transformation, opening my eyes to the depth of knowledge and skill required in the art of judging.
Indeed, judging proved to be more than just an alternative to contesting; it became an indispensable part of my journey towards mastery It offered a fresh perspective, allowing me to step back from the spotlight and gain a deeper appreciation for the details of effective communication Through judging, I refined my analytical skills, sharpened my ability to identify strengths and areas for improvement, and cultivated a greater sense of empathy towards fellow speakers
Being a Chief Judge is a remarkable opportunity to develop leadership skills It involves carefully selecting a team and shouldering the responsibility of ensuring fair outcomes Through my experiences as a voting judge and chief judge, I've not only forged new friendships but also gained recognition within the Toastmasters community.
If there's one significant lesson I've gleaned from my experience, it's this: if you aspire to be a champion speaker, embrace judging as an integral part of your journey It's not merely a role to be fulfilled out of obligation but a pathway to personal and professional growth By immersing yourself in the art of evaluation, you gain invaluable insights into the mechanics of effective communication, laying the foundation for success both on and off the stage
“These achievements are personally significant, and I encourage every Toastmaster to embrace the transformative journey of judging
So, are you ready to wear the hat of ‘judge’ in your Toastmasters journey?”
