As I reflect on my term as President for 2023/24, the initial months posed numerous challenges due to our low member base. We worked tirelessly to identify issues, set goals, and rebuild the club Now, 9 months later, I'm thrilled at our collective achievements We expanded our member base, met educational goals, and are aiming for maximum DCP achievements.

This success wasn't a solo effort, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude towards my Exco team, IPP TM Hemakantha Balasooriya, DTM Ananda Gunawardana, our club members, Division F Director, DTM Shehara Dissanayake, Area Director(F2), TM Surani Dias and Area Director(F1), Niluka Dissanayake for their unwavering support.

A special acknowledgment goes to our neighboring clubs, Kadawatha, Kelaniya, Siyane, Ragama, and LNP, for the invaluable support we received from them. Our Toastmasters fraternity also played a crucial role in our success story, with many senior members volunteering for educational sessions and mentoring newbies

As a community club, I believe that we've made a significant impact, nurturing public speaking, communication, and leadership skills of our members. Our personalized approach, identifying individual learning needs and offering expert support in a friendly atmosphere, sets us apart. Some of our members have even reached Division level in contests, and witnessing their growth is truly fulfilling.

Looking forward, the upcoming months will be dedicated to maintaining our achievements, training new members, and grooming the next set of leaders

It's a joy to witness our members working as a cohesive team daily, driving the club to greater heights. I have full faith in them, and I'm committed to doing my best to support their continued success

Navigating Success: Embracing Change in the Road Ahead

Dear Toastmasters of the Kaduwela Toastmasters Family,

As the Area Director of Area F2, it is my privilege to address the Kaduwela Toastmasters Club in the bi-annual newsletter Today, I am reminded of the wisdom encapsulated in the words of Helen Keller: "A bend in the road is not the end of the road… Unless you fail to make the turn."

As we reflect on the achievements and challenges of the past months, let us remember that setbacks and obstacles are not the end of our journey. They are merely opportunities for growth and learning It is how we respond to these bends in the road that defines our path forward

The Kaduwela Toastmasters Club has demonstrated time and again its resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to excellence. You have faced challenges head-on, overcome obstacles with determination, and celebrated numerous successes along the way However, the journey does not end here. In the face of change, whether it be in the form of new challenges, leadership transitions, or evolving club dynamics, let us remember the importance of unity and teamwork Together, you can navigate any bend in the road, overcome any obstacle, and emerge stronger and more resilient than before.

As you embark on the next phase of your Toastmasters journey, I encourage each member of Kaduwela Toastmasters Club to embrace change with an open heart and a fearless spirit. Let us approach each bend in the road as an opportunity for growth, learning, and personal transformation.

To the Executive Committee, I extend my deepest appreciation for your dedication, hard work, and leadership. Your tireless efforts have been instrumental in steering the club towards success, and I have no doubt that together, we will continue to achieve great things

A journey of almost five years by unlocking the potential to enrich lives of many with mesmerizing memories signifies the impact of Kaduwela Toastmasters Club and I would like to take this opportunity to share the legacy of this amazing club as an individual who have been a part of the club activities in the first two years The passion and perseverance of past and present leaders have been the cornerstone of the success of the club despite numerous challenges came across with COIVD-19 pandemic and subsequent recession in the country creating difficulties of holding meetings, retention of members and fulfilling the needs of members. However, the efforts and teamwork of the members have been instrumental in overcoming the prescribed challenges such that the club

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

has become one of the strongest clubs in the fraternity with current leadership of TM Thamali

The strong foundation laid with core values of toastmasters to deliver the club mission whilst raising the bar in terms of quality of the club proceedings, enhanced member engagement and recognitions, has provided framework for members to thrive as better communicators and leaders. For instance, winning multiple awards in recent area contest for international speech contest and table topics highlight the growth of the members in addition to constant involvement in beyond club activities. Therefore, I would like to appreciate the efforts of everyone behind the success of the club throughout whilst wishing you all the best for a fabulous future to shine lives of many.

‘This shall too pass’ A phrase that perfectly fits for the Kaduwela toastmasters club This phrase comes from a mentor of a king. The king was worried that when he achieved victories he overjoys and when he receives defeat he suffers too much. He wanted to embrace victory and defeat in a same manner and not to be overjoyed or too sorrowful. He asked his mentor to write in his sword The victory should rejoice calmly. Defeat should handle calmly. Instead, the vice mentor wrote ‘This shall too pass’ ( Buddhism narratives)

From its inception I have been there with the Kaduwela toastmasters club. Like every other toastmasters’ club Kaduwela had its own ups and downs We had been brothers and sisters from the beginning. Kaduwela managed to sail through in the calm sea as well as the stormy ones without sinking or breaking down Therefore, I’m always proud to say that kaduwela is my sibling club.

Before the beginning of the tenure the club president and immediate past president had a challenge to revive the club to its glory back. Today after 9 months club has succeeded. It is because of the positive mindset kaduwela EXCO had. That ‘ This shall too pass’. I was there with them when they were struggling and when they run smoothly , they embraced all in the same manner. Moreover, the EXCO manged to bring the club forward to take up roles beyond club level and shine I’m delighted to see the members winning beyond the club level.

The unity, members have, and the friendly environment created among the club culture has lifted the spirit of the club and its members I wish luck to keep that vibe throughout.

The EXCO this tenure did a wonderful job which is praiseworthy The learning and organizing of events were remarkable which were highlights of the tenure The more you keep up with the good culture club, will tend to grow And I wish the same to happen I have met good friends including the current president and immediate past president whom I can rely on Holding each other’s back something we practiced of the inception of our clubs There is no doubt that kaduwela and kadawatha will keep their bond throughout.

As a leader , I’m happy to see the growth club achieved and I always wish Luck and best things to come on the way of the Kaduwela toastmasters club.

Ah,childhood! The golden years when our biggest worry was that the ‘Bombai Motai’ cart would not come to our street before bedtime. I mean, seriously, who needs sleep when you can have ‘Bombai Motai’, right?

But let's talk about the magical moments of childhood, like believing that you could actually find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I remember sprinting after rainbows like a mini Usain Bolt, only to discover that my pot of gold was just a puddle at the end of the driveway

And speaking of gold, do you remember losing your first tooth? It was like hitting the jackpot! You'd wobble it around until it fell off, hoping the tooth will be in good enough condition for the tooth fairy to buy it. I mean, who knew teeth could be such a lucrative business?

Childhood was also the time when we believed in superheroes. I used to wear a towel as a cape and jump off the couch, convinced that I could fly My mom, on the other hand, was convinced that I'd break something And guess who was right? I’ll give you a hint: it wasn't me. Do you remember the nicknames we had at school? I remember we had an English teacher who always wore hair-gel and a Sinhala teacher who always had oil in her hair Hence the nicknames ‘Thela’&’Gella’. We had nicknames for other students too There was a kid in class who was always eating mutton. He was called ‘Eluwa’

BOMBAI MOTAI DREAMS

Then there were those classic family vacations, where the car ride felt longer than a Game of Thrones episode. We'd play the "Are we there yet?" game so often that I thought it was an actual destination. Apart from all these wonderful memories we had in our childhood, the ‘Bombai Motai’ stands out. Because, we don’t see them anymore and neither will our children.

Despite all the craziness in life, childhood was a time of boundless imagination and endless laughter

And as we grow older, let's not forget to sprinkle a little bit of that childhood magic into our lives because, after all, we could all use a rainbow-gold-hunting, tooth-fairybusiness-deals or a little superheroflying adventure now and then.

Imagine this:You're at a meeting, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Deadlines are looming, stress is mounting But wait – there's a simple solution right in front of you; DOODLING!

Yes, those little drawings in the margins aren't just random scribbles; they're your ticket to peace Doodling can be like a soothing balm for a busy mind. When life gets overwhelming, grabbing a pen and paper and doodling can work wonders It's not about drawing perfect pictures; it's about letting your thoughts flow freely onto the page. As you doodle, you'll find yourself letting go of stress and worries, getting lost in the moment

INK TALES

There are no right or wrong ways to doodle - just let your imagination take over In those squiggles and shapes, you'll discover a sense of peace and clarity that's hard to find elsewhere.

Doodling becomes your sanctuary, a place where creativity rules and criticism disappears So, in the swirl of lines and shapes, embrace the magic of doodle therapy. It's like a mini-vacation for your mind, where peace is just a doodle away

What is Artificial intelligence (AI) ?, How does it work and what can be used it for?

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is developing at high speed, transforming many aspects of modern life However, some experts fear it could be used for malicious purposes.

AI systems are trained on huge amounts of information and learn to identify the patterns in it, in order to carry out tasks such as having human-like conversation, or predicting a product an online shopper might buy.

What are AI programs like ChatGPT ?

ChatGPT is an example of what is called “generative” AI. These programs learn from vast quantities of data, such as online text and images, to generate new content which feels like it has been made by a human So-called “chatbots” – like ChatGPT –can have text conversations. Generative AIs can also make videos and even produce music in the style of famous musicians But these programs sometimes generate inaccurate answers and images, and can reproduce the bias contained in their source material, such as sexism or racism Many artists, writers and performers have warned that such AIs allow others to exploit and imitate their work without payment.

Why do critics fear AI could be dangerous?

Many experts are surprised by how quickly AI has developed, and fear its rapid growth could be dangerous. Some have even said AI research should be halted. Some experts even worry that in the future, super-intelligent AIs could make humans extinct. In May, the USbased Center for AI Safety is warning about this threat was backed by dozens of leading tech specialists.

Which jobs are at risk because of AI?

A report by investment bank Goldman Sachs suggested that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs across the globe It concluded many administrative, legal, architecture, and management roles could be affected The tech has already been used to help doctors spot breast cancers, and to develop new antibiotics

Testimonial Member‘s

It always seems impossible until it’s done.

There are moments in our lives when we see certain people performing roles and tasks as if they have been doing it all their lives We see them and think “I would never be able to do that”. As long as we think that way, we are right. Until… we get into those shoes and actually do it

Back in 2016 I was attending Ovation - the annual Toastmasters Conference of District 82 I observed in awe how confidently Toastmasters were speaking on stage. Especially the Contest Masters whose task was quite an important one because a slight mistake in front of a 500+ audience might be fatal in the overall outcome of the contest

While sitting back and enjoying the contest, I recall asking myself “would I ever be able to conduct a contest like this?” My answer at that time was “certainly not!”

In that same year, when I was attending the District Officer Training Program (DOTP) as an Area Director in June 2016, the training was mostly coordinated and hosted by the District Administration Manager at that time Distinguished Toastmaster Srianthie Salgado Being in the audience, I wondered what a critical and important responsibility it must be to be hold that position and manage everything to precision She communicated all the important information of the District throughout the year to the District Officers

Every word being said and especially every word being sent out in writing was important and decisive I remember asking myself whether I would ever have what it takes to hold that position and perform those duties

The answer to self at that time was “certainly not!”.

However, after being in the fraternity and gradually gaining confidence by engaging in various Toastmasters activities; club meetings, conferences, taking up opportunities whenever I could; I had the honor of performing both these roles. In 2019 I had the privilege of hosting the District Evaluation speech contest in front of an even larger audience comprising of both Sri Lankans and Indians What I saw the Administrative Manager do in 2016 at the DOTP and throughout the year? I did them and more in 2020/2021!! Based on the feedback I received at the time and still do; I humbly believe that I managed to do justice to the roles in my capacity

My intention in sharing these experiences is not to boast about myself but to let you know what a university this fraternity is. What is most beautiful is you sometimes do not realize you are gaining skills because you also get to enjoy what you do

The experience and skills I have gathered in my journey as a Toastmaster are so important to me. Important not only in my Toastmasters journey, but they have molded me to be successful in handling different types of situations personally and professionally as well.

The main learning in my decade-long journey in Toastmasters is that “it always seems impossible until it’s done” In 2016 I thought performing those roles were impossible In 2024 here I am having performed those roles to the best of my ability and moving forward exploring more oportunities All thanks to Toastmasters
