BUT, SUNDAY was a completely different story and the weather was great, the track was tacky and everyone had their game on, ready to race.

Mike and his crew were right on. Water only needed sparingly, no dust, groomed to perfection, this was exciting to see the track just in its ready state.

Alright folks I’m here with the winner, running 85 9-13, #75, riding on a Kawasaki out of Davison MI, its Chase Carrasco. Chase, dude, it’s been a couple days since I’ve spoken to you. You’ve had some great starts, you didn’t get the holeshot on that one but you worked hard, you pressed hard and kept it smooth. Dude, you’re doing some sweet little whips over the finish line over here. Starting to get a lot of style out there, looking a lot better. You’ve always been fast, but you’re starting to step it up to the next level.

Tell me, who’s this guy on your back over here? Gumby. And why’s there Gumby on your back? Uh, because of the brawl. What happened at the brawl? Well there was a big Gumby on the high dive and I thought it was funny. So you gave him a little bit of love and had him along for the ride at Freelin? Ya. Does he help you go farther? Ya. Well congratulations on a great day out here. Is there anybody you want to thank for helping get you out here to FreelinMX? Ya, I would like to thank God, and Rockys Great Outdoors and Amazing Deli. They sure have helped you out here today. You’ve got one more right buddy? Yep. Gonna get that win? Hopefully.

GREAT BATTLES

TO END THE SEASON at Baja MX BAJA ACRES (Millington, MI) | October 30 Story and photos by: Steve Baginski It’s hard to believe that the 2016 season is now complete. We headed to Baja for the final round on October 30th. It was there monster Mash weekend and the last race for the entire District 14 season as well. I was worried about the weather hurting our participants but we had 25 total entire. We had some rain before practice started and then a little drizzle throughout the day. Fortunately we had some breaks in the clouds and had a prett y good day of racing. The track looked great and the race action was close. The crew did an awesome job all the way around.

I was able to get four of our five classes all out in moto one for a packed gate. The Innovation, Evolution, Iron Man and Schoolboy racers were all out in the second drop.

Mike Mason led the way in Evo and taking the overall holeshot. Michael Sutherland was a close second and the Inno lead with Chad Morehouse just behind and on the inside. William Dale was right behind Chad with Eli Hovorka sweeping around the outside. Lance Shelton split the middle just ahead of Dean Howard, Ron Delaney, Bryan Hoeldtke and Tom Lee. Brad Bolzman was the first Iron Man while Robby Zimmerman was first Schoolboy. Rick Stone went wide followed by Greyson Laczko, Bill Belote and Mark Havalda. Steve Adema had a good jump out of the gate but another rider had come across and hit his front wheel sending him to the ground pretty hard. He would get up and enter the race but was off the pace and prett y sore. As they started lap two, Chad was

 Lance Shelton rode three total classes on Sunday, taking a third in Innovation and a second here in Transition out front as Bryan was up to second with Will gaining ground as he lead the Evo riders. Lance was screaming his 125 in third Inno as Michael slipped back to fourth.

Mike lost a few spots after the holeshot but was still on the gas as Dean was on his rear wheel. Ron and Robby were doing battle as Tom was trying to pull away from Eli. Brad was pulling away with the Iron lead as he was bar to bar with Dave.

Barnes was a few bike lengths behind and just ahead of Rick. Greyson and Mark were close as Bill was barely seen in his all camo bike and gear. At the start of lap three, Chad continued to lead as Will was now into second as he was still leading Evo as they put Steve a lap down. Bryan still held on to second Inno with a very small lead over Lance. Michael was on the gas running fourth while Mike and Dean were battling for second Evo. Robby was going strong leading SB just ahead of Ron and Eli as Tom and Derek where wheel to wheel.

Brad came by next pulling a lead in Iron as he battled with Barnes. Rick and Mark were also close as they were putting a little more ground on Bill. Part way through the white flag lap, Will came by in the overall lead as Chad was on his rear wheel.

Bryan still had a slight edge over Lance as they pulled away from the field. Michael was still charging as Mike was starting to

November 2016 – Michigan’s AMA/D14 Motorsports News 7 distance Dean. Ron had a good ride going in fourth as he was battling with Eli as they were both just ahead of Tom and Derek.

Barnes was next as he was in a moto long battle with Brad as they both pulled away from Mark. At the finish it was Will out front with the Evo win with Chad on his heels with the Inno win. Bryan and Lance battle all the way to the line with Bryan taking second with Lance in third. Michael rode strong to a fourth with Mike taking second Evo with Dean rounding out the Evo podium. Robby went on to the Schoolboy win as Greyson just went a lap down. Ron came by in fourth fighting with Eli in fifth Inno as Barnes took fifth Evo just ahead of Iron winner Brad. Tom had a good fight for sixth with Derek in seventh. Steve would get around slowly after his hard crash off the start but taking eighth. Mark struggled a little after he was forced to switch to his 125 just before the gate drop ending up in fifth. Rick was a few bike lengths behind taking second in Iron as Bill made his return on his camo RD. The gate dropped for moto two and it was Chad with a great jump and the holeshot. Michael was a very close second with Eli in third and Bryan fourth. Mike barely edged out Ron for the Evo holeshot

as Will and Lance were side by side. Tom was next as Robby, Derek and Brad were also side by side. Rick was next just ahead of Barnes, Mark and Greyson. Steve was missing from the start after he was pretty sore after his first moto crash. Chad was the first to come around to start lap two with Will up to second with Bryan a close third. Lance was on the gas and closing on Bryan as Michael was back to fourth.

Mike had moved into second Evo as he was battling with Robby once again. Ron was next and was staying right with the top group. Derek had a slight edge over Tom while Brad and Barnes continued their battle from the first moto. Mark came by next and just ahead of Eli as he had a slight tip over near the end of lap one. Rick was losing a little ground as he was a little ways in front of Bill. Lap three got under way with Chad still out front as Will was still closing the gap. Bryan and Lance continued to battle with Michael in a comfortable fourth. Mike still had a lead over Robby and Ron as Derek pulled a slight gap over Tom. Barnes came by just ahead of Brad as Eli was now getting back up to speed and making the pass on Rick.

NOVEMBER 2016 – by Steve Beane • The 2016 season is winding down, marked by the completion of the ISDE in Navarra, Spain. The American premiere squad did what it hadn’t been able to do in 91 previous runnings of the world’s most prestigious off-road race – Taylor Roberts, Kailub Russell, Michael Layne, and Thad Duvall captured gold!

• Taylor Roberts followed Ryan Sipes as the ISDE’s overall winner – the second American to capture the top spot. Kurt Caselli’s legacy is alive and well.

• The Junior Trophy team can be proud of their 2nd place finish – Trevor Bollinger, Grant Baylor, and Steward Baylor were only 45 seconds off of their Swedish rivals at the end of six days of racing. The US Women’s team – Tarah Geiger, Nicole Bradford, and Rachel Gutish – finished 4th.

• American club team riders Josh Toth and Ben Kelley (Trail Jesters, 2nd OA team) finished first place in the C1 and C2 divisions, respectively. The Eric Cleveland Memorial team finished 3rd OA. • The last major bike unveiling announcement – that of the 2017 Beta Race Editions – happened a week earlier than anticipated when an American rider found the photos and model descriptions on an Italian site. Look for details in another article in this paper.

• Cody Webb demonstrated why he’s sporting the #1 plate on his KTM by capturing the win at the Everett Washington round of the US EnduroX series. Points leader Colton Haaker placed second after surrendering the lead to Webb on the second lap. Both Webb and Haaker lapped third place finisher Ty Tremaine on the final lap! Two rounds – Idaho and Ontario, California remain on the schedule.

• The biggest news in the pro motocross world has to be the switch from Yamaha to Suzuki for the JGR team. Reports have the North Carolina squad contesting the 450 class with Justin Barcia and Weston Peick, while fielding a single rider Yoshimura-powered 250 effort on both the east and west coasts for supercross.

• After winning the outdoor nationals with Ken Roczen, it looks like RCH will be back on Suzukis minus their premiere rider and a major sponsor or two. Yoshimura Suzuki has folded up their tent (off-road anyway), choosing instead to support Suzuki’s 250cc development with the JGR team.

• If anyone has information on the whereabouts of James Stewart, please let us know. The one-time “Fastest man on the Planet” skipped the 2017 launch of the Seven gear brand he owns, as well as the RedBull Straight Rhythm event and the Monster Energy Cup. • It’s hard to complain about 60F weather as we head into the home stretch of enduro racing in District 14, even if the final rounds of the Family Enduro Series and the D14 Enduro series are held in Indiana and Ohio respectively.

• Michigan has roughly 3500 miles of trail – get out and enjoy it while you can! Just be aware that there are special hours of availability during the rifle season for deer hunting.

• Andrea Dovizioso became the 9th different MotoGP winner when he piloted his Ducati to the win at the recent Sepang race. Bryan had to stay focused to take second and second overall with Lance rounding out the podium. Michael had a great ride taking fourth and fourth overall. Derek had a lot better moto two taking fifth and fifth overall with his 7-5. Tom had some battles but was consistent with his 6-6 for sixth overall. Eli had a good ride going but his second moto cross rut and tip over cost him fifth overall as he dropped to seventh with his 5-7 moto scores. For the Evo riders, Will was on a mission and hard to hang with as he went 1-1 for the overall.

Mike had a good ride and even a holeshot taking second overall. Ron also rode great and took the third step on the podium with his 4-3 scores. Barnes had Brad pushing him the entire race to get him

Dean would drop back to seventh and he wasn’t feeling the best and went home early and didn’t make the start of moto two. Robby was able to have some battles with the other classes as he went on to another 1-1 in Schoolboy as Greyson also was able to battle with the other class taking second. Brad was on the move the entire day and went on to his 1-1 and the overall with Rick taking second.

The next class to hit the track were the Transition racers in the second drop of their moto. It was Gene Huntoon with the early lead followed by Ray Brooks, Lance Shelton and Derek Brooks. Chris Williams was on the outside as he had a slight lead over Brad Bolzman. As they started lap two, Chris was already out front and pulling away. Lance was up to second with Derek just ahead of Ray for third. Gene was back a few spots in fifth with Brad closing in sixth. As they came around to start lap three, it was Lance out front with a big lead. I couldn’t see it but near the beginning of the second lap, there was a big pile up after a flagger was hit and landed on the track. He was landed on and ran over many times and there were close to 10 bikes all piled together. Most of the Trans riders were caught up in the mess but fortunately not any injuries beyond some

R.I.P. Lanny Johnson submitted by Kaye Johnson, Road Congress

Lanny passed away September 23, 2016. He was a Veteran and was buried Friday the 21st of October in the National Great Lakes Veterans Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. The 35 motorcycles attending his ceremony was a mixture of the Patriot Guards and the Knights of the Road from Fowlerville. His three children rode their motorcycles in the parade. It was a beautiful showing of cycles, friends and family that Lanny would of been proud.

It's banquet time again and the ATV MX banquet is going to be a great one! As you know we are always looking for something fun to get us through the winter.

This year we planned a banquet to keep everyone busy for the weekend. I thought I would include some extra info that we can't get on the flyer for the 2016 ATV MX Banquet.

First of all the banquet itself will be held on Saturday, January 21st. It will be in Frankenmuth, MI at the super fun Frankenmuth Splash Village. The room for the banquet will open at 5:30 with supper at 6 PM. Supper will include a creamy cabbage salad, cottage cheese, a chicken and pasta salad, assorted dinner rolls, the famous Zehnder's Fried Chicken, bratwurst pieces in sauerkraut, meatballs in mushroom gravy, butter egg noodles, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh baked brownies, coffee, tea, milk or pop. There is a 6 story family raft ride, a 6 story super loop drop slide, an activity pool with water geysers, water basketball, water volleyball, the Action River, a Splash Landing area, two Dumping Buckets that dump gallons and gallons of water, a 4 story tube slide, Giggling Gorge, Perilous Plunge, Whimsical whirl hot tub and the Lazy River.

There is also an arcade with over 40 games and a 26' tree in the hotel lobby with a fireplace in the trunk.

There are Disney movies in the lobby every night for family viewing.

Sitting here in the wee hours of the morning, sipping coffee, and listening to the light patter of rain on the roof, always seems to make me reflect.

After spending the day with my motorcycle family on a nice, season ending trail ride, at the Lansing Motorcycle Club, Where approximately 100 riders were treated to 50 miles of trail, and a dinner at the end.

Food and drink flow and memories are made a by the warmth of the campfires on a chilly October night.

Tales of the past spring to life as the teller relives and the listeners get to get a glimpse into another’s soul. Passions are revealed and one’s own story emerges as the flames flicker and shadows dance on the faces of the circle.

These are our friends, our families, our past, and our future. All are represented. All are gathered around this fire tonight.

Of course, there is a lot of good-natured ribbing on each other, but no one gets upset and no one gets hurt, for we are all friends here, if even only we met tonight.

This is the nature of motorcycle racing, where people from all lifestyles gather together to enjoy the one thing they have in common. From the Business Executive to the Mechanic, we are all the same here around this fire.

So here I sit in the wee hours of the morning, listening to my wife peacefully sleep, thinking how truly blessed I am for having found a passion for motorcycle racing, which led me down this path of life, to this campfire, to all of you.

International Six Days of Enduro

October 11 - October 16 | story & photos submitted by Talon Soenksen Day 1: Unlike most people would think, I was not extremely nervous coming into the first day and I was more focused on getting it out of the way and over with.

The first transfer section I realized the extent of how dusty it was going to be and how fast the Euros ride 125s. The first cross test was prett y smooth the first time around but later in the week that would change. I made it up the gnarly hill in the Enduro test and was feeling good rounding out the first loop in the extreme test until I hit a big rock that I never saw and lost my front end in a fast sweeper. From then on I don't remember a whole lot about the second loops I just was glad to get it over with. It did get better after puking after 30 miles of transfer.

Day 2: I was looking for a fresh start this day and after loop one I was moving up in the standings and feeling good aside from a mild headache. I was feeling good

in loop two and was ready to put in another solid time in the cross test but about a quarter of the way in I bottomed in a rut and caught my foot on the side twisting it all the way I around. Once I got going again I was trying to make time up but crashed once more and had a hard time climbing up to the bike. Thankfully I finished the last test smooth and got both tires changed in the first bit of rain we would see during the week.

Day 3: Finally we would see fresh trails and tests. The first loop was really foggy and riding along the mountain tops to the first test was sketchy and extremely slick.

Think hard packed clay now with rain on it. I really enjoyed the new Enduro test and rode fairly smooth and consistent all day even though I couldn't put my left foot down in any of the corners. My new goal for the rest of the week was to not hurt myself any more and obviously to finish.

This day I actually did a good job of reaching that goal and was feeling better after the half way point.

Day 4: Starting the day we had more rain but I was getting more and more used to the super slippery terrain. The first cross test was insanely slick on the side of the mountain and I had a hard time adjusting to sliding around the corners and had a little tip over on some logs at the end but the first loop was relatively easy except for some tough transfer trail like usual.

Loop two was totally different though.

The Enduro test was awesome and the cross test was like Velcro. I was timid at first but once I realized it was a whole different animal I started pushing a little more. I finished out the day safe and well.

Day 5: This was the last long day of trail that we had to ride and it was a super long loop that we only had to do once. We started

the day off cold with about a 20 mile road ride in the early morning but my Fly Racing coat kept me warm until the stubborn sun decided to do it's job. We had one all new test and I was so glad to ride smooth trail again. Then we rerode two of the other tests we had ridden previously in the week.

I was so glad to finish the extreme test for the 10th time during the week and I hope to never see that test again. I was so happy to finish out the first five days strong and knew If I didn't absolutely wad myself up I was going to finish my first six days the next day.

Day 6: The motocross test wasn't much of a moto track. They had about one double and three rollers. We started in the gravel runoff of the car circuit we were at. After running through the bunker we hopped onto the pavement for a few corners then went back into the gravel and up onto the track we would ride on for the remaining 8

scrapes and bruises. So Derek was up to second with Ray running third. Chris was back going and in fourth as Gene and Bard took a while to get going after the crash in fifth and sixth. When they came around on the white flag lap, Lance was still out front with Derek still in second. Chris was up to third and closing fast on Derek with Ray back to fourth. Gene came by in fifth but a little off pace as his bike was stuck in third after his shifter was broken off in the crash. Brad took long enough to get going that he was towards the back and would get lapped by the first drop.

When the gate fell for moto two, it was Gene with a half wheel lead over Chris going across the holeshot line. Lance came by in third just ahead of Derek and Ray. Brad only made it half way down the start before stalling. It would take him a few kicks to get going but would enter the race back in sixth. By the mid way point in lap two, Chris was out front and pulling away.

Lance was up to second with Gen back to third. Derek was riding strong in fourth as he had just made the pass on Ray. Brad had made up some ground on the pack but still held sixth. Half way through lap three, Chris had opened a nice lead with Lance till in second. Derek was now up to third as Gene was once again having some shifting problems now back to fourth. Ray was closing on Gene as well with Brad still gaining. With the white flag out and the

riders closing in on the finish, it was Chris out front as he would go on to win and taking the overall with his 2-1 scores. Lance pushed all the way to the finish but would end up second with his 1-2 finishes. Derek came by my in third but only 50’ past me he would make a mistake and hit the dirt.

Gene was close enough to take advantage and go on to take third and third overall.

Ray was right behind Gene but would stop to check on Derek and that would allow Brad to get by as well. So Brad would go on to take fourth in the moto but his sixth in moto one dropped him back to sixth overall. Ray took off after checking on Derek to take fifth for fourth overall.

Derek eventually got back on the bike to cross in sixth for fifth overall.

The season is now complete and with all of the racers, this was the most successful season to date. I have completed my seventh season as Chairman and this year we had the most entries and will be giving out the most awards. I want to thank everyone for coming out to a race this year and I hope to see everyone at the Banquet.

This year it is in Perry at the address is listed on the flyer in the paper. The points have been updated and the final results had some very close positions.

laps. I surprisingly got an awesome start even though I couldn't read the 30 second board but I came into the first corner second and was looking to pass for the lead when I hit the gravel and slid out. I didn't fully crash so I only lost about 12 spots but it was apparent when I hopped onto the dirt that they had watered the track like crazy. Battling through the pack was crazy and my bike was extremely heavy with all the sticky mud on it. Thankfully I had my Scott roll-offs so I had clear vision forward to where I wanted to be. I think I made it up to around 5th and I was beyond happy to have made it through the week.

This was my first ISDE and hopefully not my last. It was great to see the US Trophy team win the overall for the first time and Taylor Roberts the top individual. Personally I climbed from 250 the first day to 210 by end of the week out of over 600 racers and 36 out of 133 C1 racers. Our C1 team came in 18 out of 113 teams. It was a definite learning experience and all the tips and help prior to it from everybody was greatly appreciated. I can't thank my parents and everyone enough for all their support and getting me over there. In future years I'll know what to practice before and hopefully I can improve, which is everyone's goal in racing. The Yamaha YZ250FX with Factory Connection suspension performed great needing nothing but air filter changes and 2 oil changes.

Wasn’t the end of October stunningly beautiful? It was so lovely to trick-or-treat without multiple layers or needing to be in a car!

Here are a couple of my favorite moto costumes. We hope you and your family made some fun Halloween memories too!

The middle of the month was a stark contrast to the beauty of the end. October 16th was a rainy, stormy, dark day. Tracks all over the area cancelled their events and their races. One track stood out from the crowd: Portland Trail Riders. After an hour delay, due to lightning, the last PTR Hare Scramble of 2016 was on! The elected board knows how dedicated hare scramble riders are to their sport, and it would take more than a little rain to cancel this well-attended event.

 Hey! Who invited RONNIE MAC to the party? You never know when the king of all goon-riders is going to show up. By the way, has anyone seen Jake Juett around? I can't seem to find him anywhere!

Well, that's one way to get to all the neighborhood houses in a hurry! MotoGirl, (aka my daughter, Savannah Powers, little sister to Max) had the idea to follow in her brother's footsteps and don some gear of her own. She says riding beats walking any day, and she has all the candy to prove it.

The people who show up and race hare scrambles are a unique breed. The word tough is thrown around a lot, but more accurate words might include rugged, resilient, and uncompromising. These voracious competitors showed up ready to race in less-than-favorable conditions. It is quite awe-inspiring to watch these men and women push their machines and themselves beyond normal limits to finish a race. We would like to extend our deepest congratulations to everyone who was able to complete the course. You are inspiring to riders of all kinds, and we look very forward to seeing what you can accomplish next year. The top three finishers in each class deserve to be highlighted.

Overall 3-hour and Expert M champion was Colin Cook who finished in 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 39 seconds. Shane Spangler followed him, and then Andrew Bennett. That’s an amazing finish time even without all the water hazards!

Overall Team winners were Team H (Warner and Huovinen) in 2:21:52, followed by Team A

(Densmore and Sears) and Team B (Hasbrouck and Fry.)

Overall 2-hour, Expert-E, winner was Paul Kelley with more than half an hour to spare at 1:27:02 followed by Chase Cain and Jeremy Zajac.

Overall Minis champ was Ryan Harms with a time of just over 43 minutes. Jason Sandberg was next, followed by the incredible Olivia Gallt. Olivia was the Women AM<19”-T winner at 44 minutes and 21 seconds. Great job!

Open A 3-hour-A was won by Tyler Tanis, 2:17:43 with Paul Azar a mere 5 minutes behind.

Vet A 30+ V is for victor! Congrats to Thomas Coughlin who finished in 2:21:03. Nice!

Open B 3-hour B saw Mike Veach cross the line first in 2:24:10. Joshua Gloria and Gerard Bartys, Jr. weren’t too far behind.

Vet B 30+F champion was Dean Matthews in 2:15:51, chased in by Robert Root and Sami Minkkinen.

Team A-H leaders were Team H (Warner and

Senior 50+-S is for superstar Douglas Amato after completing the course in 2 hours, 18 and a half minutes. Impressive!

Open B, 2-hour-Z winner was George Kennedy in 1:34:49, followed by Luke Mapes and Tracy Hall. Great racing!

C Junior, 13-20yrs-X was won by Carson Nye in 1:27:19. Peter Fila and Andrew Spangler were prett y close behind.

C Vet, 21+-R congrats go to Michael Illig at 1:28:50, followed by Jean LaVellee and Toby Baker.

Super Senior, 50+SS winner was Kim Mahncke at 1:26:39. John Cain and James Cain were right behind.

Mini 80-105cc, 12-15yr-W congratulations go to Ryan Harms at 43:05 followed by Jason Sanderg and Blake Cain.

Mini 66-85cc, 12-15yr-J winner was Eli Sandberg who finished in almost exactly 59 minutes. That’s quite a feat on a smaller bike. Great work!

Mini 0-65cc, 7-11yr-P champ was Bode Meylan in just under 45 minutes, followed by Brenden Galinis and Gavin Tokarczyk.

Trail N was won by Alex Rust in 1:06:05 with Nicholas Kline only 4 minutes behind.

ENDURO REPORT Getting Started in Enduro Racing

“For the most part, I didn’t have any idea what I was doing when I lined up for my first enduro,” says Gary, who decided to try the national enduros when he was just 13 years old. “My younger brother, Neil, and I were looking for something different. Our dad used to ride traditional timekeeping enduros, so we decided to give enduros a try. It wasn’t that hard to transition into.”

The Enman brothers say their parents are their pit crew, but their dad hopes to ride with them in the future. On occasion, the boys get to ride on the same row, and that adds to the camaraderie-building experience.

“The enduros have a great community vibe,” Neil says. “It’s like being part of a huge family. Someone is always there to help when you need it.”

While racing is the main focus of the weekend, the Enman brothers say they enjoy camping, hanging out with their race friends and checking out the terrain.

They also try to experience something local to the race location, whether it’s seeing a national landmark or eating at a local restaurant.

“If you’re someone wondering if you should try enduros, I say just go for it,” Gary says. “It’s nice to go out and race all day, but be able to take breaks and reset your mind. For me, it’s been really fun to ride.”

Format Basics They date back to the 1920s. Early enduros were road courses. A typical modern enduro is mostly woods. The 75- to 150-mile competitions consist mainly of single-track trail where racers ride from checkpoint to checkpoint, ultimately returning to the start.

Riders leave in small groups of three to

five. These groups, also referred to as “rows” or “minutes,” typically start at 10 a.m. and every minute thereafter until everyone has entered the woods. Because of the desire to limit the number of riders in each group and to make sure everyone can finish by a reasonable time, enduros cap the number of groups and riders they can accommodate.

Because riders can’t burn a check, they simply ride as fast as they can. Transfer sections route the racers from the end of one timed section to the start of another.

If riders arrive early at the start of a section, they just wait to enter until the check workers indicate it’s time for their row to leave, usually with a flip board that displays the current minute.

Each rider is individually scored based on when his or her row is scheduled to arrive at each checkpoint. Rows usually include riders competing in different classes, allowing friends to ride together. For example, a single row might include a dad racing the 40B class, his son racing the 200A class, and a friend competing in the Open A class.

For most riders, the start-control/restart format is the most accessible, particularly in cases where bikes aren’t required to be street legal. “Even with the computer mounted on my bike, I burn checks because I ride too quickly,” says Zach Klamfoth, a rider who competes in the Appalachian Championship Enduro Series as well as national enduros. “The start-control/ restart format takes the thinking out of it.”

Each rider will be assigned a number that reflects the row, or minute, the rider is on.

So, riders on row 20 might be given numbers 120, 220, 320 and 420—or perhaps 20A, 20B, 20C and 20D. There are two broad types of enduros most popular today: traditional timekeeping enduros and start-control/restart enduros.

Start Control/Restart Start control/restart enduros have grown in popularity. In 2007, the AMA National Enduro Championship Series switched to this format. Simply put, this format doesn’t penalize a rider for arriving early at a check. Riders are checked in and out at points along the course, and all competition takes place in closed-course sections.

The start control format also makes scoring simpler. The nationals use transponders so no manual scoring is required.

“Under the traditional time-keeping format, the series got 200 to 300 riders,” says Alan Randt, who runs the National Enduro Promotions Group, which contracts with the AMA to promote the national series.

“Now, we get anywhere from 500 to 600 riders.”

Traditional Time-Keeping For decades, traditional time-keeping enduros were the most popular. Some enduro series still operate this way. Traditional enduros often use public roads to route riders to different sections of the course. This requires the rider to have a

Riders equip their bikes with a route sheet holder, scorecard holder and odometer.

They also need a way to track their time, such as a wristwatch or an enduro computer.

The route sheet lists key turns on the course and the correct time and mileage for arrival. The arrival time is based on a required average pace, typically 24 mph.

The scorecard is used as a backup for, or in place of, electronic scoring. It mounts on the front fender. Check workers record each rider’s official arrival time at the checkpoints on the scorecard.

at the first turn 4 minutes and 33 seconds after starting the enduro.

Regardless of the rider’s row or minute, the wristwatch or computer should be set so that it will tick over to 10 a.m. when the rider starts the enduro. Then, the rider simply compares the time on the watch to the time on the route sheet to know if he or she is early or late. Most clubs also mark the course with arrows and post signs that state when a rider should have arrived at that intersection.

The rider’s goal is to check into and out of each section as close to the assigned minute as possible. Riders who arrive at a checkpoint when they aren’t supposed to are considered “off their minute.” A rider who shows up early is said to have “burned” that check.

Riders receive penalty points for arriving too early or too late at a checkpoint. One penalty point is assigned for each minute a rider arrives late. Two penalty points are assigned if a rider burns a check by one minute. For each additional minute a rider arrives early, five penalty points are assigned.

The route sheet lists a lot of information.

The first row of a route sheet might read: 1R | 1.82 | 10:04:33. This tells the rider that the first turn is right, that the correct mileage at the turn is 1.82, and that the rider should arrive there at 10:04:33.

The listed arrival time is calculated from a start time, or “key time,” of 10 a.m. In this case, it means the rider should arrive

Regular checks are scored by the minute.

So-called “emergency checks” are scored based on the second, counted from the minute the rider was due to arrive. For example, a rider due on minute 20 who comes in at 21:30 receives a score of 90 seconds for the emergency check, not one point.

Italian Beauty The latest 2017 Off-Road Bikes from Beta and TM Racing

It has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there is no denying the visual presence of latest offerings from both Beta and TM. Beauty is more than skin deep however – let’s look at what’s new for the strongest challengers to the orange juggernaut.

Beta Race Editions Announced just November 3rd, the 2017 Race Edition line-up has grown by the addition of a 390cc 4T and added a number of refinements over previous year bikes. Beta is quick to point out that Steve Holcombe is the World Enduro E3 champ on their 300RE. Wheels have changed from Giant to Excel, the Sachs closed chamber forks have revised valving, fluids, and length, and rear sprockets are now red-anodized tri-metal Supersprox rings. Additionally, the 250 and 300 2Ts will be delivered “oil-injection-ready”, meaning that the carburetor, cdi, and subframe are shared with the RRs so that the riders can easily add oil-injection if they so choose.

TM’s brand-new 300 4T racer New for 2017 is the 300Fi 4T racer. Basically an upsized version of Remes’ 250cc world championship bike, the 300 features a straight down-draft intake from the front-mounted airbox, with the fuel tank under the seat.

Like all TMs, the bike features Excel wheels, KYB forks, a TM Racing-built shock, and the most gorgeous welds on the aluminum frame you’ve ever seen.

 Beta’s stellar 2T Race Edition TM Racing It wouldn’t be wrong to think that TM is fighting way above their weight. The 40 year old company is less than 1/100th the size of KTM, but they produce a full line of moto, enduro, and supermoto bikes that race and win at the highest levels on the world stage.

Because the team races bikes almost straight off the production floor, the bike that Eero Remes rode to the World Enduro E1 title is a virtual clone to the bike that you can ride.

The most fun you’ll have in the woods The two-stroke lineup has not been neglected, even though the chassis on both the small (125 and 144) and large (250 and 300) were thoroughly updated in 2016. The frames again are updated, being lighter overall and narrower at the riders’ ankles. Most of the further changes are unseen, with new cylinder porting and linings, new cables and spools on the electronically actuated power valves (250/300), and new suspension settings.

It’s hard to believe that it was Bulldogs last race of the season already on us, but here we are! Maybe it was the very late spring, maybe the HOT weather we had this summer, but this race season flew by and before we knew it Red Bud Pro National was here, then it seemed like the leaves started turning. Michigan D-14 MX racers always wish our race season was “just a couple of weeks longer”. Oh well, at least we have Monster Energy Cup coming up and the Supercross season is right around the corner…..

Bulldogs M/C had its (MONEY MOTO) at the October 9th race day along with the State Championship round of the D-14 race series. What a nice turn out for the Club, with 326 riders showing up on race day. A steady stream of people were at the entrance trying to get “The Good parking spots”. Thank you to all the riders and the families of the riders that showed up to carve some lines in the sand and watch their riders.

Twenty-two racers signed up for the afternoon Money Moto, with #165 Yamaha rider Matt Klann taking the $100 holeshot award followed closely by, Trenton Beyer, Jerry Lorenz and Michael Bidus, and the rest of the pack hot on their heels. As the race started to settle in #881 Lorenz made a move to get around Klann and gapped him a bit with, Beyer, Bidus, Gundlach, and Braun all within a couple of seconds of each other. Klann and Bidus had a pretty good battle for a few laps, until Bidus decided to make a move for second right at the slow down “Scoring HUMP” right before the Finish Line. Well, 2 Yamahas don’t fit into the same spot! Advantage...Bidus. So now it’s Lorenz in 1st, Bidus in 2nd and Klann in 3rd for a couple of laps. Not sure if he had a tip over or stalled, but Klann must have had an issue because a few laps later he was back in 5th. Hang on a second…..#754 Honda mounted Trevor Gundlach was quietly lurking in the hunt was now in 3rd place riding a very fast but consistant pace.

4th place Honda rider Hunter Braun gave chase, but Gundlach kept the gap the same throughout the closing laps. 20 min plus 2 laps is a pretty tall order at Bulldogs, that track got ROUGH and just finishing the race is something to be proud of, let alone ride another moto in the afternoon class! The finishing top five were, Lorenz, Bidus, Gundlach, Braun, and Holeshot winner Klann finished fifth. Great job to all the riders who signed up to tackle that moto.

Because of penalty for arriving early, traditional enduros aren’t a flat-out race.

Although many sections are difficult and only the best riders are at risk of burning them, easy sections and checks in unexpected locations can catch riders who are riding too fast. Many riders prefer traditional enduros becaue they reward experience and mindfulness, as well as speed.

Although traditional time-keeping enduros have a reputation among new enduro riders as tricky or difficult, they are fairly simple. Riders will know whether they are riding in an easy section (where they’re at risk of going faster than the average) or in a difficult section (where they can ride as fast as they can and still not burn the out-check).

Thanks to the enduro format, a new rider likely will be on a row with an experienced enduro rider. Because this rider is most likely in a different class, they’ll almost certainly be willing to help the newcomer.

during breaks. Maybe that’s the draw of enduros. Maybe it’s the challenging tightwoods trail—a reason you should have hand guards mounted on your bike. Maybe it’s the great family atmosphere. FLESZAR GAZETTE

Hello Ladies and Gents – I will get right to the HareScramble racing news. On September 18, we went back to Valley Trail Riders. The club was celebrating a 50 year Anniversary on being a club. That is a long time - the average house cost about the same as one of those crazy expensive KTM450SX special edition. The track this time was very fast. Nearby resident, Luke Mapes was well rested and took the 2hr Open B Class. Followed by George Kennedy and Tracy Hall. Joe McNeil was driving the last nail in the coffin by winning the 3hr overall and prett y much sealing his Championship up for 2016 in 3hr M and 3hr overall.

October 2, we headed south to Plymouth, Indiana and once again it rained. Not as much as the spring race, but still…. Taking Open A 3hr was Brandon Guaresimo over Tyler Tanis and Paul Azar. In our morning program of minis, Brenden Galinis finished ahead of Bode Meylan and Ty Denny in our 65cc P class. Turn out was not the greatest and I’m thinking it’s a long drive for everyone. The track is a really good place to race with a good mixture of woods and fields.

Our last race on October 16, was at Portland. To put it into short terms, we had ourselves a mudder. The minis were delayed a solid hour due to lightening in the area. The decision was made to shorten the minis to 45 minutes, 2hrs would go 1 ½ hours and 3hrs down to 2 ¼ hours. Not the best to settle championships but kinda fitting.

My opinion is that over the 12 race series the racers endured snow, heat, humidity, dust, rain, mud, rocks, falling trees, a grumpy chairman, fast speeds, slow speeds, jumps and bumps. All this and you came up on top or just finished every single race, your one bad Hombre.

I will cover Election results in the next issue. On a personal note, THANK YOU for coming out and making this D14 HareScramble series great. I hope to see the series grow and get even better. Thanks again and remember, keep your sound down and join a club!
