ORVs return to Trek the Mighty Mac in 2016 Another huge turn-out anticipated for October bridge ride.

After a history-making 1,340 off-road vehicles (ORVs) crossed the Mackinac Bridge in October of 2015, it’s no surprise that organizers are excited and ready to announce this year’s date of October 1, 2016 for the return event.

ATVs, side-by-sides, and off-road motorcycles are once again invited to participate in this one-of-a-kind parade for a nominal registration fee that includes a lunch and other perks.

Janet Peterson, Executive Director of the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce, said the massive turn-out to the inaugural event was special in more ways than one.

“We are told that the 2015 event had the largest number of entries for any ORV event in Michigan history,” she explained, adding that ORV clubs across the state have vowed to see those numbers double this year. It was also the first time ATVs had been allowed to cross the bridge.

Registration is already up and running and riders have already begun signing up for the fall event. The ride was the brain child of John Chad, an advocate for those who enjoy riding ATVs. While his death meant Chad didn’t get to experience the event, he is credited for planting the seed to start this new tradition.

More than just a Mackinac Bridge crossing, there are a number of activities planned for the weekend. Participants are able to park their SxS or ATV after the ride and enjoy the free shuttle provided by the St. Ignace Events Committee for the remainder of the weekend. Special awards are given in a variety of categories and 2015 participants say the camaraderie only added to the fun.

The official start to the crossing will begin at 10am, with lunch served afterward from 11am-2pm and a beer tent with live music from 11am - 6pm. Awards and prizes will be doled out at 5pm. All postcrossing events will occur at the Little Bear East Arena.

the state of the district

After my first year as District 14 President, I find that being the leader of a large motorcycling organization is very humbling.

With the Board of Directors and the Divisional Chair people that we have in place, I find that my position is more symbolic then actually one of necessity.

My position to me is more of guidance and direction then having to lead.

The true leaders of the district are the volunteers that run the Divisions, the Treasurer and Secretary that run the day-to-day operations.

We are still a member driven organization and the combination of our outstanding Organizers and Promoters working in conjunction with our riders and the district to put together a schedule of events that provides an opportunity for riding almost every weekend throughout the year.

We could not do this without the passion for the sport, from the people in our District, whether it be to organize, schedule, layout, or just ride an event, it takes each and everyone of you!

I truly believe that we still must learn to sell our product better, both on the District and on the AMA level. We have a great product to sell, but still strive for marketing ideas to get our message out to other’s that may still be on the fence to join us in one capacity or another.

Our number of members remains consistent with a small growth rate. We as a district seem to be losing youth rider’s in several of our division’s, with the exception of Motocross which seems to be remaining level, this is a trend we need to address and find a solution for as our existence depends on the continuous influx of youth riders to ensure our future.

As a District we have branched out beyond our boundaries by becoming part of other community programs, we were part of the first ever O.R.V. crossing of the Mackinaw Bridge.

The District takes part and leads the State in Legislation for Off Road riding and has had impact on Political education and elections.

The District provides forest clean up and tree plantings with the States Department of Natural Resources, true conservation from the grassroots level.

My goal as I hope is yours is to continue to push the District forward into the next level and the future.

(Freelin MX, Brown City, MI) Well, a lot of just got hit with 7-10” of the white stuff. Now, it’s supposed to be 50 degrees in 2 days so hopefully Spring is just around the corner. Is your bike ready? Are you? Have you been keeping fit all Winter long? It’s only 22 days until we open (March 20). Hope it starts to get warmer, all the white mess melts, and we get some drying winds! We’ve all lived in Michigan long enough to know that the weather does change and that after Winter comes Spring and then Summer. Sometimes it just doesn’t feel like it’s soon enough!

Team Freelin looks forward to another great year in 2016. We have 6 race weekends planned, one of which includes ATVs as part of the ATV Michigan State Championship series (May 7/8). For that ATV State Championship series race, BOTH days (Saturday & Sunday) will count towards your series points. So plan on coming out to race the entire weekend. It’s our opening weekend, part of the District 14 Motocross Championship season racing and hats off to Mother’s Day as well. The bikes should be dialed and ready to roll.

 Freelin Family Fun

We run a split program so some of you start early, race in the morning, and your races should be done by about 1pm-ish. Our afternoon program usually starts up by 2pm so some of you will get to sleep in and will spend the afternoon with us. If you’re spending the weekend with us you get to see it all. We run ALL D14 MX bike classes, plus a few of our own FreelinMX classes. You can check out our entire bike class structure on

Q: What's your favorite track?

Doug: Back in the mid 80's it was Croswell half mile for sure. It was so fun!

Now it's Lucky Thumb, they have put so much time and money into their facility. On Fridays we can not wait to get there!

Q: How did you get into racing?

Doug: A friend, Rick Levette and his family raced. We started going with them and was hooked. Unfortunately, we lost Rick in a racing accident at Caro in 1984. We still are friends with Paul and Donna today. Cindy and I named our son after Rick.

Q: What's your favorite thing about spending your weekends at the races?

Doug: All the laughs afterwards, I enjoy all the old racing stories.

Q: Favorite racer of all time?

Doug: There's a lot! Anybody riding a Kawasaki. Loved to watch Brian Harden and Charlie Bowles ride. I would probably have to say Mike Stauffer. He paid for everything out of his own pocket, not much for spares and could ride the hell out of a bike.

Q: How long have you been racing?

Doug: I started racing in 1979. Quit a few times, guess I can't stay away.

Q: What is the best memory you have from the races?

Doug: Spending time with several families from the Croswell/ Peck area for many years. We still laugh about those times.

Q: Other than racing what do you do in your free time?

Doug: Aside form racing we camp a lot with friends and family. We usually are gone every weekend.

Q: What is the best thing a promoter can do?

Doug: Prep the track. It makes for exciting safe racing and keeps stands full.

Q: What would life be like for you if you never started racing?

Doug: There is life without racing motorcycles?

Q: Any sponsors you'd like to thank?

Doug: My wife Cindy for understanding why I like to ride and my kids Richard and Alicia for their interest and support. The Vanconant family! They are the best! Thanks to Stauffer Motors and Grace Performance, every little bit helps.

Report shall include date and type of event, results of each class and number of riders, and check or money order for point’s fund. Points fund check shall be calculated on a per rider basis as described below: Rider Points fund: Four dollars ($4.00) per rider, per class.

General Rules: 1. The following are supplemental to, or

part of, the AMA/ATVA Rules and Guidelines. All other rules and guidelines applicable to the event shall be derived from the AMA/ATVA rulebook / guidelines and AMA/ATVA rules supersede in the case of conflict.

2. A rules committee shall be composed of the ATV Chairman, ATV Congressman, and rider representatives. The ATV Chairman will break all tie votes. Rule changes and additions may be submitted, in writing for consideration at any time during the year, but if adopted will not take effect until the following season.

3. Rider representatives will be appointed at annual sanctioning meeting. They will be required to represent the riders, and will work with chairman to advance all phases of the sport.

ATV Specifications: 1. Per ATVA Guidelines - All ATV's shall be fitted with a tether type engine kill switch.

2. Number plates and backgrounds should be white or black contrasting combination. Number plates for event scoring are required on the front and rear of the ATV. (Note, the promoter is not responsible for miss-scoring when the numbers are difficult to read, it is the rider’s responsibil-

ity to ensure that the numbers are easily readable at a fair distance, see AMA/ATVA rule book.) Below are commonly accepted ways to number your ATV: FRONT: White background / Black numbers 8" high REAR: White background / Black numbers 8" high, mounted to rear grab bar or riders back. Numbers also highly recommend on rear fender deck and riders back also. CROSS COUNTRY: CC (Hare Scrambles) riders are required to post class letter designation on number plate, and back of helmet. Riders will be sold / rented a transponder card that shall be mounted / taped to the underside of the helmets visor.

ATV Scoring: 1. Riders shall earn full points on any race day that is the only points paying event in the district on that day even if they are the sole rider in the class. On a day when two (2) separate tracks are paying points within the district, a full class constitutes having a minimum of 2 riders and is required to earn full points. If less than 2 riders are signed up in a given class on a day when 2 separate tracks are paying district points, ½ points will be awarded for a finishing position 2. On the date of a nationally sanctioned ATV event held within District 14, that

event will be the sole points paying event for that discipline in the District for ATV’s on that day.

3. Championship awards will be presented at end of season or series, and points fund will be distributed until fund is spent in full on above-mentioned awards. The number of awards given will be based on participation in class.

4. In the event that a race is dubbed “double points”, the points will count as 2 separate race finishes instead of 2 times the total points possible. Example: If a rider wins a “double point’s event”, he/she will be awarded 2 race results worth 25 points each (25+25) 5.

All riders must go through the scoring chute in 1st gear!

The scoring area is a no passing zone.

ATV Points Scoring: All events scheduled for points will be accumulated towards division championships and year-end awards. See the points schedule below: FINISH CROSS COUNTRY (XC) Points 1-30; 2-25; 3-21; 4-18; 5-16; 6-14; 7-13; 8-12; 9-11; 10-10; 11-9; 12-8; 13-7; 14-6; 15-5; 16-4; 17-3; 18-2; 19-1; 20-0.

General Information: 1. All Cross Country (XC) races will be dead

2. Start Procedure. Riders shall line up in their assigned starting row on a first come basis.

3. A riders meeting will be held at the starting line, or scoring, before the race. All riders are responsible for attending.

4. The starter will give a 10 second signal before the start of the race. Between 8 and 10 seconds the green flag will be thrown, signaling the start.

5. Riders starting their machines prior to the green flag signal, or taking off with the wrong row, will be penalized.

6. Club members not able to race an event due to club work obligations may be allowed to use one less than the required 80% score, and will receive a score for the event based upon the rider’s average for the season. This averaged score will apply to only one race per season, and will be used to complete the rider’s total class and overall division points. Notice must be given to the ATV Chairman or points keeper 60 days prior to event.

7. Numbers 1 - 10 are reserved for the previous season’s top 10 overall finishers and are not to be used unless earned. If 1 - 10 are on the Quad, they must be covered or taped over.

On track regulations: 1. Riders must remain on the marked course; the marked course is within 25 feet of race arrows. However, riders must stay within the confines of the following markers: Double arrows posted on both sides of the trail, Ribbons, Signs, Stakes, Hay bales, Barrels, Motocross track etc…

2. Riders encountering a traffic jam or “bottle neck” may go more than 25 feet off the course to get around the bottle neck only! However, the rider must re-enter the course as soon as possible, and upon approaching this section the next lap, must ride the original arrowed section if the track is clear. If the original marking devices are knocked down, the rider must stay on the original marked course regardless.

3. If a rider leaves the course for any reason, they must re-enter where they left.

4. Reckless riding. No rider may ride in such a manner as to endanger life or limb of other riders, officials or the public. Riders will be penalized for the reckless operation of their machine, including but not limited to the deliberate ramming, blocking or intentional contact with another rider, or the running into of an official.

5. Penalties will be assessed at the discretion of the Chairman and Rider reps based on the severity of the offense, and may include one or more of the following: position(s), lap(s), time adjustment, disqualification, suspension or loss of champi-

onship points.

SPORTSMAN/Utility Class (“S”) qualifications: This class was designed for the riders of 2 or 4 wheel drive quads with either an automatic clutch or transmission. Depending on rider turnout, some classes may be combined into the same starting row for the start of the race. That decision will be announced at the riders meeting.

Mini-quad classes: IF a track is able to run mini-quads the day of the scheduled race, the classes will be as such; Class Age, Requirement, Engine Size, Engine Type: 50 cc – 4 to 8 yrs; 0cc to 50cc; 2 or 4 stroke 70cc– 6 to 11 yrs; 51cc to 70cc; 2 or 4 stroke *90cc–8 to 12 yrs; 71cc to 90cc; 2 stroke *90cc–8 to 12 yrs; 100cc to 125cc; 4 stroke ATV Cross Country Scoring: 1. 4. No other Cross-Country points paying events may be scheduled on same day within D-14. 80% of the scheduled number of races in the series will count toward series championship, with a minimum of six events. Remaining scores will not be counted (throw away).

5. All classes will receive 1 throw away with the exception of the Advanced / “A” class.

Advanced/A class will receive no throwaways. The exception to this rule being workers at club events who will receive the average of their scores.

6. In the event of a tie in year end points for the Cross Country Series, the tie breaker will be based on the 2 rider’s last head-tohead match-up. The rider finishing in front of the other rider will break the tie and assume the higher position.

7. A rider must attend a minimum of 51% of the race dates in a particular class to be considered eligible for Series Awards.

8. In the event that a rider gets DQ’d from an event for any reason, that race must be used in their yearend totals and cannot be used as a “dropped score”.

*Reference* *The Event Referee is responsible for resolving all scoring disputes and protests.

All protests must be resolved within 30 minutes of the race result posting per AMA/ATVA Rules. * Riders who are outclassing the field may be advanced from the “C” class at the discretion of the ATV Chairman and Rider Representatives. *Note: all adult classes are open displacement and do not require that the ATV be a production model, riders must be 16 years of age or older.

General Guidelines: (this section is for reference only, please consult AMA/ATVA rules and guidelines for complete rules) 1. All ATVs entered in competition shall be in good mechanical working order. Rider is solely responsible for judgment of the acceptability of his/her machine for competition.

2. Rider shall use the last 2 or 3 digits of their AMA number for their machine number. An earned or requested number may be used, provided that number is not already in use. Except for numbers 1 - 10, which are reserved for the previous year’s top 10 finishers.

3. Advancement of riders to higher classes will be based upon accumulation of points, performance, and/or ability. Chairman will notify riders being considered for advancement.

4. All Hare Scramble events must provide timing equipment at the scoring chutes.

Scoring will be on a lap-by-lap basis, recorded in minutes and seconds for every rider, so that the overall winner can be determined regardless of class. Scoring will be by transponder; a card will be sold / rented at riders' first event of year. Scoring will be manual if transponder system fails.

5. Overall XC winner may come from any class.

6. All XC events shall be from 1 to 3 hours long, and key times will be 3:00 PM. 7. Riders may be provided a parade / practice lap for a XC race. No passing will be allowed on parade lap. (Except for mechanical problems) 8. Recognizing that riders may want to try different types of racing, when a rider transfers from one type of event to a different type, (for example from motocross to cross country) the rider will be allowed to drop down one class, except for “A“ class.

This is in recognition of the widely different skills in each type of event, and shall pertain only for the new type of event the rider is attempting. However, if a rider is found very dominant in the new class, they may be advanced in that series as well.

Many of the tracks on the circuit have motocross sections incorporated, no rider from any class is required to jump, but may choose to. If you are not doing the jump, you must choose a line to one side or the other and KEEP THAT LINE!! Do not veer or swerve until you are clear of the obstacle.

Contrasting-colored leather jackets may be worn in place of a vest. Long sleeves must be worn in all competition.

3. Boots must be worn in all meets. They must be at least 8-inches high with any combination of laces, buckles or zippers, or specially designed and constructed for leg and foot protection.

4. A steel skid shoe may be worn. It must have a curved front that extends at least 2 inches over the toe of the boot.

5. All riders must utilize a shatterproof face shield or shatterproof goggles.

6. Wearing of Helmets: It is mandatory for all participants taking part in practice and races to wear a full face protective helmet.

The helmet must be properly fastened, be of a good fit, and be in good condition. The helmet must have a chin strap type ‘retention system’.

Competition Apparel: 1. Protective pants made of leather or other durable material must be worn in all competition. Protective pants and jackets (in short track and TT events, shoulder pads with long-sleeve jerseys may be used in place of a jacket) must be worn for road race, dirt track, short track, speedway, and TT events.

2. When riding vests or jerseys are used for rider identification, there must be an 8-inch number on the back, and the jersey and number must be of contrasting colors.

The helmet must conform to one of the following recognized standards and have a label affixed certifying its approval: USA: Snell M2010 or DOT FMVSS 218 Europe: ECE 22-05 ‘P’, ‘NP’ or ‘J’ Japan: JIS T 8133 : 2007 All helmets must be intact and no alteration must have been made to their construction. The rider may perform the following checks before taking part in practice or the race: That the helmet fits well on the rider’s head, that it is not possible to slip the retention system over the chin when fully fastened and, that it is not possible to pull the helmet over the rider’s head by pulling it from the back of the helmet.

ello out there to all you racers and non-racers. I am starting off with some sad news. Former Hare Scramble racer, Tom Smart passed away. He was 51 years old, way too young.

Rest in peace Tom. Our condolences go out to the Smart family.

As we kick off the 2016 Hare Scramble season, one has to wonder, did I prep my bike correctly? Will the ladies, or guys, like my new gear? And, who is this new series champ, Shane Spangler?

Well if you bought your parts from a small local brick and mortar shop, then your bike will be good. I can only hope that one of the scoring ladies will dig my new gear!

Now as far as the new champ goes here is what I know. Shane Spangler loves McDonalds before races, and he doesn’t wear a camel back. He is not afraid to sleep outside on the ground either. He races a slightly dated (early 2000’s) 125 that I am sure has a few zip ties holding a few things together. Shane is blazing fast and he deserves to be called CHAMP! I have not heard a story this good in Hare Scrambles since Shane Watts came to the US years ago. By the way Shane, you and I will have to have lunch one day at McDonald’s of course! Congratulations to you Shane Spangler for being our 2015 Hare Scramble Series Champion.

What should you expect to pay when you come to a Hare Scramble race….Gate fees will be $10.00 and race entry fees will be $35.00. These will be the fees for all events of the 2016 season. Also if you do not have your D14 or AMA memberships, be prepared to fill out those forms and pay the fees. (D14 fee is $15.00 and AMA fee is $49.00 per year). Lastly, you need a transponder to score your laps. If you don’t have one you can purchase one at the race for $20.00.

Some things I expect in the 2016 season are: 1) Speed through scoring, I expect a walking speed only through scoring. No

roosting the score personnel. This is for the safety of our scoring team and flag personnel. If you do not keep your speed down and roost the scoring personnel leaving the scoring lane, you could loose a lap. I am going to have a permanent way to mark off this zone that will be the same at every race. You guys/girls have done a wonderful job at being courteous in the past so I do not see that this will be a problem. This is just a reminder.

2) As far as sound testing goes, it will be the responsibility of the club to enforce this. The Hare Scramble series will provide the equipment and the club has to provide personnel. Also, I am requesting the promoting event advertise that they will be testing. Let’s help out by policing each other on this.

There are a few mistakes in the last issue for our rules and on the “2016 AMA D14 Events”: 1) Relative to start times, the minis will have their parade lap at 8:30 a.m. and start racing at 9:00 a.m. The big bikes will start at 11:30 a.m. NOT 11:00 a.m. The reason is that any club racing 50’s can use this time in between to hold the exhibition race. I would really like it that all clubs in the future to hold a 50cc exhibition race. In fact I think it would be awesome to see us big racers cheer on these little racers, like you would at the Supercross KTM Jr. race.

You cannot race any age group if you have been placed in the top 10 overall. Also there is a 50+ 3-hour class.

I want everyone to have fun. That is the reason why we race, is it not? At least it is still fun for me.

I also would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions on our banquet. Good or bad. I personally loved the trophies with the pictures this past year. I read all the responses that were filled out on the questionnaire and I am truly concerned at the results. I want this to be a great racing season for all and to end the racing season by celebrating your accomplishments at the year-end banquet.

(Bulldog Riders Motorcycle Club, Millington, MI) My Mom always used to say; “You’ll NEVER see your eighteenth birthday!”

I’m pretty sure she meant it now. I live everyday like it’s my birthday, trying to milk it for all it is worth- Trying to minimize some of the risks taken, but still sometimes getting caught up in the moment and making some adrenaline fueled choices. Whether it’s fenders and a tether on an ice bike, or career ending obstacles on a motocross track- chances are I’m gonna tell you how I feel.

So here we are, back at it, trying to put on a few good races as the MX Chairman for Bulldog Motorcycle Club.

At Bulldog M/C we are riders and racers putting on races for motocross racers. Not the smooth perfectly manicured stuff you see on videos from California (maybe the first few laps of practice, aye?), but real motocross over natural terrain, geography, and obstacles. Don’t worry, there’s going to be some challenging, technical stuff that only a few might be able to execute cleanly.

Our mission is that the ambulance never leaves the track! Sand and big whoops are our trademark and there’s no reason to candy coat it- Bulldogs gets rough (ruff?)!

We only have four events for 2016: • April 16 – Vintage only racing begins at 9am. Open motorcycle practice to follow the Vintage program. This will be our only open practice for the year.

• April 17 – Split program motorcycle motocross races. Gates open at 7am.

May 1 – Split program motorcycle motocross races AND the TAG TEAM TANGO is back! Put together your team of 2 or more riders for a thirty minute moto with a rider switch every lap. 125cc and up.

• October 9 – Split program motorcycle motocross races and the LONG MOTO is back! 30 minutes plus 2 laps with a nice, big, fat, cash purse and prizes!

F

inding seat time in Michigan, in the winter, can be especially challenging.

It’s so important to stay in shape in the off season to (hopefully) prevent injury when the riding season starts. If you’re not one of the lucky ones who get to head south for the winter, what options are there for seat time? One option that’s pretty helpful is a trip to Ram Jam Sportplex in Lorain, Ohio. Several Portland members and other D14 racers met there in February to shake off the cobwebs and get back on the bike. Cardio and core training are very beneficial, but nothing compares to actual seat time when trying to prepare for spring.

Speaking of spring, here are the dates for our race weekends: HARE SCRAMBLE • April 24 • October 16

OPEN PRACTICE AND MX: • April 9 – Open Practice • April 10 – MX RACE • May 7 – Open Practice • May 8 – MX Race • June 18 – Open Practice • June 19 – MX RACE • September 17 – Open Practice • September 18 – MX RACE If you don’t want to wait around for the April open practice to get that seat time in, consider joining the club and you can ride at your convenience. All we ask is that you put in a few hours a year keeping the track in shape and maybe flagging at an event.

The first two races of 2016 were on back to back weekends and both down in South Carolina. The National Enduro was the first weekend of February and the Full Gas Sprint Enduro was the second.

Sumter, SC National Enduro, Feb 7: I was excited to get the season started as I was riding my new Yamaha YZ250FX and would be making the move up to the A250 class. Prior to the event I hadn't ridden in any dirt since the beginning of December but was still fairly well prepared with the off-season training I had been doing. Being on row 74 the story of the event was sand whoops and roots dug out in the sand whoops. Long pine sections of deep sandy whoops were plentiful throughout the day and so was the arm pump early on. It was awesome to be riding again even if it wasn't a whole lot warmer. The sections were mostly the same with roots and sand whoops but had some nice loamy corners that were awesome to tear up. One section stood out because it was a muddy one. It started off alright with some good flowing trail until we made it to a deep ditch about 6 feet wide with about two feet of water in it. There was a bridge but that wasn't an option as guys were stuck after it and more were stuck all over the place. I rode around for a couple seconds looking for better lines but couldn't find any until I say a guy jump it. I decided this would be the best approach and even if I crashed at least I wouldn't be digging my bike out of a bottomless hole. I made it across clean and kept on going into more trail full of sandy mud and trails crossing everywhere. I only had one small crash all day and managed to come out of the first round in one piece. My results weren't stellar with a 16th out of 41 in A250 and 91st overall but I was content with them after not riding all winter. I'm really hoping to improve at the next National Enduro round in Alabama in mid March.  New bike new season, first race of National Enduro Series.

Gaston, SC Full Gas Sprint Enduro, Feb 13 & 14: This was the first time I had participated in this

series or any event in this format. You raced two loops of just 2.5 & 3.5 miles 3 times each day. It was definitely different than what I'm used to with wide open trails and lots of waiting around but the racing was super close and I enjoyed being able to hold it wide open for those short sprints. The first test of the first day definitely was a learning curve and I had arm pump like crazy but after that I loosened up and started riding like normal. I also started riding more like I had been riding last year as the rust was starting to come off with more seat time. After the first day I was sitting 64th overall and 18th in A Lites. For day two we would be riding the cross test backwards and riding the Enduro test the same direction. The cross test was 2.5 miles of grass sand track that the first day had about 1,000 race bikes go through it. Can you imagine whoops and braking bumps. I thought the cross test would be harder backwards but it actually flowed better and I felt much better, especially since I didn't have arm pump quite so bad. I didn't have any crashes in either of the days but made a few small mistakes that definitely cost me time. For day two I ENDURO continued from page 18

These trucks are not your daddy’s pick-ups.

We’re back racing again in September (10/11). This year we’re going to pay tribute with this Fall Memorial.
