Yea, it's May! I hope ya'll (no, I'm not from Texas!) have been enjoying a glimpse of the beautiful weather soon to be arriving. I pray by the time you read this paper, it'll be 80 and sunny! Hey, I know it's a stretch, but it could happen. This IS Michigan afterall!

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month. Whether you are a motorist or motorcycle enthusiast, please remember to "share the road" and to be extra alert when driving. And with the holiday right around the corner, it's especially important to remind drivers/riders, PLEASE do NOT drink and drive (or ride). There is someone who wants and needs you to stick around for a long time!

It's always a perfect time to make sure your AMA and District memberships are up-to-date. Do it now and avoid the extra time doing so while registering at your events. STILL only $15 for a D14 membership.

Visions

COMPETITION

Competition has always been a large part of my life. I have this problem of pushing myself to be better, faster, stronger in body and in thought.

Now this can go in many different ways.

It can be that I compete against myself, faster more consistent lap times, faster sections, better mile times on my runs.

It can also be seen in my work, where I find myself competing with the “clock,” as a mechanic, time is everything, I make my living by beating the clock.

The more I beat the “clock” the better my living, the better my abilities equals a better lifestyle for my family.

I compete against you, on the track as we race our motorcycles. I try my hardest to beat you, to be faster, to place higher, win on the field of battle! Now I know that I am never going to achieve being number one in racing, work or life for that matter, ( depending on one's definition of number one), but that does not deter my drive to be so.

To say I have a competitive problem is an understatement at best.

FEAR

Having a competition problem has it's down side, fear!

Many of you know I had a knee issue while riding last Father's Day. Now I am no stranger to knee problems as I have had 8 surgeries on my right knee since my ninth grade year of school. I have always pushed and trained to return to my former lifestyle and have most times exceeded the point where I was injured.

I have known this “fear” phenomenon many times as life changes. As your family grows, as the financial obligations grow. You worry about all these things even when you're racing.

It's been almost a year since I was forced to stop riding, to put my competitive nature at rest. Throwing my leg over my motorcycle now comes with a certain tribulation. As I return to the track, I find myself fearful of the “jumps and obstacles” that I know, let alone the ones I don't.

This past weekend was my first opportunity to return to the woods and ride.

I found myself completely struggling to ride my motorcycle through the trees and keep any consistent forward motion. I am afraid that I will not be able to return to my former state of competitiveness. Something has crept into my mind, doubt.

DOUBT

The doubt came in unannounced, I didn't invite it, it just decided that I needed to question my abilities and my drive. Should I being doing this at my age? What happens if I get hurt yet again? Do I have another comeback in me?

I hope to make a return to racing this month. I plan on trying a Hare Scrambles in our Series. I have no fantasy of being any good. I can only hope that my mind and body will work together as I start the process of feeding my need for competition!

Twice Is Nice

 Do you think #229 Konnor Visgar looks tired? Frustrated? Or all of the above? Konnor is one of the hardest working riders out on the track. He loves the sport so much that he races and practices every chance he gets. On this day he raced Innovation Schoolboy, rode the practice, then raced Supermini 12-16 and Mini Sr. He was frustrated here because his front end went over the berm before the big tabletop which allowed his competitor to take the lead.

He was fired up after that and took the overall wins in every class he entered.

PORTLAND TRAIL RIDERS (Portland, MI)

(April 8/9) April was a great month!

The bikes and quads were fired up after a long winter nap and racing season has officially begun. Portland Trail Riders held two races in April: on the 9th and the 23rd. The turnout was fantastic for both events, even with other tracks running.

We want to thank you very much for your support of the track, and we are working hard to make it a place you’ll always want to come.

Before open practice on Saturday the 8th, spectators were treated to some great Vintage Racing. We honored the memory of Kevin Stone by presenting all winners, and anyone who asked for one, with a commemorative plaque. It’s been a year since his passing. Godspeed, Kevin!

We think of you often. Thanks for smiling down on us with a glorious, sunny day of safe racing. Here are the vintage victors on this day: Transition #068 Tyler Neros, Iron Man #22 Michael Laczo, Innovation #780 Gene Huntoon had great battles with Mike Sutherland, while #229 Konnor Visger had Innovation Schoolboy all to himself, and the #1 of William Dale lived up to his number by dominating the Evolution class.

Sunday, the 9th, had equally gorgeous weather for racing. The track held up well, even into the afternoon classes.

Schoolboy 1 set the tone for those battles: #4 Hunter Wellman was kept on his toes by #998 Max Powers. Max needed Hunter to bobble, but Hunter refused.

Six races later, in 125 B/C, Hunter and Max finished 1 and 2 again. I may be slightly biased, but these boys and all the others on the gate were really exciting to watch.

#11 Brady Fruge was a runaway winner in 250 C and Schoolboy 2. Mr. Consistent! Speaking of being consistent, #977 Caleb Kebler went 1/1 in 250 A and Dylan Nicholson went 3/1 in 250B to take the overall win. #118 Chris Williams worked hard to close in on #881 Jerry Lorenz in 14+ and Open A. In the end, Jerry went 1/1 in both classes followed by Chris’s 2/2.

Congrats to #342 Mason Ferguson for the 1/1 finishes in Open B. #23 Kyle McCreery went 1/1 in Open C. Great job, everyone!

Meanwhile, over on the mini track, #104 Trey Milhisler won Quad 50 6-8 and #5 Mason Jackson won Quad 90 8-15. #416 Hunter Delp had a really good day going 1/1 in both 50 trail and SS. #304 Dalten Cooper took the win in 50 sr. exhibition. Great riding, guys! I see the big track in your futures!

After a little track grooming and a quick practice, the afternoon classes began. These races were interesting to watch. There were either epic battles to the finish line or run-away victories. Either way, these riders put on a great show.

In the pits, many spectators and racers from the morning session didn’t want to clear out like they normally do; there were too many amazing riders to see!

These 60+ riders, #104 Jeff Bost being chased by #822 Cliff Knudsen, are still competitive after all these years. I wonder how many motos they've raced in their careers. They'd give the young guns a run for their money with the way they go at it! Well done, gentlemen.

60+ riders #11 Ed Shively, #210 Gary Saya, and #769 Mike Ot are ready for the gate drop. Golden years? Says who?

Only if they also include a room full of the golden trophies these three have racked up through the years. You're an inspiration to the next generations, guys!

There were a ton of quad riders on the gates. It’s amazing what they do with their machines. #5x Mason Jackson won open 6-15, and #311 Blair Miller won Schoolboy Jr. Quad A’s champ was #90 Chad Reed, B’s winner was #529 Chase Seeley who battled hard with Jacob Hill and Kirk Karem, and C’s #3 Colton Newton went 1/1. Well done!

Jacob is on a new bike to start this new year. His 250 will be put to the test in in Schoolboy 2 and 250 C. Best of luck to you this season, Hoeve. (April 22/23) Fast forward two weeks, and we had an equally gorgeous race weekend, April 22nd&23rd. Instead of worrying about rain we had to be concerned with dust. We’re working out the issue our water truck was having getting stuck by the filling station. The rest of the season will be as smooth as the track at the beginning of the day! Let’s hear about the winners and battles that grabbed our attention in the morning classes.

 Did someone say New Bike, New Year? I would be remiss to not acknowledge motodad extraordinaire, Kyle Carrothers, finally getting a pit bike of his very own after years of "sharing" with his son, KJ, which really means he was stuck walking to every gate most of the time. It doesn't quite go with your tea cup, but we'll look past all that. Congratulations on your new purchase, Kyle! We'll be sure to keep the clowns off it for you.

 In memory of Kevin Stone, the accomplished vintage rider who lost his life last year doing what he loved most, Portland offered this beautiful plaque to every vintage rider who earned one, in his honor. May we always remember the fragility of life and be quick to show our love and appreciation for each other while we still can. RIP, Kevin! Photo

Over at the mini track, there was some more stiff competition. #416 Hunter Delp won the 50 SS class, #304 Dalten Cooper won 50 Sr. exhibition by coming back to win moto 2, and #213 Blake Bradish won the 50 Trail class. #990 Nathan Covert was the sole 65 beginner. Quad 50 LTD 4-6 rider #205 Grady Sullivan and Production 6-8 rider #20 Seth Bradley took home a 1st place plaque.

More big track grooming, a little more practice and it was time to start the afternoon classes. Open A & B had the first gate drop. #881 Jerry Lorenz and #342 Mason Ferguson both went 1/1. Jerry also won the 14+ class in Race 7. We’re looking forward to watching you battle hard this year at the pro nationals, Jerry. You were really improving your finishes last year and we hope you keep that momentum going.

Race 2 featured 125 B/C and Schoolboy 2. #4 Hunter Wellman stayed consistent, going 1/1, as did Austyn Stemler going 4/4. Jake Juett, Max Powers, and KJ Carrothers swapped finishes just to keep things interesting. #205 Luke Ware capitalized on Jake Hoeve’s bike trouble to take the win in Schoolboy 2.

In the third race, 11 Quad C guys battled for the win. #76 Mike Biland traded moto wins with his brother Jeremy. It’s fun to watch a family feud once in a while.

There was a 26-rider gate for Open C. #223 Bailey Weiler went 1/1. They were followed by Quad A and B. #16 Andrew Hartwell won A and #529 Chase Seeley went 2/1 in B, edging out Kirk Karem and Jacob Hill.

NEW SEASON NEW FUN! AT PORTLAND TRAIL RIDERS

 Mike Laczko had to work for his 1-1 in Iron Man PORTLAND TRAIL RIDERS (Portland, MI) | April 8 Story and photos by: Steve Baginski Well after a long off season, we headed to Portland M/C to kick off 2017 with round one. It was the first time returning since the tragic accident and passing of Kevin Stone.

Needless to say most of us had a tough time adjusting to him not being with us at this track. The people who ran the program did a great job in making us feel welcome. They helped with the grieving process as they did a great gesture and put a picture of Kevin on all of our awards. Everyone who earned one was very proud to have one and they even had some extras that they let some of the riders take home as a remembrance.

We were treated with some awesome weather and the rain that came during the week had little to no effect on race conditions. The track was prepped perfectly and we all had a great time!

The Transition and Schoolboy racers took to the track first with Tyler Neros and Gene Huntoon going bar to bar for the holeshot. Tyler would get the edge followed by Gene, Ray Brooks, Eric Havens and Chris Williams. Ricky Lamothe was just ahead of Brad Bolzman, Joe Sangster, Barry Simms and Al Doneth. The Schoolboy racers of Konnor Visger and Greyson were also in the mix. By the start of lap two, Tyler would take control of the lead as Chris would move into the number two spot. Al worked his way up to third on his new 80cc machine with Gene and Konnor doing battle in the same corner. Ray was out just ahead of Eric as he was pulling away from Joe and Ricky. Brad was next as he was struggling a little on the Husky instead of his normal KX. Tyler still was leading on lap three with Chris right on his rear wheel as the minis were battling with Konnor getting around Al. Gene still held down fourth as Eric was now up in the top five. Ray slipped back to sixth with Ricky still giving chase. Joe was also back one spot while Brad

was slowly gaining speed. With the white flag out, it was Tyler still with the lead but less than half a lap to go, Chris would make the pass. They would battle all the way to the finish with Chris taking the edge by only a bike length. Konnor still held down third overall as he went on to take the Schoolboy win. Al was battling back and forth with Gene after a few tip over’s and was running third. With less than half a lap to go, Gene would use his horsepower and make the pass for third.

Al would settle for fourth as Eric came by in fifth. Ray and Ricky were bar to bar for the last lap and just ahead of Joe. Ricky would get the pass made and take sixth with Ray in seventh. Joe had a good pace and held off Brad for eighth as Barry took tenth. Greyson had a fall at the start but would get going again and took second in Schoolboy. The second moto was more of the same with Tyler taking another holeshot. Gene and Chris were fighting for second with Al off to a better start in the top five. Coming to the end of lap two, it was Tyler still out front and looking smooth. Chris had him in his sights and was pushing. Konnor was up to third overall with Al and Gene still battling. Eric was having a good ride in fifth as Brad was getting comfortable and up to sixth. Ricky and Ray were banging bars again as Joe had a good view of them. Towards the end of lap three it was Tyler still with the lead and a small gap back to Chris. Konnor was still third but first SB as Gene had made his way around Al for third. Eric and Brad were still even as Ricky pulled a small lead over Ray. Joe had caught up to Ray and was taking a face full of roost in the sand. The white flag was out and it was Tyler hanging on to the lead. Him and Chris were very close the

Chris would take second and second overall. Konnor came by in an impressive third overall with the Schoolboy victory and overall.

Al rode hard with less mistakes to take third and the final spot on the overall podium with his 4-3 scores.

Gene would swap positions for fourth overall as Eric rounded out the top five in his first Vintage race. Brad rode a little better the second moto finishing sixth for seventh overall while Ray went 7-7 for sixth. Joe made a last lap pass on Ricky to take eighth but was only good enough for ninth overall. Ricky ended up taking seventh overall with his 6-9 finishes. Barry finished out the moto in tenth for tenth overall as Greyson finished second in Schoolboy.

The Iron Man racers were out next with Vic Flegel leading the way. Mike Laczko was a close second followed closely by Ken Argue and Dave Starr. Mike Mason was next just ahead of Rick Stone and Mick McCauley. Dale Darling had a slight edge over Stephen Phillips and Dave Mclean. Dave however wouldn’t make it but a few turns before his bike would come to a stop. He was able to get some help pushing it back to the pits. At the start of lap two, Laczko was out front with a bike length lead over Mason. Vic came through in third but would stall it just after the start letting Dave get close with Ken on his rear wheel. Rick and Mick were battling as Dale was trying to hold off

PORTLAND continued from page 9 the charge from Super Steve. Mason took over the lead on lap three with Laczko and Dave rounding out the top three. Ken was making the pass on Vic as they battled inside the top five. Rick was slightly pulling away from Mick as Dale and Steve were still close. With the white flag out, Laczko was pulling away and would go on for the moto win. Vic was gaining on Dave and with less than a half lap to go he made the pass for second. Dave tried to retake the spot but would come up just short and end up third. Ken made his Vintage debut taking a hard fought fourth with Rick in the top five. Mick took sixth while Steve was still trying to hang with Dale. Mason would end his day early and need a tow after his bike locked up on the last lap.

Vic was on a mission when the gate fell for moto two and earned the holeshot.

Laczko was again a close second, Ken in third and Dave in fourth. Mick and Rick were wheel to wheel just ahead of Dale and Stephen. Laczko had taken over the lead on lap one briefly but at the start of lap two, it was Vic back out front. Laczko was back to second with Dave up to third.

Ken was in fourth as Rick was on the gas in fifth. Mick was giving chase in sixth as Stephen was up in seventh and Dale very close eighth. Lap three was under way and it was still Vic out front with Laczko and Dave rounding out the top three. Ken and Rick were wheel to wheel as they pulled a slight gap on Mick and Dale was back in front of Stephen. The white flag was out and nearing the end when Laczko was the first to come by with Dave now up to second. Vic was back to third with Rick charging in fourth. Ken was back to fifth with Dale getting around Mick for sixth.

So at the line it was Laczko out front with a 1-1 and the overall. Dave moved up a spot from moto one taking second and second overall. Rick had a good last few turns getting around Vic for third but his first moto fifth put him back in fourth. Vic slipped to fourth but took the final step on the overall podium. Ken had a good ride going 4-5 for fifth overall. Dale also rode hard to take sixth in moto two and sixth overall. Mick had some issues in the last few turns and ended up with a dnf. Stephen stayed on the charge long enough and took seventh and seventh overall with Mick dropping back to ninth.

The Innovation class was the biggest one of the day with 15 racers. Michael Sutherland took the holeshot as Chad Morehouse was right on his rear fender.

The rest of the pack were all bunched up and came through quick. Michael came

through with the lead to start lap two as Gene Huntoon moved in to second. We were missing Chad because just after he had gotten into the lead, he launched the big table top and over jumped it. He would pull off the track with a very sore wrist and head straight to the pits. Cory Sutherland was up to third as Bryan Hoeldtke was looking for a spot to pass.

Todd Lane was out in a new class as the sea of 89 CR 250’s was growing. Bret Dittenber was next just ahead of Ray Brooks, Roger McKay and Eli Hovorka. Tom Lee was back out for another season of Innovation racing. Vic Flegel was next and doing battle on his Iron Man bike as he had a slight edge over the battling 125’s of Ryan Baeder and Mark Havalda II. With lap three under way, it was still Michael out front with Gene a solid second with Bryan up into the three spot. Bret was up a spot as Cory slipped back one as Ray was also up a spot just ahead of Todd. Eli was on the move and catching Todd as he was just ahead of Roger and Tom. Vic was still going strong as he still had a slight lead over Mark and Ryan. The white flag was out and it was going to a close race as Gene was all over Michael for the win. They would be close at finish but it was Michael hanging on for his first moto win. Gene was a close second with Bryan rounding out the podium. Bret held down fourth as Cory rode well on the new bike to earn a top five. Ray made the move on Todd for sixth and would take the spot with Todd finishing seventh. Eli held onto his eighth as Roger took ninth in his debut.

Mark had to ride his dads to a top ten this time out as his Inno bike is not quite done.

Vic would drop a spot on the last lap to finish eleventh with Ryan taking twelfth.

Joe Hovorka came out for another season on his XR taking thirteenth as Tom would have bike troubles with the finish in sight. He could not get his bike to restart ending up in a DNF. For moto two it was Gene grabbing the holeshot with Michael and Bryan fighting for second. Cory was once again off to a good start with a slight edge over Todd, Ray Bret and Tom. Ryan, Mark, Joe and Vic rounded out the pack. Eli didn’t make the start after he realized he had lost a drain bolt and all of his oil. He tried to get it repaired but the threads were stripped and he was forced to sit out moto two. Part way into lap two, it was Gene still in the lead with Michael and Bryan fighting in a very close second.

“Why do you let him race? It’s so dangerous!”

can’t possibly be the only mom that has heard this. I see the questioning look in the eyes of well-meaning friends and relatives whenever our conversation turns to the subject motocross and my son’s involvement in it. Believe me, I’m well aware of the risks involved in motocross. I fret, pray, and generally feel like vomiting every time Tyler lines up at the gate; and now that I’ve gotten to know and love so many of the other racers, I pretty much feel that way with every gate drop whether my son is racing or not. I know that I’m not alone. We moms talk. We agonize together at the track. We line up at the fence and cheer the kids on, encouraging them to go faster and jump higher despite our fear. We’ll also hurdle that same fence and run to an injured kid whether or not they’re ours because we all share that inherent need to protect and rescue them. Honestly, we get why people shake their heads and doubt our sense of judgment as we watch our kids launch themselves airborne and fly around the track like their hind ends are on fire; and why, after heinous crashes, we continue to support them when they limp back to their quad or dirt bike and hop right back on. We sometimes doubt our judgment as well, especially after those heinous crashes. But at the end of the day, we can’t and won’t stop them from doing what they love, because it’s not about us.

From the moment my son could crawl, he’s been infatuated with speed. He removed his own training wheels at age three and has somehow modified every bike and vehicle he’s ever owned in an attempt to make them better and faster. While other kids spent hours playing video games, he spent his free time on YouTube researching how to rebuild engines. He could barely spare a minute to do homework, but I remember

countless hours of his face being buried in a repair manual or focused on an internet article about how to jimmy rig the left knuckle bolt to the flux capacitor or whatever.

He saved religiously to buy his first dirtbike and every penny he earns now is lovingly spent on that quad in my garage. The point is that this is his passion and I see that same passion in the eyes of other racers at the track. I hear it in their voices when they speak, and I sense it in their words when I read their facebook posts about motocross. It’s actually a tangible presence that I feel and try desperately to photograph when I’m in the middle of the track and they’re shrieking past me in a rage of flying dirt. It’s apparent in their friendship and dedication to each other despite being competitors. Motocross is not just something they love to do…it’s who they are. I completely understand passion of that magnitude and that’s what I try to explain to the naysayers that have tried to question my maternal judgment. I can’t change Tyler’s dedication to this sport any more than I can change the size of his feet or the color of his eyes. If I had tried to forbid it when he was younger, I would have only broken his spirit without ever having succeeded in changing his mind. Moto moms get this. Life in general is dangerous, and we just happen to have kids that rise to challenge it instead of cowering from it. So while we appreciate the concern of others, we’re not willing to debate because if we have to choose between race weekends free from anxiety vs. passionate, competitive, dedicated, and fulfilled kids, we’ll choose the kids. We’ll choose them every single time.

Schoolboy 1 had a new champ that Sunday: #998 Max Powers had his first ever overall win on a big bike. (Proud mom moment. Bear with me.)

Race 9 was dominated by 250 A rider #977 Caleb Kebler, who was battling some terrible allergies, and 250 B rider #91 Dylan Nicholson. The whips you all throw over some of those jumps are breath-taking. Thanks for the show, guys!

The Quads were the last race of the day. #311 Blair Miller won Schoolboy Jr., #525 Autumn Biland took Schoolboy Sr. even though she couldn’t finish moto 2, and #5 Levi Simpkins finished 2/1.

Overall, it was a safe day/weekend/ month at Portland Trail Riders. We thank you again for trusting us to host events that are fun for the whole family. See you at the Hare Scramble on May 6th and then again for our third motocross/quad race

weekend on June 3rd and 4th. Stay tuned, but I’ve heard rumors that there may be some awesome track changes later this summer. Look for them at the September 16th ATV races and open practice with an evening Hole-Shot Contest. Sunday, September 17th, is our Fall State Championship race and Money Moto. Opening weekend was a great weekend for #4 Hunter Wellman. This was a common sight in both of his classes: #998 on his fender waiting for his chance to pass.

It never happened... until the next weekend.

Good friends make for some great battles! It's going to be an entertaining season for these classes.

 New year, new bike! #962 Reed Stemler is following in his dad, Luke, and big brother Austyn's, footsteps. This was Reed's first ever race and he kept it on 2 wheels and rode hard while being cheered on by his mom, Sheena, Grandpa Ken May, and Grandma Deb Thomas.

It won't be long before this one is out on the big track banging bars with his brother. Stay tuned!  #379 Kennedy Kebler crossing the finish line first. It was such a beautiful day to be at the track.

• By the time you read this the 2017 Monster Energy Supercross series will be in the books, but whatever the outcome, it’s been one for the ages. Sure Ryan Dungey lost a 27 point lead heading into the penultimate round, but his consistency is amazing. In the first 16 rounds he hadn’t finished lower than 4th. Meanwhile Eli Tomac’s season has been marked by incredible speed and a handful of sub-par performances.

• Speaking of consistent, how about Marc Marquez winning the MotoGP race at the Circuit of the Americas for the fifth straight year?

• Congratulations to two of the fastest D14 enduro riders for absolutely killing it at the Louisiana national – Tyler Vore scored an eighth overall, 2nd in the AA class in his first ride for the Airgroup/EE Husky team, and Talon Soenksen captured the A250 win.

• The much beloved Yamaha SRX600 went down the road this week – sadly. There’s nothing in its place yet, but the dual-sport/lightweight adventure bike bug has been nibbling lately.

• The Grand Kankakee Trail Riders but on a great enduro to start the D14 season, but wow were there some trees down! I know what I have to practice to say the least.

• It looks like more than one European manufacturer will have fuel-injected two strokes available for sale in the 2018 season. KTM is dipping its toe in cautiously as the 250 XCW is its lowest selling model.

• If you want a 2017 Beta, you’d better act quickly. The maker of the red and white Italian dirt bikes has posted that several of its models are sold out already.

• Broc Helpler and Johnny Barbour have parted company with GasGas, but the Spanish manufacturer has filled their spots with Damon Bradshaw and Fred Andrews.

• Off the bike, few things are more satisfying than teaching someone to ride. The little Beta eTrials bike my sons have is getting a workout in our backyard, and it’s exciting to see their confidence and riding skill grow.

• Kailub Russell is an incredible rider, but he’s got to keep his eyes open for Thad DuVall.

The GNCC season has a long way to go, but these two riders are separating themselves from the field at the head of the XC1 class.

• Jeffery Herlings finally reached the podium in MXGP competition, taking a second at the sandy circuit in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands. In doing so, Herlings suffered his first defeat at the circuit as Gauthier Paulin took the overall on his ICE Racing factory Husqvarna.

• Aldon Baker had to feel good about the results at the East Rutherford SX – his riders Ryan Dungey, Marvin Musquin, and Jason Anderson filled the podium in the premier class, and Zach Osbourne took the 250 win. Four-for-four is a great testament to his relevance and prowess as a trainer to the stars.

Motorcycle racing in general is a dangerous and extremely risky hobby for one to partake in; and many can argue about what discipline carries the most risk to rider and spectator alike. However, any form of competition done at excessive high speeds like road racing cannot be argued against as the primary hazardous motorcycle sport. Safety is paramount in these disciplines and in particular we will be looking at Flat Track and Ice Racing here in District 14.

Once upon a time the basic tech inspection was a common place among district events, it’s even mandated by AMA rules for pros and amateurs alike.

Unfortunately, there has been an alarming trend in absences of mandated tech inspections in District 14’s Ice and Flat Track racing. Clubs and promoters point the finger at the AMA for liability issues, claiming that in doing a tech inspection they are saying you can’t possibly get hurt. During dirt pre-sanctions one club member insisted AMA track racing president Ken Saillant issued the order to not do tech inspections. If this was the case, why is the tech inspection still required by the AMA rule book?

I personally called AMA to get some answers about this issue as well as others and have not been able to speak with Mr. Saillant to confirm or deny that he issued such an order. It would seem rather strange that the Track Racing president would blatantly ignore rules put into play for the safety and well-being of riders and spectators. One can only wonder if this accusation is just flat track voodoo with some magic fairy dust sprinkled on top, an issue that seems to plague the Flat Track and Ice divisions. (Ice chair Jerimiah Sherman has attempted to get clubs to conduct minor safety checks with no luck)

Great weather welcomed riders from the Great Lakes area (at least five states) to Roselawn, Indiana and the first enduro of the season. Warm temperatures, sunshine and a cool breeze made for great riding conditions.

Grand Kanakakee Trail Riders did a great job of laying a challenging course that including exisitng trail, some new trail and the first section was “broken in” by the family enduro participants the day before.

Over 330 riders were excited for the new racing season to get started and to see their enduro friends. The C class had 71 riders and they were required to ride the entire trail.

Some events allow a cut off for the C riders, as well as, the 132 - Vic Flegel - competed in the 50+ class and is the A rider representative for D14.

Masters and Womens classes. Williams Woods from Grand Ledge, Michigan had the best score of the day. Followed closely by fellow Family Enduro Vore from Chesterton, Indiana was declared the winner and he was followed closely by series graduate, Neel Bhagat. They were on the same minute and it must have been some Sam Mattingly from Martinsville, Indiana. Rumor has it that Sam was the beneficiary of a interesting racing. set of brake pads from the queen of the Six Day pit crew – Heather Soenksen. It make you

Joey Suges from Wheatfield, Indiana had the best score in the B class as he beat the wonder if the spare parts made a differenece as Sam beat Heather’s son – Talen Soenksen other 118 riders. The A class was won by Tanner Whipple from Colona, Illinois. He was by only 20 seconds. Each of these young guns won a section, but Tyler was on top of the followed by the winner of the 40+ class – Steve Vollmar and the winner of the 50+ class – podium at the end of the day. Anthony Kirvi and Ben Rasschke rounded out the top five Brian Lohman (old guys rule!!) overall places in a very close race – only seven seconds separated these two riders.

The closest racing was in the AA class. With a multi-district event, this class was The District 14 enduro series does not have any events in May and round 2 will be larger than usual with 22 Marquette, Michigan. I had an opportunity several weeks ago to attend an AFT pro flat track event and speak to AMA members from other districts about tech inspections. When I shared with them Michigan’s lack of a simple procedure and gross rule violations, they all looked at me very alarmed.

"You guys don’t Tech?" asked an AMA pro tech inspector who is also a district level tech inspector. Hearing this out of another AMA member's mouth makes one wonder again...was this an AMA issued order to not run tech inspections or have the mushrooms been well fertilized once again by witch doctors and fairies?

Now onto what I feel is the meat and potatoes of the conversation, why do we need tech inspections? With my own two eyes, I have seen the following... ratchet straps holding down front forks and rear ends, leaking gas tanks and lines, missing axle bolts, seats, exhaust and other parts hanging off bikes, rims missing up to 10 spokes, absences of brakes and many bikes that fail to meet the "workman like manner" category of the AMA rule book.

In an already life risking sport why do clubs and promoters choose to bypass a relatively simple pre-race procedure that is put in place to protect all who participate in AMA sanctioned events?

Real Vintage Racing D14's Vintage Flat Track Revival story and photos submitted by Kevin Lambert, Jr. Robby Knapp of Burton Michigan is no stranger to racing, having swung his leg over every make and model of bike known to racing sense the mid 70's and a third generation flat track racer who has ran everything from a p.w. 50 to a Kawasaki Twin, one would say the youngest Knapp of the bunch at 16, is most definitely a veteran. Knapp managed to beat many seasoned vets and former pros last year in the 79 prior vintage taking home the jacket piloting a Shell Framed Yamaha Tt500.

Vintage classes in Michigan flat track have seen a steady growth of participation the last few season in the 86-401 light vintage class, however the once flourishing 401-up vintage was split in two classes over a debate that has spawned some very heated arguments as to what real vintage racing is; the split had nearly catastrophic results on both ice and dirt for D14 and AMA's National competition.

The 2018 pre-sanction meeting was well attended by many veteran riders including Jack Warren, Tom Sparks, Bobby Knapp and AMA Congressman John Zwercan. The substantially lower participation after the split had put the class on the chopping block for the 2018 season putting all 401+ vintage bikes back in the barn to collect dust and feed corn in the intakes and airboxes. A very drastic measure was taken that day and all parties agreed to go from a 79 prior 2 valve and 85 prior 4 valve to the AMA sanctioned 86-750 88 prior class (see D14 supplemental and AMA rule book for details) The new rules allow all 2 and 4 valve machines, air cooled 2 stokes and select mono shock frames to share the track as the they would have 30 years ago, ushering in an era of historically accurate vintage racing; Riders began to revive their tt600 Yams, 505600cc Rotaxes and XR, and RS600 Hondas to prepare for what will be no doubt an uber competitive vintage season!

Vintage Racing is a cheap and fun way to enter the sport of flat track racing, machines can be a simply put together as an old stock framed xl250 or tt500 with slight modifications to the wheels body work and suspension and as complex as purpose built flat track chassis such as Champions, Star Racers and Knights. Each bike has a unique personality just like its owner and in recent times with the lack of a class between modern 85cc and 250cc classes it is a great stepping stone for youths to experience a larger framed bike with power that sits somewhere in between that of the prior mentioned modern classes. Many D14 riders have gotten their feet wet in racing on vintage sleds including Nick Myers, Tommy Lowe, Bob Knapp, Kevin Lambert Jr., Dillon Cook and Corey Desrosiers.

It is definitely hard to argue against the class' ease of afford-ability, level of competition and just plain fun factor, and this year the stage has been set for one of D14s largest vintage class participation ever! Now, time to dust off those old Honda, Rotax and Yamaha 500s to see who the baddest vintage rider in Michigan is for the 2018 season!

My intention of writing about the races is not working out as I planned.

I am not able to know what is happening. I can tell you my point of view, but I can guarantee you that will get quite boring. Red light… feeling like I am going to throw up. Yellow light… start shaking my leg so violently it starts to go numb. Green light… the world goes black. Gate drops…

I watch everyone leave the gate, then go. I can’t get a good holeshot to save my life. I have become convinced it is a subconscious experience I can’t control. My conscious mind is yelling. No, SCREAMING at my hands to let go of the clutch and twist the throttle, but nope. I sit there paralyzed until everyone is a safe 10 feet in front of me. Maybe I have an eversion to being run over? Maybe I am scared. Ugh no, I can’t admit that. I am not scared. Maybe it occurs because there was a particular racer whom I raced with in my younger, faster, possibly less scared days, who I was whole-heartedly convinced targeted me at every holeshot. In the old days, before computerized random gate picks, we would draw spoons or clothes pins with numbers sharpied on them to determine our gate pick order. I would pray, sometimes out-loud (hoping the increased volume would help the leader of our universe hear my plea) that I would get to pick after she did, so I could get as far away as possible. I remember at Loretta Lynn’s, I got near the last gate pick, like 40th or something to that effect. I was ecstatic I could get far away from her, like 41 people between us. Maybe on her projectile for me she would hit someone else. Nope didn’t work out as I planned, she still got me. On another qualifier race, she hit me so hard on the start, my bar pad flew across the track. As a disclaimer, I been described as having an overactive imagination by a few people. She probably only took me out a couple times, but in my mind, she is there waiting on the gate to take me out and run me over! All my competitors can thank this anonymous racer from the late 90’s for your advantage.

We have been selling Michigan Moto Lady shirts, and it has been going really well. I used the proceeds last night to by a bunch of random give-a-ways for the next race.

PORTLAND continued from page 11 the gap. Tom and Ryan rounded out the top ten as Joe came by giving me a waive.

Gene started lap three with a larger lead over Michael still in second with Bryan a close third. Bret and Cory both made their way around Todd pushing him outside of the top five. The gap back to Ray was also getting smaller with Ryan and Tom also still making moves. As they were now on the last lap and nearing the finish.

It was Gene out front with a comfortable gap. He went on to win the moto and the overall with his 2-1. The battle for second overall was still tight as Michael and Bryan were only a few seconds apart. Michael rode a smart last lap and held on for second but fell short of his first overall victory in second. Bryan would be a consistent 3-3 for the final step on the podium.

Roger would come through next after he had issues on the start and going a lap down finishing tenth. Bret was next in a solid fourth for fourth overall as Cory had a nice showing taking fifth overall. Ray

stayed on the charge to finishing sixth for sixth overall as Todd slipped back a spot to seventh overall. Ryan and Tom battled to the end with Ryan gaining the spot for eighth overall while Tom’s first moto dnf dropped him back to thirteenth. Mark rode well on a borrowed bike to keep him the 125cc points chase earning ninth overall. Vic had a tough day riding his Iron bike in two classes finishing eleventh with Joe in twelfth.

The Evolution racers were the last to hit the track with Kris Gillett grabbing the holeshot. Mike Poirier was a close second just ahead of Lance Reiner and William Dale. Tom Lee was off to a good start and had Aj Stevens on his heels. Brad Bolzman and Jason Colon were next as they were just ahead of Mark Havalda and Jeff Doneth. Jeff was racing a bike in Kevin’s honor as it was originally one of his bikes.

Jeff bought it in pieces and rebuilt it and even ran the noticeable 17E. Kris came around still in the lead to start lap two

as William was now up to second. Lance was all the way up to third as Mike slipped back to third. Aj was on the gas and up to a top five on his YZ 100 followed by Tom and Mark. Jason fell back a few spots just ahead of Jeff as Brad was missing from the action. His bike came to a stop less than a half lap in but luckily was close to a track exit and his truck. Part way into lap three, William was the new leader with Kris a very close second. The rest of the pack were holding down their same positions.

With the white flag waiving it was William still out front with Kris close enough to be eating his roost. Lance had pulled a slight gap over Mike in fourth as Aj was still on the charge. Tom was also pulling a slight gap as Mark was reeling in Jason. The battle for the moto win would come down to the last turn and it was William barely holding on for the win. Kris was less than a second behind with a gap back to Lance in third. Mike rode well for fourth in his first Evolution race. Aj had a strong ride finishing fifth with Tom in sixth. Jason would lose some time on the last lap but stay ahead of Mark for seventh.

Mark would take eighth with Jeff back in ninth. When the gate fell for moto two, it was once again Kris with the holeshot with Mike and Will in the top three. Jason and Aj were next as Mark had a slight edge over Jeff. Lance had stalled in the gate and was struggling to get his big 490 restarted. He would eventually get going again but way behind. Kris held on to the lead to start lap two as Will was now up to second with Mike holding down third. Jason and Aj were wheel to wheel as Lance was on the gas a closing in sixth. To round out lap three, Kris had the lead but had all kinds of pressure from Will as they pulled away from third. Lance was still on the gas and made his way up to third by the start of the last lap. Mike had his head down and putting up a fight in fourth. Jason maintained his small lead over Aj as Mark distanced himself from Jeff. As the lap and moto was coming to an end it was Will out front with Kris not even a second behind. They jumped the last downhill side by side and had one corner to go. Will was on the outside and Kris went for the pass on the inside. Will heard him coming and slammed the door and pushed Kris into plastic corner markers. Kris hit the marker with his foot and peg and still went for the pass! Will held it on through the

last left and up the hill and took the win by less than a bike length. Will earned his 1-1 and the overall but Kris let him know it wasn’t going to be easy taking second overall with his 2-2. Lance had a great ride coming from way back to take third and third overall. Mike was not far behind and happy with his 4-4 for fourth. Jason and Aj had a good battle but it was Jason with the slight edge at the finish taking fifth. But Aj had a better first moto and moved him up to fifth overall with Jason in sixth. Mark improved a spot from moto one to take seventh overall with Jeff taking eighth.

We are off to a great start to the season and I can only hope it continues! It seems that more people are realizing how much fun Vintage racing can be. We have already completed round two and we are getting ready for round three back at Bulldogs. Then we head to Battle Creek for a weekend double header on May 20th and 21st. Saturday will be a Vintage only race then open practice followed by a full day of D14 racing on Sunday. Then it’s over to Big Air on June fourth . FAMILY ENDURO SERIES

The Family Enduro Series started quickly with two events in April – Roselawn, Indiana and Roscommon, Michgan.

Mother Nature was in a good mood for the Roselawn event as the riders had warm temperatures and sunshine for a great day of riding. Grand Kankakee Trail Riders did a great job of getting over 300 riders signed up the day of the event. Each rider had to complete the registration sheet (the famed half sheet) and sign the waiver – YES, you need to complete both sides of the minor waiver.

The club set up an 11 mile loop and the older riders rode three loops. The first loop was at 18 mph and the riders under 9 years old had a later start time – did not ride the first loop. The second loop was the timekeeping challenge at 12 mph and the third loop returned to 18 mph.

The scores were very close for the riders who completed all three loops. Only six points separated the top 20 riders that did include some X riders. The overall winner was Brett Krumanaker from Huntington, Indiana and he competed in the 12-13 year old class. Kyle Dittrich was second overall and won the 14-15 year old class. The Harris brothers (Caleb and Ben) both finished second in these classes and had the same score – separated by only 31 seconds. I enjoy watching these younger riders prepare

for the next step to compete on Sunday as FES graduates.

It was great to see 17 participants ride the short course (loops # 2 and 3). We even had seven riders in the Buddy class. There were a lot of tired faces at the end of the event, but a lot of smiles during the trophy presentation. I am sure for many it was a quiet ride home.

We created a new class at the request of long time FES rider – Dave Barclay. I told Dave after the banquet that I need confirmation that there was enough interest for a 60+ class. I had 12 emails in a very short period of time. One of them was from a rider who calls the 60 years old young.

He enjoyes riding the family enduros and commented that added this class is going to keep him motivated to ride the entire series. We are always open to ideas on how to improve the series. There were 20 people who signed up for this new class.

Denny Vandecar came a way with the win, but the creator of the class came in second.

We also adjusted a couple of the other adult classes to 40+ and 50+. These classes now resemble the district enduro classes.

 Justin Kurncz Gets ready to Start enjoyed in Roselawn. The forecast for Roscommon the following weekend was for cold temperatures and rain. I received a number of inquiries on if the race would be cancelled and my response was we will ride rain or shine. It would be a different story if the weather included thunderstorms and high winds.

Attendance did suffer – either back to back events or the weather played a part in ony having 90 riders. The first loop was at 12 mph and most of the trails were exisitng ORV (orange triangles). There was a 2 miles section that had the riders following orange arrows and orange ribbon. The DNR hopes to use this new trail to reroute some of the existing public trail that needs to be retired.

The short course only had four riders under 9 years old and three of them were in the Buddy class. Once again the competition was strong in the 12-13 and 14-15 year old classes. Parker Mills winning the 12-13 class and Kyle Dittrich winning the old age group.

Shelby Handrich won the Women’s class, but Deb Noto, Sarah Brockschmidt and Michelle Dalton were all within a couple of points.

There were a couple of guys in the 50+ that learned a lesson about missing a reset.

When you get 22 or 37 penalty points for arriving to a check early, it does hurt your class placing. Remember that you get one penalty point for each minute you are late to a check, but two points for the first minute early and 5 penalty point for each additional minute (22 = 5 minutes early and 37 for 8 minutes early). I will not mention names, but I am sure they will not make that mistake again.

Floyd Allen won the 60+ class. My nickname for Floyd is FMF – Funny Man Floyd.

If you have not talked to Mr. Allen, I would encourage you to introduce yourself. He has been riding the family enduro series for many years and is still having a great time.

Thomas Dunn has been handling a lot of the scoring duties for the FES. Thank you Mr. Dunn. He does a great job with the data entry – including reading handwriting on the entry forms. The kids are legible, but the adults make it difficult. We apologize if your name shows up twice in the standings. We do our best to match the names during the sign up process, but we can fix duplications. Please take it easy on our eyes and print better on the sign up forms.

Another reminder….we post the scores on the display screens as the scorecards come in. Please turn in your scorecards BEFORE you return to your vehicle. Everybody wants to see how they did, pick up a trophy and head for home. If the posted score for one of your riders is not correct, please let us know ASAP. We had a last minute change during the trophy presentation. Next time once the scores are posted and printed so I can deliver the awards, the results for the trophy presentation are final. Any changes at a later time may impact the point standings, but will not delay the presentations.

Our next event will be in Marquette on June 12th – SUNDAY. The club reverse the event days – district event on Saturday and family enduro on Sunday do the distance that most of us have to travel. Our shorter event on Sunday allows for earlier departure time to head home OR, if school is on Summer break, start a vacation in the Upper Pennisula.

Hare Scramblin' PLYMOUTH BLACK HAWKS (Culver, IN) | Apirl 9 Story and photos by BreOnna Woodruff April 9 was the first day back of a new session . The day was beautiful at the Plymouth Black Hawks in Culver, IN. and it sure was race quality.

The race began at 3:15 pm and the racers were off. The overall average laps raced was 8. There were 7 divisions plus mini division. All of the racers did great for there first race back.

The A division (16+)finished the race off strong. The average laps for this division is 8. There were also 8 riders in the division and the top 3 racers are Braden Nichols in first with a lap time of 1:32:01.198 and finished with 9 laps.

In second place was Jason Booms with a lap time 1:33:09.087 and also raced 9 laps as well. Danniel Brendel in third with a lap time of 1:39:08.946 and over all raced 9 laps also. Everyone in this division did great and good job to those racers.

The next division was B (16+) with 4 riders who also did amazing. James Culver placed first with a lap time of 1:33:12.134 and finished 8 laps. In second place was Kyle Hill with a time of 1:42:09.187 and he finished 8 laps as well. In third place was Spencer Meekhof who finished 7 laps with a time of 1:31:03:823. Also we had Bradley Kerns in fourth who finished 3 laps with a time of 0:45:40.095.

O division (40+) had 7 racers but unfortunately 2 did not end up finishing. Chad Meyer came in first with 8 laps and a time of 1:31:39.425. In second place was James Cook who finishes with a time of 1:36:45.193 and finishes 8 laps. Scott Sanderson in third with a time of 1:36:57.664 and as well as the others he finished 8 laps. They all did mesmerising and I hope they did as well to themselves as they did to me.

C/Schoolboy (16+/14-17) there were 9 racer who also did great but 2 racers ended up finishing. The top 5 people are Cody Weller, Tobi Degroote, Jeremy Teachout, Seth Gilbert, and Zain Woodruff. Cody with 8 laps and a time of 1:33:19.686. Tobi had a time of 1:37:56.461 and finishes on his 8th lap. Jermey with a time of 1:39:57.767 and in that time he also did 8 laps. Seth placed fourth with a time of 1:30:08.973 and finished with 7 laps. As well as Zain who finished fifth finished with 7 laps and a time of 1:36:45.052. They all did great and a well done race to you all.

Vet A (30+) had a first place winner named Keil Kauffman with a time of 1:34;45.805. Also in the woman's (14+) Rachel Adams finishes first with a time of 0:48:42.616 and finished 3 laps. Sadly there where only one person in their division so they could not compete to show of all of their abilities. Even though you both had that predicament you both did prodigious.

And last but not least was the Vet B (30+) division. The top four are Jeffrey Gramzow, Sarah Meyers, Shawn, Jason Cottrell. Jeffrey finished first with 7 laps finished in a time of 1:30:54.373. Sarah finishes with a time of 1:32:29.601 and also 7 laps. Shawn completed 7 laps with a time of 1:34:13.993. Jason had 2 laps concluded his laps with a time of 0:48:41.616. All 4 of you did stunning and finished with a well done race.

We also had a mini class who did finomial. We had 7 mini racer. Nathan Meyer came in first. Dekota Blough Came in second. Tanner Nash came in third. Fourth place was Landon Nash. Fifth place was Deagan Blough. Six was Ashley Gramzow. Last but not least was Robby Robinson. You all did great and we hope to see you minis at the next race.

That concluded the race but, we can't forget about our overall winner . Also we can't forget about our mini class which helped us have 42 racers. All of the racers had a good race and we hope to you you all back at the next race which is Portland Trail Riders Club in Portland, MI on May 7th.

Can you believe our luck? For a solid week, Mother Nature threatened to drown the start of racing season, but at the last minute the sun intervened and gave us a beautiful first race day! ATVs were out in force and it was a beautiful sight to behold.

I’d like to point out that several of my predictions from last month’s edition were proven accurate. The weather was sunny and mild, moto moms prayed, cheered, and worried just as I said they would, I did indeed order something sketchy from concessions and regretted it, Jacob Hill was as neat and meticulous as ever, and my son came through with several eye rolls and sighs of exasperation. However, I must concede that I was dead wrong about how many people can precariously pile atop Sykes’ pit quad…it’s TEN, not seven. Another surprise was how much faster everyone has become…or maybe how much older and slower I’ve become. It was obvious when I got out onto the track for the first time that I was going to have to step up my game if I intended to capture any decent shots. You all looked amazing out there!

Portland was the scene for the first gate drop on April 9th. The 16-29, Women, 30 Plus classes were first up. Andrew Hartwell grabbed first place in the 16-29 class while Tyler Gregg finished second.

Autumn Biland won the Womens’ class while Makailey VanTiem placed second.

Jacob Hill claimed the 30 Plus class. Quad 70 Production ended with Blaze Snyder as the winner and Sway Day taking second.

In Quad 90 Production, Landyn VanTiem grabbed first while showing off how much more air he can put between his quad and the ground. No kidding…that kid has gotten fast!! Rounding out the morning, Mason Jackson stole first in the Quad 90 Mod class and Natalie Jackson took second.

ATVs began the afternoon with a whopping 15 quads on the track for the A, B, and C classes. Chad Reed won A class with Andrew Hartwell finishing second.

Chase Seeley took B class with Jacob Hill finishing second, and Colton Newton took C class with Collin Siple finishing second.

Meanwhile on the mini-track, Trey Millhisler won the Quad Youth Open class.

As the first day back at the track came to a close, Blair Miller won Quad Schoolboy, and Mason Jackson finished first in Quad Youth Open.

April 23rd brought us back to Portland and a fantastic ATV turnout and a few additional classes. Again the weather was beautiful, but dry track conditions stymied a few racers. In the 30 Plus class, Bryan Zimmer was holding third place and work-

 Chase Seeley In the afternoon, the excitement continued with the A, B, and C moto, as Tyler Gregg’s quad somersaulted over the same spot that halted Adam Kill earlier in the day. Andrew Hartwell was the overall winner for A class. B Class was won by Chase Seeley and Kirk Karem claimed second.

The Bilands owned C class, with Michael Biland scoring first place and Jeremy Biland taking second. There were two classes of Quad Schoolboy; Blair Miller winning the 13-15 division and Autumn Biland taking the 14-17. Finishing up the afternoon with the Quad Youth Open class, Levi Simpkins was the first place winner. Fortunately, no serious injuries resulted from the various tumbles throughout the day.

Next up is Battle Creek on the weekend of May 20th and 21st. I may be biased, but I believe this will be a seriously entertaining show, as all the moms will take to the track on practice day to showcase their moto skills. If we are truly going to turn the tables, then I expect every racer with a moto mom to be gateside, fretting and snapping photos and giving good luck hugs.

I actually tried to sidestep this event by proclaiming that I would be needed on the track with my camera. Sweet boy that he is, Tyler stepped right up to offer his photographic talent in my place. God bless him.

Jacob Hill again won that class with second place going to Tony Weed. Andrew Hartwell claimed first and Chase Seeley second in the 16-29 class. As for the Quad Women class, Sarah Wagner placed first and Autumn Biland took second. Sway Day was the first place winner in the Quad 70 Production class, with Blaze Snyder grabbing second. Landyn VanTiem took the Quad 90 Production class with

Camryn Mallory as the second place winner. In the Quad 90 Mod, Mason Jackson took first and Bryce Miller placed second.

The mini-track saw some excitement during the Quad 50 Production class. Trey Millhisler had a firm grasp on first place when he caught the edge of the track over a jump and rolled his quad, marking his first career crash and placing him third overall for the day. Seth Bradley snatched first place in the class and Gerry Bazzett claimed second. In the Quad 50 Limited stock 4-6, Grady Sullivan was the first place winner.

TURNOUTS CONTINUE TO GROW AT BULLDOG RIDERS MC

BULLDOG RIDERS MC (Millington, MI) | April 23 Story and photos by: Steve Baginski We had another great day of racing as we went to Bulldogs for round two. It was their first race of the season and they had a huge turnout. The program was a little slow to get started but they did a great job. The weather and track were awesome and it got rough with all the bikes. There were great battles all day long in every class. We had some of the biggest classes of the day with a total of 54 entries, 17 of them in Transition alone!

It would be great to have these numbers for the entire season, let’s keep it up.

The Evolution and Iron Man classes were out first with Evo going in the first drop. When the gate fell it was Kris Gillett once again with the holeshot keeping his streak alive. Bryan Hoeldtke and Mike Poirier were fighting for second with John Korte and Ron Delaney side by side.

Jason Colon had a wheel over Tom Lee and Brad Bolzman. Mark Havalda was just ahead of Bill Foster and Jeff Doneth as William Dale gave everyone a head start as he stalled in the gate. The second gate dropped for the Iron Man racers and it was a three way fight for the holeshot between Mike Mason, Dave Starr and Mike Laczko.

I’m glad I had recorded the start so I could go frame by frame to see who actually got the holeshot. It was a very tough call but I ended up having to say it went to Mason by less than a half a wheel. Rick stone was a close fourth followed by Randy Stone, Dale Darling, Kenny Green and Stephen Phillips. Kris came by out front to start lap two with Bryan a few seconds behind. Poirier was holding onto third with William already up to fourth.

Brad had his bike fixed from round one and was charging hard in fifth. Ron was on a borrowed bike and was just ahead of John who loaned him the bike. Tom was a few bike lengths behind them as they pulled a slight gap on Mark. Dave and Laczko came through next as they battled for the Iron lead. Mason was only a second behind as they all pulled away from the field. Randy was up a spot and in front of Rick as they battled inside the top five. Jason had some first lap issues and lost a little ground as he was in the Iron riders. Dale was just ahead of Kenny with Jeff and Stephen all in the same section of track with Bill just a few seconds back. Kris came by to start lap three and was opening up a nice lead over Bryan and Will. Mike was holding on to fourth as his

rival Brad was now up to fifth. Ron was next as he now had Tom between himself and John. The Iron battle was still going strong between Dave and Laczko with Dave leading the way. Mike still had them in his sights but slowly fading in third. Mark slipped in front of Randy as he still had a lead on Rick. Jason was making some ground as Kenny was making the pass on Dale. Kris came by to start the last lap with a nice lead over Bryan then Will. Mike was still pushing as Brad was slowly closing the gap. Tom was now up to sixth with John closing in seventh while Dave and Laczko were bar to bar. Mason lost a little more ground to the leaders but was still holding third. Ron lost a few spots and was back to eighth as Rick made his way around Randy. Kris came to the checkered flag and would take the moto win. Bryan rode to a smooth second as Will came by in third. Mike held on for fourth as Brad closed in on the last lap and took fifth. Tom and John battled on the last lap with John taking the spot with a half lap to go and finished sixth. Tom would end up seventh with Ron slipping back to eighth. Jason came by to take ninth as Mark led the way for the 125’s rounding out the top ten.

Jeff struggled a little in the sand to take eleventh as Bill took twelfth. For the Iron guys, Mike would make the pass for the lead mid way through the last lap and hold on for the win and his third in a row. Dave was a close second as we lost Mason on the last lap as he dropped from third. Rick would inherit the position with Randy and Kenny rounding out the top five.

Dale would finish with only a few second gap over Stephen for sixth and seventh. Kris was at it again

 Brad Bolzman had his first race issue figured out and was a solid top five in Evolution

with another holeshot for moto two. The start didn’t go so well for Ron as he lost the front and slid into the holeshot line and Brad had nowhere to go. Brad ran right into his bike and did a handstand. Somehow he would land back on both wheels and ride off. Ron would get to his feet and push the bike out of the way. He would take his time to restart the bike and re enter the race.

The second gate drop fell and it was Dave with the holeshot with Laczko a close second. As they settled into a rhythm it was Kris out front and pulling away. Bryan took over the number two spot with Will charging into third. Mike moved up to fourth as Mark Becker was on the gas in fifth. John was running sixth just ahead of Brad, Tom and Jason. Laczko came by next as he was now leading Iron as he had no room for error with the pressure from Dave. Rick came by in third as Kenny was riding hard in fourth. The white flag was out and Kris was still out front but his lead was shrinking as Bryan was charging hard. Will was next as he made his way around Randy, Dale and Stephen as they were all within a second of each other. Becker came by making the pass on Poirier for fourth with Brad still closing the gap. John was holding onto seventh with Tom still pressuring and just ahead of Jason. Dave cam by as the new leader of Iron with a couple second lead over Laczko. As they started to cross the finish it was Kris with another moto

win but Bryan had closed the gap a lot and was within a second. Will came by a little ways behind finishing in third. Becker rode hard to earn fourth but his first moto dns dropped him back to twelfth overall. Poirier was fired up after being passed on the last lap and stayed with Becker to the finish but couldn’t make the pass. His fifth in moto two was still good enough for fourth overall as Brad came by in sixth to finish in the top five overall. John had a good battle and took seventh for sixth overall while Jason gained a spot on the last lap as he got around Tom for eighth. Tom had a better first moto giving him seventh overall with Jason back in ninth. Havalda rode consistent to a 10-10 for tenth as Bill and Jeff swapped positions with Bill earning top ten overall with Jeff in eleventh. Dave had to ride hard for the last lap and would go on to win the second moto and the overall.

Laczko finally lost a moto and the overall as he slipped back to second. Rick was a steady third and had an easy last lap as Kenny went missing after a lapper messed up his race and forced him to stall. As he was trying to restart his bike he was forced to watch positions slip by. Randy was the first to go by as he took fourth and fourth overall. Stephen was next as he was able to stay ahead of Dale on the last lap o take

fifth overall. Dale took sixth while Kenny finally got going gain but took a disappointing seventh.

The Innovation and lone Schoolboy racers were off next with Gene Huntoon taking the holeshot. Eli Hovorka, Lance Shelton, Michael Sutherland and Bryan Hoeldtke were all side by side as the rest of the pack was all packed together. As they all got sorted out and started lap two it was Lance leading the way. Gene and Bryan were a close top three with Michael in fourth. Cory was next just ahead of Todd, Eli and Kris Gillett. Bret Dittenber and Ray Brooks were side by side with a bike length lead over the Schoolboy of Christian Renfroe. Steve Adema had a slight edge over Roger McKay and Ryan Baeder with Mark Havalda II a little ways behind after stalling on the line. Lap three got under way with the battle for the lead shaping up as Lance was being hounded by Bryan. Gene was holding onto third with Michael in fourth as Kris was making moves and into fifth. Cory and Bret were next as Ray also made his way around Todd. Roger was also making passes and now in front of Steve and then Eli. The white flag was now waiving and it was Bryan out front with Lance and Gene all on the front straight together. Kris came ripping through as he was up to fourth with Michael back to fifth. Bret was still being pressured by Christian as Ray had just made his way around Cory. As they came to the finish, it was Bryan out front with a nice lead a moto win. Lance was able to hold onto second after leading a few laps.

Gene had a lot of pressure for third as Kris caught him on the last lap but finished fourth. Michael put up a good fight to stay in the top five followed by Bret and the Ray. Cory lost a few spots on the last lap as both Todd and Roger made their way by. Todd made his way back up to eighth with Roger and Cory in the top ten. Steve held on for eleventh as Eli slipped back to twelfth after a nice start. Ryan came across in thirteenth as Mark caught the pack after it took him a while to get his bike restarted on the line.

When the gate fell for moto two it was the Bryan show as he grabbed the holeshot and checked out. Gene started good as the rest of the pack was all bunched up again.

Part way into lap two, Bryan was out front and looked to be on cruise control. Lance had taken over second with Gene a very close third. Michael was just ahead of Kris inside the top five again with Cory holding off Ray and Christian. Todd came by next with a small lead over Bret, Steve and Eli. Mark and Roger were battling next just

Cory had some good battles in the moto to take ninth as Steve fought hard to take tenth for tenth overall. Roger fell back a few spots as Eli also made his way by for eleventh but Roger’s first moto ninth was good enough for eleventh overall. Eli would then drop back for twelfth overall as Mark and Ryan swapped positions giving Mark thirteenth overall as Ryan slipped to fourteenth.

The huge Transition class was last to hit the track with Jeff Plawecki leading the way. He had a sea of riders behind him and was a great race to watch. As they came around to start lap two it was Jeff, Tyler Neros and Chris Williams all going over the same jump at the same time. Gene Huntoon was into fourth as Lance was the first

125 in fifth. Shawn Kish made his return running sixth just ahead of Ray and Derek Brooks. Eric Havens was next as he split up team Brooks as he was being chased by Dillon. Rob Goupill was right on his rear fender with Brad Bolzman back out on the Husky. Newcomer Tom Alampi was just ahead of Barry Simms and Kenny Green. Tyler briefly took the lead on lap two but with lap three under way, it was Chris and Jeff side by side. Tyler was gone from the top five as he had a hard crash and was slow to get going. Gene and Lance were now fighting for third as Shawn rounded out the top five. Ray and Eric were next as Tyler was now back on the charge. Derek went back a few spots and was battling hard with Rob and Brad. Tom was just ahead of Dillon followed by Barry and Kenny. Chris came through on the last lap barely ahead of Jeff with a half lap to go. They would battle all the way to the finish with Jeff looking for a spot to pass. Coming into the last turn it was Chris out front with one straight left.

 Michael Sutherland is always throwing roost on his CR 500 Jeff held it on through the sand rollers and was hard on the brakes. He dove to the inside and jumped the final single to take the moto win. It was a close race with Jeff taking the edge going into moto two. Gene was running third on the last lap but it was Lance making the move just before the finish to take third away from him. Shawn rode to a smooth top five in his first race of the season. Ray had pressure the entire last lap from Tyler but would end up sixth after some “team orders” forced Tyler to stay in seventh. Eric came by in eighth as Derek and Brad had a good battle on the last lap. Derek would hold on to the spot with Brad rounding out the top ten. Tom would continue to charge ending up with eleventh dropping Rob back to twelfth.

Dillon had some late moto problems falling back to thirteenth just ahead of Barry, Kenny and Ricky Lamothe. Jeff started moto two where he ended moto one and took another holeshot. Gene and Chris were next as Tyler was still sore from the moto one crash. As the dust settled and on lap two, Chris and Jeff were side by side for the lead with Tyler a second behind in third. Gene was back to fourth with Lance up to fifth. Ray had a little tip over after a good start as Shawn made his way into sixth. Tom and Rob continued their battle as they were just ahead of Eric. Brad was up to tenth as he was holding off team Brooks lead by Derek then Ray and Dillon.

lead as Tyler as now up to second with Jeff in third. Gene was holding onto fourth as Shawn was closing the gap. Lance was a little ways back as Eric and Tom were side by side. Brad came by next with a bike length lead over Rob as Ray was making moves and had Brad in his sights. Dillon was keeping pace with Derek a few seconds back and about to go a lap down to the ever fast non current class leaders. The white flag was out and Chris was still out front but it was Jeff back up to second with Tyler back to third. Gene and Shawn were now wheel to wheel with less than a half a lap to go. Lance was back to sixth as Rob was now barely ahead of Brad. Ray was in ninth and still had a lot left. Eric was next as him and Tom came together just after they received the white flag. It took them a while to untangle their bikes with Eric getting going but Tom pulling off. At the finish it was Chris out front with the moto win and the overall. Jeff held on to second for second overall as Tyler’s 7-3 dropped him back to sixth overall. Shawn was on a mission and on the last lap made the pass on Gene for fourth. Gene fell to fifth and Lance held on for sixth as that put Shawn, Gene and Lance in a three way tie for third overall.

So Shawn’s 5-4 gave him third while Gene’s 4-5 put him in fourth and Lance going 3-6 for fifth overall. Ray also made a few more passes on the last lap moving all the way up to seventh for seventh overall. Rob and

Brad would swap spots a few times on the last lap with Rob coming across in eighth but his 12-8 dropped him to tenth. Brad had to settle for ninth and ninth overall with Eric ending up tenth after his get together with Tom. His first moto eighth would be good enough for him to take eighth overall.

Tom would end the day with his 11-11 for eleventh. Derek would get the overall edge with his 9-13 scores with Dillon a spot back in thirteenth with his 13-12 scores. Barry took home fourteenth as Kenny decided to sit out his second moto.

The first two rounds are in the books and is shaping up to be a great season of Vintage MX. I think the new points system and new faces are going to make this our most successful season to date. We are preparing for round three back at Bull-

dogs on May 7th. Then we have a double header at Battle Creek on May 21/22. After that it’s off to Big Air on June 4th then a few week break before going to Cadillac on June 25th.
