Finally Summer has arrived and blessed us with some really gorgeous weather, albeit HUMID. Now I don't know about you folks who wear helmets, but for those of us that don't, humidity just means frizzy hair days!

However, due to varying factors of submissions, printing, and mailing, there is no guarantee the newspaper will reach readers by a specific date in the month. White River Enduro

June 10th 2018 saw the return of the White River Enduro after more than 25 years hosted by the newly-formed Lakeshore Trail Riders group. All of the time sections were held on private land, part of them were some people's personal riding areas, a few of the sections were 100% new never-seen before trail!!

So first and foremost, thank you to the landowners, who without them we would have had no event kudos to you all!! On a personal note, I helped put this enduro on more than 25 years ago when it was all public trail. It was definitely an interesting contrast considering we used zero public trail, all 6 timed sections were private land with transfers ... that was actually very well received. Onward we go!

The riders were greeted to near-perfect conditions as the dust control was in full effect on Saturday rumors have it that mother nature may have over watered a couple of places but overall I think she did a pretty amazing job !! temps were near perfect until the Riders return which greeted them with a round of sunshine On to the event ... after a short transfer section from the start at staging, Section 1 saw the first time section, it was definitely one of the favorites of the day ... a great mix of hardwoods, pines and a bit of a grass track gave the riders a little bit of everything.

South Fork is a pretty amazing loop, most all of the riders came out smiling ... fast guys were happy but late ... after a short transfer of just over a mile to section 2 ... 2nd section again a crowd favorite it was a blast to ride 100% new trail mostly hardwoods but super fun ... albeit a tad short, but very fun nevertheless except maybe for that one guy that parked it in the swamp! I'm sure that'll make a great story around the fire!

After 2 they had a transfer section and then on to section number 3 and again 100% new trail tricky fun tight gnarly section with a great pine section left the riders sweating and smiling and glad to be heading out down the road 1 mile to gas stop where the cow patties were free!

Ahh, Section # 4 right behind gas found the now infamous Erickson's Bridge Crossing ... it was a doozy! Early numbers made back some time on this one and for those of you who had the pleasure of getting helped by Daniel Fox he was the kid covered from head to toe in mud huckin bikes like they were cord wood!!! Far and away the VIP of the WHITE RIVER ENDURO! Daniel you rock !!! The rest of the trail was awesome ... #4 was the longest section of the day!! Most riders dropped a bunch here!

On to Section 5 after a transfer section, this again was all new trail minus a sprint across the MX track and a little dune ride :) Mostly hardwoods throughout, all in all a challenging but very fun section. I was at this out check at this section and saw a lot of smiles and more than a few high fives !! especially from some of the elder fast guys riding :) ... even though some wanted to ride this section again..it was back to staging where the B/C Master, women classes called it a day !!

A/AA, guys headed north to Section # 6 the infamous DALEGATE! Where a few B riders decided to ignore the rules and ride it anyway ... every one of them regretted it and didn't make it to the outcheck before they bailed! It was the real deal for sure!

It was a true test of the A /AA riders by far the most technical section of the day, and tested them ... some to their limits but most were happy and ready to return to staging after a long hard day in the saddle. Tyler Vore showed the reason he's leading the Series again as he was faster in most every test. Congrats and in his words "Hands down the best enduro I’ve rode in a long time. Awesome trail and good organization.

Great job! " Thank you Tyler we'd say that's about the best compliment you could have given us!

 Daniel Fox Well that about puts a wrap on it from Holton, Michigan. If you missed this one you missed a great Enduro! Thanks to the whole LSTR crew and everyone who came out to help make this event a success and who proved that we can add enduros in Michigan ...

You just have to be willing to do the work! :) Last quote from an exhausted B rider I had to help load his bike for him. I asked him, "So what did you think? Did you have fun anyway ??"

"Oh yeah..I'm smiling sore and ready for more" See you next time on the trail! It was truly a blast ! :) One quick short soapbox note ... if you're going to an enduro PLEASE make sure you have the required equipment! Don't put the burden on the club of dealing with the authorities because you couldn't put a $100 light on a $9000 bike! Okay, end of rant!

Summer Time!

Welcome to summer time in District 14!

We are running on all cylinders and cruising down the road at a full speed! Our racing divisions are in the heart of their season and the clubs and promoters are hopefully being filled to capacity! This is the time we look forward to, good weather, sunlight and long days. Riding season in full bloom!

Racing!

District 14 schedule has something on it for almost every weekend from now until November. Some kind of motorcycle and/ or ATV event and or practice all over the State and some across the borders in Indiana, Ohio and although part of the Great State of Michigan (not all of it is the District 14 region), our beautiful Upper Peninsula! We appreciate every one of our members support and love of racing and riding!

Riding!

The wonderful part of living in Michigan is all the riding opportunities available to all of us. With 9 million acres of state and federal forest lands with approximately 4,000 miles of designated ORV trails you have lots of places to ride even if you don't race.

With the passage of Public Act 240 of 2008, many counties roads were opened up to us to access food fuel and lodging to make it easier to ride your ORV and get around between trails and communities eager for our spending.

Please remember that you need both ORV stickers to ride the parks or trails. When using county roads, headlight and taillights are the LAW! Maps of the trails are available at www. michigan.gov/dnr

Know before you go!

Check the area you plan to ride to make sure the trails and roads are open to travel to avoid any conflict with law enforcement and a costly ticket.

Vacations!

The best part of this great State is the variety of things to do. You are able to plan a vacation that could include riding/racing, add to it camping and hiking and biking, take a trip to one of our tens of thousand rivers, streams or lakes for boating, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The opportunities are limitless to enjoy this Summer in Michigan!

District 14 Congratulates!

The District would like to offer our congratulations to Off-Road Riders Tyler Vore and Talon Soenksen for qualifying for the International Six Day Enduro in Vina Del Mar, Chili! This will be Talon's 2nd ISDE and the first for Tyler Vore. Great to have D14 represented at this world event! Help support these riders by visiting www.amad14.org/racer-support on our website We also congratulate our very own motocross Chairman Kreg Bigelow and his son Kanon for qualifying for the Loretta Lynn Nationals at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills Tennessee.

Last year Public Act 288 was passed and the procedures are moving forward and opened up forest roads in the upper Lower Peninsula to ORV's and further progress is moving on in the Upper Peninsula and the Southern Lower Peninsula.

To all that have qualified to the nationals, and to all of our riders that compete in other series and national events, congratulations and thank you for representing the premier District in the AMA, District 14!

Oakland County in a joint venture with the DNR is scheduled to open a New ORV park in June of 2019

WET WEATHER ONCE AGAIN AT BIG AIR

 Gene Huntoon (780) and Brad Bolzman (07) seemed to be this close in all four of their motos Big Air MX (Newago, MI) | June 3, 2018 Story and photos by Steve Baginski As we headed to Big Air for the race on the third, it looked like it was going to be a great weekend for racing. Then during the night, Mother Nature had a different idea. It was some of the hardest rain I have ever heard! And it wasn’t for a short period of time either. When I woke up the ground and track were soaked. The crew did a good job to make the track race ready in a short amount of time. We ended up having some smaller turnouts because of the weather but the strong battles continued for round five.

The Innovation class was off first as they were combined with some new bike classes.

Brad Bolzman was first into turn one and grabbed the holeshot. Just as he took the holeshot though, he slid out and went down. Todd Lane took over the lead as Brad let the entire pack go by before getting going again. Todd held onto the lead as they came around for lap two with Kris Gillett up to second after battling with Gene Huntoon for the first lap. Tom Claerhout had his usual slow start but was up to third. Ray Brooks was up to fourth and just ahead of Gene and Brad. Mark Havalda and Steve Adema were in a good battle as the leaders were slipping away. Todd had some late moto pressure as Tom was closing the gap. It was down to only a few seconds but with the conditions and shortened moto, Todd took the win with Tom and very close second. Kris rounded out the podium as the fight for fourth was on. Gene took over the spot with one lap to go and had Ray and Brad giving a ton of pressure. Gene held on for fourth as Ray was only a half bike length ahead of Brad at the finish. Mark had a good lap to get him ahead of Steve as he was the last rider on the lead lap in seventh, with Steve in eighth just

barely a lap down. Moto two got under way with Brad grabbing another holeshot, only this time he didn’t crash. Tom was a close second and would take over the lead in the next few corners. Todd was on the gas and into second quickly with Brad back to third. Kris was running fourth just ahead of Gene and Ray while Mark and Steve continued their battle. Tom was leading on lap three but as he came up the middle of the track his bike quit.

Todd moved into the lead with Gene on his rear wheel. Ray took over third with Brad back in fourth. Kris had gone missing from the top three as he had a hard crash. He did get back up on his own but decided it was best to head back to the truck and take it easy. Tom finally got his bike back going after turning his gas back on….. just as Mark and Steve came by still wheel to wheel. As they checkered flag was waiving, Todd was out front to take another moto win and the overall. Gene held on to second for second overall with Ray taking third for fourth overall. Brad struggled back in fourth after his holeshot to end up fifth overall. Tom was on the gas but after taking so long to get his bike restarted, he could only manage fifth for third overall. Mark was back in sixth as he pulled a nice gap on the last lap over Steve

The next race was busy as it had the Transition, Evolution and Historic classes all together. Trans was in the first drop with Ricky Lamothe taking the early lead. Chad Morehouse was a close second with Matt Howard, Brad Bolzman and Gene Huntoon rounding out the pack. Ricky Was holding the lead on lap two with Chad still in second Matt had gone down in the back and allowed Gene and Brad both by. Ricky continued to lead the field and take the win with Chad a close second. Matt made his way back to third with Gene and Brad fighting every lap. At the finish it was Gene just ahead to take fourth and Brad in fifth. The Evo and Historic racers were in the second drop with Tommy Lee leading the charge. Dave Starr was on his rear wheel but that only lasted a few turns as he would once again have chain derailment issues and end his day. Todd Lane was back out just ahead of John Korte, Kris Gillett and Derek Michael. Mark Havalda was leading Tanner Gunsell and goofball Tom Claerhout. Dean looked to be done on the gate with bike issues but just before the leaders of the first drop came by, Dean came through turn one pointing down at his bike. His kick starter had broken and needed a push to get going for the race. Kris was out front by the end of lap one and would never look back. He rode smart to take another moto win with Tommy also riding smooth to take second. Mark came by in third early on just ahead of Derek as we were now missing Todd and John. Todd had a bike failure which ended his day. Mark fell back a spot to Dean at the start of lap three but Dean would come together with John and stall. So with a broken kick starter he had to push to the downhill to get it started again. Mark would then retake the spot and finish in the moto. Derek also took advantage to take fourth as Dean finally crossed in fifth. John would also get going again to finish in sixth. The Historic one was crazy as Tom started lap two in the lead with Tanner in second as Dave was out. Not long after the start of lap two, Tom would have some troubles of his own handing the lead to Tanner. Tanner pushed his bike to the limit and rode every lap to take his first ever moto win.

Our Schoolboy turnout was low with the only rider being Nick Michael. Since he raced the day before on his vintage bike in the Supermini class, we decided that it

To say that the D14 Hare Scramble series is doing well is an understatement. We had a great turnout at the first race, but to have well over 200+ riders at every round so far this year is simply awesome.

After the first round in Indiana the series moved to Portland Trail Riders Club.

The riders had great weather and an all new moto track that was prepped to perfection. The club does a great job every year trying to get the most out of the property that they have to work with. This year we had about 4.5 miles of a challenging course. The thing that made it the most challenging was all the riders. With 250+ riders on a 4.5 mile track. Yeah, it was busy out there! A big thank you to my scoring team and the great back up people the club assigned us. They had no time to rest as it was a steady line of riders for 2.5 hours.

After a couple weeks off, the series headed to the great north for the Twin Bay Trail Riders Club event. This was a new track that the club put together on a new piece of property in the rolling hills of northern Michigan. The club did an awesome job laying out a great course of about 9 miles. This course had just about everything you could want in a HS track. Hills, off cambers, grass track, moto, you name it, and we had it. The racing was good and I think everyone would like to go back to this track again. Thanks Twin Bay, great job.

After the holiday weekend the series headed to the trusty Bent Wheels Club over on the north east side of the state. When I talk to riders about this track you get some different opinions. Some love this track and some not so much. But with over 200 riders attending it, it can’t be that bad. The weather leading up to the event was great and the track the night before was in perfect race condition.

Well the morning of the race Mother Nature had a plan to water the track for us. So the perfect track became very slippery and the muddy spots got worse.

When this track gets wet it is a challenge. A big thanks to the Bent Wheels Club for all the hard work they put in leading up to the race. There were many tired faces after the race but it sounded like all had fun.

Up next will be Dutch Sport Park. We have not been to this track in a few years so it should be a lot of fun. They have the Battle Creek Motorcycle Club helping with the track lay out so this will be a good one. Thank you to my scoring crew and my HS staff for all your help.

AT V SCENE Story and photos by Tami Gregg I’ll admit it, I thought summer would never get here... especially while I was bundled up like Nanook of the North and scrambling up the frozen tundra that was Red Bud earlier this season. While the wind whipped at my face and I contemplated death via hypothermia, I may have shouted a few unsavory words at Michigan’s version of Mother Nature. Now I’m not saying that my discord with her is to blame for such weather extremes on the last few race weekends, but given my history with karma’s swift action, it wouldn’t surprise me. Huge props to all of the racers, however, as you all seem to be taking it in stride as I’ve shivered, stumbled through mud, and cursed the heat. Despite the struggle to figure out who’s who out there, I love all the new graphics and gear! I especially love all the new faces to D14. For those of you just starting out... welcome to the family! And for those of you who are returning...welcome back!

We had a bit of a shaky start with Log Road and Dutch cancellations, but a few of you made your way to Red Bud to get some seat time at the end of April and froze right along with me. We convened on Portland in mid-May and despite the mudfest that ensued, it was great to see everyone. The results for that weekend are as follows: Chase Seeley took first in 16-29 class, while Trent Gordenski claimed first in the 30+ class. Chase also battled his way through the mud to victory in A class, followed by Mike Caron in second.

In B class, Blake Sykes prevailed with Ron Spindler in second, and Trent Gordenski in third. The C class victor was Jeremy Dunn, with Nolan Liszewski following in second, and Shawn O’Leary in third. The mud didn’t stop Leah Haapala, who claimed first for the women, followed by Makailey VanTiem in second and McKenna Sykes in third. Sway Day ruled the Quad 90 Mod class, while Landyn VanTiem took first in Quad 90 Production. In Quad 90 Limited, Ava Colbert was the champ and in Quad Schoolboy Jr, Christopher Lafata reigned as the winner. Mason Jackson and Landyn VanTiem battled in the Quad

Payton Day came out on top, followed by Gerry Bazzett in second and Gage Isham in third. In the Quad Youth Open class, Adyson Balsley was the winner. Coy VanTiem made his debut in the Quad 50 Limited Stock class and brought home a first place plaque.

Two weeks later, we had a fantastic turnout at Baja Acres despite the heat. Chase Seeley again stole first in the 16-29 class, followed by Andrew Hartwell in second, and Nolan Liszewski in third. In Quad 30+, Jacob Hill was the victor with Trevor Botkins following him in second, followed by Trent Gordenski in third. We added a Quad 40+ class to that weekend’s line up with Michael Biland Sr. grabbing first and Jamie Greenman taking second. Chase Seeley again claimed victory in A class, with Andrew Hartwell on his tail in second, and Chad Reed following in third. The ever-entertaining battle for first in B class went to Blake Sykes with Kirk Karem right behind him in second. Christopher Ice snagged a third place win in that class. Nolan Liszewski led the pack in C class with Shawn O’Leary in second and Jamie Greenman in

Finally, we traveled east to compete at Michigan Mafia MXC in mid-June and again dealt with blazing temps. Travis Kyle showed us how it’s done by claiming first in Quad 30+, followed by Christopher Ice in second and Trevor Botkins in third. Michael Snider Jr. grabbed a first place finish in the Quad 50+ class while Jace Plyley claimed an A class victory. In B class, Kirk Karem turned the tables and claimed first place, putting Blake Sykes in a close second, and Tyler Gregg followed them in third. Jacob Gilbert finished first among the C class riders, with Shawn O’Leary following in second, and Jeremy Dunn finishing third. 2018 Enduro/FES Chairman

After having no events in May, the series resumed with a return to Bentley, MI and clubgrounds of Valley Trail Riders. The club did a great job of laying out two loops – a 7 mile loop on the clubgrounds that provided a preview of the Sprint enduro and a second loop of 9 miles on the neighboring private property. The loop on the club property was ridden twice and after the three loops Fletcher Collins had a perfect score. We had 9 checks (3 known controls, 1 secret and 5 emergency checks) and Fletcher zeroed all of them and won the F class. Congratulations. A huge THANK YOU to all of the check crews who provided their support and expertise!

The Buddy class had some close competition and we had to use the tie breaker checks to determine the winner – Collin Illig and Adeline Francis was second. We did not have anybody in the 4-6 year old (B) class. I am open to suggestion on how to recruit the younger riders to these events.

Another competitor in the F class was John Paul Kube. He brought his family and friends to the event. If you needed to find John Paul or his dad while they on the clubgrounds, you had to listen for the cow bells ringing. His sister, Doni Kube, and her friend, Grace Cole, were walking around the staging area in costume (KTM gear and tu tus) and were ringing the bells (see photo). They were awarded with SPIRIT trophies for all of their efforts.

The H Class had 8 ladies competing and we had a couple of new entrants to the family enduros. At the end of the day they were tired, but everyone had a good time and enjoyed their time on the trail. I hope they continue to attend future FES events.

If the slower rider does not move over, it creates a “freight train” in the woods and that is not safe. At Matthews we had one check that had over 20 riders arrive at the same time. I was not at the check, but I can assume that a slower rider did not move over and was blocking the trail. Trail etiquette applies to all riders – those who need to pass and those that are being passed. Please be kind to your fellow riders.

Also, an enduro is a challenge for the rider and their bike to complete the entire course.

If a rider in injured or cannot complete the course, the scoring of that rider will end when they stop. If the rider has an issue with their bike – flat tire, engine malfunction or run out of gas – and cannot continue, the scoring of that riders also stops. Just to be clear, a rider cannot change bikes in the middle of the event and continue to be scored for the event. I understand the safety need to get a rider out of the woods, but the scoring of the does not continue if the rider and/or the rider cannot finish the event. Yes, we did have a couple of situations in recent events that were brought to my attention. Let me know if you have any questions.

The Vintage class is gaining interest. Alex Shull and Scott Diekman were in attendance riding their bikes with dual shocks, air cooled and drum brakes. We hope that this exhibition class continues to grow.

The 60+ (L) class had the most competition with only 9 points separating the top 7 riders. Old Guys rule!! There are some discussions about adding a new class for those riders who are older than 70 years. Yes, we may have enough for a new class. I am looking for a commitment of 5 riders to consistently show up at the FES events in order to have a class and provide trophies/points. Let me know if anyone has any questions about a new class.

Round # 3 had the Family Enduro Series returning to the Covered Bridge in Matthews, IN. Unfortunately, Mother Nature played some havoc on the course with a lot of rain the week before the event. The Muddobbers MC made the correct decision and moved the event to Sunday rather than Saturday. This decision did not have an impact on attendance as we had over 200 riders.

The club designed two separate loops that provided enough challenge for all riders.

The first loop was ridden at 12 mph and the riders under 9 years old had completed their ride at the end of this loop. Unfortunately, we only had 7 riders who rode the short course. On the long course, Adam Harner finished the day with the best score.

After 3 events we have nearly 20 riders who have perfect attendance and family has an impact. These riders are made up of brothers, fathers/sons/moms and the family of riders from Ohio. We will continue to keep attendance records.

You will hear this message at the riders meetings, but I also wanted to put it in print to provide reinforcement. I am hearing some complaints about trail etiquette. An enduro is NOT wheel to wheel competition. You do not need to “bump” a rider in order make a pass in the woods. You let them know you have caught them with a quick yell or rev

July 2018 – by Steven Beane • Antonio Cairoli hasn’t given up the MXGP fight yet, and Jeffery Herlings seems determined to allow the drama to continue.

Herlings broke a collarbone in a midweek practice crash which allowed the 222 to gain back 50 of the 62 point gap between the two KTM pilots, but with a week off it looks like Herlings will try to ride the next round in Indonesia in order to stop the losses.

• The black clouds that we said seem to be hovering over Bobby Hewitt’s Rockstar Husqvarna factory motocross effort opened up into a full on downpour. We already covered Dean Wilson and Jason Anderson getting knocked out in separate incidents at Glen Helen, but then Zach Osborne wrenched his shoulder out in first

turn crash at Thunder Valley. Osborne put the shoulder back in (arghhh!) himself, but will be out for the remainder of the season. Phil Nicoletti moves over for a fill-in ride from JGR Suzuki where his fill-in deal was coming to a close.

• Sherco teased their new bikes in a recently reviewed video, but we know for sure that their top of the line bikes will offer KYB forks in lieu of the WPs that have graced their front ends in recent years.

• One short month ago, I wrote “It looks like Jorge Lorenzo may be finally able to escape the hell that has been his experience racing for Ducati’s MotoGP team, if only because his dismal results mean they likely won’t renew his contract in 2019.” That was true. Since then however Lorenzo

scored two consecutive wins on the Ducati AND secured a contract with juggernaut Honda for the upcoming season as a result of calling the Japanese race effort personally.

• With Lorenzi headed to Honda, it looks like Dani Pedrosa will be the rider left out in the cold.

• Beta chose to lead off their 2019 line up last week with the introduction of a longanticipated 200cc two stroke. Based heavily on the new-for-2018 125RR, the smallmid-size off-roader will feature the same new forks and shock as the rest of the Beta line-up. Hardcore racers may want to wait for the introduction of the Race Edition models, but it would be uncharacteristic of the Italian manufacturer to release an RE in the same year as the RR. • Eli Tomac is not without challengers in the 450MX class, but his consistency has meant that only Marvin Musquin has been able to steal a moto victory away. Ken Roczen, Justin Barcia, and Musquin represent the strongest opposition to Tomac.

• If you have a chance to take a kid out riding, do it! I knew my son would be excited to ride his first real trials section, but his excitement was off the charts. My goal

was that he would learn skill before speed, but he decided to wick it up and crash on his first obstacle when he ignored my fatherly advice. The rest of the day went much better, and he can’t wait to go again.

• The idea of a vintage class in the Family Enduro Series bounced around for a couple years, but it took Al Shull and his friends to make it happen. Word has it that ten old dual-shocked/air-cooled/drumbraked took to a wet and nasty Matthews Indiana course on Sunday June 24th.

• How’s this for a statistic – Tony Bou added his 100th TrialGP win at the most recent event in Portugal, his 200th start. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that he has podiumed in 154 of those events. A consummate professional, look for Bou to add his 12th outdoor title to the 12 indoor titles he has already amassed.

He had some great style and even better battles in the tough conditions. He was in the mix with the newer bikes as he took the Vintage moto win. The gate dropped for moto two and it was Chad barely grabbing the holeshot over Matt then Ricky.

Gene was just ahead of Brad as their day long battle continued. Matt took over the lead and had his head down, trying not to duplicate moto one. He had pressure from Chad all moto long but held on for the moto win. Chad was a close second with Ricky back in third. They all finished the race tied on points for the overall on the day. With Matt going 3-1 for the overall against Chad’s 2-2 and Ricky’s 1-3 to round out the podium. Gene and Brad were close all race long as Gene lead most of the way. Brad made the last lap pass and led when it counted to take fourth for fourth overall with Gene taking fifth.

The Evo and Historic classes were once again in the second drop with Tommy taking another holeshot. Dean was off to a better start in second and just ahead of Kris, Mark and Derek. Tanner and Tom did start the race but all Tanner had to do was finish to earn his first overall. Kris quickly took over the lead from Tommy and again never looked back, as he went on to an easy 1-1 and the overall. Tommy had to keep looking ahead as he had Dean lurking in third for the entire moto. Tommy held on for second and second overall with Dean taking third. Derek followed Mark around for a few laps and then made the pass on the final lap to take fourth overall with Mark dropping back to fifth with his 3-5. John decided to sit out moto two and take sixth overall. Tom pushed Tanner all the way around and showed him some smooth lines on the old bike. Tanner took the win and his first Historic overall. Tom was happy for him as he finished second overall. Nick was out again with the Supermini class and went even faster than moto one. He once again had some good battles with the new bikes to take another Vintage moto win and overall.

We are heading back to the old Freelin MX which is now MXC on June 17th. Then we make our return trip to Twisted MX on July first. Then it’s almost a three week break for the racers to get ready for our first ever GP race t Polka Dots on July 21st. It will be a 22min to the white flag moto. It will be a one moto format and should make for some good racing. The

 Nick Michael continues to improve with every Schoolboy race we finish out our July Racing as we return to Dutch Sport Park on July 29th. For and other questions and info, please check out www.michiganvintagemotocross.com.

RETURN TO AN OLD FAVORITE AT MICHIGAN MAFIA MX

 Both Innovation starts were a fight between Tom Claerhout (726) and Kris Gillett (739) MICHIGAN MAFIA MC (Brown City, MI) | June 17, 2018 Story and photos by Steve Baginski We headed to one of my favorite old tracks on Father’s Day weekend June 17th.

I took a ride around and saw that the layout was the same with a few additions.

It had been a few years since we were at the old Freelin MX now called Michigan Mafia Motocross or MXC. It looked tilled up and wet but with the high temps and sunshine it didn’t look out of place. Some racers thought differently and decided to sit this one out. It was tough for practice and the first set of moto’s, but was like a new track for the second moto’s. There were once again some great battles and a safe Vintage only event with every class getting their own moto. I’m sure the issues will be addressed for our return trip in the fall.

The Historic class was out first with Tom Claerhout off to an unusually good start and the holeshot. James Gawne started

second with Kenny Green and Blake Argue finishing out the pack. Mike Mason was left trying to start his bike as the field took off. Tom took off and charged for a few laps and then put it on cruise control.

He went on to the moto win. James rode well to a lonely second with the fight for third. Kenny had the edge but made a few mistakes to allow Blake to close the gap.

Kenny recovered to hold on to third with Blake finishing fourth. Mike finally got his bike started but was a few laps down. He would get credited with a fifth place by the end of the race. Tom grabbed another holeshot in moto two but had Mike right on his rear wheel. James was a close third followed by Blake then Kenny. Mike took over the lead early and was out front for a few laps. Early on lap three, Mike was seen in the back off the track and checking his bike. Tom took over the lead as James took over second. Kenny and Blake

were in a close battle for the now fourth place. Tom cruised to an easy moto win and overall with Mike taking a DNF, dropping him to fifth overall. James rode well to a second for second overall with Blake closing the gap on Kenny. Blake was closer than ever as they were about to take the white flag. Blake jumped a little farther off the little single and went down. He almost saved it but hit the dirt. He was ok and was back on the bike in no time. He was off to try and catch Kenny but the gap was too much. Kenny took third for third overall as Blake finished a disappointing fourth for fourth overall.

The Evolution class was next with Dean Howard leading the way. Ken Argue and Joe Sangster were a close second followed

by John Korte, Jeff Doneth and Phillip Peyton. Mark Havalda, Dale Darling and Ron Delaney rounded out the field. Dean was

on the gas and trying to gap the pack for the first couple laps. Ken was keeping him honest as Joe held on to third. Dean started fading late in the race as his clutch was slipping. With one lap to go, Ken took the lead followed by Joe then Dean. John was still on the move and holding down fourth.

Mark was in fifth just ahead of Ron, Phillip, Dale and Jeff. Ken held strong to earn his first moto win with Joe in second as Dean maintained third after leading. John took fourth with a slight gap back to Mark and Ron. Phillip lost a little time on the last lap in seventh and finished just ahead of Dale.

Jeff was a little off pace and barely went a lap down to end his moto early in ninth.

Moto two saw Joe with get the holeshot followed by John and Ken. Joe was pulling away early as Ken moved into second by the start of lap two. John was back to second with Dean running fourth, back out but on a Honda this time, as his clutch

on his Suzuki was totally gone by the end of moto one. Ron had another slow start but was up to fifth by lap two just in front of Phillip and Dale. Mark started the second moto but was having some bike issues and wouldn’t complete the first lap.

Meanwhile Joe was out front and looking to be taking the moto win. As they came to get the white flag, it was Ken out front.

Joe did in fact have a bike issue and he was out in the back trying to get it going again. Ken would go on to take the moto win and his first 1-1. John rode hard to hold onto second for second overall with Dean

finishing a solid 3-3 for third. Ron had to ride smart to stay in fourth for fourth overall with Phillip rounding out the top five in the race for sixth overall. Dale was a close sixth to Phillip but his 8-6 was only good enough for seventh overall. Derek Michael was able to start moto two and took some time to learn the track and find his groove. He ended the moto in seventh for ninth overall. Joe finally figured out the problem was with a loose spark plug.

The Transition class was next on the track with Nathan Stephens edging out Matt Howard for the holeshot. Shawn Kish was a close third followed by Cody Mausolf, Eli Hovorka, Dan Duve and Gene Huntoon.

Lance Shelton made it out and was next followed by Brad Bolzman, Kenny Green and Kyle Kreger. Nathan continued to pull a small gap in the next few laps, with Matt not far behind in second. Dan made his way into the top three with Lance in fourth and Cody a top five. Shawn slipped back a few spots after a good start and was battling with Gene as Eli was having fun roosting Brad. Matt closed the gap a little by the end of the moto but it was Nathan with the win as Matt held on for second. Lance was on the gas from a slow start to take third on the final lap.

Dan fell back to fourth with Cody staying in the top five. Gene had to ride hard to stay ahead of Shawn for seventh. Brad had finally had enough of the roost from Eli and made the pass to take eighth. Eli took ninth with Kenny rounding out the top ten. Kyle was just caught towards the end of the last lap to go a lap down and finish eleventh. The second moto was a great one to watch from the start. Matt got the holeshot but had Nathan and Dan all over his rear fender. Matt was still out front as they started lap two as Dan was up to second. Lance made his way into third with Nathan dropping back to fourth with Gene in the top five. Shawn lost a few spots after a strong start and

was just ahead of Cody, Brad, Kenny and Kyle. There were even more passes as they were into lap three with Dan leading the way. Matt was a close second as Nathan made his way back around Lance for third. Gene was holding down fifth while Shawn and Cody were a close sixth and seventh. Brad was still holding tough with a little gap back to Kenny and Kyle. Dan, Matt and Nathan were all in the same corner as they were mid lap with the white flag waiving. Lance was only back a turn or two with Gene a little larger gap back to now Cody then Shawn. I raced over to the finish to catch the battle and was just in time to see Matt come around the last turn first. He went on to the moto win and the overall with Nathan only a few bike lengths back in second for second overall. Dan was then only a few bikes lengths behind Nathan as he crossed in third for third overall. Lance stayed within sight of the lead pack but had to settle for fourth as he swapped moto scores with Dan to take fourth overall. Gene and Cody also swapped moto scores with Gene earning fifth for fifth overall. Cody came across for sixth while Shawn cruised across the finish in seventh. Brad was able to take it a little easy on the last lap as he had a comfortable lead over Kenny to take eighth.

Kenny took ninth in the moto to take ninth overall as Kyle was a lap down to end early in tenth. Eli was unable to start moto two and ended the day in eleventh, even after his first moto ninth.

The Schoolboy class had their own moto as well and it was Nick Michael with the early lead. Blake Argue was a close second with Austin Poirier stalling it in the gate.

Nick held the lead for a few laps with Austin closing the gap. He was riding great and even had a little tip over. They were wheel to wheel for an entire lap then Austin made the pass on the white flag lap. Nick was still very close with Blake slipping back. Austin rode hard for the last half a lap and held on for the moto win with only a few second gap back to Nick. Blake came across in third as Alexis had a few falls of her own to take fourth. There was another great battle for the second Schoolboy moto.

Nick was in the lead first with the holeshot but Austin was off to a much better start and close second. Blake was back in third with Alexis in fourth. Nick was trying to pull away from Austin and it worked for a little as Austin made a few small mistakes and even hitting the dirt. Nick was smooth out front as Austin kept coming back all the while maintaining a small lead over Blake and Alexis. Then on lap three it was Austin out front with Nick a very close second. Blake was back just a bit in third as Alexis was about to go a lap down. Austin had the lead as they started lap four and rode great to hold on to the lead and earn the moto win and the overall. Nick fought hard and was close enough for any mistake from Austin, but that didn’t happen late in the race. Nick came across in second for second overall with Blake still close to the leaders in third. Alexis had a few more tip over’s and stalls but always got back up quickly and finished in fourth.

The Innovation racers were out last with Tom Claerhout and Kris Gillett fighting for the holeshot. Tom beat him out by a bike length and never looked back to take another moto win. Kris had a good ride and held on to second. Gene Huntoon started third and had a good race with Brad Bolzman. They were close but Brad was a new bike and was still getting comfortable on it. Gene would finish on the podium with Brad in fourth. New comer Ken Petkwitz started next to Mark Havalda and just ahead of Steve Adema and Rick Murphy.

Ken kept his head down and pulled a gap as he ran fifth. Steve and Rick were close as Mark slipped back just a bit with a bike that didn’t sound the best. Ken rounded out the top five with Steve taking sixth as the last rider on the lead lap. Rick was gaining confidence but was caught right at the end to go a lap down and stuck in seventh. Mark was also a lap down with his slowing bike to finish eighth. Second moto saw more of the same as moto

 Alexis Argue made her racing debut to a fourth in Schoolboy one with Tom and Kris bar to bar for the holeshot. Tom grabbed it again and once again, never looked back. He put in some great laps and took another moto win and the overall. Kris pushed for a few laps and then slowed just a bit to a good pace to take second and second overall. Gene started third right behind Tom and Kris and rode a great moto and kept Kris close.

He couldn’t quite close the gap and took the last step of the podium. Brad and Ken had a decent battle early but Brad pulled away mid race and held on to fourth with Ken rounding out the top five. Steve had a good start but faded a little late in the moto and was unfortunately put a lap down along with Rick. They would finish sixth and seventh on the day. Mark

also had a good start and looked to be in a battle with Steve and Ken early but had a bike issue in the middle rhythm section and couldn’t continue. He ended the moto early with a DNF dropping him back to eighth overall.

Next we head to Twisted MX on July 1st and then it’s a few week break before we head to Polka Dots MC for our first ever Vintage GP. That race will be on Saturday July 21st and will be another Vintage only event. Then we make our return to Dutch Sport Park on July 29th.
