[WEEK 8] 1 Openings: Doors & Windows [Door sketch & Traditional Door sketch, CHING] -­‐ Framing usually timber (hardwood), steel or aluminum -­‐ Maintenance needs to be considered -­‐ Curtain Walls: Composite of a wall and a window can be both.

Glass

Components: -­‐ Formers: Basic component, any material that can be heated and formed into glass (silica). -­‐ Fluxes: Help formers to heat at lower temperatures (soda ash, potash or lithium carbonate) -­‐ Stabilizers: Combined with the other two components to stop crumbling or dissolving. Float Glass: -­‐ (1959+): Molten glass is poured over tin. -­‐ Clear float: simple and cheap breaks into sharp pieces -­‐ Laminated: A plastic interlayer (PVB) is wedged in between the two panes to make it shatter resistant. -­‐ Tempered: Heated a second time to increase bending strength. Types of float glass: -­‐ Flat Glass: Sheets of glass -­‐ Shaped Glass: Curved blocks, channels tubes etc.
