City gets court interdict to clean Dunoon toilets PETER LUHANGA
A portable toilet provision and cleaning company contracted by the City of Cape Town has to be accompanied by law enforcement when going in to Dunoon informal settlements to clean and service communal toilets they’ve provided. The company, Sanitech, has been rejected by Dunoon informal settlement residents after it received a toilet servicing and cleaning contract from the City in July, taking over from previous contract holder Mshegu Toilet Hire. Residents have rejected Sanitech’s services since August, saying the company failed to do an acceptable job during a period when they were subcontracted by Mshegu. There have been numerous protests, including emptying buckets of faeces on the N7, but the City of Cape Town has remained committed to keeping Sanitech on for the length of their threeyear contract worth approximately R173m. On 23 September, mayco member for waste and sanitation, Xanthea Limberg, said the City obtained a court interdict to allow Sanitech to service the toilets according to their contract. Limberg said Sanitech is being accompanied by Law Enforcement to ensure the safety of their staff and resources in Dunoon.
