HOW HARNESSING AI

Can Be Successful Blueprint for Small Businesses

Over the last decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has transitioned from a futuristic concept to a mainstream phenomenon. ChatGPT’s rapid growth exemplifies this shift, reaching 100 million active users within just two months of its launch in November 2022, marking the fastest-growing application to date.

The generative AI market is forecasted to expand at a rate of 24.4% annually over the next seven years, potentially reaching $207 billion by 2030. However, despite its immense potential, many enterprises encounter hurdles when initiating generative AI projects, including budgetary constraints and data management issues, leading to hesitations about adopting the technology. Approximately half of surveyed IT leaders express that their organizations are not yet prepared for AI implementation, with full adaptation potentially taking over five years. To ensure responsible and ethical use of AI, especially concerning data privacy and content generation, businesses must navigate various challenges and concerns. This includes legal, security, and ethical considerations, as well as potential biases inherent in AI algorithms. Government regulations also play a crucial role, with the European Union proposing comprehensive AI laws, prompting business leaders to stay informed and compliant.

To incorporate AI, companies should address key questions safely and responsibly regarding internal development versus third-party vendors, compliance requirements, data security, and deployment protocols. Continuous learning and adaptation are essential, as AI technology evolves and regulatory landscapes shift.

Looking ahead, generative AI holds the promise of accelerating workforce transformation, increasing labor productivity, and driving revenue growth across industries. Personal digital assistants and conversational AI are poised to play significant roles, enhancing customer engagement, and streamlining processes. By leveraging AI to create a seamless total experience encompassing customer, employee, and product interactions, businesses can position themselves at the forefront of innovation and meet the evolving needs of their stakeholders.

Enhancing Your Skills to Excel in Today’s Job Market

ou’ve probably heard a lot about “the skills gap”-the disparity between the skills an employer expects their employees to have and an employee’s actual skills-and perhaps you even feel that you lack certain skills to advance in your own career.

The skills in demand of the workforce continue to evolve rapidly.

The 2023 LinkedIn Workplace Learning report indicates the skillsets for jobs are likely only going to continue increasing. Specifically, the report claimed skill sets for jobs have already changed by around 25% since 2015. By 2027, this number is expected to double.

The question is, how can working adults continue to acquire the skills they need to support their career goals?

Returning to the classroom can be an intimidating proposition. Between work, family and other obligations, going back to school may present many challenges to working adults. Fortunately, there are several ways you can make today’s technology, your life experience, your job and flexible educational opportunities work for you.

If you are thinking about furthering your education and skills to help advance in your career, here are some questions to consider:

What is your goal? Decide what type of education will help you achieve your goal: Do you need a specific program? Would a certificate suffice? Would a certain credential further your career? What type of program is most achievable, and where will you get the most support?

What type of program is best for working adults? If you plan to work full time while earning a degree or credential, look for an online or hybrid program with flexibility that offers support for working adults. Ask your employer for the time and flexibility you need to complete an education program.

Are you eligible for credit for prior learning (CPL)? If you have prior work or learning experience, research whether you are eligible for credit for prior learning. This could help give you a head start and make it quicker to get to the finish line. Will your employer support you? Many employers offer tuition assistance programs. Consider talking to your employer about what may be available to you and how furthering your education may help you advance in the organization.

Amid a rising expectation of skill levels for employees, it can be important to seek out continuing education opportunities-both inside and outside of a traditional classroom. Take advantage of flexible and affordable options to achieve your education goals. Utilizing some of the unique approaches listed above, such as online or hybrid learning, CPL, and tuition assistance programs, can make advancing your skills less intimidating and more attainable.

Business Owners Optimistic Amid Economic Improvement

What a difference a year makes. New research finds that small and mid-sized business owners are increasingly optimistic about economic conditions and the prospects for their own businesses.

According to PNC’s Spring 2024 Economic Outlook Survey, nearly 80% of business owners surveyed feel optimistic about conditions for their business over the next six months -- up from 60% a year ago.

This optimism likely stems from an improving outlook for the economy as inflation pressures and recession fears appear to be easing. A majority of those surveyed (55%) said they are highly optimistic about the national economy-- a dramatic increase from the 26% who felt that way in the spring of 2023. Even more (63%) said they are highly optimistic about their local economy -- more than double the reading from a year ago.

The uptick in optimism for the economy mirrors PNC’s revised outlook for 2024, which shifts away from a predicted recession to a forecast of slow growth. PNC chief economist Gus Faucher said he expects the Federal Reserve will begin cutting interest rates later this year as inflation continues to ease.

“Business owners continue to feel confident that good days are ahead,” Faucher

said. “This time around though, the economy is seen as a supporting factor to that optimism instead of a limitation.”

CALMING INFLATION

Easing inflation pressures are among the biggest factors reported in the survey. Last spring, 55% of respondents reported that they expected to raise prices in the ensuing six months-- that dropped to 47% this round. Similarly, 40% expect prices from suppliers to increase over the next six months. That’s down from 47% last spring.

Inflation overall has been gradually easing since a mid-2022 high of 9%-- its

highest level since the 1980s. By January 2024, inflation was reported at 3.1%, with continued easing projected in the months ahead. Still, inflation remains above its pre-pandemic pace and Faucher says more progress is needed before the Fed likely cuts rates later in 2024.

“We’ve come a long way from 2022, as supply chain issues driven by the pandemic have largely dissipated,” Faucher said. “But more progress will probably be necessary before we can expect the Fed to start easing rates.”

LABOR CHALLENGES EASING

One such challenge has been the tight

labor market, which has made hiring difficult for business leaders. Consistent with PNC’s Fall 2023 survey, respondents say the lack of overall applicants remains their primary hiring issue. Respondents cited lack of experience (22%) and high salary/benefit and flexibility requirements (9%) as other barriers.

The nationwide unemployment rate for January 2024 was 3.7%-- below what is considered “full employment” in the U.S. economy. Faucher said he expects the shortage of available labor to ease as consumer demand softens and the effect of slower job growth across the economy becomes more visible.

Despite the trend across the broader U.S. landscape, few survey respondents anticipate workforce reductions over the next six months. Only 4% report anticipating a reduction, while 74% expect no change to their workforce numbers and 21% project an increase in their workforce over the next half of the year.

“Employers have been under pressure despite the improving conditions because the economy has been at or near full employment for an extended period,” Faucher said. “We expect some slack in the labor market in the coming months, which will likely further ease inflation.”

Act Locally During Global Volunteer Month

April is Global Volunteer Month, a time to celebrate volunteers and inspire volunteerism in communities large and small. Volunteerism is on the decline, according to research from AmeriCorps and the U.S. Census Bureau. And what’s more, Points of Light, a global nonprofit dedicated to inspiring, equipping and mobilizing people to take action that changes the world, shared that 73% of people believe that volunteering is more important than ever, yet 66% think they can’t make a big impact in their communities. During Global Volunteer Month, advocates are trying to change that perception at the local level.

“Volunteers are crucial to solving pressing challenges, creating vibrant communities and strengthening our social fabric,” said Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO of Points of Light. “Every person has something to share or give.”

To boost volunteer engagement during Global Volunteer Month, Points of Light is sharing the following ways you and your family can make a positive impact in your neighborhood or town:

SPREAD THE WORD: Use the Global Volunteer Month toolkit, along with the hashtag #GlobalVolunteerMonth to thank volunteers. Be sure to tag a volunteer whose impact you appreciate. Take the pledge: To show your commitment to volunteering, take Points of Light’s pledge. Then, discover ways to get involved that support your favorite cause and availability using Points of Light Engage, a database featuring hundreds of thousands of volunteer opportunities worldwide, including some in your area. Remember that volunteering doesn’t have to be through a formal organization. Lending a helping hand to a friend, family member or neighbor counts, too. In fact, 70% of volunteer work is carried out locally and informally, without the involvement of any organization, according to the UN. Expand your impact: Learn about the Points of Light Civic Circle®, a framework that outlines the many forms of civic engagement. These actions include listening and learning, using one’s voice, social entrepreneurship, volunteering, public, national or military service, using one’s purchasing power to express values, working, voting and donating.

Get inspired: Points of Light recognizes ordinary people doing extraordinary things to strengthen communities and

solve persistent problems with its Daily Point of Light Award. Know an outstanding volunteer in your community? Nominate them as a Daily Point of Light by visiting pointsoflight.org/ dailypointoflight, or to inspire others, share these stories of recent honorees:

Daily Point of Light Award honoree T’Kiyah Threatt is a 21-year-old from Uniontown, Alabama, a town of just over 2,000 residents. She dove into service as a high school junior when she started working with C.H.O.I.C.E., an organization that ensures young people get needed resources. Three years ago, she became the first president of the Youth Advisory Council and began leading mentoring efforts, going above and beyond to find funds for a scholarship for a deserving mentee. Even after moving away for college, Threatt

returns to work with her own mentee while recruiting community partners and soliciting funding for programs.

Daily Point of Light Award honoree Teresa Gerald of Ridgeland, Mississippi, channels her passion for literacy into volunteer work through Friends of the Ridgeland Library, where she has held the elected position of president since 2014, contributing thousands of volunteer hours. Twice a year, Gerald manages, promotes and works the Friends of the Ridgeland Library Book Sale. When the library’s funding was cut by $110,000 in fiscal year 2021-2022, her fundraising efforts with Every Library Institute raised $112,000 in emergency funds. No matter the scale, Points of Light recognizes the spirit of volunteerism as a driving force of change around the world.

“We’re celebrating volunteers around the world all month long, as well as calling on people to take action. Throughout April, lend your time, talent and passion to a cause you care about and invite others to join you, creating a ripple effect of change,” said Sirangelo.

Transforming Awareness in Action: Building Bridges of Support and Understanding

April marks a pivotal moment in our collective consciousness: Sexual Assault Awareness Month. As we navigate this period, it becomes crucial for us to confront the global plague of sexual assault (SA) headon. Its dangerous reach across continents, cultures, and communities is ripe with demands for a united front in education, prevention, and advocacy. Awareness is the first step. In order to transform that awareness into action, we must build a bridge of support and understanding around this topic.

Understanding sexual assault begins with the identification of red flags within relationships. These often manifest in emotional behaviors— extreme jealousy, possessiveness, and a propensity for unpredictability. Behavioral indicators include a disregard for personal boundaries and undeniable aggression. Communication patterns filled with constant criticism or gaslighting also serve as crucial indicators. Awareness and education about these warning signs are fundamental in safeguarding individuals from potential abuse.

To foster a culture of safety and respect, educational initiatives that teach the im portance of recognizing and respond ing to these red flags are paramount. Equally important are community support systems that provide resources and assistance for individuals navigating potentially harmful relationships, acting as a crucial safety net. These efforts con tribute to a broader strategy of prevention and support, emphasizing the collective responsibility to combat sexual assault while affirming the dignity and worth of every individual, irrespective of their ability to detect warning signs.

The discourse on SA often overlooks

the vulnerabilities faced by marginalized groups, including racial minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities. These communities encounter heightened barriers in reporting SA and seeking justice, necessitating a more inclusive approach in all aspects of support. The development of tailored support services that cater to those unique needs would ensure equitable access to justice and support for all survivors. Education is a cornerstone in the battle against SA. Initiating discussions around consent and healthy relationships from a young age lays a foundation for respect and understanding. Continuing these discussions into adulthood is crucial as societal norms and understandings of consent continue to evolve. This lifelong learning approach ensures that individuals recognize warning signs and understand how to foster safe environments. It’s a testament to the power of education in shaping a society that values respect and dignity above all.

health care for survivors. Recovery and resilience in the aftermath of SA rest upon the availability of comprehensive mental health services. Many go without adequate mental health care due to cultural upbringing or a lack of access to mental healthcare. Expanding mental health services and resources dedicated to SA survivors, alongside campaigns to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage survivors to seek help, are vital measures for aiding recovery.

Expanding mental health services and resources dedicated to SA survivors, coupled with campaigns and conversations to destigmatize mental health issues, and encourage survivors to seek help, are helpful measures that can aid in recovery. Advocacy for legal reforms that simplify the judicial process for SA cases and protect survivors from re-victimization, as well as the development of legal aid services that provide guidance and support to survivors navigating the justice system, are necessary solutions.

understanding and help they deserve, fostering a more inclusive conversation on this issue.

Harnessing technology and leveraging social media platforms for spreading awareness and fostering communities of support represents an important strategy. Additionally, developing technological solutions to protect individuals from online harassment and abuse is crucial. At the heart of combating SA is the advocacy for affirmative consent in all relationships—a standard that emphasizes respect, healthy communication, and clear boundaries. These principles ensure that our relationships are safe and fulfilling, building a society that respects the dignity and safety of every individual.

When discussing sexual assault, it’s imperative to navigate the topic with understanding and sensitivity, recognizing the various terms that describe its different aspects. This nuanced approach helps us address the issue more accurately and respectfully, ensuring we’re conscious of the impact our words can have on survivors and the broader conversation. As we dedicate this month to raising awareness about SA, let’s translate awareness into tangible actions that champion education, provide support, and drive systemic change. Through concerted effort and unwavering commitment, we can forge a path to a world where the dignity and safety of every individual are beyond compromise.

HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge Announces Retirement

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge, a former Congressional Black Caucus Chair and a staunch advocate for the Black Press of America, has announced that she’s stepping down from her role in the Biden-Harris administration.

Fudge’s last day in office was March 22. After decades of public service, she returned to her home state of Ohio.

Fudge, the second Black woman to lead HUD, has been a key figure in steering

the agency through housing crises triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also pushed for the federal government to include the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), on behalf of the Black Press of America, in its advertising spend.

“The NNPA salutes and forthrightly acknowledges the leadership, service, and commitment of the Honorable Marcia L. Fudge as the accomplished Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD),” said NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. “The Black Press of America expresses our gratitude to Secretary Fudge in particular for helping tens of thousands of underserved Americans to increase their

opportunities to become homeowners.” Fudge’s departure came amid the intensifying campaign season, with President Joe Biden facing off against the twice-impeached and four-times indicted Republican former President Donald Trump.

“It is not a red or blue issue,” Fudge declared. “Everybody knows that it is an issue, so it’s not one-sided. It’s an American issue.”

Despite her efforts to enhance HUD’s role in supporting families with housing needs, addressing homelessness, and fostering economic development, Fudge expressed concerns about inadequate funding. She highlighted the need for more than $70 billion to address the demand for affordable housing and repair aging public housing developments.

President Biden echoed Fudge’s call for bipartisan attention to affordable housing in a statement: “A fair housing market and access to quality and affordable housing are critical to the fulfillment of the American dream, and no one understands that better than Secretary Marcia L. Fudge,” Biden said.

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Steven Horsford (D-Nevada) and other Caucus members praised Fudge’s leadership and decades of service.

“Since her confirmation in March of 2021, Secretary Fudge has worked tirelessly to provide access to safe and affordable housing to millions of American families, with a particular focus on racial equity and addressing the gap in Black homeownership,” the CBC’s statement read. “Under her leadership, the agency has supported nearly a quarter of a million Black people

Tin purchasing a home and has taken significant steps to root out racial bias in the home appraisal process. She leaves her mark on the agency as a passionate leader, the first African American woman to lead the department in decades, and only the second in our nation’s history.” Biden praised Fudge’s leadership, her dedication to rebuilding HUD, and her expanding efforts to build generational wealth through homeownership. He expressed gratitude for her contributions and wished her well in her next chapter as she transitions from public service to private life.

“Under Marcia’s transformational leadership, we have worked hard to lower housing costs and increase supply,” Biden asserted. “We’ve proposed the largest investment in affordable housing in U.S. history. We’ve taken steps to aggressively combat racial discrimination in housing by ensuring home appraisals are more fair and by strengthening programs to redress the negative impacts of redlining. Thanks to Secretary Fudge, we’ve helped first-time homebuyers, and we are working to cut the cost of renting. And there are more housing units under construction right now than at any time in the last 50 years.” For her part, Fudge said she’s simply done with politics.

“Don’t look for me to ever be on another ballot or another appointee or anything like that,” she insisted. “I really do look forward to being a private citizen.”

TSU Aviation Teams Up with Air Force JROTC for 4th Annual Flight Program

he United States Air Force has selected Texas Southern University as a host site for its national program for aspiring pilots for the fourth year. The High School and Air Force Academy students are selected from thousands of applicants around the United States. Students are selected for this program based on grades, physical fitness, and an application exam.

TSU’s Aviation Science Management Program facilitates this seven-week intensive flight training program as part of a contract with the Air Force.

“Partnerships with the United States Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard are important measures to the steady growth of our program

on a national stage,” said Dr. Terence H. Fontaine, Executive Director of Aviation.

“ We are a proud partner and wish the 2024 class of Air Force JROTC cadets good luck and favorable winds.”

Cadets receive instruction from TSU’s certified ground and flight instructors, prepare for licensing exams, practice flights in Redbird simulators and fly a few of TSU’s nine planes at Ellington Airport.

“It is with great excitement that we enter into the fourth year of this partnership with the Air Force,” said Dr. Mary Evans

Sias, Texas Southern University interim president. “Their return to TSU year after year is a testament to the quality instruction cadets receive while they’re on our campus and the success they have in achieving the goals they come here to achieve. We look forward to welcoming this next class of JROTC cadets to Tigerland this summer.”

In 2023, 100% of cadets passed their FAA written exam and all cadets who tested for their Private Pilot License passed and received their FAA Private Pilot License.

The program runs from late-May to mid-July.

Ramona Edelin, ACTIVIST WHO African American dies POPULARIZED term

nce upon a time, Black Americans were simply known as colored people, or negroes. That is until Ramona Edelin came along. The activist, renowned for her pivotal roles in advancing civil rights, education reform, and community empowerment, died at her D.C. residence in February at the age of 78. Her death, finally confirmed this week by Barnaby Towns, a communications strategist who collaborated with Dr. Edelin, was attributed to cancer.

Born on Sept. 4, 1945, in Los Angeles, California, Edelin’s early years were marked by a commitment to education and social justice. According to her HistoryMakers biography, after graduating from Fisk University with a bachelor’s degree in 1967, she pursued further studies at the University of East Anglia in England. She earned her master’s degree before completing her Ph.D. at Boston University in 1981. Edelin’s contributions to academia and activism were manifold. She was pivotal in popularizing the term “African American” alongside Rev. Jesse L. Jackson in the late 1980s.

Jackson had announced the preference for “African American,” speaking for summit organizers that included Dr. Edelin.

“Just as we were called colored, but were not that, and then negro, but not that, to be called Black is just as baseless,” he said, adding that “African American” “has cultural integrity” and “puts us in our proper historical context.”

Later, Edelin told Ebony magazine, “Calling ourselves African Americans is the first step in the cultural offensive,” while linking the name change to a “cultural renaissance” in which Black Americans reconnected with their history and heritage.

“Who are we if we don’t acknowledge our motherland?” she asked later. “When a child in a ghetto calls himself African American, immediately he’s international. You’ve taken him from the ghetto and put him on the globe.”

The HistoryMakers bio noted that Edelin’s academic pursuits led her to found and chair the Department of African American Studies at Northeastern University, where she established herself as a leading voice.

Transitioning from academia to advocacy, Edelin joined the National Urban Coalition in 1977, eventually ascending to president and CEO. During her tenure, she spearheaded initiatives such as the “Say Yes to a Youngster’s Future” program, which provided crucial support in math, science, and technology to youth and teachers of color in urban areas. Her biography noted that Edelin’s efforts extended nationwide through partnerships with organizations like the National Science Foundation and the United States Department of Education.

President Bill Clinton recognized Edelin’s expertise by appointing her to the Presidential Board on Historically Black Colleges and Universities in 1998. She also co-founded and served as treasurer of the Black Leadership Forum, solidifying her standing as a respected leader in African American communities. Beyond her professional achievements, Edelin dedicated herself to numerous boards and committees, including chairing the District of Columbia Educational Goals 2000 Panel and contributing to the Federal Advisory Committee for the Black Community Crusade for Children.

Throughout her life, Edelin received widespread recognition for her contributions. Ebony magazine honored her as one of the 100 Most Influential Black Americans, and she received prestigious awards such as the Southern Christian Leadership Award for Progressive Leadership and the IBM Community Executive Program Award.

Houston Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles met with principals last month to discuss the budget planning process for the upcoming school year.

Miles said HISD is facing a challenging financial picture but will take steps necessary to fund its most urgent priorities. These include boosting achievement among all students, improving underperforming schools, delivering high-quality special education services, and preserving unique school options such as the district’s robust magnet programs. Superintendent Miles also again pledged that he will not close schools in the 2024-2025 school year.

Approximately $1.2 billion in federal COVID relief aid provided to the district over the past three years will end this academic year and there is no projected increase in state funding for education. While the previous administration projected the district would be facing a fiscal cliff, absent any significant changes, by the end of the 2024-2025 school year, Miles is developing a budget proposal that keeps resources focused on students. It also maintains a fund balance of approximately $800 to $850 million.

“HISD’s budget must reflect our most urgent priorities,” Superintendent Miles said. “As we reduce expenditures and allocate our resources, we’ve developed a set of principles to guide our investments. We will keep cuts as far away from the classroom as possible and will invest in our teachers and school leaders. This is critical to support student success.”

Budgets for New Education System (NES) schools are set by the district, while principals of non-NES schools create budgets for their campuses. These spending plans are based on funds tied to a school’s enrollment and average daily attendance rates.

HISD Prioritizes Student Needs in 2024-2025 Budget Planning

The district says for the first time in three years, schools will not be held harmless on enrollment or attendance. In previous budget cycles, if a school’s enrollment declined or its average daily attendance decreased, it reportedly received a budget allocation from the district as if the school had not experienced a decrease in enrollment or attendance. Given that the state allocation does not hold the district harmless for these decreases, HISD can no longer afford to give schools money for students they do not serve. Budgets for this coming school year will reflect this reality. Some campuses will see a reduction in funding. HISD, however, will cap any loss at 12%, district officials say. Without this cap, one campus, for example, would lose 43% of its funding.

The board of managers will vote on the budget proposal at its June meeting.

The phrase “ONE MONKEY DON’T STOP NO SHOW” is essentially the African American equivalent of “the show must go on.” It embodies the resilience and determination to persevere despite obstacles or setbacks. It suggests that amidst the daily challenges and endeavors, individuals should remain undeterred by any hindrance or setback, and instead, persist in their pursuit of progress and success.

THE SUPERINTENDENT ALSO PLEDGED TO:

• Prioritize funding for initiatives that narrow achievement gaps and help meet the school board’s adopted goals.

• Continue to cut waste at the central office.

• Make no cuts to funding that supports small and/or unique schools. He said magnet funding would be provided at the same or greater levels than the current year. In addition, the high school allotment and smallschool subsidy would be unchanged from the current year.

Set These 1 DoctorRecomme nde d Health Goals

s it time to hit the reset button on your health and wellness? Not sure where to start? Doctors say you can make the biggest impact with small, incremental tweaks to your routine.

“It is quite common to set big-picture, ambitious health goals,” says Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., MPH, president of the American Medical Association (AMA). “But the good news is you don’t have to make major changes in one fell swoop; small, positive health choices made right now can have long-lasting effects.”

Want to get started today? Here are the 10 goals the AMA recommends top your list:

1. Get moving. Exercise is essential for your physical and mental health. The American Heart Association recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity. Just can’t get to the gym? No problem: start off by going for a family walk, taking the stairs at work or parking a little farther away.

2. Tweak your diet to include more water and less sugar-sweetened beverages. Replace processed foods -- especially those with added sodium and sugar -- with nutritious, whole foods. Stock your fridge and pantry with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, low-fat dairy products, and lean meats and poultry.

3. A number of respiratory viruses circulating this winter can be serious and even life-threatening. Get up to date on your vaccines to protect yourself and your family. These include the annual flu shot and the updated COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. Vaccines are also available to protect older adults from severe RSV. New tools to protect infants during RSV season include maternal vaccination and monoclonal antibody immunization. If you have questions, speak with your physician and review trusted resources, including getvaccineanswers.org.

4. Get screened. Estimates based on statistical models show that since April 2020, millions of screenings for breast, colorectal and prostate cancer may have been missed due to pandemic-related care disruptions. Check in with your physician. If you’re due for preventive care, tests or screenings, make an appointment. These measures are designed to keep you healthy and help your doctor spot certain conditions before they become more serious.

5. High blood pressure, often referred to as hypertension, can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke, and it affects millions of Americans. Visit ManageYourBP.org to understand what your blood pressure numbers mean and what you can do to get your blood pressure under control.

6. One in three American adults has prediabetes, a condition that can lead to type 2 diabetes if left unmanaged. However, healthy eating and exercise can help delay or even prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Learn your risk by taking a simple 2-minute self-screening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org. This resource also features helpful lifestyle tips that can help you reverse prediabetes.

7. If consuming alcohol, drink only in moderation. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans defines that as up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

8. Your health care provider can offer resources and guidance for quitting tobacco and nicotine. Declare your home and car smoke-free to eliminate second-hand smoke exposure.

9. Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking prescription drugs – especially opioids. Always store and dispose of medications safely to prevent misuse. Whenever prescribed antibiotics, take them exactly as directed. Not taking the full course can lead to antibiotic resistance, a serious public health problem, and will not make you feel better if you have a virus, such as a cold or flu.

10. Good mental health is part of good overall health. Manage your stress, get sufficient sleep, exercise and seek help from a mental health professional when you need it. For a healthier you, invest in your wellness with these doctor-recommended goals.

Empowering Minority Communities Against Vein Disease

Vein disease, often overlooked in discussions of healthcare disparities, affects individuals across diverse backgrounds. However, within minority communities, there exists a pressing need to address potential gaps in awareness and access to care. This article delves into the symptoms and clinical presentation of vein disease while advocating for proactive health management strategies tailored to minority populations.

Vein disease manifests through an array of symptoms, including leg pain, swelling, varicose veins, tenderness, and fatigue. These symptoms can escalate if left untreated, significantly diminishing one’s quality of life. Moreover, some individuals may not exhibit overt symptoms, underscoring the importance of comprehensive evaluations by healthcare professionals.

At the forefront of addressing healthcare disparities is Reincke Vein Center, located in Sugar Land. Here, a commitment to inclusivity is evident through initiatives like free consultations for new patients and thorough reviews of health insurance benefits before office visits. Additionally, flexible payment plans and self-pay options aim to mitigate financial barriers to care. Effective communication plays a pivotal role in ensuring equitable healthcare access. Dr. Tonie Reincke, founder of the center, emphasizes personalized care, dedicating time to educate patients about their condition and address any concerns. Moreover, the center boasts a diverse staff proficient in languages commonly spoken by minority communities, facilitating seamless communication and understanding.

Language barriers often exacerbate healthcare disparities. However, Reincke Vein Center’s bilingual staff, fluent in Spanish and Vietnamese, ensures that patients can articulate their symptoms accurately and comprehend treatment options in their native language. This linguistic inclusivity enhances patient-provider interactions, fostering trust and engagement in healthcare decision-making. Beyond individualized care, community outreach and education are integral components of addressing healthcare disparities. Reincke Vein Center actively participates in health fairs, offering free ultrasound scans and disseminating vital information about vein disease. Furthermore, strategic advertising on Spanish and Vietnamese television channels expands outreach efforts, reaching underserved populations directly.

In conclusion, early recognition of vein disease symptoms is imperative for optimal health outcomes, particularly within minority communities where disparities in healthcare access persist. By prioritizing cultural competence, improving health literacy, and dismantling barriers to care, we can create an inclusive healthcare environment where timely diagnosis and treatment are accessible to all. Reincke Vein Center’s unwavering commitment to equitable care exemplifies the broader healthcare community’s efforts to bridge disparities and ensure every individual receives the care they deserve, regardless of background or ethnicity.

Medicaid & CHIP Coverage TEXAS EXTENDS POSTPARTUM

exas mothers are now eligible for Medicaid, or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), will be able to get postpartum coverage up to a year after childbirth.

TMedicaid covers half of Texas births, but previously coverage expired two months postpartum. Last year, Abbott signed House Bill 12 into law, expanding Medicaid and CHIP postpartum coverage. The extension request was approved last month by the Federal Centers for Medicaid and Medicare services.

The State of Texas predicts approximately 137,000 women will benefit from 12-month postpartum coverage in 2025.

“Working with partners in the Texas Legislature last year—including Senator Lois Kolkhorst and Representative Toni Rose—we delivered critical bipartisan legislation to extend postpartum coverage for Texas mothers from two months to one year,” Abbott detailed in a press release. “By extending postpartum Medicaid and CHIP coverage, we will help ensure new mothers and the most vulnerable young Texans receive critical healthcare resources they need to care for their families and thrive.”

Health experts say postpartum care is crucial for mothers recovering after childbirth. Dr. McClain Sampson is a Fellow of Maternal and Reproductive health at the Baker Institute for Public Policy and an Associate Professor at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. She said the extension will address a critical part of early motherhood. “This is really good news,” she said. “The postpartum period, which is considered from right after childbirth, all the way up to 12 months postpartum, a lot of important health things need to be monitored.”

Sampson said medical conditions like postpartum depression can occur from as early as four weeks to 12 months postpartum and lead to postpartum anxiety

and perinatal mood disorders. She said there’s also other health issues that a mother can endure.

“If someone had high blood pressure during pregnancy, she really needs to be made aware of her high blood pressure after pregnancy, “she said. “Also, if somebody went into pregnancy with gestational diabetes, how is that diabetes being treated at two months postpartum, 6 months, 12 months. It’s an important time of health and mental health vulnerability and having insurance coverage for 12 months could possibly really have a significant positive effect for.”

CHIP and Medicaid recipients who were already enrolled into the program while pregnant will have their coverage automatically reinstated for the remainder of their 12-month postpartum period, if they still live in Texas. Women who transitioned from Medicaid or CHIP to Healthy Texas Women after their pregnancy ended and are still within their postpartum period will be transitioned back to full coverage for the remainder of the period.

Sampson said many women do not enroll in Medicaid until their second or third trimester for various reasons like the length of enrollment or lack of providers compared to women with private insurance. Texas, like many other states, has a high mortality rate, and it’s the highest among African American women.

“With Medicaid, we have a huge shortage of Medicaid providers, especially in this maternal health space,”

said Sampson. “Even though one in two births are financed by Medicaid, that doesn’t mean we have enough providers to see the share of the volume of women who are on Medicaid. So that’s one reason that it takes some women a long time to get on to Medicaid, because the enrollment process may take one week up to two months.”

Texas is joining other states and the District of Columbia by extending coverage, a years-long fight. “We are not valuing the health of the woman,” said Sampson. “I really think it’s a matter of value. If we truly valued a woman’s health during pregnancy and postpartum again, these are highly vulnerable times for mental health and physical health issues. Then we would have policies that protect women during these time periods, we would have insurance that is not burdensome to enroll in, we would have enough providers to see people who are on Medicaid and wouldn’t have only one in four women on insurance.”

Sampson recommends women check with their local state Medicaid office to confirm their extended coverage. She said Houston has a local nonprofit called Civic Heart, that helps residents enroll in Medicaid. She works with the nonprofit as well as being the principal Investigator of the Healthy Start Program at UH. “Extending postpartum coverage will help new mothers access needed healthcare services,” said HHS Executive Commissioner Cecile Erwin Young in a press release. “HHSC is proud to continue supporting Texas families.”

Medicaid and CHIP offer several medical services, including:

• Regular medical checkups

• Prescription drugs and vaccines

• Hospital care and services

• X-rays and lab tests

• Vision and hearing care

• Access to medical specialists and mental health care

HHEALTH, WELLNESS & THE BLACK FAMILY: The Links Address Health Disparities at

Expo

ealth among Black families is influenced by various factors, including socioeconomic status, access to health care, systemic racism and cultural attitudes toward health. Addressing disparities requires a multifaceted approach that tackles several barriers in order to promote health education and address social determinants of health. The Links, Incorporated has created community-based initiatives aimed at reducing inequality that can contribute to improving overall health outcomes for Black families.

The organization launched and hosted its second annual Black Family Wellness Expo on Saturday, March 16 at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church to share valuable information that can help everyone — from infants to seniors — live healthier lives. This year’s event featured panelists, fireside breakout sessions, food trucks, kid stations and community collaborative sponsors at the local, regional and national levels.

This year’s multi-city events were built upon the organization’s successful inaugural launch last year. While the organization has worked to battle health disparities in the communities where its members have served for decades, March 2023 was the first time that chapters, including those in the Houston area, and Links members worked on the same day coast to coast to address many health disparities and celebrate general wellness in a one-day event within their communities and nationwide.

“This occasion, all chapters in the Houston area, as far east as Beaumont, Texas, we’ve come together to make sure we can educate the Black community and our focus today is the community of African descent,” said Lorraine Winslow, president of the Houston Chapter of The Links, Inc. “As we hear many times on the news about the health disparities in the African American community, we want to raise the awareness about mental health, physical health, diet, and exercise. We’ve had over 66 exhibitors come in today to share their information because we want us to recognize that it’s what we eat, it’s what we drink, it’s our exercise. It’s not just kidney disease. It’s maternal health, it’s housing. it’s jobs. Today, we have representatives from across the Houston area who really have shared the information in all aspects of those types of critical matters.”

In addition to educating communities of African descent about the numerous health disparities impacting them, this year, The Links expanded its efforts to include information related to financial wellness and voter registration and education to ensure communities are equipped and empowered to make informed decisions impacting them at the national, state and local levels.

STARTLING STATISTICS REVEAL THAT:

• Heart disease is the number one killer for all Americans and stroke is also a leading cause of death. The risks for both heart disease and stroke are even higher for Black Americans because they have higher incidences of high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity which are contributing factors (American Heart Association).

• Black Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial or ethnic group in the United States when it comes to most types of cancer (American Cancer Society).

• Black Americans between the ages of 1849 are two times as likely to die from heart disease than whites (CDC).

• Black Americans are more than three times as likely as whites to have kidney failure. In addition, the increased rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and heart disease in Black Americans also increase their risk of kidney disease (National Kidney Foundation).

• Blacks are more likely to have Alzheimer’s disease than whites and have a higher familial risk than other groups (Alzheimer’s Association).

• Over 70% of Black Americans die without having a will or other estate planning document in place.

“Getting Black Americans and other people of African descent to advocate for their own health care and financial well-being is more important than ever. And working together, we can change these statistics,” a news release from the organization stated. “Education and information are key to empowering Blacks to fight for their own wellness and the wellness of the communities in which they live, work and play. The right to vote is a critical part of our society, as is educating voters about the issues that matter in their communities. To that end, voter registration and non-partisan voter education are among our core priorities as an organization.”

ABOUT THE LINKS, INCORPORATED

The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-forprofit corporation established in 1946. The membership consists of more than 17,000 professional women of African descent in 299 chapters located in 41 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and the United Kingdom. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.

uring a conversation with the Winners Circle Group of Texas, Mack Montgomery, and Reggie Barnes, opened up about their childhood experiences and how it cultivated their pathway to not only being business owners but how to be better men throughout their adulthood.

DRaised by single parents, the winning duo openly admitted that while the two-parent nuclear structure of family ties was not a familial construct for them, building a better brand as healthier men was a no-brainer. When asked about how fostering personal development in men can help them become worthy successors in business, Montgomery replied, “My children see me as their superhero, just like many children view their dads. They see me as the strongest and smartest person in the world.” He continued, “The advice they receive from me is like [the] law to them, akin to the Bible. This is something we strive for as parents, especially in a time when father figures are often absent. Unfortunately, many fathers prioritize other activities over spending time with their kids.”

Statistics from Kauffman Indicators of Entrepreneurship indicted that Black entrepreneurship has been on a rise among Black men in most recent years. However, research has shown that some children raised in single-parent households, regardless of race, may face additional challenges, compared to those raised in two-parent households. While the research didn’t display how that affects business acumen, it did determine that career ambition can be crafted based on how a household is run. These challenges can include economic instability, lack of access to resources, and limited parental time and

supervision. Nonetheless, resilience and determination can also emerge from overcoming these obstacles, which can be valuable traits for entrepreneurship.

Barnes detailed how mentorship had to become a frontrunner in cultivating his leadership skills, having a similar experience as his partner.

“It’s crucial that we instil confidence and self-esteem in young Black boys from an early age, ideally from zero to 8 years old. Research has shown that this period is pivotal in shaping a child’s development and without proper support, they may struggle later in life,” Barnes explained. “We must move beyond societal stereotypes that suggest success for Black men is limited to careers in entertainment, sports, or music. By providing diverse role models and encouraging exploration of various career paths, we can empower young black men to realize their potential and pursue success in any field they choose.”

Even in pop culture, we’ve seen public resilience of men stepping up to raise new leaders with confidence, such as newly signed Pittsburgh Steelers QB Russell Wilson, whom Barnes admires. “[Wilson] got belittled on national television, not just in the league but with his personal decisions.” He continued, “That told me something about Wilson right then and there. I said, ‘Man, the next team that he goes to, I’m going to be cheering for that team 1,000%.’ He has shown the world how you

can start early, create a nurturing environment befitting for a leader.”

In a world where opportunities are abundant, yet disparities persist, the role of Black fathers in nurturing the next generation of Black business leaders cannot be overstated. The journey toward success for young Black men often comes with unique challenges and obstacles.

However, with the guidance, support, and mentorship of their fathers, these young men can navigate these challenges and emerge as confident, capable, and visionary leaders in the business world. The Winners Circle Group of Texas focused on the crucial role that Black fathers play in grooming their Black sons for business leadership. They emphasized mentorship, instilling values, nurturing resilience, and offering growth opportunities as key factors.

“My children see me as their superhero, just like many children view their dads. They see me as the strongest and smartest person in the world.” - Mack Montgomery, Jr.

The Winners Circle Group of Texas:

LEADING THE MENTAL HEALTH CHARGE BY FOSTERING CONFIDENCE THROUGH MENTORSHIP

Mentorship and Guidance:

One of the most crucial ways in which fathers can help prepare their sons for leadership roles in the business world is through mentorship and guidance. Black paternal figures serve as role models and mentors, imparting valuable wisdom, knowledge, and experience to their sons. By sharing their own experiences, successes, and failures, fathers can provide invaluable insights into the realities of the business world and offer guidance on navigating challenges, making informed decisions, and seizing opportunities. Moreover, father figures can introduce their sons to successful Black business leaders and professionals, facilitating networking opportunities and mentorship relationships. By connecting their sons with individuals who have achieved success in their respective fields, Black fathers can provide them with valuable mentorship, guidance, and support, helping them to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to excel in the business world.

Instilling Values and Work Ethic:

In addition to mentorship, fathers play a critical role in instilling important values and work ethics in their sons. Values such as integrity, fortitude, perseverance, and determination are essential traits of successful business leaders. Black fathers can impart these values to their sons through their words, actions, and examples, emphasizing

the importance of honesty, hard work, and dedication in achieving success.

Furthermore, African American fathers can teach their sons the value of education, continuous learning, and personal development. By encouraging their sons to pursue higher education, acquire new skills, and stay abreast of industry trends and developments, paternal figures can equip them with the knowledge and expertise needed to succeed in the ever-evolving business landscape.

Fostering Resilience and Confidence:

The journey to becoming a successful business leader is often fraught with challenges, setbacks, and obstacles. Fathers can help prepare their sons for these challenges by fostering determination and confidence. By encouraging their sons to embrace failure as a learning opportunity, persevere in the face of adversity, and believe in their abilities, fathers can instill the durability and confidence needed to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Moreover, the dads of the world can serve as sources of unwavering support and encouragement for their sons, providing them with the reassurance and confidence to pursue their dreams and aspirations. By believing in their sons’ potential and capabilities, fathers can empower them to strive for excellence, take risks, and pursue their passions with conviction and purpose.

Providing Opportunities for Growth:

Lastly, having a strong male figure can help prepare their sons for leadership roles in the business world by providing them with opportunities for growth, development, and advancement. Whether through internships, apprenticeships, or entrepreneurship ventures, Black fathers can expose their sons to real-world business experiences, allowing them to gain practical skills, knowledge, and insights into various industries and sectors.

Furthermore, they can support their sons’ entrepreneurial endeavours by providing them with access to resources, networks, and capital. By investing in their sons’ ideas, ventures, and aspirations, Black fathers can empower them to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams and make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

However, there is one belief the Winners Circle Group aligns themselves with as it pertains to how many men will honor their business practicums and how relationships boil down to respect.

“No matter how tough or aggressive you may be, if we’re in a room together, you won’t intimidate me. It’s about mutual respect. When a man can show respect towards you, they’re more likely to change their behavior,” Montgomery said. “That’s an important factor that can dominate a man’s leadership role.”

The role of Black fathers in preparing their Black sons to be business leaders in the world is paramount. Through mentorship, instilling values, fostering resilience, and providing opportunities for growth, Black fathers can empower their sons to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and achieve success in the business world. By serving as mentors, role models, and sources of unwavering support, Black fathers can help nurture the next generation of Black business leaders, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.

40% of Americans See Financial Independence as ‘Making It’

inancial independence is important to 67% of Americans, though nearly a quarter (24%) say they haven’t yet achieved it, according to new research from Empower, a leader in financial planning, investing, and advice.

FThe definition of “making it” financially varies among spenders and savers, though many equate it with resilience and independence: 44% of Americans say it’s synonymous with not needing to rely on anyone else for money, 39% say it’s career advancement and one quarter say it’s reaching a certain net worth.

To put a dollar value on it: $94,000 per year is the magic number average Americans feel they need to earn to achieve financial freedom, and 60% feel optimistic they can reach this money milestone.

Top signs you’ve financially “made it” in

life:

• Being financially independent/not relying on anyone else for money - 44%

• Moving up in my career/getting promoted - 39%

• Having a job I love - 37%

• Making a certain amount of money - 25%

• Not having to work at all - 25%

• Being able to spend money without worrying - 22%

• Being able to pay my bills on time - 9%

• Buying luxury items I want - 7%

• Being able to retire comfortably - 7%

• Buying a home - 6%

SET CLEAR FINANCIAL GOALS

Despite having financial aspirations for the future, a majority of people (72%) admit they currently stress over their finances at least once per month and nearly one in five (17%) say they worry about money daily. Getting on track doesn’t have a time limit, but it does require a honed focus. “No matter your age, financial independence starts with clarity,” underscores Keith Jones, senior financial professional with Empower. “Ask yourself what you want and why you want it. Establishing clear financial goals provides both direction and purpose, motivating you to work towards a more secure and satisfying financial future.”

THE JOURNEY LOOKS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE

Over half (57%) of Americans say they still rely on their family and friends for financial support, especially for help paying their rent (62%), internet and streaming services (56%), and their phone bill (54%). Of those who don’t feel financially independent, three in 10 (31%) are optimistic they will be in the future, while 54% don’t think they’ll ever be able to pay their bills without help.

The majority (92%) of financially independent Americans say they only started to feel that way once they reached the age of 36.

MONEY TALKS ARE IMPORTANT

Among parents surveyed, many linked communicating about finances to achieving financial independence, with 57% saying they regret not having more money conversations with their children while they were growing up. In fact, three in five parents (60%) say if they could turn back the clock and do things differently, they would have made financial literacy a priority. Although many believe their kids should be able to pay their own bills and expenses by age 23, 40% of parents with adult children aged 20 or older currently support them financially. More than half (53%) are dipping into their retirement savings to do so and 49% say they live with their children to help manage expenses.

METHODOLOGY:

This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 general population Americans was commissioned by Empower and fielded by market research company OnePoll between Dec. 11 and Dec. 12, 2023.

Small Businesses Rely on Major Banks Amid Pandemic Challenges

Small-business owners are increasingly opting for loans from large banks over small community banks, marking a shift observed over recent years. In 2019, a Federal Reserve survey indicated a near equal preference for both large and small banks among small businesses, with 35% applying to large banks and 33% to small ones.

However, by 2023, this trend had shifted significantly, with 44% of small businesses choosing large banks compared to only 28% opting for small banks.

Experts suggest that while factors like the Covid-19 pandemic and recent banking crises have influenced this trend, they

aren’t the sole reasons behind it. According to Mike Clarke, previously a community bank founder and CEO and currently a senior portfolio advisor at FJ Capital Management, smaller loans such as lines of credit and cash advances are not lucrative for community banks. As a result, larger banks, which have streamlined the process of automating such loans, are better equipped to serve small businesses, even those falling below the $250,000 or $400,000 threshold.

“With respect to small banks, they have largely ceded this market segment to the large banks with automated competency just as they ceded credit cards and low balance consumer loans long ago,” Clarke detailed. “I don’t think this means small banks have lost their relevance. I think

this further tightens the deliberate market niches where they are successful.”

While more small businesses are seeking loans from larger banks, they are more likely to be approved by smaller banks, according to a Federal Reserve study. Small banks denied only 25% of smallbusiness applications, compared to 34% at large banks, and approved 83% of lowcredit risk small businesses, compared to 76% at large banks.

Jamie Card from The Bonadio Group attributed some of this shift to demographics, as younger entrepreneurs opt for larger banks due to technological capabilities and service offerings. However, liquidity concerns and compressed margins at community banks have led to tightened lending standards, further driving customers toward larger banks.

“As small businesses are opened up by younger and younger people that don’t have established relationships with a community bank or credit union, they chose to ‘bank’ at a ‘big bank,’ which provides them ease of use with vast technological capabilities and a wide breadth of services,” Card said. The recent banking crises, including highprofile bank failures and Federal Reserve interventions, have also contributed to the trend toward larger banks, perceived as too big to fail.

Lou Haverty, founder of Tank Retailer, emphasized the importance of customer service for community banks to reverse this trend.

Rick Kuci, COO of FundKite, noted the significant deposit growth in large banks compared to the shrinkage in smaller banks, leading to consolidation within the industry. He predicted that while community banks remain a primary source of financing for small businesses, online lenders may continue to gain popularity due to their speed and convenience.

“Smaller community banks have always been the main source of financing for small businesses. That trend will continue,” Kuci said. “However, small businesses are realizing the benefits of online lenders and the speed of their delivery of financing products versus traditional bank financing. I think that trend will continue to grow.”

Additionally, startups have diversified their banking relationships following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, with many now holding accounts with multiple banks. Healy Jones of Kruze Consulting highlighted the growing demand for mobile banking services among startups, leading to a shift toward newer banks like Mercury and Brex.

SPECIAL PRESS AND PUBLIC ADVISORY

Please find below a heartfelt plea for justice for Haiti, sent in a communique to The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on March 19, 2024. This communique addresses how Haiti became the poorest nation in the western hemisphere, it’s current need for aid, and the future need for mutually beneficial trade.

March 19, 2024

The Honorable Mike Johnson Speaker of the House of Representatives

U.S. House of Representatives H-232, The Capitol Washington, D.C. 20515

Re: Justice for Haiti

Dear Speaker Johnson,

Sadly, I send this communique with dire concern for Haiti emanating from the brotherly love people of goodwill have within their hearts. Dolefully, the hands of history have chronicled how Haiti’s contemporary condition as the poorest country in the western hemisphere emerged from Haiti having been blackmailed/extorted by its former slave master/owner France. Haiti suffered the injustice of being forced to agree to pay more than $20 billion in today’s dollars as reparations for liberating itself from France’s enslavement. This ‘agreement’ was made under threat of re-enslavement with an armed flotilla of war ships from France. It took Haiti over 100 years to satisfy this extortion. NPR has published an article that explains this shameful behavior styled, “The Greatest Heist in History: How Haiti was Forced to Pay Reparations for Its Freedom,” published October 5, 2021.

Subsequently, the U.S. occupied Haiti from 1915 until 1934 and thereafter managed Haiti’s finances, according to the NPR article previously cited. In so doing (per NPR) the U.S. siphoned away around 40% of Haiti’s income for France and itself as debt service. Mr. Speaker, notwithstanding natural disasters, human failures, and other calamities, Haiti’s more than 100 years of being blackmailed/extorted has been the chief impediment to Haiti’s thriving. In truth, France, as the enforcer of the unjust extortion agreement, should pay Haiti back with interest on the more than $20 billion extorted.

Mr. Speaker, the Haitian interregnum notwithstanding, we need to release the $40 million available as security support for Haiti. According to Reuters, “Kenya’s government pledged 1,000 officers to lead an international security force last July, but the initiative has been tied up in court challenges and Kenya has asked to be paid upfront.” Please do not allow anything to prevent or delay our providing funds to help stabilize a country facing imminent chaos that is closer to the United States than Houston, Texas is to El Paso, Texas.

Mr. Speaker, as Congress is poised to send scores of billions of dollars to aid Israel and Ukraine, please help Haiti during its time of dire need. One final thought, I believe that aid in the short run helps a nation in need to survive. However, in the long run, it’s trade that helps a nation in need to thrive. Mr. Speaker, given our past equitably inauspicious relationship with Haiti, I unflinchingly believe we should invest in the future of our Caribbean neighbor by perfecting more mutually beneficial trade with Haiti. This would be the just and righteous thing to do.

Sincerely,

property maintenance, repairs, and homeowners association (HOA) fees if applicable.

Safeguarding Your

Finances:

A Guide to Protecting Yourself from Fraud

In today’s digital age, the growing portion of our lives taking place online has led to an increased risk of fraud. Cybercriminals are getting smarter and constantly finding new ways to exploit vulnerabilities. In fact, 2023 was the worst year ever for scams, causing people to lose $10 billion according to the FTC.

Yet, that doesn’t mean you need to panic! New technologies are helping protect individuals from scams before they even happen. And by taking a few simple steps, you can ensure your transactions and personal information are kept secure.

Here are some best practices you can adopt to safeguard yourself from fraud:

Keep Your Devices Updated:

One of the fundamental steps in fortifying your defense against fraud is to ensure that your devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers, are running on the latest operating system and software updates. Developers regularly release security patches and updates to address vulnerabilities, and by keeping your devices up to date, you minimize the risk of falling victim to known security loopholes.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Online Shopping:

Public Wi-Fi networks, while convenient, are hotspots for potential security breaches. Cybercriminals can easily intercept data transmitted over unsecured networks, putting your sensitive information at risk. It’s advisable

to avoid making online purchases or accessing your financial accounts when connected to public Wi-Fi. Instead, use a secure and private connection, such as a personal hotspot or a trusted home network, to conduct sensitive transactions.

Use Your Smartphone’s Digital Wallet:

Your smartphone’s digital wallet isn’t just super convenient, but it’s also a more secure way to pay. By setting a unique passcode (that isn’t your address, birthday, or phone number) and biometrics (such as facial recognition or fingerprint), your digital wallet will be even more secure than your physical one! Also, be on the lookout for enhancements to wallets that will provide even more features to keep you secure, including by letting users verify identities and manage their data all in one place.

Shop at Reputable Vendors:

When shopping online, it’s crucial to stick to reputable vendors and well-known e-commerce platforms. Be wary of unfamiliar websites that may lack the necessary security measures to protect your personal and financial information. Look for websites with secure payment options, indicated by “https://” in the URL, and familiarize yourself with the vendor’s reputation by reading reviews from other customers.

Use Multi-Factor Authentication:

Enhance the security of your online accounts by enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible. MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring users to verify their identity through a secondary method, such as a one-time code sent to their mobile device or email. This additional step makes it significantly more

difficult for unauthorized individuals to gain access to your accounts, even if they have your login credentials.

Zero-Liability Has Your Back:

Financial institutions that issue Mastercard cards won’t hold consumers responsible for “unauthorized transactions,” provided they are promptly reported, and the cardholder used reasonable care in protecting the card from loss or theft. As a Mastercard cardholder, Zero Liability applies to your purchases made in the store, over the telephone, online, or via a mobile device and ATM transactions. With protections like that, paying with your card brings more peace of mind than paying with cash or check.

Mastercard has an entire suite of solutions dedicated to fighting fraud and helping approve genuine transactions. That includes identity solutions that validate you are a genuine person; ID Theft Protection, which provides proactive monitoring and resolution of identity theft threats for U.S. Mastercard cardholders; SafetyNet, which leverages AI and machine learning to detect and address fraud more accurately and more quickly than ever before, and more.

Protecting yourself from fraud requires a combination of awareness, vigilance, and proactive measures. By keeping your devices updated, avoiding public Wi-Fi for financial transactions, choosing reputable vendors, using multi-factor authentication, and paying securely with your card, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to fraudulent activities. Stay informed, stay cautious and take the necessary steps to fortify your digital defenses in the ever-evolving landscape of online security. Explore 5 Budget-Friendly Ways to Maximize Your Summer

ummer is just around the corner! With the kids out of school, it’s the perfect time to plan a trip or two and spend quality time together as a family. However, family vacations can get pricey. By booking hotel rooms, flights and more, a summer trip can put a strain on your wallet.

This summer, you can make the most of the sunny season while sticking to your budget using these five tips.

1. BOOK EARLY

Don’t wait! One of the best ways to make the most of your summer and save is to plan and book early. This is especially true when planning air travel.

According to the CheapAir.com Annual Airfare Study, the fare will change 49 times on average from the day the trip first goes on sale. If you want affordable, flexible flights, aim to book your trip 2.5 to 7.5 months in advance.

In addition to flights, accommodations, concerts, and activities like summer camp can sell out months in advance.

To make sure your family doesn’t miss out on the fun, book ahead. Booking early not only secures your spot, but you can also get some discounts.

2. LOOK FOR DEALS

Watch for promotions and special offers on activities, attractions, and events. Check an organization or company’s websites and social media accounts to make your summer outings more budget-friendly.

Another way to save is to see if any of your existing accounts or services have member perks. For example, T-Mobile customers on qualifying plans now have Magenta Status, which unlocks VIP treatment with premium one-of-a-kind deals and experiences across nationally loved brands. One amazing perk of Magenta Status is getting a special rate at Hilton’s 22 leading hotel brands worldwide and automatic upgrade to Hilton Honors Silver status when you sign up for a Hilton Honors membership. Silver benefits include free Wi-Fi, a fifth night free on rewards stays, an all-inclusive spa discount and more. To learn more, visit T-Mobile.com/Status.

3. EXPLORE THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Nature offers endless entertainment for free or on the cheap. It’s no wonder that 26% of Americans plan to take an outdoor trip this year, according to Forbes. For day trips, head to a nearby regional or state park for a hike and picnic or catch some waves at the beach. If you’re seeking longer excursions, plan a family camping trip. If you don’t have the

right gear, don’t feel pressured to spend a ton of money. Ask family and friends to borrow tents, sleeping bags, coolers, lanterns, and camp cookware.

If you pack your snacks, sunscreen, and sense of adventure, you can make lasting memories in nature without draining your bank account.

4. HIT THE ROAD

Pack the car and get ready for a good old-fashioned road trip! A family road trip can be an exciting and budget-friendly vacation where the journey there can be just as fun as the destination. Plan a weeklong trip to a historic site, a natural wonder, or a city you’ve never visited. No matter where you choose to go, preparation is key. Load up the car with snacks, games, movies and all your device charging cords. Don’t forget to stop along the way. You may be surprised at the hidden gems you discover on the way to your destination.

If you’d like to keep the miles off your car, don’t stress! Renting a car with extra amenities is an affordable way to make a road trip comfortable and convenient. If you’re a T-Mobile customer, renting gas or electric vehicle is a breeze. Best of all, you won’t have to worry about filling up the gas tank at Dollar or recharging your electric vehicle (EV) at Hertz before returning it.

5. PLAN A STAYCATION

Sometimes, the best summer memories are made right at home. Staycations surged in popularity during the pandemic, and an international study found that the travel trend is unlikely to flag anytime soon. A trip where you stick close to home with loved ones can’t be beat for affordability and convenience. Need some staycation ideas? Turn your living room into a day spa, host a game night, camp in your backyard, or plan a scavenger hunt. The only limit is your imagination. If you want to look a little farther afield, use your staycation to explore your town! During the summer, your town or city may host celebrations and festivals your family can enjoy. Find out if local museums, theme parks and community centers offer discounts to children, students, and families. Make a list of upcoming summer blockbusters and hit the theaters. If you have T-Mobile Magenta Status, you can get a $5 movie ticket to a new major motion picture every single month, guaranteed. With a little creativity, planning and a willingness to think outside the box, you can make the most of summer without putting a strain on your finances.
