The ultra-connected working world has distinct advantages, especially for those who wish to work from the comfort of home, but the connectivity comes with a price. While meeting fatigue is a familiar workplace challenge, video fatigue brings a new layer of challenges.
Avoid exhaustion, burnout and digital eye strain from a rigorous video meeting schedule with these tips from ZEISS Vision Care:
Avoid digital eye strain: Back-to-back virtual meetings can leave your eyes dry and exhausted. The most important consideration in protecting your eyes is taking frequent breaks. Experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule: look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
Create a comfortable setting: here's nothing worse than realizing halfway through an important meeting you're either too hot or too cold. Rather than visibly disrupting the meeting, make sure you have what you need to adjust your climate in easy reach, such as a fan you can flip on or a blanket you can pull over your lap.
Look your best: It's human nature to worry about your

appearance on camera, so take a few minutes before the meeting to smooth your hair and straighten your collar. Wearing video-ready attire and accessories can put you ahead of the game. One example is incorporating subtle style such as eyeglasses featuring ZEISS DuraVision Gold UV AR. The coating offers several functional advantages including durability, improved cleanability, reduced blue light reflections, and enhanced clarity in low-light conditions.
Eliminate disruptions:
It's not easy to stay focused and engaged in a video meeting when you have noise and disruptions in your background. Turn off your music and mute your phone. Put curious cats and friendly pups in a safe place, and if you share your workspace, consider closing your door and hanging a sign that indicates a meeting is in progress.
Be mindful of lighting and angles: Lighting that comes from behind your screen will illuminate your face without awkward shadows. Avoid overhead lights or a table lamp behind you if possible. When it comes to setting your camera, be sure it sits at eye level or slightly above for the most flattering angle. A good rule of thumb is to have the same portion of your upper body (head and shoulders) visible as you would in a traditional head shot photo so your colleagues don't have a close-up of your face the entire meeting.

US workers with remote-friendly jobs are still working from home 5 years after the pandemic began
By d-mars.com News Provider
ive years after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted office life, American workplaces are settling into a new rhythm. Employees in remote-friendly jobs now spend an average of 2.3 days each week working from home, a research team that tracks remote employment has found. And when you look at all workers, they’re working remotely 1.4 days a week, or 28% of the time.
That’s a huge change from 2019, when remote work accounted for only 7% of the nation’s paid workdays, even if it’s down from the height of the pandemic in 2020. And it’s a giant leap from 1965, the dawn of telework. At that time, fewer than 0.5% of all paid workdays were out of the office, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
As management professors who study remote work and collaboration, Radostina Purvanova and Alanah Mitchell learned a lot about remote work’s challenges and its often-underappreciated advantages. In analyzing the latest data, they’ve observed that employers and employees are still trying to strike the balance between working from home and at the office.
HYBRID WORK IS ON THE RISE
Employers swiftly made the jump to remote work in 2020. Zoom became commonplace overnight.
Five years later, many employers, including JPMorgan, TikTok, Amazon and the federal government, are rejecting remote work, demanding that employees return to the office full time.
But these examples are not the norm.
According to Flex Index, which tracks the workplace strategies of over 10,000 U.S. companies quarterly, fully in-office work is on the decline. At the start of 2023, 49% of employers insisted that their staff report to the office daily. That percentage fell to 32% at the end of 2024.
Companies are also retreating from remote-only work. While 31% of employers were fully remote in 2023, only 25% had remained fully remote at the end of 2024.
Instead, companies are increasingly turning to hybrid arrangements. About 20% of professional workplaces were hybrid at the start of 2023. Just two years later, hybrid’s share had risen to 43%.
SOME INDUSTRIES ARE MORE REMOTE THAN OTHERS
The technology, insurance, telecommunications, professional services, and media and entertainment industries are among the biggest adopters of long-term remote and hybrid arrangements.
The states where remote and hybrid work are the most popular are Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and California. The states where it’s the least popular are Kentucky, Louisiana, Nevada, Nebraska, and Alaska. Some of these regional differences are due to where remote-friendly industries like technology and insurance are concentrated.
Businesses with 500 or fewer employees are the most likely to embrace remote work. Midsize employers, with 500 to 25,000 employees, are equally split across fully in-office, remote, and hybrid strategies. Very large employers, which
have 25,000 employees or more, are the most likely to adopt hybrid work.
These patterns show that remote work tends to be more popular among small employers, and in remote-friendly industries and states, whereas hybrid work has found a home in large companies.
WHAT EMPLOYEES PREFER
The remote work story is complicated also because employees have developed different preferences for in-office work, hybrid work, and remote work over the course of the pandemic and since it subsided.
In 2024, roughly 25% of professional employees preferred office work, 35% preferred remote work, and 40% preferred hybrid work, according to research by Zoom. Even recent college graduates express a range of preferences: 15% prefer to work at an office, 20% prefer remote work, and 65% would rather have a hybrid schedule.
However, the ideal balance of office and remote work remains a point of contention. While employees favor three days at home and two in the office, employers prefer the opposite: three days in the office and two working remotely, the Zoom survey found.
Generally, the future of work looks hybrid. But the remote work of the lockdown days – what’s now known as “fully remote” – is also here to stay.
On the fifth anniversary of the COVID-19 lockdown, there’s no one-size-fits-all workplace. And that’s a good thing.

EXPERT TIPS FOR SMALL BUSINESS SUCCESS IN THE AI ERA
By d-mars.com News Provider
xpert tips for small business success in the AI era
Today's small businesses are entering a new era, with smart, accessible technology helping to level the playing field, making it easier than ever to compete, grow and thrive. From AI-powered PCs and generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, to intuitive platforms like Canva, Square, Shopify, Mailchimp and QuickBooks Online, there's technology available to support almost any business need today - no IT team required.
Technology helps entrepreneurs and small businesses automate everyday tasks, tackle challenges, streamline operations and scale smarter - proving that small really can be mighty.
Whether you're just starting out or looking to take your business to the next level, here are practical insights to help your business thrive in today's digital-first world.
ACCESSIBLE RESOURCES DRIVE IMPACT
It's vital to recognize that any size business needs to optimize today's technological advances. In its third annual global CIO report, Lenovo found a whopping 96% of chief information officers expect to increase AI investments over the coming year. Additionally, 81% of CIOs say they're leveraging third-party AI tools or deploying a mix of third-party and proprietary AI.
Are most small businesses embracing new technologies? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Teneo found that almost all small businesses (98%) are using AI-enabled tools and more than half (51%) use financial management tools like Intuit QuickBooks. In addition, nearly half of small businesses (47%) use four or more technology platforms and 40% use GenAI tools like chatbots and AI-powered image creation. In other words, adoption of new technologies is widespread, highlighting their importance in today's business environment.
To get started, begin by identifying one key area of your business that could benefit from automation. From there, explore budget-friendly tools tailored to your business goals and tap into resources like mentorship programs and funding opportunities that can help you make informed decisions and implement tech with confidence. With the right support, small, strategic changes can unlock major efficiencies.
FROM UNDERDOG TO TOP DOG: HARNESS AI FOR BIG WINS
AI isn't just for large enterprises; in fact, Vena FP&A reports that 80% of staff who use AI and automation tools say they have become more productive. Interestingly, less experi-
enced workers experienced a 35% productivity jump, proving AI can make a positive impact for organizations and individuals, regardless of skill level.
A McKinsey report from March 2025 found 21% of organizations using generative AI say their businesses have fundamentally redesigned at least some of their workflows, resulting in cost savings. The bottom line: Nearly half of organizations (42%) believe AI-powered devices boost employee productivity and experience.
The takeaway for small business owners? You don't need to overhaul everything, but focusing on one area of your business to leverage AI can drive meaningful results.
RESOURCES TO HELP BUSINESSES GROW
When seeking resources to optimize technology for your business, start by identifying top technology priorities. Key places to start include improving cybersecurity, using project management tools to streamline workflows, and automating tasks like email marketing and inventory management. You can find information and resources on the U.S. Small Business Administration website.
In addition, programs like Lenovo's Evolve Small are dedicated to championing North American small businesses. This year, Evolve Small is introducing the AI Grant, designed to demystify AI for small businesses and help integrate AI into their everyday operations. The grant, which will be awarded to eligible businesses, includes $25K in grant funding, a comprehensive, customized Lenovo technology package valued at $10K, AI training, plus access to mentorship, mental health and leadership coaching, and community support.
There are also free resources available for any small business to leverage through the Lenovo Pro Community site.
By investing in key resources and embracing AI, Lenovo aims to empower small businesses to compete effectively with larger companies.
SMALL BIZ, BIG IMPACT
Fortunately, adopting newer and better technology does not have to break the bank or be overly complicated. The key is finding what suits your unique business needs and budget. With the right tools, support and mindset, small business owners can compete at a higher level than ever before - and win. Whether you're looking to simplify operations, better connect with customers or scale sustainably, now's the time to act.

STILL, WE RISE: JUNETEENTH’S LIVING LEGACY
By d-mars.com
News Provider
reedom isn’t a moment—it’s a mandate. And this Juneteenth, we rise not just to remember, but to recommit.
Juneteenth reminds us of the day freedom was finally announced to those who had already been declared free. It was late. It was layered in delay. And yet—it came. That moment, carved into history on June 19, 1865, wasn’t the end of our fight. It was the beginning of a new phase of our faith.
But Juneteenth is not just a Black holiday. It is an American milestone. While it centers on Black liberation, it also challenges every citizen to reflect on the meaning of freedom, the cost of justice and most importantly, the unfinished work we still have before us. The deeper truth is that freedom has always been contested but we still rise.
We rise from centuries of silence, from policies that still seek to oppress, from systems that try to erase, limit, and reframe the narrative of who we are. But we’ve never been strangers to the long road. Our people have always known and shown how to rise to the occasion of our dreams.
We rose in the fields with whispered prayers that became our marching songs of determination and hope. We rose in classrooms where we weren’t wanted but wouldn’t turn back.
We rose in boardrooms and courtrooms and kitchens and pews.
We rose with books in hand and babies on hips, leading revolutions in stilettos and sneakers. And we are still rising.
Yes, there is an atmosphere in the world today that feels familiar. Efforts to erase truths, suppress voices, and question the legitimacy of our contributions. But we are not hopeless. We are called, chosen, and have been cultivated
through struggle and triumph.
Hope alone is not a strategy. But without hope, there is no reason for strategy.
Hope is not passive. It is not a wish. Hope is the fuel of the fire that burns within us - The reason we keep showing up. Our ancestors survived by turning hope into movements. They hoped and they marched. They hoped and they organized. They hoped and they built schools, sued for justice, Spoke out, raised generations, changed laws and built empires.
Our hope must be Active. Intentional. Strategic. Faithful.
So, this Juneteenth, I invite you to celebrate. But I also invite you to remember.
To reflect. To recommit. I encourage you not to give up, become weary, abandon your purpose or resolve to complacency because of the times in which we are living.
We’ve survived it before, and we can do it again. Not because it’s easy, but because it’s in our DNA. Our story has never been one of passive survival. It has always been one of active rising. Every setback, every attempt to unravel our progress, has been met with our determination, our creativity, and our unshakable belief in what’s possible. That same spirit still lives in us, and it’s calling us now, not just to endure, but to build. To lead. To rise again with wisdom, strategy, and grace.
Freedom Day is not a finished chapter in the book of Promise—it’s a living responsibility. We are the stewards of that freedom, and we pass it forward with purpose because we still rise and we always will.

Top 5 things you need to know about
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists
By d-mars.com
hen you or a loved one undergoes a surgical procedure, it can be overwhelming. Many healthcare professionals comprise the surgical team to ensure your well-being throughout the process, including nurses. One type of nurse involved in your surgery and pain management is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), also known as a nurse anesthe-
siologist or nurse anesthetist. CRNAs are advanced-practice registered nurses who play a critical role in safe surgeries, airway management, and making patients comfortable and pain free.
FACTS ABOUT CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETISTS:
• 1. They’re trained to practice without supervision in all settings, including hospital surgical suites, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), offices of dentists, podiatrists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, and pain management specialists, plus U.S. military, Public Health Services, and Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities.
CRNAs are qualified to make independent judgments regarding all aspects of anesthesia care based on their education, licensure, and certification. They are also the only anesthesia professionals with critical care experience prior to beginning their formal anesthesia education.
CRNAs safely administer over 58 million anesthetics to patients each year in the U.S.
• 2. Require extra years of training and certifications. The education and experience required to become a CRNA is extensive, totaling a commitment of eight years or more in both clinical and educational experience. Today’s CRNAs enter the workforce with a doctoral degree, have a license as a registered nurse (RN) and/or APRN in the U.S. (or its territories), plus a one-year minimum of full-time work or part-time equivalent as a registered nurse in a critical care setting in the U.S., its territories, or a U.S. military hospital outside the United States. CRNAs must receive their doctoral degree from a program accredited by the
Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA).
• 3. Provide safe, high-quality, patient-centered careReassuring and comforting patients before, during and after medical procedures is what makes CRNAs so unique. Pediatric anesthesia care is a complex field that requires specialized knowledge, skill, and sensitivity to the needs of young patients.
• 4. Bring anesthesia services to settings that would otherwise lack them. CRNAs are the primary providers of anesthesia care in rural America, representing over 80% of the anesthesia providers in rural counties.
Many rural hospitals are critical access hospitals that rely on independently practicing CRNAs for anesthesia care, and half of U.S. rural hospitals use a CRNA-only model for obstetric care, often saving patients long drives of 75 miles or more to receive needed healthcare services.
• 5. Make healthcare more cost-effective. CRNAs are the most versatile and cost-effective anesthesia providers who are fully trained and qualified to work in any practice setting. While still a highly rewarding career, CRNAs offer a lower staffing cost, have proven safety records, and are not required to practice under a physician anesthesiologist.
Nursing is among the nation’s most trusted professions, and CRNAs are proud to be part of that public and patient trust. Nurse anesthesiology continues to be one of the safest, most innovative fields of science today, with CRNAs bringing the best in overall patient experience.

How to Plan for College Expenses
ach year, a majority of American parents of college students are confronted with higher-than-expected costs for tuition and room and board, according to a College Ave survey. The same survey finds that the price tag on other college-related expenses, such as books, activity fees and transportation, also catch a lot of parents by surprise.
Making a plan to pay for college can help you overcome that initial shock and navigate these important years with less financial stress.
TAKE
THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO CREATE YOUR PLAN FOR PAYING FOR COLLEGE:
Start saving early:
The earlier you and your family start saving for your child’s college expenses, the better. Even small, consistent contributions help. Automate your savings, if possible.
Choose the right savings plan:
Consider different savings plans that may help your family.
The 529 College Savings Plan offers tax advantages and can be used for tuition, fees and other expenses. A Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA) is similar to a 529 plan but has a $2,000 annual contribution limit. A High-Yield Savings Account is a flexible option for short-term savings. Custodial accounts (UGMA/UTMA) are managed by adults but they’re transferred to children when they reach legal age.
Seek aid each year:
Don’t forget to submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) each year your child is in school. This is the only way to receive need-based grants, loans and work-study offers from the federal government.
Read and compare financial aid award letters carefully:
Use each school’s financial award letter, which is delivered in the spring, to get a comparison of costs. Calculate the net direct cost of each school by subtracting offered scholarships and grants from the total cost of attendance. If applicable, you can subtract work-study aid too. You should also factor in expected year-to-year increases in tuition, room, board and other fees. This analysis can help you narrow down schools within financial reach for your family.
Consider appealing:
While an award package can seem like it’s set in stone, you may be able to appeal for more aid from the school of your choice. Don’t be afraid to ask for more aid if your financial situation has changed.
Look for outside assistance:
Scholarships are typically based on merit or talents and can provide substantial assistance. Colleges and universities themselves award scholarships, as do national and local organizations. Encourage your student to continue applying for scholarships year-round, as every little bit helps.
Explore private student loans:
The College Board reported that the average amount of aid that undergraduate students received in grants, federal loans, tax credits and work-study programs was $16,360 for the 2023-2024 academic year. Considering that the average total cost of attendance for a public four-year school that same year was $24,920 for in-state students, you might need more aid than your college initially offers. Private student loans are a great option to help supplement your financial needs. Shop around for a great rate and loan terms you can work with.
Paying for college can be intimidating but with the right plan and proper execution, it can all work out just fine.

How to Choose the Best Summer Camp for Your Kids
By d-mars.com News Provider
electing the perfect summer camp for your child can be a pivotal experience, shaping memories for years to come. Camps can encourage them to step out of their comfort zones, try new activities and overcome challenges away from the comforts of home.
SBecause campers are immersed in a variety of programs, such as outdoor adventures, arts and crafts, sports, team-building exercises, and more, they often return home more resilient, confident, and with a sense of achievement.
Consider these tips to choose the right summer excursion for your child.
UNDERSTAND YOUR CHILD’S INTERESTS AND NEEDS
Before you start looking for a summer camp, consider what activities your child enjoys, whether it’s sports, arts and crafts, science, or outdoor adventures. Knowing his or her preferences can help narrow down the options.
Additionally, think about your child’s personality and social needs to ensure the camp experience is tailored to his or her unique disposition. If your child is more introverted, a smaller, more intimate camp setting may be beneficial. A larger camp environment may better suit outgoing children who are eager to make new friends.
RESEARCH CAMP OPTIONS AND REPUTATIONS
Look for camps that offer the activities your child enjoys and have a good reputation. Read reviews from other parents and, if possible, visit the camps to get a feel for the environment. Each camp provides unique strengths, ensuring there is one for every child to enjoy and benefit from.
Check if the camps have been in operation for a significant amount of time and whether they have experienced and qualified staff. A camp with a long-standing reputation and a history of positive feedback can provide added assurance of a quality experience for your child.
EVALUATE CAMP SAFETY AND ACCREDITATION
Safety should be a top priority when choosing a summer camp. Ensure the camp is accredited by a reputable organi-
zation, such as the American Camp Association, which sets high standards for health, safety, and program quality.
Inquire about safety protocols, including staff-to-camper ratios, emergency procedures, and staff training in first aid and CPR. It’s also important to ask about the camp’s policies on bullying and how they handle behavioral issues that may arise.
CONSIDER CAMP LOCATION AND DURATION
Decide whether you prefer a camp close to home or if you’re comfortable with your child traveling to a different region. Proximity can be beneficial in case of emergencies or if your child experiences homesickness.
Additionally, think about the length of the camp session. Some camps offer one-week sessions while others might last for several weeks or just overnight. Consider your child’s readiness to be away from home for extended periods and choose a duration that aligns with your family’s schedule and his or her comfort level.

Can Learning Cursive Help Kids Read Better? Some
Policymakers Think it’s Worth a Try.
By d-mars.com News Provider
ursive handwriting is making a comeback of sorts for K-8 students in the United States. Several states in recent years passed legislation mandating instruction in cursive handwriting, including California, Iowa, and Oklahoma.
CPennsylvania and New Jersey are considering similar legislation, as are other states.
Shawn Datchuk is an associate professor of special education and the director of the Iowa Reading Research Center. At the center, they’re conducting a systematic review of prior research to improve cursive handwriting instruction.
They also want to know how learning cursive affects the development of reading and writing skills.
Cursive instruction sidelined
Cursive fell out of favor in U.S. schools over a decade ago. In 2010, most states adopted Common Core academic standards which omitted cursive handwriting from expected academic skills learned by K-8 students. In fact, the standards only briefly mention print handwriting, a writing style in which the individual letters of a word are unconnected, as a skill taught in early elementary grades.
Educators often have trouble finding enough time in the school day to teach all the expected writing skills, let alone something that’s not mandated such as cursive handwriting.
In several national surveys, teachers have reported limited amounts of time for writing instruction and that they have found it difficult to address both the basic skills of writing, such as handwriting, and more advanced skills, such as essay composition.
Benefits of handwriting
The increased interest in cursive handwriting likely stems from effort by policymakers to improve the literacy performance of K-12 students across the country.
On the National Assessment of Educational Progress reading assessment, a measure of nationwide reading progress, only 31% of fourth grade students scored proficient or above.
Research suggests it may be possible to improve overall writing and reading through handwriting instruction.
Preliminary evidence suggests cursive handwriting instruction may also be beneficial. Some studies have found cursive handwriting instruction can improve handwriting legibility, writing length, and select reading skills. In a 2020 study, researchers found cursive handwriting instruction can also improve spelling accuracy and storytelling ability.
On the surface, it seems like a simple motor skill. But under the surface, cursive handwriting draws upon deep reading knowledge and requires the coordination of multiple cognitive and physical processes.
To handwrite letters or spell words in print or cursive, students need to commit multiple aspects of each letter to memory. For example, if students handwrite the word “cat,” they need to know the overall shape of each letter, as well as its name and sound.
After drawing upon this reading knowledge from memory, students use a combination of motor and vision systems to write each letter and the entire word. Gross motor movements are used to adjust the body and arm to the writing surface. Fine motor movements are used to manipulate the pencil with one’s fingers. And visual-motor coordination is used to write each letter and adjust movements as needed.

TIPS DOCTORS WANT YOU TO KNOW

chool is letting out, the days are long, and the temperature is rising. For a safer, healthier summer, follow these American Medical Association recommendations:
S• 1. Wear sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Also, no sunscreen is waterproof. If you’re splashing in a pool or sweating in the summer sun, you’ll need to reapply every couple of hours or immediately after swimming.
• 2. Get up to date. With measles cases increasing, make sure your family members are up to date on their vaccines before travel and camp season.
• 3. Be water-safe. Make sure everyone in your family achieves water competency skills. Teach children to
ask permission before going near water, have inexperienced swimmers or boaters of all ages wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets, and always swim in lifeguarded areas.
• 4. Watch your diet. Reduce intake of processed foods, paying particular attention to added sodium and sugar. Add fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds to your diet. This doesn’t mean you have to give up summer barbecuing. Simply replace red meat and processed meats with lean meats, like poultry, and plant-based proteins.
• 5. Be physically active. Take advantage of warmer weather to get outdoors and get active. For optimal physical and mental health, adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week. While exercise is important, avoid working out outside in the early afternoon (noon to 3 p.m.) when it’s hottest. Drink water before, during and after physical activity, and wear light-colored, lightweight,
moisture-wicking clothing.
Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including cool, moist, pale skin, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, and dizziness. Be advised that extreme heat can be especially dangerous for certain people, including those taking certain medications, those with chronic diseases, older adults, and children. CDC’s Heat Risk Dashboard informs on how best to protect yourself when temperatures can impact your health.
• 6. If you’ll be consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans — up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men and only by adults of legal drinking age.
• 7. Know your blood pressure numbers. Extreme temperatures can impact blood pressure, so it’s especially important right now to visit ManageYourBP.org to better understand your numbers and take necessary steps to get high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, under control. Doing so will reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.
• 8. Check first. Before heading outdoors, check your community’s outdoor air quality using the Air Quality Index. Smoke from wildfires and degraded air quality that gets worse with warmer temperatures can irritate your eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Children, pregnant people and those with certain chronic conditions must be especially careful.
“Behind every summertime joy—warmth, barbecues, watersports—is a not-so-secret health or safety hazard like sunburn, heat exhaustion, drowning, unhealthy foods and drinks” says Bruce A. Scott, M.D, president of the American Medical Association. “Simple steps can ensure your family safely enjoys the summer season.”

TIPS FOR SELF - EMPOWERMENT After a Bladder Cancer Diagnosis
By StatePoint News Provider
ladder cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers, yet many patients face delays in diagnosis or struggle to find the right care.
Are you navigating a bladder cancer diagnosis or unsure of what your symptoms could indicate? Here are five tips for taking control of your care, including seeking out the advanced diagnostics procedure called blue light cystoscopy (BLC).
1. ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF
Early diagnosis saves lives, and routine check-ups and proactive testing can lead to earlier diagnoses and better outcomes. It’s important to stay organized by keeping track of medical records, test results and appointments. It’s also important to trust your gut. According to one patient, you may need to be persistent and proactive in order to get the right diagnosis.
While a white light cystoscopy remains a valuable tool, incorporating BLC enhances the process and, as a result, can lead to improved detection of cancerous lesions that can drive improved outcomes for bladder cancer patients.
2. EDUCATE YOURSELF AND OTHER
If you’re experiencing symptoms that could be bladder
cancer, learn more about bladder cancer, treatment and diagnostic tools such as BLC.
3. BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM
The cancer journey can be challenging and stressful. Surround yourself with family, friends and support groups who can help you advocate for the best care.
4. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR HEALTH CARE TEAM
When communicating with your healthcare team, patients say that being proactive is essential. “I learned to ask my doctors direct questions. It made all the difference,” says Mary Beth.
Some questions you can start with include:
• What technology do you use to diagnose and monitor bladder cancer?
• How often do you perform blue light cystoscopy?
• What are my options to ensure the most thorough diagnosis and treatment?
• Am I a candidate for BLC?
5. FIND A UROLOGIST WHO OFFERS BLC
Don’t be shy about seeking out the best care possible. If you are interested in exploring BLC, speak with your urologist. If your current provider doesn’t offer BLC, consider exploring other options.
When it comes to your health, be informed, be persistent, and never stop advocating for the care you deserve.

Choosing Healthy Beverages for Kids and Teens
By d-mars.com
News Provider
hoosing healthy beverages for children and adolescents is just as important as choosing healthy foods, as it impacts everything from oral health to chronic disease risk. That’s why leading health and nutrition organizations developed new healthy beverage recommendations for families with children ages 5-18.
CThese evidence-based recommendations were created as part of a collaboration by experts at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Heart Association, who were brought together by Healthy Eating Research (HER) with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
To make choosing healthy beverages easier for families, the organizations created these three categories:
BEVERAGES TO DRINK
• Plain drinking water is still the best option to keep kids healthy and hydrated.
• Plain, pasteurized milk is another healthy option because it provides important nutrients that growing kids and teens need.
BEVERAGES TO LIMIT
• 100% fruit and vegetable juice can be part of a healthy diet, but daily consumption should be limited.
• Plant-based milk alternatives like oat milk and almond milk should be limited because they are not nutritionally equivalent to cow’s milk. Many also contain added sugars and non-sugar sweeteners. If your child is allergic to dairy milk or has a dietary restriction, talk to your doctor or registered dietitian.
• Flavored milks, like chocolate milk and strawberry milk, should be limited because they contain high amounts of added sugars and non-sugar sweeteners.
BEVERAGES TO AVOID
• Sugar-sweetened beverages, such as sports drinks, sodas, fruit drinks, fruitades, aguas frescas, and sweetened waters are high in added sugars.
• Drinks with non-sugar sweeteners, such as aspartame, stevia, and monk fruit, should also be avoided. Just because a drink is advertised as sugar-free doesn’t mean it’s healthier. In fact, new research shows non-sugar sweeteners may not help control body weight and may increase the risk of diet-related chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
• Drinks with caffeine or other stimulants like taurine should be avoided. These include energy drinks, energy shots, coffee, and tea. Evidence suggests that there is no safe amount of caffeine consumption for children under 18 and that even small amounts can lead to poor sleep quality, increased blood pressure, depressive moods, and anxiety.

Protecting the Health of Black Women During Pregnancy and Beyond
By StatePoint News Provider
egardless of socioeconomic status, Black women in the United States are three times more likely to die from pregnancy than their white counterparts. Pregnant Black women are also 23% more likely to have a heart attack, 57% more likely to have a stroke, 42% more likely to develop a blood clot in the lungs, and 71% more likely to develop muscle weakness.
RWith increasing evidence suggesting that the prenatal period impacts the lifelong physical and mental health of children, these statistics show how important it is to eliminate these inequities for the well-being of not only moms, but the next generation as well.
“Black mothers deserve far more than the current maternity and health care systems that have failed us and our families for generations. But there are sustainable solutions and actionable steps we can take—centered on physicians, midwives, doulas, and other care providers working together as holistic, collaborative care teams—to ensure Black mamas receive comprehensive, culturally grounded care that honors our needs and supports thriving pregnancies and full, healthy lives,” says Angela D. Aina, executive director, BMMA, Inc.
According to advocates with the National Collaborative for Infants & Toddlers, the following policies could help protect Black women during pregnancy and beyond:
• Transforming the delivery of Black maternal care by making investments in social drivers of health that influence maternal health outcomes.
• Widening access to maternal healthcare services by extending Medicaid 12-month postpartum coverage nationwide and by growing and diversifying the doula workforce.
• Addressing structural barriers and systemic stigma that prevent Black mothers from receiving treatment and support services for prenatal and postpartum complications.
• Eliminating economic inequities by strengthening equal-pay legislation and raising the minimum wage to at least $17 an hour.
• Passing legislation that guarantees access to paid leave to meet the needs of pregnant people, caregivers, and families.
• Collecting and using intersectional data to better understand the causes of the maternal health crisis and inform solutions to address it.
• Growing and diversifying the perinatal workforce to ensure Black mothers’ care teams include providers who share their background, and to ensure their care teams include a range of clinical care providers, from obstetricians and midwives to nonclinical support personnel, such as care navigators and community health workers.
“A future where all individuals, families, and communities thrive is possible. Everyday Americans can chip in by contacting their elected officials and lawmakers and telling them to support policies that protect the health of Black mothers,” says Christy Ross, co-chair of the National Collaborative for Infants & Toddlers.

There is an epidemic of loneliness affecting boys and young men in America. The fascination with recent shows like Netflix’s “Adolescence,” Jonathan Haidt’s “The Anxious Generation,” and the return of the online “Ice Bucket Challenge” spotlight this youth mental health crisis in important ways that have reached millions. It is no secret how the mental health crisis has impacted boys and young men, and with May marking Mental Health Awareness Month, the conversation is more important than ever.
Meanwhile, statistics show that large numbers of boys and young men are feeling driftless and alienated; and so-called AI “aggro-rithms” are filling the void by increasingly driving them toward misogynistic content and misinformation online. There is still much research to be conducted about “aggro-rithms,” but the fact is that AI algorithms are serving up young men and boys content that is heavily centered around misogyny or violence, despite
their initial searches not pertaining to such. According to research done by mobile provider Vodafone, male teens in Britain are seeing such content on average of 30 minutes of being online. An astonishing 1-in-10 of those boys are seeing it with 60 seconds.
Traditional gender roles have resulted in boys and young men often being left out of the mental health conversation and care, despite being at particularly high risk for poor mental health outcomes. They are the least likely to seek mental health support and are four times more likely to die by suicide than women in the United States.
Supporting boys in addressing mental health challenges begins with ensuring that they have the role models to learn how to build healthy relationships, ultimately leading them to take healthier actions, and create safer communities for all.
For nearly 40 years, Futures Without Violence, a national non-profit, has pioneered programs and resources for advocates, policymakers and other professionals to foster safe, healthy communities. Through its Engaging Men programming, the organization is working to mitigate online dangers for boys and men, addressing the mental health crisis among them by connecting them with trusted mentors, and is supporting them to engage in healthier relationships.
News Provider
One of their efforts is a program called Team: Changing Minds (T:CM), which launched three years ago after a $5 million grant through Harry’s Open Mind Initiative. Training already-embedded adults in the lives of kids, like sports coaches, teachers, mentors and community leaders, to recognize early signs of mental health challenges, the program leverages existing relationships and trust to connect boys and young men to necessary support. With the support of founding investor Harry’s, and partners FUTURES, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, T:CM has trained over 80,000 adults to-date and is on track to reach over 1 million youth within the next year.
Anyone can be a mental health support for the boys and men in their life. Here are four simple, everyday actions family members, friends and coaches can take right away:
1. ASK QUESTIONS.
Don’t be afraid to ask simple questions that show concern. If there are specific changes you’ve noticed, mention them. This can be as simple as, “You’ve been less talkative lately, is there anything you’d like to talk about?” You also don’t have to wait to ask someone you care about how they’re doing. The more you speak about your feelings in a casual manner, and not just when things are difficult, the easier it is to talk about it when things are actually difficult.
2. LISTEN TO UNDERSTAND (NOT TO RESPOND) WITH EMPATHY. If you’ve shown the young people in your life that you’re someone who really hears them, they may be more likely to talk to you when they are having a rough time. Sometimes, you may not have the right thing to say, and that is OK. Rather than searching for those thoughts, it’s much more valuable to make it apparent that you heard everything they said. You might not know what it feels like to go through what they’re going through but knowing what they’re going through is just as important.
3. ASK FOR HELP.
You're not a therapist, and you aren’t expected to have all the answers. Lean on experts (such as school counselors or your child’s pediatrician) and brainstorm others you can call in to be part of the support team. Sometimes, you might have to be part of the support team while a professional handles the problem. Don’t feel guilty that you’re no longer the main point of contact; there are other ways you can support. You’re an important piece of this puzzle, but you never have to do this alone.
4. SUICIDE AND CRISIS LIFELINE.
If you or someone you know needs help, call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by just dialing 988. Remember that you should not be the one to resolve a crisis. Trained professionals are the only ones who can truly help if it ever gets to this point.
“Focusing on everyday actions to empower boys and young men to step into the simple things they can do as leaders, allies and change-makers is the goal,” says Brian O’Connor, vice president at Futures Without Violence.

The SCIENCE of Scent Understanding Smell Disorders
By d-mars.com
our sense of smell is more important than you think. It does more than just let you enjoy the aromas of your favorite foods or flowers. It can also serve as a warning system-alerting you to dangers such as a gas leak, spoiled food, or a fire.
Many adults experience changes to their sense of smell. Twelve to 13% of Americans over age 40 have problems with their ability to smell. "Smell disorders" are more common in men than women. The risk of having a smell disorder also increases with age; nearly 25% of men ages 60 to 69 have a smell disorder.
People with a smell disorder either have trouble smelling odors, or they experience odors differently than most people do. There are four types of smell disorders:
• Hyposmia - you have trouble detecting odors
• Anosmia - you can't detect odors at all
• Parosmia - the way you perceive odors changes; for example, something that normally smells pleasant now smells foul
• Phantosmia - you perceive an odor that isn't there
Smell disorders have many causes besides aging. Other causes are:
• Viruses
• Sinus inflammation and other upper-respiratory infections
• Smoking
• Head injuries
• Hormonal disturbances
• Dental problems
• Some medications
• Conditions that affect the nervous system
Changes in a person's sense of smell can be short or long-lasting. Some people regain their ability to smell when they recover from the illness that caused the change. Others recover their sense of smell spontaneously, for no obvious reason.
If you experience changes in your sense of smell, talk to a doctor. Smell disorders can be a sign of a serious underlying health condition and can have a negative effect on your quality of life. An otolaryngologist-a specialist in diseases of the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck-can help identify the cause of a potential smell disorder and offer options for treatment.
If you're experiencing changes in your sense of smell, talk to a doctor.

Recognizing Stroke Signs and Symptoms Could SAVE A LIFE
troke continues to remain a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. With over 12.2 million new strokes occurring each year, experts at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke say fast treatment may lessen the brain damage that a stroke can cause.
Stroke can affect anyone at any age, at any time, making it critical that everyone, especially those with known risk factors, understand and recognize the signs and symptoms of stroke.
The signs of stroke can be subtle and hard to recognize. One easy way to remember the signs of stroke is with the acronym FAST from the American Stroke Association. This stands for:
F - Face Drooping
A - Arm Weakness
S - Speech Difficulty
T - Time to call 911
The sudden onset of any
headaches, and vision problems could mean that someone is having a stroke, which is why it’s important to call 911 immediately when a stroke is suspected.
Disability is common poststroke, and recovery periods can be lengthy. This highlights the importance of speedy emergency care, which can help prevent disability and death, and may lead to a better quality of life poststroke. It’s also
important to understand that 25% of stroke patients will experience a second stroke within the first five years. However, with lifestyle changes and proper care, patients can reduce their risk
Going to the emergency room at the onset of symptoms can impact the care a patient receives, including their eligibility to enroll in a clinical trial, so it’s vital to seek immediate medical attention at the first sign of stroke,” says Clay Johnston, PhD, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder, Harbor Health.
One particular clinical trial, Librexia STROKE, is currently recruiting patients to evaluate an investigational medication for recurrent stroke prevention, but eligibility is time-sensitive and participants must enroll within 48 hours after the onset of their stroke symptoms. Delays in seeking care following the initial symptoms of a stroke can limit access to these types of innovative treatment options.

Nicole Wilson is who your doctors call when they need medical supplies
For the past three years, On The Go Medical Supply have provided the Greater Houston area and its surrounding neighborhoods with high quality, durable medical equipment and supplies in a fast and convenient manner.
“Our goal is to make every customer feel heard, supported, and confident that they’ve chosen the right partner for their medical supply needs,” Wilson said. “It’s not just about filling an order; it’s about building trust and delivering peace of mind.”
Before founding On The Go Medical Supply, CEO Nicole Wilson spent 15 years as the owner and administrator of a Home and Community-Based Services Program, providing care and support for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As she made deeper connections with her clients, she noticed how difficult it can be for families and care providers to get medical equipment and supplies quickly and reliably.
“Tat experience not only shaped my understanding about healthcare and advocating for people but also exposed me to the gaps and inefficiencies within the medical supply chain particularly in ensuring timely, reliable access to quality durable medical equipment,” Wilson said.
Originally, On The Go Medical Supply was intended to serve as a wraparound service for Wilson’s Home and Community Based Program. However, following a profitable sale, the concept was temporarily set aside. It wasn’t until she realized the market’s shortcoming that the idea was revived, ultimately evolving into a standalone venture with a momentum of its own.
“I wanted to create a business that understood the

Through an unwavering commitment to research, innovation, and excellence, we are committed to optimizing patient outcomes, ensuring safety, and providing exceptional value to our esteemed clientele.”
urgency and care behind every order because I’ve lived it from the provider side,” Wilson said. “Tat insight gave me a unique edge in the space and fueled my passion to solve the problem from a different angle.”
Born out of necessity, and not just another business model, Wilson picked up where she left off with her former program creating meaningful and trusting relationships with people in her community.
“I wanted to build a business that prioritized service over sales,” Wilson said. “My plan was to start locally and in the space that I was well versed in, establish trust in the community, and create strong relationships with providers, facilities, and families. I wasn’t just interested in moving product; I wanted to be a dependable partner in care.”
At On The Go Medical Supply, they specialize in providing durable medical equipment and essential healthcare supplies to individuals, caregivers, government agencies and healthcare facilities. Their core services include:
• Delivery of DME products such as wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, commodes, and more.
• Incontinence and wound care supplies, including adult briefs, underpads, gloves, gauze, and wound dressings.
• Off-the-shelf braces.
• Diabetic supplies including shoes and CGMs.
• Compression garments for post-surgical and long-term care.
Nicole Wilson, CEO, On The Go Medical Supply, LLC.
• Fast and reliable delivery service across the Houston area, often with same- or next-day turnaround if items are in stock.
• Gloves, AEDs, Emergency Medical and more.
• Responsive customer service, with a focus on building long-term relationships with providers and families.
If supplying high quality medical supplies wasn’t enough, Wilson has made true on her goal from day one and created a culture of caring for human beings and not just transactions. On The Go Medical Supply makes it clear that their priorities are speed, communication, and compassion, priding themselves on their responsiveness. In fact, they can offer same- or next-day delivery in most cases.
“Our team understands that when someone needs medical equipment or supplies, there’s usually a level of urgency and if we don’t have it, we simply tell the patient/client, Wilson said. “Whether it’s provider, caregiver, government agency or family member calling in, they get a real person who listens and follows through. Bottom line, we combine professionalism with heart, and that
level of service creates loyalty, trust and long-term partnerships.”
The hope for long-term partnerships has already come to fruition as On The Go Medical Supply works with a variety of organizations across the healthcare continuum. That includes home health agencies, hospice providers, group homes, residential care facilities, and doctor’s offices and hospitals.
“Tese partners rely on us not just for dependable access to medical equipment and supplies but also for the personalized support and fast turnaround times that help them deliver quality care, Wilson said. “Our relationships are built on consistency, communication and a shared commitment to patient well-being. Tat’s what keeps our partners coming back and referring others to us.”
Wilson believes that her company runs on the success of the three Ps: Purpose, People, and Process.
This level of attention doesn’t stop once the check clears, either. Wilson’s team confirms delivery times in advance, provides real-time updates, when possible, ensures everything arrives in good condition, and will even offer setup support for large equipment and help customers understand how to use new product safely.
“Our drivers are trained not to just drop off equipment, but they deliver with care,” Wilson said.
“Tat means respectful communication, clear instructions, and a focus on making the experience smooth and stress free.”
Purpose: “First and foremost, we’re driven by purpose, everything we do is centered around making sure individuals have fast, reliable access to the medical equipment and supplies they need to live safely and with dignity. Tat mission fuels us every day.”
People: “We have a team that genuinely cares, not just about doing the job, but about doing it right. Whether it’s our drivers, our customer service reps, or our operations staff, everyone understands that we’re not just delivering products we’re supporting someone’s health and well-being.”
“We’ve built a system that’s efficient, responsive, and scalable. From streamlined ordering to fast delivery to consistent follow-up, we’ve made it a point to remove the friction that typically slows down service in this industry.”
From top to bottom, everyone is expected to treat each customer with a personalized, respectful, and solution-focused experience. This not only includes transparency on their services, process, and times, but walking clients through their options, any insurance questions, and delivery logistics. And, according to the CEO herself, the most important thing about their service is that they follow up.
“We take the time to truly understand their needs, not just push products. Whether they’re a caregiver, provider, or an individual navigating healthcare for the first time, we meet them where they are comfortable and with empathy, clarity, and a sense of urgency.”
As On The Go Medical Supply continues to reach new heights, they’ve built a foundation for a bright future by focusing on expanding their product to support the diverse needs of their patients; implementing technological solutions to improve their inventory management, efficiency, and overall customer experience; and strengthening their local partnerships to expand their reach and make a difference in other communities.
“Te future of On Te Go Medical Supply is centered on innovation, expansion and serving our community. Our vision is to evolve into a comprehensive healthcare solutions provider, being able to address the growing needs of patients, caregivers and healthcare providers.”
No matter how much the company grows, Mrs. Wilson has made it clear that they’ll never forget what their mission was from the start.
“On Te Go Medical Supply was built from real experience not just from a business standpoint, but from years of working directly with individuals who rely on these supplies to live safe, comfortable, and independent lives,” Wilson said. “It’s rooted in purpose, built on service, and guided by a deep understanding of what it means to support people in some of their most vulnerable moments.”

5 Easy Steps to Create Your Home buying Budget
By d-mars.com
ne of the most important steps to take while house hunting is to create an intentional budget that accounts for both upfront costs and recurring expenses. Here’s how:
1. Assess What You Can Afford:
A common way to estimate the price range of a home you can afford is to multiply your annual gross income (what you earn before taxes) by three to five, according to Fidelity. Lower mortgage rates can substantially increase your purchasing power. Lenders set an interest rate for each person based on several factors, such as credit score. A higher credit score could mean a lower interest rate or better loan term.
2. Account for Upfront Costs:
When budgeting, account for these one-time upfront costs:
The down payment: This is typically between 5% and 20% of the home’s purchase price. However, qualified borrowers can put down as little as 3% with options such as Freddie
Mac's Home Possible or HomeOne mortgages. Both require private mortgage insurance, which is an additional expense to consider.
Earnest money deposit: Earnest money amounts to approximately 1%-2% of the purchase price of the home and is a sum you submit with your offer to show the seller you’re serious. The amount you pay in earnest money can be applied toward your down payment or closing costs.
Home inspection: The home inspection typically costs between $300 and $450, according to recent estimates from Rocket Mortgage, and will tell you about the home and its potential issues.
Closing costs: Closing costs are what you will pay to the people representing your purchase, such as your lender and real estate agent. Closing costs typically amount to 2% to 5% of the purchase price, and you may be able to roll them into your loan. Work with your lender to find the approach that best fits your financial situation.
Moving expenses: Whether you hire professional movers or DIY your move, online resources can help you estimate potential costs. When hiring movers, get quotes to ensure you are getting a fair price and to avoid moving fraud.
3. Plan for Ongoing Expenses:
Once you’re in the home, you’ll be responsible for making monthly payments. These may include your mortgage principal, interest, property taxes, homeowners insurance, private mortgage insurance, escrow payments and homeowners association fees. Most lenders agree that you should spend no more than 30% of your gross monthly income on these expenses. You’ll also need to save for regular maintenance expenses.
4. Leave Room for Flexibility:
Be sure to factor in savings for repairs or replacements of big-ticket items, such as your roof or HVAC system.
5. Use Tools to Guide Your Decision:
To help you answer the critical question of how much home you can afford, use Freddie Mac’s home affordability calculator found at myhome.freddiemac.com.
As you hunt for the home of your dreams, stay prepared and informed. One essential aspect of doing so is to set a realistic budget that accounts for the true costs of homeownership.

New study: Americans rate their financial happiness
n America's financial scorecard, people rate their happiness with their overall personal finances a 4.97 out of 10. New Empower research introduces comprehensive findings on how Americans plan to navigate the next wave of decisions on saving, investing, and the value of good advice.
Self-assessment across all dimensions of people's financial happiness is flagging: Americans rate their satisfaction with their retirement savings an average of 4.54, and the likelihood of retiring at their goal age at 4.93. When rating their financial success, scores come in at 4.46, as over half feel success is further away now than it was a year ago (55%). Contentment with salary notches in at 4.65, and people grade their ability to afford a home at a 4.83.
Economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and market volatility may be influencing scores, and delaying some choices: 69% think the economy is too uncertain to make big money moves. Americans say they plan to make important decisions in 2025, including figuring out how to make more money (43%); how to be financially happy (37%); and start an emergency savings fund (31%) - as 76% believe they need more savings to prepare for the unexpected. Nearly a third intend to make a financial plan (42% Gen Z, 39% Millennials).
Navigating decisions
When it comes to making investment decisions, half of Americans say they're ignoring the noise and taking the
long-view approach to the stock market (49%). For 2 in 5 (39%), this time of uncertainty is ripe to make money moves, believing the adage "the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward" - a figure that rises substantially higher for younger generations (Gen Z 51% and Millennials 49%; compared to Gen X 40%, Boomers 22%) and for those with higher incomes (50% for those earning over $100k+). Almost half say they are going back to the basics by investing more in cash and gold (46%).
Rather than a generational divide, the study also uncovers "a generational decide" taking place. To navigate uncertainty, Americans see an opportunity to strengthen their network effect, which people currently pinpoint at a 5.55 out of 10. These valuable connections are perceived as linked to career and wealth building, particularly as the largest financial exchange in history is underway, with younger generations projected to inherit an estimated $84 trillion. For almost all, financial independence and interdependence go hand-in-hand: people say not having to rely on anyone else for money is as much a part of their happiness (84%) as being able to financially take care of their loved ones (81%).
Advice advantage
Six in 10 (58%) say they need trusted financial counsel now, more than ever, as confidence in getting good financial advice trails at a 5.14 out of 10 and satisfaction with their financial plan is a 5.08.
The upshot is 78% say having a financial plan to guide their decisions ahead makes them happier and less stressed. For the majority, health equals wealth (70%), and most agree that talking with a financial professional about their money goals is important (65%).
a 4.9 out of10
More key findings from the report:
• Stress relievers: To reduce their financial stress, Americans are decreasing their discretionary spending and non-essential expenses (32%), switching to cheaper brands than they normally buy (32%) and building an emergency savings fund (30%).
• In advice we trust: Americans say financial professionals are the most trusted source of good money advice (50%) compared to just 10% for social media, 9% for AI, and 7% for influencers or podcasters.
• Barriers to making it: Americans say the biggest roadblocks to achieving financial happiness include income (35%) and feeling like expenses are adding up (35%). Close to a third feel that they are not in a place where they can save money (31%).
• Windfall wins: 74% say having more money would solve most of their problems, but a little can go a long way - 71% agree a windfall of just $5,000 would increase their financial happiness by at least six months. One quarter (22%) say they are banking on an inheritance to make ends meet.
• Signs of the times: Just over half of Americans say money can buy happiness (51%), which is a slight drop from the 59% who answered yes to the same question in 2023.
• Eye on AI: Americans rate the likelihood of AI replacing them at their jobs one day at a 3.72. They rank their level of comfort using AI for their personal finances nearly the same (3.73).

5 top trends for transforming your outdoor space
omeowners today are reimagining their outdoor spaces, moving beyond a basic patio and grill to create thoughtfully designed areas that blend style, comfort, and functionality. If you're among those looking to transform your outdoor space this year, the following are five top trends to consider:
H1. Seamless segues from inside out
As the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces continue to blur, homeowners are finding creative ways to bring the comfort of the indoors outside. Picture large glass doors gliding open to reveal a deck adorned with stylish outdoor furniture, cozy rugs and ambient lighting, creating an inviting atmosphere that feels just as welcoming as a living room.
2. Climate-friendly features
As climate resilience becomes a top priority, outdoor areas are being designed to withstand every season and adapt to a wide range of conditions. Homeowners want solutions that offer a year-round balance of comfort, durability, ease and style to ensure these spaces remain practical and inviting. Heat-mitigating composite decking, weather-resistant furniture, and shade structures help keep outdoor spaces
enjoyable, no matter the season. Water-resistant materials are also becoming. Low-maintenance solutions, such as Trex® composite decking, require only occasional cleaning to maintain their beauty for years.
3. Cozy, curated spaces
Rather than sprawling, undefined yards, many homeowners are designing smaller, purpose-driven outdoor spaces tailored to specific activities like dining, relaxing, or entertaining. Defined zones with level changes, pergolas, privacy screens and stylish deck railings create a sense of intimacy and character.
4. Smart features for comfort and convenience Technology is making outdoor spaces more comfortable and functional than ever. Smart lighting, weatherproof entertainment systems, app-controlled irrigation, and outdoor Wi-Fi hotspots are turning backyards into hightech havens. Features like built-in USB ports and wireless charging stations ensure outdoor spaces stay as connected and convenient as any indoor room.

SMARTWATCHES Promise All Kinds of Quality-of-Life Improvements.
Here are 5 Things Users Should Keep in Mind

martwatches Promise All Kinds of Quality-of-Life Improvements − Here are 5 Things Users Should Keep in Mind
Smartwatches and other wearable devices can feel almost magical. Strap on a Fitbit, Apple Watch or Samsung Gear and you’re suddenly presented with a stream of data generated by – and about – your body: step counts, heart rate, blood oxygen level, calories burned and more.
James Gilmore, a professor who studies technology, spent the past decade researching smartwatches and other wearables. His new book, “Bringers of Order: Wearable Technologies and the Manufacturing of Everyday Life,” considers the gap between what these products promise and what they actually do.
Wearables rely on complicated sets of sensors and computer systems to create data for each user. As these devices become more common – and more complex – he worries that people may be tempted to think less about how they work. As a result, they might accept data at face value without considering how it was generated, whether it’s accurate, or even if it could put them at risk.
So to get the maximum value from wearable technologies, it’s worth reflecting on the differences between what these devices seem to do and what’s actually happening behind the screen.
1. STEPS AREN’T REALLY STEPS
While it’s tempting to think so-called step counts reflect the number of times a wearer’s feet have completed the action of taking a step, that is not the case.
In reality, a combination of sensors and algorithms work together to produce a data point called “a step.” In most instances, something called an accelerometer measures change in the wearable’s velocity. This is checked against an algorithm, which provides an automatic assessment of whether enough velocity has been reached to count as a step. These components measure how much the wearable moves, not the person. Shaking one’s wrist very quickly can sometimes create a “step,” while walking in place might not count steps.
2.
SOME SKIN TONES DON’T
‘WORK’
AS WELL AS OTHERS
Blood oxygen sensors have become incorporated into many smartwatches. They use a process called photoplethysmography, which uses tiny green LED lights on the underside of a smartwatch to track how blood flows through your wrist.
In 2022, a lawsuit alleged Apple was perpetuating racial bias, as its blood oxygen sensors didn’t work as well on darker skin. The case was dismissed, partly because these limitations of blood oxygen sensors have been known to researchers and medical practitioners for years. In other words, it is accepted that some features will not work as well for some people.
3.
YOUR LOCATION MAY NOT BE A SECRET
There’s an entire industry made up of people called data brokers who buy large datasets from technology companies and then sell them to advertisers, market analysts, or other groups that may be interested in acquiring them.
It’s important to check all settings for options to reduce or eliminate data sharing. Otherwise, your private information might not remain private for long. In 2018, for example, the exercise app Strava released a “heat map” showing the running and cycling routes of all its users through the location data it had collected – and accidentally disclosed the location of multiple secret military bases around the world.
4. WEARABLES FOR CONSUMERS AREN’T MEDICAL GRADE
With wearables, as with other tech, it’s important to look carefully at the terms of use.
Most devices include boilerplate language about how the data they provide the wearer should be used recreationally and not replace formal diagnostics from doctors. Even though Apple has received FDA clearance for some of its health testing features and they may be quite useful for monitoring purposes, if you’re relying on data for health purposes, it’s important to consult a doctor.
5. WEARABLES CAN’T PREDICT THE FUTURE
OK, maybe this seems like it should be obvious. But it’s not.
Oura Ring recently added a “symptom radar” to try to detect when you might be getting sick.
These technologies use sensors such as heart rate monitors and thermometers to detect changes in a wearer’s baseline. While these sickness forecasts may be helpful, they’re like weather reports for the body, detecting changes in the body’s internal atmosphere using available sensors and algorithms. Any claim to predict the future is based on looking for patterns in information from the past.
While wearable tech can offer powerful insights, understanding how devices work is crucial for making sense of the data they produce. A little skepticism goes a long way: It can challenge inflated promises and protect users. In the end, wearables are best understood as interesting but imperfect tools − not magic wands.

Did You Know?
all slaves in the Confederate South were technically proclaimed free two-and-a-half years before the first Juneteenth?
On January 1, 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect, but as the country was in the middle of the Civil War, it was up to Union soldiers to enforce the order across rebel states. June 19, 1685 marks when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived on the island of Galveston and gave the final enforcement of the proclamation, freeing the last of the Confederate slaves, and officially marking the end of the southern rebellion.

“TRYING TO MAKE A DOLLAR OUT OF FIFTEEN CENTS.”
The Black experience in America means getting the short end of the stick or, in more blunt terms, making less than your white counterpart but still trying your best to be successful. Making a dollar out of fifteen cents is a testament to the idea that you can never stop moving; you’re always trying to make something work for you when it shouldn’t; and making the most out of what you have.
Beware the Double Click! Evaluate QR Codes to Protect Against Fraud
Some of the more prevalent and convincing scams include:
ncient civilizations had hieroglyphics, we have QR codes: the patterned graphic boxes prompting you to access restaurant menus, pay for parking, find out information about a package, and more.
Generally, quick response (QR) codes are safe, but they can be used to redirect you to malicious websites, so caution is important. Here’s how it works.
• You get prompted to use your device’s camera.
• You scan the code and a link pops up.
• You click the link, exposing you to threat actors.
• You’re directed to apps, websites, locations using your maps and much more.
It’s a cost-efficient scam because these codes are easy to generate and distribute. In public places, criminals can cover an official code with a sticker or printout showing a fraudulent code.
• Parking Ticket Scams. Criminals place fake parking tickets with QR codes on windshields, causing unsuspecting victims to scan the code and click the link to learn of their offense and digitally pay the alleged fine.
• Brushing Scams. A criminal will ship goods you never ordered, then require you to scan the QR code and click the link to see who sent you the gift.
• Payment Scams. Criminals cover a legitimate QR code with a sticker that has a fraudulent code that directs to a malicious site. This can happen at gas pumps, bank windows, parking lots, etc.
• Crypto Scams. Crypto transactions are often made through QR codes associated with crypto accounts, making this an appealing target for fraudsters.
To stay safe when using QR codes:
• Check the URL: Once you scan and the link pops up, stop! Examine it for unusual domain names or shortened URLs before clicking.
• Verify the source: Only scan QR codes from trusted sources, like official websites or apps.
• Check for tampering: Look for signs of tampering, like altered graphics, design flaws, or stickers placed atop original codes.
• Be suspicious: Treat sites asking for a password or login information as a red flag.
• Be wary of promotions: Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true.
• Use a secure connection: Look for a secure connection (HTTPS) or padlock.
• Confirm validity of request: Before taking action, like making a payment or entering personal information, confirm a request to scan with the company.
• Protect your device: Use antivirus and anti-malware software.
Report: If you identify a suspicious QR code or fall victim to a QR code scam, notify your bank and report it to law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission.
If you scan a fake QR code, your bank account, email, and identity could all be at risk. For actions to take, consult PNC Bank’s Reporting Fraud page on pnc.com.

Southern Fried Catfish
by d-mars.com News Provider
It’s June, which means summertime fun and plenty of cookouts in the park and backyard.
One of the classic staples of the cookout is fried catfish. With its crispy outside, flaky inside, and robust, southern flavors, even those who don’t like seafood will love this entrée. It’s not all you need for the party, but you’re going to be the main attraction if it’s what you bring.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE FRIED CATFISH:
• 3 - 5 catfish fillets
• 2 cups cornmeal
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 3 tbsp yellow mustard
• 2 eggs
• 2 tbsp creole seasoning
• 1/2 cup hot sauce
• 1 tbsp paprika
• 1 tbsp black pepper
• 1 tbsp salt
• 1 tbsp cayenne pepper
EQUIPMENT NEEDED:
• 2 large bowls
• 1 medium bowl
• At least 1 sheet pan, preferably 2
• Cooling rack
• Frying basket (optional)
• Large pot or fryer
GETTING READY TO FRY:
Fill a large pot or fryer with at least 2 inches of oil. With your basket inside, allow the oil to reach a temperature of 350°, but you can increase temperature by about 10 or 15, as it will cool when you place fish in the oil.
PREPARING THE SEASONING AND BREADING
In your medium bowl, pour in all the dry seasoning and mix evenly. In a large bowl, pour in your flour and cornmeal and mix evenly.
After, take a large spoonful of your dry seasoning mix and pour into breading mix. Mix evenly. You should dip your finger into the breading mix and taste it (yes, flour and all). What it tastes like is what your breading will taste like. Adjust with more to taste, if needed.
SEASONING AND COATING
THE FISH:
In another large bowl, pour in your eggs. Whisk until scrambled. Pour in hot sauce, yellow mustard, and remaining seasoning from your medium bowl. Mix evenly.
Next, grab fish fillets and work evenly through the egg mix to coat the entire fillet. Allow any excessive amount to fall off. After it’s coated, place into large bowl with your breading mix and flip onto both sides and pour breading over the top of each side to ensure there are no “clean” areas.
Use your optional sheet pan (if you have only one, save that for later) to place the breaded fillets on there to allow enough space to avoid sticking and clumping.
FRYING THE FISH
First, line your sheet pan with paper towels and place your cooling rack on top. The benefit of using a cooling rack is that the fish will not sit in the oil or steam at the bottom.
Next, once the oil is up to temperature, place one fillet at a time into the oil. Place them in slowly as to avoid cooling down the oil too quickly and avoid sticking. Do not overcrowd your basket/pot. Once they’re all placed in the oil, move fish around gently to avoid sticking to each other and the bottom and sides of the pan.
Cooking is done once the breading has turned golden brown, around 3-4 minutes or slightly less. If you use a frying basket, pull it out of the oil and allow excess to drip. If you don’t have a frying basket, use anything with a large surface, not a fork or tongs, to pull fish out of the oil and allow excess to drip. Place fish on cooling rack.
Once fish has cooled, serve with lemon slices and your favorite sauce and sides, and enjoy!
