In this issue we’re delighted to bring you some updates on improvements and expansions we have been able to make to key areas of the hospice service including our Wellbeing at Cynthia Spencer programmes and the latest from the Practice Development Team.

On page 4 we also share with you two lovely stories about how we have enabled our patients and their families to live every moment by creating very special events and experiences for them, something my team and I take enormous pleasure in doing. You’ll read about a romantic Parisian anniversary dinner and a fabulous 100th birthday celebration.

We’re celebrating our ‘hospice heroes’ on page 6 and paying tribute to a few inspiring individuals who really have gone several extra miles to support us by organising fantastic community events year after year which have raised amazing amounts of money in memory of some very special people.

What’s been happening at the hospice….

T

here’s lots of good news to share from the hospice in this issue, none of which would be possible without the generosity of our amazing supporters of course!

We have been able to expand our Wellbeing service from 3 days per week to 5 days per week which is fabulous news. The expansion mean we can welcome more patients suffering from life-limiting illnesses including advanced cancer, neurological conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease and Parkinson’s, advanced respiratory and cardiovascular disease and dementia. Our Wellbeing service tries to help patients live their lives as fully as possible, maintain their physical function and maintain independence for as long as possible and is made up of a series of programmes covering various symptoms and also exercise sessions aimed at helping patients to be as active as possible. You can learn all about our Wellbeing ‘drop-in sessions’ on page 10, where you can come and find out all about the service and how it can benefit you or someone you’re a carer for.

The charity is supporting the Wellbeing service further by partially funding a new full time role which will focus on coordinating patients coming in to attend the sessions while also working directly with patients in some of the group activities.

Our End of Life Care Practice Development Team continues to nurture end of life care skills for nurses, care home staff and other healthcare professionals looking to develop skills and knowledge or caring for patients at the end of their lives. Courses cover the care of dying adults in the last days of life, enhanced communication skills, syringe driver training and Advance Care Planning. Some of the teams training recently on advanced communication include the senior staff, nurses and therapists pictured above who work in various roles within the hospice’s service. All bookings for the education sessions are co-ordinated by the Team Administrator, a role that the charity is very pleased to fund. We’re thrilled to be supporting the essential learning that healthcare providers throughout the county are benefitting from so they are equipped to help patients to try and achieve a good death, wherever they are receiving their care.

Hospice Stories Bringing Paris to the hospice

W

e were so pleased to recreate the magic and romance of Paris, including champagne, a violinist and lobster dinner, in the hospice recently to help our patient Ian, who suffers from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and his wife Susan celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Ian really wanted to take her

to Paris, a city they both love, to celebrate but was not well enough so he asked the hospice staff for help to bring Paris to them! After lots of running around, organising and many favours from volunteers and supporters they really pulled it out of the bag and gave this lovely couple an evening of special memories.

We’re only able to create these special moments for our patients with the help and donations from our fantastic volunteers and community. hank you!

Happy 100th birthday Bert

W

e’re thrilled to have helped give our former gardening volunteer and recent patient, Bert a smashing 100th birthday party! Surrounded by friends and family, volunteers and staff from the hospice Bert enjoyed a trip round the woodland which he tended as a volunteer for over 20 years, together with a video collated by our charity team featuring messages from well-wishers and fellow gardeners including Earl Spencer and Kim Wilde plus cards and signed photos from Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh!

Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month 10am – 11.30am at Cynthia Spencer Wellbeing Centre

The sessions are run in conjunction with Northamptonshire Carers and represent a safe space where carers can share their thoughts and concerns with other people who are coping with similar experiences and of course everything is treated completely confidentially.

A chance to talk with others going through similar situations or just to get away for an hour or so Each monthly session includes topics such as: • Health and wellbeing for carers and family members • Specialist and confidential benefits advice by Community Law Service • Information on Powers of Attorney and Wills

Fantastic fundraisers

Paul Hughes shared a passion for Northampton Town Football Club with his football crazy friend Mark ‘Gozzer’ Gosling until Gozzer passed away in the hospice in 2015. Since then Paul has held an annual night of fundraising in Gozzer’s memory with a live band, DJ’s, raffle and silent auctions together with various fundraising trips to watch Cobblers. So far the events have raised an amazing £22,226.

Mick said: “I have been asked on a number of occasions why I do it….for his family, for his friends, keeping his memory alive and celebrating his life whilst helping other families to receive care when they need it most. The days and weeks leading up to the night are an emotional rollercoaster.

I feel nervous, worried, sad, excited all at the same time... just wanting to do my best for his family and friends but a moment of quiet reflection on the night looking at the photos of Gozzer on the big screen and seeing everyone having such a good time it really hits home how loved he 6 was, still is and always will be and this makes it all worth it.”

Mick Chaffer has been raising money for the hospice since 2003 in memory of his wife Lydia who passed away at the hospice because she was cared for so well. Mick and his family knew they had to do something to help support the hospice.

As a keen golfer and member of Overstone Golf Club friends suggested to him he run a golf day.

Mick said: “Our first event in 2007 raised about £2,000 and we had around 50 players and now we’ve just held our 13th golf day and have raised just under £45,000 which is fantastic. It’s truly a family affair as my sister and brother-in-law together with my son, daughter and granddaughter all get involved and we have over 100 players take part each year. I’m so grateful to everyone especially the staff at Overstone, all the players and the businesses who support us with raffle prizes.

I’m already planning next year’s event on 14th August 2020 and we’re going to carry on raising money as we all know someone who’s lost a very special loved one at the hospice so it’s going to keep needing our support.”

Take on a Challenge in 2020 National Three Peaks 36hr Challenge 26th June to 28th June 2020.

Take on the three highest peaks in the UK with a total walking distance of 23 miles (37km) and a total ascent of 3,064m (10,052ft).

“Doing the Three Peaks Challenge year after year is not only a great way of doing something we enjoy together but it also keeps us fit and we get to team up with people again who also do the same challenge as well as meet new recruits who are all doing this incredible challenge for a great cause!”

Snowdon Night Trek 8th August to 9th August 2020

Trekking Mt Snowdon (1,085m) during the daytime forms a great challenge, but by using torches to light our way and having the moon as our backdrop, summiting at night brings another sense of achievement to an already recognised charity trek.

Seeing the sunrise across Snowdonia National Park will be a memory never forgotten! Upon our descent, we will witness the breath-taking mountain range open up to give glorious views and afterwards we tuck into a delicious celebration breakfast!

ur Wellbeing service tries to help people with a life-limiting illness to live their lives as fully as possible, maintain their physical function and maintain independence for as long as possible.

Our services are lead by therapists as we believe this provides you with the best opportunities to achieve our objectives which are to give you information, skills and techniques to enable you and your family to live life to the full while coping with a life-limiting illness.

Nationwide Building Society

N

ationwide continue to be a great support to Cynthia Spencer by regularly volunteering at the hospice and the Retail Distribution Unit (RDU).

The teams of volunteers have recently participated in painting the Hospice as well sorting through bags of donations ready to sell.

One volunteering team had already raised £1,176 before they even came along to their volunteering day.

Also, teaming up with RSA, another team also raised £481.36. Other notable fundraising includes various activities back at the office too, where Nationwide took part in the 2019 Franklins £50 challenge raising £1,667 from a Valentine’s Day bake, Indian food sale as well Chinese New Year red envelopes as well as other fundraising activities.

A big thank you to all the staff from Nationwide as well as their customers who have supported and continue to support Cynthia Spencer.

arren Brockwell is no stranger to extreme fundraising challenges but he’s now facing his biggest feat yet as it’s in 30+ degree heat!

“On 11th and 12th October, I’m taking on The Saharan Challenge where I will complete two marathons in two days across the Sahara Desert.

I’m always looking to push myself a bit further and for my next challenge, this one seemed to fit the bill! I am a keen runner and have completed several marathons and ultra-marathons and this year I have already run 107km around the Isle of Wight and 100km through the Peak District.

Darren’s Double Saharan Marathon Challenge On the first day I’ll run the first marathon across sand and through villages, then after a night camping we’ll complete a second marathon where temperatures will be 30+ degrees!”

eet Alicia Holmes, our youngest ever abseiler at 12 years old and she raised a fantastic sum of £770! Alicia wanted to support the hospice in memory of her Nanny Julie who was a patient for two weeks in 2013 before she passed away. Alicia recalls: “I was 6 years old and I remember the hospice being a welcoming place not scary like I thought it would be. The hospice gave me my brother and sisters a memory box full of amazing things to help us remember our Nan which was very kind of them.

My mum always tells us how great the staff were to my Nan and that makes me so happy.”

Alicia’s mum, Natalie has also raised money for the hospice by doing two skydives and this was the motivation Alicia needed to become a fundraiser herself. “When my Mum told me you can abseil when you are 12 years old I couldn’t wait. We did bag packing at Morrisons to raise money towards my fundraising and my family and friends sponsored me too. I’m so happy I raised £770 and I’m so proud to give back to the hospice for everything they did for my Nan and my family. The abseil was amazing I did have to do it inside the tower as it was so windy but it was still really good. I was scared at first but now I want to do it again and even a skydive if I’m brave enough!”

t was a pleasure to meet Judith Wills, our latest £1,000 winner in our Your Hospice Lottery as she celebrated her win with her husband and members of the hospice team.

ur two services are informal and warm celebrations during which our Christmas tree lights will be illuminated in dedication to those who brightened up our lives but are no longer with us.

Both events will feature readings, carols from local choirs, solos from soprano Alison Roddy and lots of quiet moments for reflection.

By dedicating a light to your loved one and making a donation you will be helping Cynthia Spencer to light up the lives of patients and their families, not only at Christmas but the whole year through. As a lovely keepsake, your dedications will be featured in our commemorative order of service which will be available at the Cathedral and on our website after the service.

Our deadline for inclusion in the Order of Service is 22nd November 2019.

Our services are free to attend and open to all, not just those touched by Cynthia Spencer and regardless of faith.
