After a difficult couple of years, it’s good to be starting the year off with some wonderful news about a very special way for you to remember and could help a celebrate your loved ones. Our beautiful new Memory Tree stands in the child build a Memory Box to hold cherished memories of their fundraising office next to reception so it’s the first thing you see as you walk loved one through the doors. It’s certainly created a buzz around the hospice already and the sentiment behind it, each leaf representing a loved one’s life and a regular gift to the hospice, has really got people talking. You can find out more about how you can get your personalised, engraved leaf on pages 12 could pay for a patient and carer to be to 14. We can’t wait for you all to see it. The fundraising team are now back taught techniques to manage on site at the hospice in their new home so will be on hand to chat to visitors breathlessness and anxiety about the tree.

As you settle down to read Your Hospice Matters you’ll also come across stories from families who have been touched by Cynthia Spencer’s love, care could fund and compassion. Their stories recall the support they felt at the time and still a home visit by a feel now and are important reminders of how hospice care feels like a hug to Hospice@Home nurse the families affected.

This issue also serves as a wonderful reminder of how much our supporters love and care about their local hospice. On page 6 we celebrate could pay for our just a handful of those very special people who go out of their way to raise Chaplain for a day to offer religious money, make a donation or gather sponsorship by stepping out of their and spiritual support comfort zones to put their community first.

Also new for this year, and launching in May, is our legacy meadow, featured on pages 4 to 5. The hospice woodland has always been a place could fund an of peace and tranquillity for our patients and their families, our staff and in-patient’s care for one day volunteers. But soon, among the flora and fauna for which the woodland is home, visitors will see personalised forget me not flowers, engraved with the names of wonderful people who have left a gift to the hospice in their Will.

ur beautiful hospice woodland is a wonderful sanctuary for our patients to spend precious time with their families and other visitors, and for our staff and volunteers to relax.

Now this space will be filled with even more love, care and connection as it becomes home to our Legacy Meadow. As the path meanders through the woodland, past the bluebell patch and seating areas,

planted in the surroundings will be many beautiful wrought-iron forget me not flowers. Each flower will represent a gift of care and compassion enabling our hospice to carry on caring for our patients.

Some of the flowers represent gifts in Wills that we have already received and will be placed in the meadow in memory of those who have gone. While others will be planted by supporters who have told us of their intention to leave a

gift to the hospice when they die, perhaps through our Make a Will Month event.

On every flower will be a silver leaf that can be engraved with a personalised message. Our fundraising team will be happy to arrange appointments for supporters to come along and plant their flower in their chosen spot in the meadow or simply to visit it.

Legacy Meadow Why are gifts in Wills so important to the hospice?

• At Cynthia Spencer Hospice donations left in Wills are vital to ensuring we can continue to care for those affected with life-limiting illnesses. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to people who have remembered the Hospice in their Will. Currently the care of one in five of our patients is funded by gifts in Wills.

• All our Hospice services are offered free of charge, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and although part-funded by the NHS we rely on voluntary donations from our local community.

• Care is at the heart of everything the hospice does.

After you have taken care of your family please consider leaving a lasting gift in your Will to the Hospice. Every gift makes a difference – just 1% of your estate would have a significant impact on the care of future patients, so please consider supporting us in this way. When our Charity is fortunate enough to receive a legacy gift, our Trustees make sure it is used to help make a real difference to the care the Hospice provides. Our Charity uses legacy gifts to fund improvements to our service that would not normally be possible without such wonderful gifts.

Since our humble beginnings in 1976 the number of people we have cared for has increased significantly and that figure is going to continue to grow, particularly in the community.

How can you leave a gift in the hospice in your Will?

A great way to do this is to take part in our Make a Will Month which happens every year in May and enables you to make or update a standard Will for free. During Make a Will Month a number of local solicitors generously offer Will writing appointments to our supporters, waiving their normal fee, and instead ask for a suggested donation to the hospice.

Thanks to The Castle Theatre for panto support

W

e were treated to a night at the theatre in December by the wonderful team at The Castle Theatre in Wellingborough. The Theatre raised £958 for the hospice during the run of their panto, Sleeping Beauty, in recognition of the care employee Jason Freeman received. General Manager, Martin Cleverley sets the scene: “Jason was a very important man at the Castle Theatre and his passing was a huge loss for us all. We knew that the hospice was a great help to Jason and his wife Chris in the last few months of his life so it almost went without saying that it would be Cynthia Spencer we chose to support. It was an honour and a privilege to help in this small way.”

e currently work with some fantastic businesses, some of these who have supported the charity for many years and some have a 1-3 year partnership with us. Kilby Fox Accountants are a great example of this kind of support and have raised over £6,700. From bake offs to golf marathons, raffles, games nights and accumulator challenges they’ve used their network fantastically to fundraise and spread the word! HomeMove Estate Agents have made a huge impact for a small team with the abseils Paula and Ryan took on in 2021 and now newest recruit Haydon has caught the adrenaline bug and has booked a skydive in too.

The Franklins Accumulator Challenge is back for 2022

ranklins Solicitors LLP are again supporting the hospice, along with two other charities local to their Northampton and Milton Keynes offices, with the £40 Accumulator Challenge which runs from 3rd May to 28th June. Last year’s Accumulator Challenge saw eight local businesses, Ballyhoo PR, Chartwell Controls, Kilby Fox Accountants, Kingsley Roofing, Primark (Northampton), Robyn

Allen Solutions, Towergate Insurance and Travis Perkins using their acumen to grow an initial investment of £45 into fundraising for the hospice.

#meetthevolunteer Hi, I’m Bee I have volunteered for Cynthia Spencer for over 10 years and I love it! I have been at the Donation Station for over 3 years and it’s a great place to work. I wanted to do voluntary work when I retired and as the Hospice was so good to my Dad for the short time he was there, it was close to my heart. The people are so friendly, it’s like family and it especially worked during lockdown and the subsequent return to work. They keep me sane, busy and they make me laugh.”

Gill’s Story

K

im’s Mum, Gill was only in the hospice for a matter of hours but as Kim and her family recall, that time meant the world to her family at the time, and still does now. She was diagnosed with bladder cancer in November 2019 which at first was thought to be contained and not considered life-threatening. However, when the Covid pandemic began, her cancer returned in Gill’s muscle walls then started to travel and it spread into her lymph nodes. Gill then became extremely poorly in February 2021 and sadly passed away on 26th March 2021.

Kim recalls: “Mum came into the hospice as an inpatient on the morning of 26th March and passed later that evening. We knew she was dying and originally we would have liked her to be at home but unfortunately, she was too poorly, and we needed specialist care in her last hours. The care and love she received in those 10 hours were more than we could have ever hoped and wished for in her final hours.”

“There were a few moments which meant the world to us and still do. A lovely nurse came in with four handmade foam hearts which she placed around Mum, one in her hand and one on her heart. She then put my Dad’s hand in Mum’s, so they were holding the heart together and said ‘these are the last things that were with your

10 hours that meant the world to Gill’s family Mum and when she passes, you can all have one each, so you have that lasting connection with her, forever’ so now Dad, my sister Sarah, Mum’s goddaughter Chontelle, who was just like a daughter to Mum, and I have one of the hearts to keep.”

Gill’s room was set out so comfortably, just like a hotel room, with her own things around her like her dressing gown and photos of her children and grandchildren. The radio was playing so she wasn’t lonely. Kim told us how important this was as her Mum was scared of passing away, so this gave her and her family comfort. She also recalled a volunteer came in to ask what Gill’s

favourite tipple was, Baileys was the answer! As Gill was non-responsive at this point, they placed some on a mouth sponge and popped it in her mouth and around her lips so it could be her last taste. Kim told us how special this moment was to her and her family.

At Gill’s funeral, Kim and her family asked for donations instead of flowers and raised an amazing £2,500 with a JustGiving page. They wanted to do more though and later in the year the family held a memorial party with a raffle and auction which raised a further £7,050 making the total £9,550 and they aim to continue raising more.

Our Wonderful Memory Tree

Honour the memory of somebody special to you

W

hen people come into our hospice reception area, one of the first things they notice is our beautiful, shimmering Memory Tree. Adorned with bronze, silver and gold leaves, it’s a piece of art that we’re so proud to display.

Since we launched the Memory Tree in March we’ve received many requests for leaves and beautiful personalised messages. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone who has purchased a leaf to come in and see it when it’s placed on the tree.

Each leaf symbolises a remarkable human with his or her unique story to be shared. It’s also a wonderful way of saying ‘thank you’ for the dedication of our amazing care team – of paying forward care to the next patient we meet.

By dedicating one of our three types of leaf – bronze, silver, and gold – you can help deliver care and support within our hospice and community. You can do this

by making a one off donation or by setting up a regular donation by completing the form on the next two pages and returning it to us.

Our bronze leaf (minimum annual contribution £84 or monthly Direct Debit of £7) could pay for transport to our Wellbeing Centre. Here patients attend sessions where they learn techniques for symptoms such as fatigue and breathlessness and receive support to help manage symptoms at home.

Our silver leaf (minimum annual contribution £237 or monthly Direct Debit of £19.75) could cover the cost of five home visits from a hospice@home nurse.

This means a patient could receive specialised care in the comfort of their own home, while family members also get some precious respite.

Our gold leaf (minimum annual contribution £504 or monthly Direct Debit of £42) helps provide 24 hours of nursing support for somebody in our inpatient unit. Every day here at the hospice is special for those on their end of life journey. Our dedicated nursing team ensures that everyone who stays with us receives exceptional care.

For people like Mick, whose dad was with us at the end of his life, dedicating a leaf on our Memory Tree was so important. Mick’s dad, Bill spent his last precious moments at the hospice, surrounded by family and friends. In his story, Mick recalls some heart-warming

memories during their time here – Bill sipping his favourite Christmas tipple of rum and orange, the whole family singing along with Bill to ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ – and how Mick will never forget the support and compassion shown

The Memory Tree brings together a community of people, just like Mick and his family, on the same journey of love and loss. It offers solace and allows them to laugh and smile, thinking about all the good times shared with those dear to them.

As we watch the tree take root, each branch blossoming with special inscriptions, we feel honoured to be your local hospice.

Northampton Colour Run – 11th June 2022

he messiest 5k around is back! On Saturday 11th June at Overstone Park, we’re absolutely thrilled to be able to bring you the Northampton Colour Run! Great for families, friends and work colleagues it’s your chance to get active, get messy and get fundraising for the hospice. We’ve got plenty planned to make this the biggest and best Colour Run yet with games and attractions, including a coconut shy, plus a ‘bottle in a bag’ lucky dip for the grownups!
