Practice History

Corstorphine & Wright was originally a partnership formed in 1978 by Tom Wright and John Corstorphine, they created a practice who’s legacy endures today. The practice became an established commercial architectural practice creating a number of studios across the UK including London, Warwick and Manchester.

Parts of the practice were purchased by the SMC Group in 2002 which subsequently became Archial in 2008. The remaining studio in London continued to trade as Corstorphine & Wright during this period under the control of Stephen Barnett.

Following their decision to leave Archial in 2010 Paul Turner, Michael Lampard and Jeff Downes formed a new Warwick Studio of Corstorphine & Wright and re-joined the original company which had been managed by Stephen Barnett in London.

The new studio in Warwick very quickly secured work which enabled it to expand rapidly. At the end of 2010 Paul Turner and Michael Lampard became shareholders and Directors.

After a successful first two years and continual growth, Corstorphine & Wright opened an studio in Manchester with Ross Erwin.

During 2013 Corstorphine & Wright began talks with BBLB a practice in Stourbridge who had a good profile within Education and Residential sectors, these were areas that we were keen to develop. In April 2014 BBLB Corstorphine & Wright Ltd was established with the existing BBLB Directors.

In 2015 a studio was set up in Canterbury with Alistair Milne, who had an increasing workload and needed the support of a larger practice to deliver work for existing clients. This studio collaborates closely with our London Studio. In addition, we expanded the Northern region with Paul Thrussell and Simon North who both operated from Leeds.

During the same year our Birmingham Studio was opened to help raise the profile of our practice in the City Centre maximising our potential in a developing city.

During 2016 we joined forces with SasanBell a Glasgow practice with some joint clients, some of whom had offered work to us if we had a regional presence. This venture added Scotland as a territory and expands the practice experience.

In February 2019 we joined forces with Niven Architects in Darlington. This team focuses on BIM using Revit which we believe helps us to focus more on technical support for contractors and during large scale developments at the technical design stages.

In 2020 we welcomed Architecture519 to the group adding 30 staff to our Leeds Studio bringing experience in defence and security, residential, industrial, bluelight, offices, education, retail and leisure sectors.

Later that year we welcomed aLL Design in London, Will Alsop’s legacy design practice led by Marcos Rosello. A unique practice with studios and a remit in China and the Middle East.

Tamworth based WHP Architects joined us in 2021 bringing significant health capability, a growing sector that had been targeted by the group.

During 2022 we opened a Newcastle Studio to support our growing Health sector work.

In 2023 we were happy to see Lipton Plant merge with our London Studio to enhance our regional capability in the area and bring 20 years of experience and creative excellence.

In 2015 Corstorphine & Wright became part of the Architects Journal top 120 practices for the first time and in 2018 were ranked number 45 by a jump of over 27 places on the previous year. Over the last few years we have rapidly risen up the rankings and currently sit in 22nd place in this list of UK practices.

Masterplanning & Urban Design

We have delivered a range of projects across a number of sectors. Our experience comes from direct client or main contractor appointment.

Our focus on delivery and technical design information delivers our clients’ vision. This can be from working with a completed concept design or continuing to work with the architect who has produced the concept design and is focussed on the aesthetics to working with existing designs that are over budget, reviewing them and bringing in within budget.

College of Art and Design

A distinctive cultural force in Ontario, OCAD’s impetus to expand comes with a growing recognition at national level of the contribution of the creative industries to Canada’s modern economy. The decision to employ Alsop was based upon a significant track record in the design of cultural buildings of enduring effectiveness and appeal which also offered iconic representation of the client body as the school enters a new age.

Following the appointment, Will Alsop instigated a series of client workshops in which early concepts were developed with college staff and students. During this time, conventional ideas of teaching, learning and architecture were explored as the group sought to redefine their new college of art and design. The participants exchanged sketches and ideas that lead to the development of a basic strategy. These original ideas are embodied in the final scheme, a flying, translucent rectangle or ‘table top’ vividly patterned with a colourful pixellated skin, raised eight storeys from the ground and housing the new Faculty of Design.

The project unifies the existing brick structures beneath the ‘table top’, the park to the west and McCaul Street to the east. Views to the park are preserved for OCAD’s neighbours across McCaul Street, who participated in the consultation process. The park will also benefit from the area’s regeneration and, restored, will be the home to contemporary sculpture and school events

Programming works in collaboration with OCAD and Alsop have accommodated all the elements of a complex client group. In addition to the teaching and administrative spaces the project also incorporates gallery spaces, design and research centres, lounge and meeting rooms, specific craft and metalwork workshops and design critique spaces. The college satisfies its aspirations to revive a neglected area of town by inviting in the public to visit galleries and cafe spaces in the new building. Riverfront Redevelopment

Alsop’s first major project in Asia, a dramatic redevelopment of the river front district of Clarke Quay in Singapore, is succeeding in drawing tourists and locals back to the historic waterfront.

Developed by Capitaland, the SGD88million (approx. £30.6 million) mixed-use scheme, designed to increase commercial and leisure activities, gives the riverfront area a new identity and repositions Clarke Quay as a vibrant and attractive destination.

Crucial to the success of the project has been the architect and engineer’s ingenious manipulation of the site’s micro climate through the design of a distinctive and sophisticated shading/ cooling system that provides the quayside with tremendous visual interest and environmental benefit. Following a steady decline since its heyday servicing bustling trade on the Singapore river, and an unsuccessful conventional gentrification of the heritage site in the 1980s, Alsop was appointed in 2002 with a brief to rejuvenate the prominent three hectare diamond shaped site.

For Alsop the challenge was to provide a new ‘lease of life’, not just by developing an attractive re-design of the streetscape and waterfront, also to address the perennial climate problem - and to find ways to mitigate against Singapore’s ambient temperature and heavy rainfall - without resorting to the traditional scenario of creating an internal air-conditioned mall. The first phase of the waterfront revival, which was completed in March 2006, has effected a total transformation of the area’s ambience, activity and appearance through the redevelopment of three main areas: the riverfront, the streets and River Valley Road.

YUBEI AGRICULTURE PARK

Masterplan

‘Sendsun’ Agriculture Park will form the heart of the Yubei district in China. The master-plan unites agriculture and art within 4mm² of outstanding natural beauty. The project seeks to create a retreat from the intensity of the city of Chongqing.

The vast site that ranges from <540m to >450m sealevel will be dotted with luxurious tree-houses; yacht club, botanic garden, boutique hotels and a walled village populated with garden cottages. Land sculptures and art installations will pepper the landscape.

Each building will evolve as a site-specific form, combining natural materials of bamboo, wood, stone and weathered and polished steel. Surface patterns and textures are crafted on a grand scale with façade materials appearing woven, perforated or honeycomb.

There is an emphasis on the delightful and multifarious in the scheme that reflects Alsop’s design approach – the employment of varied arts practice to inform a master plan; from poetry - via painting, sculpture, music, craft and horticulture - to the art of contemplation - simply being and looking about. The resulting typology refuses to conform, inventing new ways to work and play.

HAFENCITY

Redevelopment of Industrial Waterfront

The name Hafencity means harbour city and the project came out of a vision by Will Alsop in the 1980s. The city’s chief planner invited Alsop to discuss plans for the now defunct industrial port. In 1985 Alsop initiated the Bauforum in Hamburg, a series of public workshops which looked at the Elbe waterfront and what people wanted to create there. The Bauforum brought together architects, politicians, developers and local people in a series of meetings held over several days. The result of this was a huge model of the waterfront, populated with the dreams and ambitions of the citizens.

The Elbe riverfront has subsequently enjoyed a renaissance of life and activity. Alsop’s practice designed and built a 500m long ferry terminal and a mixed use refurbishment and extension of the Stadtlagerhaus as part of the renewal scheme. The feel of the HafenCity builds upon the historic beauty of the red brick industrial buildings and intersperses them with bold new designs from the worlds leading architects.

Now the waterfront is a vital part of the city, the master plan has expanded to include three new neighbourhoods, and 1,700 people live there, with 8,400 employed in 300-plus businesses. The leafy character of HafenCity is being considerably intensified. Squares, small and large, and links between them will advance urban spatial integration. Lohsepark, the “Central Park” of Hafen-City, will be extended down to the River Elbe. In the south, an Elbe promenade may motivate people to stroll on to Entenwerder; an island for play and leisure is to be created in Baakenhafen harbor basin.

As part of the first phase, Alsop designed and oversaw construction of the ferry terminal and conversion of historic Stadtlagerhaus into mixed use scheme. He opened an office in the city and has enjoyed decades of good relationships with Hamburg.

TESTBED II

Masterplan: arts and exhibition space, hotel, retail, leisure embracing

The masterplan and redevelopment of an area between the Yangtze and Jialin rivers in the district of Yuzhong, TESTBED II, Phase I is now complete. The development includes aLL Design’s new Chongqing headquarters. The studio and offices sit within a grand hilltop scheme with spectacular views of the city. The concept is partly inspired by Alsop’s former London HQ, Testbed I in Battersea; a creative hub that housed start-up and established businesses, a gallery, exhibition and performance spaces, bar and beach.

TESTBEDI’s events programme, exhibitions and range of visiting speakers, garnered great interest and attracted vast numbers of visitors.

Testbed II, Chongqing, offers a similar environment on a greater scale, with boutique hotel, art gallery and studio spaces, offices, live/work units, restaurant, bars and a distillery. A central market and performance/exhibition space s planned to extend the programme of events and provide a meeting place for ‘creatives’.

Phase II includes the ‘suitcase’ hotel, so named for its striking metallic suites that ‘grow’ out of the ground on stilts, overlooks the river and valleys beyond. A ‘floating’ restaurant and landscaped roof gardens make full use of these spectacular views. The masterplan has been designed to incubate burgeoning businesses and to foster a collaborative, creative community. This cultural hub is the first plan of its kind for the region.

The 43,366m² site originally comprised a series of both functioning and derelict buildings – the occupiers include interior designers who were involved in the evolution of aLL Design’s plans. The fabric of any demolished buildings is part-salvaged, retored and incorporated into the new structures.

Shopping Mall shop

aLL Design have won planning permission for a new retail concept in Nairobi, Kenya. The centre will be aLL Design’s first project in Kenya and the late Professor Alsop’s only project in Africa.

Nairobi shopping centre and Grade A office project, ‘The Beacon’, is to be developed by Kiloran. The new open-air mall features 24,300m² of retail, food and beverage along with a 4,200 m², seven-storey office tower overlooking the mall’s roof garden and bar.

The contents of the mall will be characterised by a ‘sweet factory’ theme with many details commissioned by local craftspeople and artisans as well as those using the latest manufactured materials and technology. The Beacon is intended to bring delight to locals and tourists; the vivid colours and striking patterns of the façade will hint at the amusements and leisure facilities inside. A light monorail with ‘jellybean’ style carriages is planned; a helter-skelter, piano staircase and merry-go-round will enliven the space and encourage community interaction and shared experience. Playful twists on form and function will fulfil Alsop’s desire that architecture should always be fun.

The main façade to Uhuru Highway is clad in monochromatic porcelain panels broken by a bright red leisure box. Internally, mallscape walkways are sheltered from seasonal rain and sun by colourful solar fabric canopies. A thatched rooftop restaurant and solid surface clad bar sit atop a biodiverse brown roof.

It is intended that the mall will become a destination in its own right and will sit well on its prime retail pitch immediately between major employment zones; the Central Business District, the Industrial Area and Upper Hill financial district, broadening the localised leisure offer to provide facilities that encourage longer dwell time on site by visiting families with children; teenagers and young people.

The completion and grand opening of ‘The Beacon’ is planned for the spring of 2020 and the building will be an architectural legacy for Nairobi that will serve to promote tourism.

The Mauritsweg project, rebranded ‘Calypso’ was completed in 2013. It is a development of Rotterdam Centraal, the urban strategy scheme, undertaken between 2000 and 2001 by Will Alsop. Consultation and workshop exercises with the community of Pauls Kerk church in particular, were central to the development of new designs.

Previously occupied by a hotel, retail space and church, the site is a key meeting point of a number of primary city routes. New shops, a replacement church and residential accommodation, have preserved a mix of public and private realms and accommodate a broad social spectrum.

The quality of the public areas in particular have been considered with a two-tiered circulation space below the residential buildings; the lower below a transparent pavement traversing the upper, and connecting directly with car parking for 305 cars. The development takes the form of five “rocks” – structures which accommodate the apartments, retail area, commercial space and the church.

The apartments provide a mix of differing forms and layouts, Alsop felt this imperative to creating a sense of identity for a large apartment block. The balconies are partly enclosed enabling year-round use.

The development of this site established the beginnings of a quality public realm on the Westersingel - leading from the station - the city’s ‘cultural route’. The development reinforces and enhances pedestrian routes across the city which has been identified as a positive contribution to the city mesh.

Condominium Building at home

Alaska is a condominium building sited on a crucial boundary on Yonge Street, between the city and suburbia. Existing structures in this area are generally low-rise brick buildings and the condominium is one of a number of innovative schemes to champion new architecture in this part of Toronto. The project was cited in Toronto Life’s 50 reasons to love Toronto, alongside proposals by other world class architects for the city.

The façade is blue-green glazed, interspersed with strips of opaque white glass. The mass of glass renders the overall visibility of the building subject to the weather – the reflective quality enabling

Alaska to ‘disappear’ into the sky. Much of the glazing is formed of large Louvre windows that can be opened to aerate outside living areas and closed to protect from harsh conditions whilst allowing spectacular views.

Together with the client, a designer and furniture retailer, aLL Design has devised a series of unique interior concepts. Sold off-the-shelf; kitchen, bathroom and partition systems fold away so that space can be maximised within the apartment. These Swiss Army knife-like features will transform the way that we think about our homes.

The scheme is currently in re-zoning, and the city has responded positively. A series of public presentations have highlighted public concerns and the design has been adapted in close consultation with the client and stakeholders and without compromising its boldness. The project will be launched to the market in 2018 and built in 2020.

The Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension Project (TYSSE) provides a critical extension for the existing Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway system across the municipal boundary between the City of Toronto and The Regional Municipality of York (York Region). The six stations include two designed by Will Alsop in collaboration with local architect Richard Stevens (part of the IBI Group)- Finch West and Pioneer Village (PVS). PVS sits adjacent to York University and includes a metro station, car parking and a bus station.

Subway Station aboard Finch West is the second subway station designed by Will Alsop in collaboration with local architect Richard Stevens as part of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension.

The concept defines a ‘station of light’ to provide direct and indirect daylight and sunlight into previously dark spaces. This is to provide a positive psychological effect on all passengers and staff using the station and provision of daylight would in-turn lead to reduced energy consumption.

Alsop also worked with long-term collaborator, artist Bruce McLean.

They have developed a concept of public art fully integrated with the architecture.

The structures supporting the power substation reference Greek caryatids; the pillars supporting the underground were inspired by 6,000 year-old Minorca-style pillars.

New City Masterplan embracing

Haikou is a city in the tropical Hainan province in south China and a popular cruiseliner stop over for tourists. Will Alsop’s studio was appointed to masterplan a 15-hectare site close to the city centre, with the brief to create an innovative mixed use scheme.

The proposal stacks a variety of uses including residential, offices, retail, eating and drinking and other leisure activities to form towers that are interwoven with parkland and undulating pedestrian walkways; waterways and roadways are bridged to knit sites together. Several storeys within each of the towers are given over to shared gardens and landscaping. The groundplane landscape design eaves along the entire length of the site, varying in level and punctuated by stepped squares and plazas. A series of kinetic solar shades rotate, circulating cooler air to mitigate the humid local climate.

A total area of 800,000 sqm is proposed, with 45% residential and the remainder a mixture of offices, hotels, retail and leisure facilities.

Masdar, Abu Dhabi Residential Development and Urban Design

The Fusion Quarter neighbourhood, is sited within Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City development. We proposed a six-phase development programme to create a neighbourhood with a strong emphasis on leisure and recreation.

The 240,000m2 (gfa) aims to provide an optimal work-life balance; a carbon-neutral community, the Fusion Quarter will be a welcoming environment for an international population where all cultures will be represented through the retail and leisure offering, making the area a focal point for the whole of Masdar City.

The unique selling point of this neighbourhood is that all aspects of daily life, for both the professional and their families, have been carefully considered; this quality-orientated living experience will be a key retaining point and will help prospective business tenants build a competitive and stable work force in the region.

Utilising a cost-efficient modular construction methodology, the design aims to strike a balance between ease of construction and diversity of offer, through a sophisticated system of building components and room modules that can be arranged in varied combinations.

Al Reem Island, previously referred to as ‘Abu Al Shuoom’, ‘The Pearl’ and ‘Emirates Pearl Island’, is a residential, commercial and business project to be built on the natural island of Al Reem, off the northeastern coast of Abu Dhabi city. In 2009, Will Alsop’s practice was invited to propose a vision for the Najmat area. The development is connected to the Abu Dhabi city island by three bridges and is 20 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Al Reem Island covers an area of 633 hectares (68 million square feet) to be built by three developers: Tamouh Investments, Sorouh and Al Reem Investments. The development will be overseen by an independent thirdparty facilities management company known as Bayt Al Khidma, who will ensure that all three Reem Island developers meet the high standards of construction. The island is expected to accommodate 280,000 residents and will include important amenities like schools, medical clinics, shopping malls, restaurants, a 27-hole golf course, hotels, resorts, spas, gardens, and beaches.

Residential, Commercial and Business Island

A boardwalk stretches from the vehicular bridge in the west to the marina in the east. With its natural, wild landscape it offers a different experience from the rest of the masterplan. It will be a romantic destination with attractors such as the juice bar and oyster bar. Around the perimeter of the marina, outdoor dining tables are cantilevered on platforms over the water’s edge. These tables are sheltered by large petal canopies which offer shading and cooling to create a pleasant outdoor environment which animates the marina day and night. The marina is the focal point of the Masterplan. It features a multi-purpose, kinetic stage which can vary in height for different performances and rotates to form a projection screen for open-air shows. To the north of the stage raked seating platforms provide dedicated seating for open air performances.

City Centre Landscape

In 2010, Will Alsop’s practice was shortlisted to design a landscape to unify the centre of Lille. The site is a long strip defined by the canal which, in-turn, is sheltered by surrounding large scale infrastructure. Alsop masterplanned a new river and linear park with paths that bridge the waterways, animating both riverbanks and increasing accessibility to the wider city. A programme of sports and cultural activities is imagined on a series of promontory stages and in public spaces along the river’s edge.

The vision provides urban coherence and an ecosystem for a more sustainable city. The park re-establishes flora that has been lost over the years and uses passive techniques to oxygenate and cleanse the water and to supply energy for the fountains and public lighting. Activating the river area focusses the city’s cultural offer encouraging public engagement in new and historic Lille.

Competition, Mixed-Use Masterplan embracing

Long Beach is a mixed-use scheme located on the Shanghai Waterfront. aLL Design’s proposal responds to the natural advantages of the site, benefiting from sea views and the public promenade. Our scheme intends to promote an active ground floor and public realm with a strategy of ‘buildings in the sky’.

The scheme is split into three key elements. The ‘Lighthouse’ Tower, containing a museum, offices, a club & sky garden, will provide dramatic sea views and act as an icon for the waterfront. The ‘Lobster’, containing an hotel, apartments, live-work duplex and offices, is raised on legs providing views of the ocean – raising the structure permits light and encourages air to permeate at ground level. A raised and undulating landscape has been created to contectualise the wider landscape.

A series of public walkways and promenades host a range of bars and cafés that further animate the Shanghai waterfront.

Mixed Use Development - Office and Hotel together

The Hainan International Trade plaza project is located on the Dayingshan Haikou City Road, adjacent to the Hainan Provincial Government Centre. There are three elements to the design concept: water, ice and wind. These represent three distinct parts of the building.

The atrium is designed around water features and is partially open-air with generous provision for social interaction; seating, recesses for privacy and meeting spaces on varied levels around the light, well-ventilated space.

Design of the offices is inspired by ice - a textured glass block that brings solidity to the building.

The façade is similar to that of Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal which engineers a sustainable and ecological cooling, ventilating and shading system. The inner skin is doubleglazed using clear, curved glass which both insulates the building and deflects the sun’s glare. The external skin provides a “rain screen system” that shelters occasional balconies. The outer skin is made of white faceted, fritted glass.

The hotel is elevated - the lobby on the 52nd floor is accessed by three express lifts from the ground floor, the underground shopping complex and the car park. Four further lifts transport guests to the upper floors - the highest hotel rooms in Haikou and enviable views of the city.

Will Alsop was appointed by the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal to develop proposals for the Gao Yang site. Alsop reviewed the previous masterplan and proposed interventions for consolidating and enriching it.

Alsop co-ordinated with the other design team disciplines: structural, mechanical and electrical principles as well as supporting information relating to traffic analysis, fire, structure, facade engineering and lighting design.

Gao Yang is a site of 68,000sqm, located along the Huangpu River in Shanghai, providing a gateway into the metropolis and accommodating three 80,000-tonne cruise ships at any one time, with a passenger flow of over 1.5 million people per year.

The city planning authorities set a target to liberate 30% of the municipality for citizens to enjoy as part of the Shanghai world expo 2010, whose theme was ‘better city, better life’. The cruise terminal site formed part of the vision to create a green corridor along the Huangpu River. Completed in 2010, the mixed-use development occupies a total floor area of more than 260,000 sqm, comprising 80% commercial use, and 20% public facilities including an art gallery and retail outlets. Existing structures were preserved where possible and the design complements the context and enhances waterfront views.

“Alsop’s intelligence in the conception of the project results in a conviviality for those that use it and a dynamic transparency to understand how the building is used.”

This headquarters building for the regional government of the Department of the Bouches du Rhone was won by Will Alsop in a two-stage competition in 1990. The starting point of the project was the political decision to relocate the Departmental headquarters from the centre of Marseilles to the suburb of St Just as part of a regeneration initiative. This was made possible because the Metro provides a convenient connection to the site from all parts of the city - the trains run literally below the building. The site, close to the shore of the Mediterranean, was subject to extreme conditions of wind, including the mistral, and Alsop’s environmental strategy was an important aspect of the practice’s submission.

The scheme (built in 26 months between the end of 1991 and spring, 1994) brings to fruition a number of themes and ideas explored in previous Alsop projects. The basic format of the building consists of two parallel administrative blocks, rectangular in form, joined by a toplit atrium. The attached block containing council chamber and assembly hall (the Deliberatif) is cigarshaped and joined to the other blocks by walkways and escalators. The office atrium is a public space, grand but not intimidating, dramatised by great pairs of “X” columns, with shops and cafes

for staff and visitors. The tremendous presence and impact of this major late 20th century public building is achieved with a high degree of economy - the materials used, concrete, solaglass, timber and steel, are straightforward but used in an extraordinary way. There was an equal stress on economy in the services strategy, with only limited use of air conditioning and optimum use of natural ventilation. Shading devices, including a sweeping fabric awning across the assembly hall block, counteract the effects of the Mediterranean sun. The impact of the building as a public landmark is vastly enhanced by the use of strong colour in the external elevations - stimulating, comfortable and affordable; the Hotel is the antithesis of the conventional bureaucratic fortress.

The luxury five-star SIDE Hotel is situated in the heart of Hamburg between the Gänsemarkt Square and the National Opera close to the Binnenalster, only a few minutes walk from the art and cultural centre of Hamburg. With its distinctive architecture and fitout this hotel sets itself apart from the usual Hamburg Hotels. It is very much a luxury hotel for the 21st Century: a 12-floor lifestyle experience for the individual traveller to Hamburg.

The central feature of the Hotel is the 30m-high entrance lobby atrium incorporating an illuminated installation by New York light choreographer Robert Wilson. Two full-height lighting fields dominate this space, ever changing in a calming sequence.

The hotel facade features a combination of glass and nature stone that stretches across all 12 floors. A glazed angular volume forms the urban block facing the street, its double skin serves as both thermal and noise barrier. Within the skin cavity colourful, gently-lit sun screens create an animated presence within its surroundings. A further volume clad in light green natural stone cantilevers over and above this block, accommodating the hotel suites that provide stunning views across the city of Hamburg.

Hotel facilities include a generous roof terrace, conference facilities, media lounge, library as well as the restaurant “Fusion” and a wellness area with pool, steam room, fitness and massage facilities. The automated mechanical car parking system has capacity for 100 vehicles.

Raffles City comprises two apartment hotels, a shopping mall, residents’ Clubhouse and elevated landscaped gardens.

The position of the apartment hotels at either side of the retail centre, provides boundary and shelter to the roof terrace, creating a private urban garden for the residents. The glazed roof of the mall forms an illuminated central feature to the garden. Apartment types vary from single bed studios to 3 bedroom units, all of which have a garden view or a view to the city, some face the Forbidden City.

The Clubhouse has two private entrances and houses a swimming pool and gymnasium; crèche and lounge. There are an abundance of restaurants and boutiques within the shopping complex, an art gallery and an outdoor space that hosts events and displays.

aLL Design’s proposed raised theatre complex comprises three theatres: a main 2000-seat theatre, an 800-seat multifunctional theatre and a 500-seat children’s theatre. They each share a large foyer area and backstage and technical areas are served by a vehicular access ramp and a lift with capacity for large-scale scenic equipment.

The building sits within a landscape designed with areas for repose and relaxation. There is an outdoor stage for summer performances; shops, bars and restaurants. A network of raised pathways enables visitors to survey the spectacle from an array of viewpoints.

aLL aims to create an environment both evocative of the region’s natural habitat and surprising and stimulating in its innovation. The design of a creative, dynamic world, inspired by theatre arts intends to absorb and delight.

La Fosca Beach Hotel is a new Rough Luxe hotel in Palamos, Spain. The design comprises a series of spaces to eat, drink and relax offering hotel guests and locals variety and choice throughout the seasons.

Hotel bedrooms are individual ‘tree-house’ pods, the forms of which are derived from the canopies of pine trees typical of this region. These pods would be constructed off-site and each supported in-situ’ by its own set of structural columns.

The variation in height and positioning aims to recreate the forest’s canopy. A driftwood screen between street and hotel provides shade and privacy to the bedrooms from the street. All bedrooms have full-height, south-facing glazing that opens onto private terraces which enjoy magnificent views to the sea.

Almere, Netherlands

The “polder city” of Almere, close to Amsterdam, has evolved as a low rise development along the lines of the English garden cities. Although the residential areas of Almere are attractive, the settlement lacks a real “heart” and the dearth of local amenities encourages people to commute to Amsterdam for entertainment. Almere has, however, something of a tradition of encouraging bold and innovative architecture and this has underpinned moves to transform the central area.

In line with the development masterplan for Almere, which envisages a process of “intensification” for the city centre, Alsop designed a 16,000 m² waterfront entertainment centre. Completed in 2003, the centre consists of a family of buildings grouped around a new square and elevated 4m on a unifying podium, which covers a parking area. Varied in form, the buildings use a variety of materials to create a rich new urban landscape. At the heart of the development is the Pop Zaal, its reinforced concrete structure clad in preweathered zinc and steel mesh. The four storey hotel, in contrast, is clad in cedar boarding, while the retail centre is metal clad. The square itself is a lively place, with cafes and restaurants, attractive in all seasons.

The City Museum of Zhuhai and Urban Planning Exhibition Hall is a regional museum and cultural facility authorised by the city government of Zhuhai. It has responsibilities of research, excavation, protection and collection of the heritage of the City of Zhuhai and exhibition, education and research of history, culture and art for the city. Additionally, it will exemplify Zhuhai’s approach to urban planning and construction, and become the roadmap for future urban development.

The Shizimen Business district, located on the Xi River estuary in Zhuhai, is divided into two parts: The southern part is located on the northeast of Hengqin Island, its east and north extend to Shizimen River, while its south extends to Hengqin port district. The total planning site area is 5.77 km².

The business and exhibition cluster is located in the northern part of Shizimen Business District (Wanzai and Monkey Island), with an area of about 258,000 m², and gross floor area of 556,000 m².

The development is planned in two phases. During Phase One, 150,000 m² (gross: 245,000 m²) will be developed including part of the Zhuhai International Conference Centre; International Exhibition Centre, International Class A office building and two five-star hotels, business apartments and business facilities.

Phase Two covers an area of 108,000 m², (gross: 311,000 m²) including the completion of the Zhuhai International Conference Centre, International Exhibition Centre, International Class A office building, and further business apartments and business facilities.

DANCING TOWERS

The Dancing Towers were designed with the intent to exude the spirit of joy, delight and fun while creating an identity for residents’ return home.

The two towers, though each 65-storeys are differential in height due to distortion of the vertical and the rotation of their axis. At the base of the towers sits a public space - the “Ballroom” - that can be opened up during summer months. The Sports Bar comprises rock climbing, swimming and volley ball facilities alongside a coffee stall, juice bar, deli and florist. The mix ensures a lively and active space.

The “Dance Floor” is an additional external space that can be opened to the public when required. At its heart is a bandstand with dance-floor and the sales centre; these are surrounded by gardens.

A single band of colour at the 42nd level, “The Bow Tie” provides amenity space for residents with function room; fitness area, lounge and library.

The Chongqing Global Towers Development brief requested a landmark development and luxury living catalyst for the City.

The masterplan, totalling c.1.4 million m2 comprises three towers, clusters of residential and serviced apartments, retail space and landscaping.

aLL Design proposed towers of varying heights from 43 to 59 storeys. Two towers are residential and the third hosts serviced apartments. The design includes private car parking and private elevators, private front gardens, and swimming pools ogether with communal gardens and a member’s club.

Sustainable Waterfront Development embracing

aLL Design’s masterplan for the redevelopment of Ras Al Khaimah’s Corniche transforms the shoreline into a year-round, sustainable, waterfront destination. We have grasped the opportunity to integrate green technology, with each component designed to meet the latest environmental standards.

These use adaptable solutions to be enhanced as newer technologies emerge, enabling the Corniche to export advanced ideas to other parts of the UAE and the wider region. As a result the lifetime costs of the scheme are greatly reduced comparative to a traditional approach.

The scheme achieves a 5o temperature reduction and lowers humidity in key areas by 50% to 70% with the use of ETFE, ground cooling and other technological advancements.
