THRIVING NOT JUST SURVIVING

FRIENDS OF THE

Botanic Gardens For many years now, Friends of the Orange Botanic Gardens (FOBG) have been giving back to our community through their volunteer fundraising projects, which help keep the beautiful Orange Botanic Gardens a major highlight of our local community. On November 5, the FOBG will be again hosting their everpopular annual Spring Plant Sale. President of Friends of the Botanic Gardens, Dennis Croucher said, “I’ve been with the FOBG for 12 years now, I’ve always enjoyed the friendships that are formed and especially helping to support the gardens. After all, that is what we are here for.

“We always get a really good crowd at our sales, so we are looking forward to meeting all of the enthusiastic people and looking forward to a successful day.” The upcoming Spring Sale will run from run from 8:30am to 12pm and stock a wide-ranging variety of natives and exotic plants, a large range of salvias plus the rare Mt Canobolas Prostanthera Gilesii (mint bush). There will be a range of gardening books and other items for sale on the day. All money raised will go back into projects within the Orange Botanic Gardens.

STEP INTO THE

SPRING SALE! The Spring Sale which raises money for the Orange Botanic Gardens will be held at the nursery between the Adventure playground and the Orange Botanic Garden’s entrance (left of the car park). Grab some excellent bargains and support these wonderful volunteers.

As Mental Health Month draws to a close, headspace Orange in partnership with the Western NSW Local Health District (LHD) and Orange City Council organised the inaugural Youth Forum “Thriving Not Just Surviving”, for Tuesday 31st October. The forum delved into discussions about mental illness through shared personal stories from special guests Dan Hunt, former NRL player for St George Illawarra Dragons, and Chris Fitzpatrick, suicide survivor. “We were very excited to have our two guest speakers, Chris Fitzpatrick and Dan Hunt, join us for the day to share their personal experiences,” comments Jen Syme, Youth Care Link worker from the Western NSW LHD. “It was a chance for young people to make new friends, have fun, and learn more about the topics of mental health, suicide, resilience and wellbeing. “The power of personal story is massive, and something that stays

in people’s minds much longer than statistics.” Alison Logan, Program Manager at headspace Orange says the forum was an inspirational meeting for students in years nine and ten. “We had students from seven schools in Blayney, Orange and Molong join us at the Function Centre.” In addition to the talks from the guest speakers, the Youth Forum hosted a variety of games and social activities as well as allowed students the opportunity to ask questions of Chris and Dan in an open Q&A session. The Youth Forum has been made possible by funding from the Sally Foundation, Orange City Council, Club Grants and the Mental Health Association.
