but my home seems to have been destroyed and put back together several times already. Good luck everyone for the remainder!

Congratulations to the four winners of our ‘Find the Footy’ competition who have each been given a family pass to Saturday’s clash between the Panthers and West Tigers in Bathurst, thanks to Bathurst Council. It was one of our most popular competitions of late, with a substantial number of people looking to snap up the free tickets.

We have also been inundated with entries in our most recent ‘Let’s Feast’ feature giveaway. Each week ‘Let’s Feast’ showcases mouth-watering meals from our special selection of local eateries and we are giving you a chance to win a $75 voucher to your ‘Let’s Feast’ venue of choice. It is easy to enter. The hardest part will be picking which amazing venue to spend your winnings! Take a look for yourself on pages 18–19.

For those who’ve been missing The Good Enough Parent column in OCL, we are pleased to welcome Emily Thompson back this week. She has written a moving piece. As you’ll read, Em has been doing it tough of late, but she is facing it all with the same courage and humour that regular readers will recognise from her weekly contributions. We all love you here Em, and are thinking of you!

Anzac Day is next Thursday and inside this edition, you will find a special commemorative 2024 Anzac Day pullout that includes the official Dawn and Morning Service Program, Anzac March route map, and two pages featuring the images and names of the 40 men adorning the banners in Summer Street as part of ‘The Local Fallen’ campaign created by Orange City Council in partnership with the City of Orange RSL sub-branch. A number of people had mentioned that they couldn’t read the names of the men on banners as they drove, and were unable to walk the length of the CBD to do so. We thought it might be a nice tribute to remember these men ahead of Anzac Day.

With Anzac Day falling on a Thursday (our publishing day), deliveries of the April 25 edition of OCL may be slightly delayed but will be available from all your usual venues by early afternoon.

Inside this week’s edition, you will find the photographs and names of 40 servicemen from Orange killed in action while serving in the armed forces during wartime. The soldiers’ photos also adorn banners erected along Summer Street as part of an Orange City Council-initiated campaign to remember the sacrifice of our local servicemen.

Among these names is that of William Robert Clive Beasley.

Born in Lucknow in 1894, William was the second of seven children born to Edwin and Letitia Beasley.

His uncle, William Edwin Agland, was an alderman and mayor of East Orange in 1910.

William was one of the first to enlist when war broke out in 1914, and sadly, one of the first of the men from Orange to be killed in the conflict.

William enlisted in Sydney on August 20, 1914, barely a week after voluntary recruitment commenced.

He left in October 1914, to the Mena training camp in Egypt. Eventually joining the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Alexandria in April 1915, he was part of the first contingent of troops to land at Gallipoli on April 25.

William’s battalion advanced about two kilometres inland to a position near Courtney’s Post. When roll call was held on Thursday, April 29, William was not present and no one had seen him.

A court of inquiry held on March 24, 1916, found that William had been killed in action near Courtney’s Post, Gallipoli, on May 2, 1915, just one week before his 21st birthday.

William has no known grave, however, he is commemorated on Panel 17 of the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli in Turkey with others who have no known grave.

While William’s name now adorns one of the memorial banners in Summer Street, it’s not the only place in Orange where his name has been etched.

In 1919, Mr Arnold Caldwell, the principal of East Orange Public School, arranged the planting of a memorial avenue in Newman Park, adjacent to the school. The 16 trees, representing 16 former students who were killed in action or died of wounds during the war, were planted by a group of returned soldiers.

William is represented by one of these trees, as a former student of East Orange Public School.

In the early years after the planting of this memorial avenue, vandals allegedly

destroyed the nameplates attached to each tree, which signified who it was planted for. It was even considered at one point that Council remove the avenue, however strong protest by the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) saved the trees.

In August 1978, a memorial plaque attached to a large basalt stone was donated by the Orange RSL sub-branch and Orange City Council to replace the plaques. It is inscribed with the names of the 16 former students who gave their lives for their country: Herbert Henry Argall, Preston Edwin Argall, William Robert Clive Beasley, Oswald Cecil Je rey Baylis, Thomas Meynell Curtayne, William Joseph Coppock, Walter Thomas Cornish, Harold William Corkett, Arthur James Dein, John Arthur ‘Jack’ Earls, Edwin Hercules Fardell, Robert Clyde Jones, George Edward John Seers, Ernest Edward Tandy, Hector Edward Williams, and William Alexander Woods.

When news of William’s death reached home, the Orange Leader reported the following on Wednesday, May 26, 1916:

“Once again, we have to add to the list of illustrious dead from Orange. This time the names of Private William Robert Clive Beasley and Private Arthur Edward Davis occupy two lines in the scroll of honour as having given up their lives for

their country. There had always been a doubt as to the fate of these two lads, who were reported missing early in the campaign, and the best their relatives could hope for was that they had been taken prisoners by the Turks. With that thought always present, the mothers of both lads had ever a ray of sunshine in their dark hour of sorrow, which had the e ect of bearing them up with the hope of once more clasping them to their breasts. Alas, it was not to be, as Saturday’s casualty list brought news of their deaths on the field of action. We, who know them, are satisfied that they died with their faces to the foe, fighting grim earnestness to the last.

“They rose, responsive to their country’s call. And gave to their life, their best, their all.”

The article goes on to name the parents and families of each soldier, ending with a patriotic plea for others to join the cause they gave their lives for.

“(They) died as British soldiers only can die, fighting for that old rag, the Union Jack, which is the flag of the free, the flag of the brave, and the king of all the flags that fly beneath the sun. We lay a flower on each of their graves and ask those men of Orange who are eligible and are without encumbrance to step out and fill the gaps.”

Orange’s ANZAC dawn service will be held at Robertson Park at 6am, on April 25.

Remembering our fallen soldiers this ANZAC Day

For the past few weeks, banners have hung along Summer Street, each bearing the image and name of an Orange serviceman killed in action. They are just a handful of the more than 200 people from Orange who have died during foreign wars and each will be honoured with their own banner over the next few years as part of ‘The Local Fallen’ campaign created by Orange City Council in partnership with the City of Orange RSL sub-branch.

This Anzac Day, Orange will pause to remember these men and the sacrifice they, and so many others, made for their country and their loved ones.

Starting on page 23 of this edition, you will find a special commemorative 2024 Anzac Day pullout including the o cial Dawn and Morning Service Program, Anzac March route map, and two pages featuring the images and names of the 40 men adorning the banners in Summer Street.

The

local pilot program

connecting isolated families with community

It’s a surprisingly simple idea, but one that’s already made a significant di erence for many disadvantaged families in our community.

“The program was called ‘EDGE’ and that stood for Engage Discover Grow and Explore,” explained Maree Vaughan, a family case worker at the Orange Family Support Service.

It was through talking with their clients, that Maree and fellow caseworker Kristen Brooking came to realise just how isolated some people in the Orange were. That, through a lack of knowledge and a lack of transport, there were people who weren’t able to make the most of the parks, playgrounds or community services available to them.

Recruiting five families, Maree and Kristen put together an eight-week pilot program to try to tackle the barriers that were stopping people from getting out into the community with their children.

The pilot involved educating people about child-friendly cafes, playgrounds and free activities like storytime at the library, but most importantly how easy it was to get there by public transport.

“Transport was one of the biggest things,” said Kristen, “because we saw clients, without transport, they weren’t getting out and about at all… we had someone that didn’t know that North Orange even existed. They’re like, ‘Oh wow! There’s a Woolies up here and there’s all these houses — and they live in Orange. So that’s how isolated they actually are.”

Maree and Kristen reached out to Orange Buslines, where Manager David Lee saw the value of the pilot program and agreed to lend a hand, even o ering free bus vouchers to participants.

“We’d actually just asked about the bus timetable because… I don’t even know how to navigate it, so how I meant to teach people how to use it,” said Kristen.

“David was very lovely to o er his time and he came in and did information sessions to the participants, showed us how to get on to apps and things like that, and also o ered a private bus tour around town so we could see where the bus stops are, what can you access on the bus, and how you can use that $2.50 ticket to get everywhere.”

The response to the pilot has been overwhelmingly positive.

“It really did build their capacity to get out and about,” said Kristen. “Because we’ve had a couple of clients who would get the taxi downtown and back, that’s like 40 dollars. But then they couldn’t go out for the rest of the week because they couldn’t a ord it, so to see $2.50 can get you around all day was like, “Wow!”

“They just didn’t realise that’s how cheap it actually was for a bus ticket with the concession,” agreed Maree. “All the participants just went, ‘Wow, I never knew that and they’ve passed that knowledge on

to other people, so there’s a ripple e ect that we’ve noticed.”

For David, who only took on the manager role at Orange Buslines in January, the program was also a good exercise as he could see the need for better promotion of their services.

“Taking the group around… it got me thinking where can people get to in Orange on the bus and there are very few places you couldn’t get to, so it’s actually encouraged me to get out and promote that more,” David said.

After seeing what can happen in just eight weeks, Maree and Kristen are now trying to find a way to see the EDGE program continue.

“We haven’t been able to find any funding yet,” said Kristen, who would like to see the program run every school term.

“At this stage, there’s no funding for it to continue next term, which is a big shame, but we will do our report and our findings and try to apply for more… if there’s any out there that would be great!”

A garden party helping country kids

This year, the Country Education Foundation (CEF) Orange and District helped 32 students kickstart their post-high school education, with each receiving a share of $60,000.

“That’s our target most years to fundraise,” Chair of the CEF Orange and District Sue Rogan said.

“Once a student is supported by the CEF, they have the opportunity to attract more funding from the institution that they go to.”

The foundation was established to provide muchneeded financial assistance and support to local youth, to help them achieve their post-high school education, training, and vocation aspirations. Grants can be given to students for things such as laptops, travel, textbooks and accommodation.

CEF Orange and District is one of 45 branches under CEF, and has been o ering support to the community for 13 years.

“We recognise that the cost of rural students pursuing their post-high school goals is often much greater than those of their metropolitan counterparts, and that sometimes these costs can be prohibitive,” a spokesperson for CEF said.

Sue explained that while it may not be a lot of grant money provided, it gives the students a head start.

“We also support them in other ways, in terms of buddying them up with one of the committee members… If they want to ring us about a question or want to catch up for a co ee, they can do that. Most of them take up that opportunity when they come home, because most of them have gone away somewhere.”

Did you know that unclaimed optical health fund benefits don’t roll over into next year?

Did you know that unclaimed optical health fund benefits don’t roll over into next year?

Students who have benefited from the foundation are sprawled across Australia. From the University of Wollongong, to Canberra and Sydney University, TAFE in Wellington and CSU in Wagga, all the students have benefited from the foundations grants.

With this in mind, the CEF Orange and District fund-raises throughout the year, as well as accepting donations from local residents and businesses to provide financial grants to students who need the

extra helping hand.

“I’ve been the chair for three years, and in that time, we’ve relied purely on corporate and individual donations,” Sue said.

This weekend, the CEF Orange and District are raising money through an Autumn Garden Party at Anfield Gardens.

“The reason for that is twofold. Firstly it’s to get the message out there about CEF because there’s a lot of people in Orange who didn’t even know existed. And secondly, to raise some of the money that we need for the 2023-5 year cohort of applicants,” Sue said.

All proceeds go towards the foundation, and the $100 ticket price includes entry to the garden, entertainment by CEF grant recipients, a gourmet picnic lunch from Factory Espresso, a glass of local wine from See Saw wines, savoury and sweet treats, plus a bottle of water.

One of the major drawcards is a talk from Michael Bligh, one of Australia’s most experienced and qualified garden designers.

“Whether you are a budding gardener or not, you will enjoy this garden party with a di erence,” a spokesperson said.

Michael grew up on a grazing property near Goulburn, where his mother – the gardening author Beatrice Bligh – created one of Australia’s finest gardens. In 1965, it was considered the Champion Homestead Garden of NSW.

During the last 40 years, Michael has been personally involved with the design of well over 4500 gardens located throughout rural and metropolitan Australia.

As an indication of the quality of work Michael’s firm provides, a number of their gardens have been featured in magazines such as Belle, Highlife, Landscape Australia, Highlands Country Living and the Italian magazine Abitare which is sold throughout the world.

Michael will entertain guests with an interactive presentation, as well as a walk-and-talk session around Anfield Gardens.

‘Celebrate Autumn’ will be on Saturday, April 20, from 11am-4pm. Details of the event and how to donate to the Country Education Foundation Orange and District can be found on cef.org.au

THE GOOD ENOUGH PARENT Love

Life updates: Miss Nine lost her lone remaining school jumper the first day of the cold snap and has been very chilly since, in a shocking twist of events where she is being made to face the consequences of her own actions. Miss 15’s current passions in life are working out, gaming and overreacting to everything we say. Hubby has made it to the third round of his golf club championship and we are so very proud of him, although apparently this means I’m just expected to babysit his kids on Sunday mornings now? And me… well, it’s been a rough month.

My life changed five years ago when I sat, shellshocked in my doctor’s o ce, as he explained that my headaches were due to a brain tumour. In an instant I went from a tired mum juggling a tween, a pre-schooler, a full-time job and a husband I didn’t see enough of, to alarming uncertainty as the doctor’s words meant the future we’d been working our asses o for started tumbling down.

After the shock wore o , and we found out the time I had left was going to be measured in years, I set about making the most of every day. I made a bucket list and started checking things o . I quit my job and started writing every day. I posted incessantly to Facebook, tagging hubby in every photo so in years to come he’d have memories to look back on, and I annoyed all of my friends in the process. And most importantly I tried to become a force for good in this world. As a talented grant writer, excellent email author, and mediocre but acceptable baker, I set about helping people, charities and local organisations.

It was so important for our girls to see that the worst moments of our lives don’t have to define us, or turn our hearts cold. And there was a tiny piece of me that got caught in the bargaining phase and seemed to believe that if I could just be good-enough, then death wouldn’t dare take me.

But six weeks ago I passed out, and the MRI revealed a new and unrelated serious problem in my brain. It will mean surgery and/or radiation and this time I’m struggling to be brave.

There’s always a silver lining, though, and this one is love. The few people we’ve told have all responded with care, presence and endless o ers of help. Our little family has stopped posting online, and instead we write actual post it notes and sneak them into each other’s lunchboxes and work/school bags in the morning. I haven’t yelled at the kids once (I came close when Miss Nine came home jumper-less obviously). And hubby and I, who have spent 20 years sleeping next to each other separated by a wall of pillows and never cuddling, now fall asleep holding hands.

And so I’m back, after a six week break. There will still be a column because children still live in my house and teachers still hand out homework because they secretly hate parents and I accidentally wore the wrong outfit to a medical appointment last week and flashed a poor health worker who isn’t paid enough.

But why on earth would I share any of this publicly?

Why do I detail any of my f***-ups for people to read?

Because absolutely everyone is fighting a battle you can’t see. And sometimes, knowing you’re not fighting alone is exactly what you need.

ART REVIEW

Did you know that the new public artwork ‘Dancing with Bees’ on the side of the Civic Centre on Byng Street keeps real-time?

The top screen tells us the hour and the bottom screen shows the minutes.

If you look closely you will see a flashing brighter dot around the rim of the top screen indicating the current hour and a brighter dot around the rim of the bottom screen indicating the minutes. So the exact time of this photo was 11:49am.

Over a 24-hour period a di erent bee specimen appears in the top screen and slowly rotates for each hour.

These extraordinary images of bees include 11 native bee species and the European honeybee. There is a di erent bee for each hour. Each was photographed by the artist Zanny Begg from the vast Insect and Mite Collection located at the

NSW DPI Biosecurity Unit in Orange. Each image is assembled from up to 200 separate photographs using macro photographic equipment.

Through this artwork the artist reminds us that bees are a vital, and fragile part of our ecosystem and crucial for food production in our region. She also highlights the diversity, variety and beauty of the bee species that surround us. Scientific research shows that bees communicate with each other through dance-like movements when they return to the hive, sharing important information such as the direction and distance to food sources.

The dancers in the lower screen present a creative response to the bee in the top screen. Di erent dancers perform in response to each bee every hour of the day and night.

The movements and costumes were

Keeping time is easy with our ‘Bee Clock’ Kids Talk

choreographed to echo and interpret the movement, colours and pattern of that bee.

The dancers include young and emerging dancers from the Central West of NSW alongside leading dancers from across Australia. Local production team Little Image Co filmed the dancers in the Orange Civic Theatre in late 2023.

Zanny Begg professionally engaged all of the dancers as well as the local videography team. She majority-funded the project through grants that she secured from Creative Australia and Create NSW. Additional funding from a NSW Government Arts and Culture Infrastructure Grant awarded to Council for Public Art projects also ensured that the project could be realised.

FROM WALLAROOS TO LIONS: Rugby-loving pub owners take pride in local partnership

When the Orange City Lions take to the field this season they will once again do so with the Hotel Canobolas logo emblazoned on the orange jersey. It is a partnership that began three years ago when the prominent main street pub was purchased by the rugby-loving Sukkar family in partnership with The Point Group.

For Tony and Josephine Sukkar, founders of construction giant Buildcorp, investing in grassroots rugby is something they’ve done for more than 30 years, promoting all levels

of rugby at the club, state and national level, being the principal sponsor of the Australian women’s side, the Wallaroos.

“Three years ago, one of the first things we did was establish a connection with the Orange City Rugby Club,” said The Point Group CEO, Brett Robinson.

“The Sukkas family are very involved in Australian rugby… and they sponsor grassroots rugby across the eastern seaboard.

“They’ve got Buildcorp o ces in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and you’ll find they sponsor grassroots rugby in

every one of those cities.

“Wherever we go, both as The Point Group and as Buildcorp, we like supporting the community, we like supporting grassroots rugby.”

“And we’re really pleased to be the recipients of that hospitality,” said Orange City Rugby Cloub President Chris Whittaker. “It’s helping us across the board. Our junior numbers are swelling. We’re doing a lot of work up at the ground that we’ve had some funding for.. and we feel like it’s a really good connection for both parties, so we’re really pleased.”

The Point Group CEO, Brett Robinson, with Lions players Colin McGregor and Amy Caldwell, and (behind) club vice president Damon Bracey and president Chris Whittaker.

“I saw it when I was about 14, in Cameron’s window,” says Brian Wood, recalling the first time he saw the car he would spend the next few decades dreaming about.

The car in question was a modified FJ Holden, built by local panel beater Brian Keegan and placed on display in the window of Cameon’s Holden dealership in Summer Street, where Brian Wood’s father worked as a mechanic.

“Keegan, he was a panel beater and he used to do these in the ‘60s,” Brian says. “He was a very well-known person in the drag scene… He was the guy. He had the fastest FJ in NSW or even Australia and he used to go down to Castlereagh when there was the Castlereagh drag strip…

he was the first one in Orange, to my knowledge, who was into all this stu .” Having spent a long time thinking about the car in Cameron’s window, about 18 years ago, Brian set about building one of his own.

“I was only about 14 when I saw it, but I’d said to myself, I’m going to get one of those one day… and so I did!” Brian says, proudly showing o the end result in his garage.

“I got a good body from a bloke, but there is a lot of work in it… the guard and the bonnet has all been reshaped,” he continues, pointing out features of his dream car.

“Ronny Zelukovic did the back, he was very good with metal… and a guy who used

Brian’s looking to trade up to a new dream

to work for Turnbull and Townsen, he did the rest of the car and he was magic with materials!

“The engine’s a 202 Holden, it’s got a bigger head and a cam in it…all windows very lightly tinted, VR Commodore interior and French tail lights… 9-inch forward di , side blast exhaust… It has an early nitrous set-up that’s all connected, but I’ve never ever run it.

“To get it registered there wouldn’t be any problems, but you would have to get it engineered and I never wanted to put it on the street. When I built it, it was just for me.”

The whole build took about five years and cost roughly $50,000, says Brian.

“There is a lot of work in it! The interior was nearly $10,000 and there’s chrome

underneath… and you had to get craftsmen to do it. It was just one of those things that the ‘best of the best’ had to do it,” he explains.

But now it is time for someone else to enjoy the car he’s built, says Brian, who’s decided to sell his much-loved FJ. Partly, to make room in his overcrowded garage, but also because he’s looking to fund a new dream.

The public hearings of the Parliamentary Inquiry into the Response of Insurers to the Floods of 2022 are well underway.

There have now been 12 public hearings which aim to put the behaviour of insurers under the microscope, and highlight the experiences of policyholders before, during and after making claims.

I pushed hard to get this inquiry set up, and even raised it in Question Time by asking the Prime Minister whether he would back my calls to get the investigation off the ground.

Last week the Parliamentary Inquiry took evidence in Brisbane and Lismore.

In Lismore, I visited a pod village and got a real insight into the difficulties that residents are facing rebuilding their lives.

During the hearing, we heard shocking evidence from residents who had been treated appallingly by insurance companies.

HAPPY 2081! HAPPY NEPALESE NEW YEAR!

Last Saturday was Harmony Day in Orange and what better way to celebrate than with Nepalese New Year festivities!

The Nepalese community makes a valuable contribution to the life of our region and the New Year celebrations at Orange Showground

drew a large crowd with plenty of singing, dancing and delicious food. It was an honour to be a part of it!

It was interesting to learn that in the Nepalese calendar it’s now 2081!

So Happy Nepalese New Year and all the best for 2081!

In many different ways the Sikh community of Orange and our area is always working to make our region and the world a better place.

It was therefore a privilege to join in Orange’s very first Vaisakhi celebrations at Nashdale Hall last Sunday.

Vaisakhi celebrates the birth of the Sikh religion (Khalsa) and about 200 people came from as far away as Sydney to be part of it.

There was music, wonderful food, prayer, and performances of the Sikh martial art of Gatka (which I left to the experts!).

This week the Orange Sikh community has also taken the initiative of donating blood at the red cross Lifeblood Centre. That’s great work!

Congratulations to the Sikh community on such a successful first event - we look forward to many more Vaisakhi celebrations!

Irecently attended a community event hosted by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia in Orange.

For over 100 years the Guild has represented and promoted the value of community pharmacy in the Australian Healthcare System. This event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with local community pharmacists from across the Central West.

Thank you to the Guild for your warm welcome and to fellow event attendees who shared their stories on the importance of community pharmacies as part of our national health system and the positive impact they can have on all Australians.

LET’S TALK MONEY with DANIEL MCGREGOR

I Can Predict the Future… You Can Too!

You may never have realised it, but as you’ve gone through life you’ve been predicting the future along the way… and in many cases you’ve probably been quite good at it.

Think about it for a moment…

• When you choose to go out somewhere, you would normally be doing so because you’re predicting you’ll have a good time.

• When you decide to take a job, you’re likely predicting that it’s a job you feel will help you in your career or be more enjoyable than your current job.

• When you get married, you’re predicting that the person you love is the one you will spend the rest of your life with.

• When you buy a house and borrow a lot of money to do so, you’re predicting that you’ll be able to keep up the mortgage repayments and likely live there

for a long time.

Now, life has a habit of throwing some curveballs at us along the way, but many of our decisions are based on using the information we have available at the time to predict what will happen in the future.

We even have a special tool we use to help us with our predictions… we use a diary (or a calendar) to map out where we expect to be at certain points in time in the future.

What predictions are you making when it comes to your financial future?

The best way to predict your financial future is to create it! And the best way to create it is to have a plan.

We can’t predict what will happen, but we can predict what could happen and plan for those things based on reasonable assumptions. Hope is not a plan and failure to plan is planning to fail.

If you’d like to fi nd out more about how INDEPENDENT fi nancial advice could help you manage cash fl

These are only words… to get results requires action. And I can predict with a high degree of confidence that:

• 7 out of 10 people who read this will do nothing

• 2 out of 10 will think about doing something, and

• 1 out of 10 will ACTUALLY do something.

As Malcolm X said, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today”.

At the same time, the biggest regret of people over 65 is that they didn’t save more money while they were working, and their biggest fear is running out of money. What future are your current actions preparing you for?

If you want some help planning your financial future, give me a call and let’s start predicting the financial future you WANT to have, rather than leaving it to chance.

Cheers! Daniel

THE INNER CIRCLE WITH LYDIA SMITH

“I wanna be in the room where it happens,” sings Aaron Burr in the musical Hamilton. He is frustrated that he isn’t part of the political inner circle, with the important people doing things that really matter. The song is a great observation of the desire we feel to be accepted within the “inner ring” of whatever group matters to us at the time. Whether it’s the local mum’s group, the regulars at the gym, or the o ce colleagues, we all experience the longing to be one of that special “in” group. The Bible makes it very clear that there are no “inner rings” in God’s family. Instead, every person who trusts in Jesus, no matter who they are, is part of God’s family! There’s a great reminder in the book of Ephesians: we are no longer strangers to God but we are “fellow citizens” with everyone else who belongs to God’s family. And you can belong to God’s family because of what Jesus has done for you, not because you are in the “inner ring”. Every Christian is loved and a forgiven brother or sister of the Lord Jesus… there are no secondraters in his family!

Bell Shakespeare presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Shakespeare’s classic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream has been reawakened in this breathless Bell Shakespeare production, brimming with magic, mirth and mayhem.

Coming to Orange on Thursday, May 30, love will definitely be in the air that night. And it is contagious.

Besides the royal wedding, which is just days away, there are young lovers dreaming of enchanted futures together. Hermia and Lysander are besotted with one another, while Helena adores Demetrius. The only snag is that Demetrius loves Hermia – and he’s got Hermia’s father on his side. So nobody is happy. (Shakespeare wasn’t kidding when he said the course of true love never did run smooth.)

Determined to be together, Hermia and Lysander meet

in a moonlit forest with plans to elope. Following hot on their heels is Demetrius, who in turn is pursued by a lovelorn Helena. But the young lovers are not alone in the forest. Nick Bottom and his hapless bunch of tradies have gathered to rehearse a play to be performed at the royal wedding. And, hidden from human eyes, a mischievous sprinkling of faeries are also in the forest that night. The three worlds collide in an explosion of comic confusion that throws the future of all the lovers into jeopardy.

This production is quick as a shadow. Fast, funny and family-friendly, this is A Midsummer Night’s Dream reimagined.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed at Orange Civic Theatre on Thursday, May 30. Tickets at Ticketek or call 6393 8111.

REFRESHMENT: LIFEandTIMES

It’s the school holidays. Finally! I don’t know what it was about the first few months of the year, but it seems like it has been a long term. At the school gate last week, the conversations were all about how the kids were exhausted and the Easter long weekend lulled everyone into a false sense of rest. Since that long weekend the days have seemed to drag on endlessly. But the break is finally here. I am looking forward to some time o to rest and recharge after a busy couple of months. Perhaps you are, too. Or maybe you are at a stage where school holidays don’t really mean much except for the extra noise and bustle around the place as kids look for activities to pass the time. For some families school holidays mean an added stress of trying to juggle work and childcare. For others it can mean much of the same. But for many people it marks a time of refreshment. As time to recharge. This is certainly true for me. But what is it about refreshment that can seem so elusive at times? A break may promise much but deliver little. Plans may fall through. The catchup with family may not turn out to be what you had hoped for. So where do you find refreshment? I am not just speaking about the physical refreshment that we may look for, but the mental recharge. For the mind to stop being consumed by the regular buzz of life. But there is also the spiritual

refreshment that we long for, too. For that deep sense of peace right down at the depths of who we are. In the very core of ourselves, in our heart or soul. It is this sort of refreshment that seems hardest to find. Perhaps the reason why this sort of deep refreshment is di cult to find is because we look for it in the wrong place. We look for it in ourselves. We think that if we just focus inward, we will eventually reach that place of refreshment. But I believe that to find true rest, we must look in the opposite direction. We must look beyond ourselves to someone else where we can find true refreshment. In Psalm 23, a psalm that is perhaps the most well-known by people regardless of whether you know The Bible or not, it speaks about refreshment in a way that is di erent to how we might seek to find refreshment on our own. It says this in the opening few lines:

‘The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.’ What David, the author of this beautiful poem, says is that true refreshment is found in the Good Shepherd. It is a remarkable truth that as a Christian, I found most comforting. That my refreshment is not found in me, but in God who not just leads, guides and sustains me, but refreshes my very soul.

The Beyond Bitumen Rally was founded by Peter and Trish Fehom whose daughter Beth succumbed to depression in 2005. An experienced 4WD enthusiast, Peter saw the rally as a way to support the life-saving work of Beyond Blue.

My brother and all went on the first one,” said Chris Whittaker. “That was now 10 years ago and there were 12 cars, now it’s like 200 cars.”

The 2024 Beyond Bitumen Rally got underway on Friday, April 12 in Gundagai, with participants heading to Echuca, Tocumwal, Gri th, West Wylong, Young and Boorowa before finishing in Golbourn on Monday morning.

Every cent raised on the rally goes directly to Beyond Blue. If you would like to support the cause and the Whittakers Contracting team’s fundraising e orts, scan the QR code or visit beyondbitumen.com.au

Author talk: Sha ered Branches by Sco Honeyse

Just in time for ANZAC Day, Scott Honeysett is bringing his book Shattered Branches to Orange City Library.

The Honeysett families of Central West NSW, and beyond, became part of Australian history when 12 of their sons volunteered for service with the Australian Imperial Force.

From the original Gallipoli landing, to the deserts of Palestine and the Western Front, their stories span the duration of Australia’s war.

Shattered Branches o ers a frank account of their time away and, for those who returned, their lives back home in twentieth-century Australia.

Shattered Branches: 12 Stories from a Family in War and Peace will be showcased by author Scott Honeysett at Orange City Library, Saturday, April 20 at 2pm. Please book online or call Orange City Library on 6393 8132.

Books will be available for sale ($30 cash only) and signing at the book launch.

THUMBS UP and thank you to all my family and friends. As they have given me so much love and support, with the recent passing of my dearly loved husband. Thank you… you know who you are.

THUMBS DOWN to the lady walking past an aged care facility who got caught redhanded by sta stealing COVID tests.

THUMBS UP to the Orange Girl Guides, you are such a respectful and responsible group, your leaders must be so proud!

THUMBS DOWN to the people who think pedestrians should wait at the crossing outside Woolworth’s on Anson Street until a group is formed. There is no law that requires people to do so. It’s a pedestrian crossing, not a set of tra c lights. And thumbs down to the Council for putting up the sign in the first place, giving motorists false hope that people would wait until a group is formed to use a simple pedestrian crossing.

THUMBS UP to the waitsta at Hansel and Gretel Bakery. The most delicious cakes and pastries, lovely co ee and yummy meat pies. Glad you are there.

THUMBS UP to the young female optometrist at Orange Westfund from two elderly people. The eye examinations were extremely thorough, the information provided was excellent and her professional and caring attitude was reassuring.

THUMBS UP to Ursula at Pillow Talk for her wonderful service and advice when we purchased a new Doona, she went out of her way to ensure we were getting the correct product, yes Ursula we are warm.

THUMBS DOWN to those school students whose poor behaviour in an opportunity shop was noted by customers, volunteers and sta . A very poor reflection on yourselves and your school.

THUMBS DOWN to the fast food chain outlet that took 30 minutes to prepare a warm co ee and cold raisin toast. Extra hot co ee had been requested.

THUMBS UP to Tom and the team at Elite Diesel, who diagnosed my car quickly and rectified the problem, with great results. Many thanks!

THUMBS UP to Peter at Betta Electrical Orange for his exceptional customer service. His friendly, helpful assistance was greatly appreciated.

THUMBS UP to the lady who apparently saw my disappointment at just missing out on a goat curry at the TAFE food sale on Monday, April 8. As I was leaving she reached into her bag and produced a pack which she presented to me. I was touched, and more so when she refused to accept payment for it. There are some caring people out there still. It made an old man’s day.

THUMBS UP to the “Good Samaritans” who came to my aid after I had a massive fall outside North Orange Woolworths. I am 83 years old, I hit the ground with my face and the bleeding was bad. A gentleman and a lady came immediately to my aid. The lady assisted in stopping the bleeding, while the gentleman, after covering me and shielding me from the rain with an umbrella, called an ambulance and my grandsons. For 20 minutes both knelt on the ground to comfort me. I cannot thank both enough for their caring help. I am very grateful. I su ered a broken cheekbone, fractured wrist, received five stitches and a concussion, but I’m on the way to healing. God bless you both!

THUMBS UP and a very big thank you to the very honest person who found my husband’s wallet in the North Orange Woolworths car park on April 8 and handed it to the sta at Woolworths. Also thank you to the sta at Woolworths for looking after it - very much appreciated.

THUMBS UP to the helpful lady sta member at RMS Service NSW for helping mum, a self-refunded retiree, with the completion of the Seniors Energy Rebate for this financial year. We were unaware that mum was entitled to this rebate and the one o extra payment of $700 for the year. This rebate will be very helpful to go towards her very expensive electricity bills. Thanks ever so much!
