Easter is here and I assure you that all of us at OC Life are eagerly looking forward to enjoying an extended break from the office. Long weekends are a bit of a mixed blessing when you work to weekly deadlines. We still have the same work to do, just fewer days to do it.

This April is certainly packed with events. Immediately on the heels of Easter, we have F.O.O.D. Week in Orange and it’s sure to be a busy couple of weekends as we hear many of the signature events have sold out. There are still plenty of ways to get involved and experience F.O.O.D. Week, starting with the opening event, the night markets in Robertson Park. Before I called Orange home, I was a punter visiting for the night markets and it’s an event that certainly left me with a great impression of this city.

Then on April 27, it’s the 152 Orange Show! We’ll have more on what our show committee has planned in the coming weeks.

Speaking of the show, congratulations to Orange’s very own Paris Capell who is the runner-up in this year’s The Land Sydney Royal AgShows NSW Young Woman competition. It’s apparently the first time an Orange woman has placed in the competition and Paris is over the moon about it. Emily Middleton had a chat with Paris on Tuesday and you can read all about it inside.

You will notice that once again we are missing our contribution from ‘The good-enough parent’ Emily Thompson. Em hasn’t been in the best of health these past few weeks and we wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her column in our pages again soon.

We hope all our readers have an enjoyable Easter weekend however you spend it!

F.O.O.D. Week 2024: Shining a light on Australia’s longest-running regional food event

It has been a staple event in Orange for over 30 years and is said to be Australia’s longest-running regional food event. From humble beginnings back in 1991, F.O.O.D. (Food Of Orange District) Week is now acclaimed as one of Australia’s top ten foodie attractions.

Kickstarting the 2024 F.O.O.D. Week program is the highly anticipated Night Market on April 5, an always popular event that showcases the region’s coolclimate wines and high-quality food.

After poor weather forced a change of venue to the Naylor Pavilion at the showgrounds, F.O.O.D. Week president Charlotte Gundry is hoping this year’s night markets will get to go ahead in the usual venue of Robertson Park.

“Fingers crossed for amazing weather, that beautiful autumn sunshine,” Charlotte said. “But we have that backup plan in place if needed.”

Charlotte said the response to all this

year’s events has been really positive, with many already sold out.

In particular, the ‘Shine the Light on Local Producers’ events are proving popular, she said of the series of handpicked “show, tell, and taste” workshops that feature local growers and food producers.

The intimate producer events are being held on a number of dates across the festival, in the Orange CWA Hall.

“There will be about 20-odd producers, some coffee, and breakfast for people to just come down. It’s a very relaxed, informal morning where you just, if the weather’s lovely, bring a picnic blanket and sit on the grass and listen to music,” Charlotte said.

...Fingers crossed for amazing weather, that beautiful autumn sunshine,” Charlotte said. “But we have that backup plan in place if needed...

“It’s really exciting for all the producers involved,” Charlotte said.

To finish off the festival a local favourite, the Producers Market, will be held in Cook Park on Sunday, April 14.

Amidst a cost-ofliving crisis and rising interest rates, Charlotte and the committee were cautious of the impact these factors would have on festival goers. She said she understands that discretionary spending is challenging for people at the moment, but the broad array of options has meant just about everybody can get involved.

“In terms of affordability, the park event is free, the ‘Shine the Light’ events are $20, the entry to the night market is

$10, and children are free to that event… Then you’ve obviously got your more expensive options,” Charlotte said.

“So I think it’s important to think about that broad offering, making sure some of the things that you’re doing are acceptable. But we are also under pressure with the costs rising and the cost of hire, and all the costs of food in general has gone up. So we are under some sort of similar pressure.”

Even if you’ve missed out on tickets for the sold-out events, Charlotte said not to fret, as there are many other ways to get involved in the festival.

“Definitely check out the whole programme, because if you’ve missed out on signature event tickets, there’s still some options available,” she said.

“But just going out and enjoying being in Orange in autumn and going to your local restaurants or visiting a cellar door you’ve never visited before... it’s a great time to be out in the region.”

From the tree to the table: making the most of the abundant

seasonal

FLocal orchardist and Hillside Harvest owner, Paula Chanock, believes it has also left people with a desire to better understand where their food comes from.

“During Covid, people realised about the supply chain and just where what they were consuming was actually coming from,” says Paula, whose family have been horticulturalists in the Nashdale region for four generations.

Paula says Purchasing Hillside Harvest two years ago was also a result of the pandemic, as previously, they relied solely on “pick your own” sales and selling at farmers markets.

“In Covid, we couldn’t go to the markets for 13 weeks, so we decided we needed to have a bit more control over our whole supply line and be able to move our fruit if

something like that happens,” she explains.

“So now we’ve got this beautiful shop where we sell our fresh fruit from all year round.”

Whether in her Hillside Harvest store or at farmer’s markets like the weekly East Orange Producers Market, Paula says that she is increasingly talking to people eager to know more about the food they are buying.

“The people I talk to at markets, they really want to know, ‘Where was it grown?’, ‘Where and when was it grown?’,” she says.

This growing interest in the provenance of what we are consuming is a trend that’s being noticed by longtime customers of Paula’s: Jasmin Bond of Greentrees Gourmet Preserves and Robin Marshall of Just Homegrown. Both women are local producers of preserved fruits, jams, chutneys, pickles and more, who have been selling at local markets for decades.

“Customers, they want to know, ‘ Where are you from?’, ‘Where’s the food from?’ And it is wonderful to be able to say that

produce on our own

doorstep

we know exactly where they come from,” Robin says.

A high school hospitality teacher of 40 years, Robin says she is also seeing an increase in people wanting to know more about what to do with the vast array of di erent varieties of produce and products available.

“People are looking for ways to save money and get better value out of what they buy and understand more about what they buy,” she says.

“And people are wanting to do cooking classes. They come to me all the time asking now because they know of my teaching background or my food background. They buy something and go, ‘Actually, how do I cook it? What do I do with it?’”

Jasmin Bond laughs about the fact she gets called on to teach the “oldfashioned” preservation techniques with people taking more interest in sustainable living.

“I come from an older generation where you value what you grow and you don’t waste — we live in a very wasteful society

— and that was one thing Mum wouldn’t allow. You didn’t waste your food,” she says.

This Orange FOOD Week, Paula, Robin and Jasmine will all be sharing their knowledge at a series of workshops at Hillside Harvest. The workshops will focus on the humble pear from the characteristics of di erent varieties to how to use them in cooking, and Jasmin will be teaching the age-old craft of preserving them using the Fowler Vacola Method.

“Paula has generously opened her facility to us so that people can actually come out and experience where the original products come from and how it’s grown,” Robin says.

“I mean, there are seven di erent varieties of pairs. I didn’t even know that and I’ve lived here for 25 years. And they’re all di erent. They all taste di erent, have di erent characteristics, and you use them for di erent purposes.” Details of the workshops can be found at www.orange360.com.au/Events

An autumn feast for garden lovers!

Orange’s first-ever Edible Garden Trail has been a huge success with garden lovers spending the weekend exploring some 15 open gardens on display.

Garden host Allan Adams, Edible Garden Trails creator Susanne Rix, host Jocelyn Adams, and organiser Mysie Harper.

The weekend-long event celebrated the many diverse ways that residents of Orange and surrounds grow food in their backyards. From amateur gardens on small town blocks, to a 19-acre property, there was plenty to look at and learn from.

Orange’s Edible Garden Trail coordinator Mysie Harper said the first year of the event was a hit with both locals and visitors.

“The ticket sales were about double our expectations,” Mysie said. “There was a lot of enthusiasm, and there was definitely something for everyone. There were very planned and established gardens, or newer gardens with just a big mixture of wonderful ornamental plants, and people with a couple of vegetable boxes in their back garden.”

For Mysie, it was the dedication and shared love of gardening that made the weekend so special.

“I think the gardens are fascinating because they just say so much about the personality of the owner,” she said.

While most of the edible trailgoers were locals, a number of visitors came from across the state to have a stickybeak. Mysie said this can be attributed to Orange being the first in the Central West to set up an Edible Garden Trail.

A highlight of the event was the Orange Public School garden, which featured an impressive number of edible plants grown by the students from scratch.

“It was just amazing to see how well projects could be created in a school garden. And it was interesting to see the di erence and balance between ornamental and edible,” Mysie said.

The event’s inspiration came from the Blue Mountains Edible Garden Trail, founded in 2018. Mysie and her fellow coordinators had been attending the trail for some years now, sparking the idea to bring one to Orange.

“It was an incredibly enthusiastic event in the Blue Mountains last year so we decided to do our own, kind of basing it on the model that the Blue Mountains do. Now there’s 20 across Australia,” Mysie said.

Funds collected from the event will be going back into community garden projects.

Pop-up pods taking the risk out of following your business dream

For start-up business owners, moving into the retail space can be daunting. Especially if you’ve only ever been online, or moved around between markets, setting up an in-person shopfront can sometimes be a gamble. Eliminating part of the risk factor, Orange City Council’s Retail Pod Project is aiding business owners looking to take that next step.

The program has been running since 2022, with Council o cering converted shipping containers in McNamara Street as ‘pop-ups’ or short-term retail spaces.

“It provides a space for people, especially people who have a home business or a hobby business that is getting really big, or even a farm gate business, to try their hand at face-to-face retail in an inexpensive and not contractuallybinding environment,” explained advisor at Business HQ Rob Drage.

Businesses who are granted a space bring their product in, set up displays, their pricing policies, and pay a rent of around $200 a week, which includes electricity, water and air conditioning.

Part of the agreement includes advisory sessions from Business HQ, for the term of the lease.

“We might advise them on selling skills or on some of

their pricing policies,” Rob said. “Just recently we went through and cost one business’s entire menu. So he could make sure that he had the right cost-base for the price he was charging.”

Just finishing up her stint in one of these pods is owner of Buku Nola Snoballs, Jessica Hannon. Jessica utilised the pods on two separate occasions, and has just finished up, deciding to turn to a more mobile appraoch.

“It allows for some business owners to test out the market,” Jessica said. “That was very important for us, because this business is not only very seasonal, but I would say it’s relatively new. Like I know Australia has snow cones… but it’s a really di erent product.”

Jessica comes from New Orleans, Louisiana, where snowballs or snow cones are a summer staple. The crushed ice with flavoured syrup on top is an American delicacy, and Jessica wanted to share her culture with Orange locals.

“The flavours are a lot more true to their name, like a strawberry doesn’t taste like the colour red,” she explained. “So once people get in here and they see that it’s a di erent product, we’ve had a lot of repeat people.”

Buku Nola – standing for “lots” and “New Orleans, Louisiana” – was adorned in artwork straight from Jessica’s home town. Colourful, quirky, and a bit of fun, Buku

Nola became a bit of a staple in the McNamara Street community.

But realising her niche once school went back and the colder weather came in, Jessica decided the time was right to shut-up shop and move to the mobile space.

“We will be focused in the Greater Sydney area like Penrith: we’ll show up for the weekly footy competitions… we are planning to do the Sydney Easter Show 2025, then things like the Bathurst Royal Show next year, Bathurst 1000, Elvis Parkes festival, Millthorpe markets,” Jessica said.

Business HQ has also aided Jessica beyond her experience in the pod. Rob explained that research has gone into looking at vans and other options for Buku Nola, including looking at the business’s marketing strategy.

“We were looking at the market, the approach, and di erent options in growing their business. And one of those options was looking at more of a mobile facility, and an events catering-type facility,” he said.

“They have a checklist, and so it’s all in one place,” Jessica said. “They’re really good about that. (Rob’s) even o ered to help us with finding funding for a van.”

Buku Nola can be found at the upcoming Millthorpe Markets on April 7. Follow Buku Nola on Facebook to stay up to date with their movements.

Men’s Shed garden growing for a good cause

When Chris Weale retired he was encouraged by friends to come along to the Borenore Nashdale Community Men’s Shed, but knocking up bits and pieces out of wood just wasn’t something that appealed to him.

Instead, Chris decided to put his passion for gardening to good use.

“I’ve always been interested in horticulture and I’ve grown veggies since I was six years of age,” Chris said.

“I joined the men’s shed two years ago… I was encouraged to come along but I didn’t

do woodwork or metal work and those sorts of things so I said I’d start a veggie garden.”

This is the first year Chris has planted his garden, which is about 200 square metres and has produced a bounty of beans, tomatoes, sweet corn, zucchinis, pumpkins, watermelons, and rockmelons.

“I try to keep it fairly simple… those sorts of vine crops look after themselves and you don’t have to have a lot to do with them, it’s mainly the tomatoes that take a lot of time to pick,” he said.

While some of the fresh produce is taken by men’s shed members, all the excess grown gets donated to FoodCare Orange,

who make it available to those struggling to keep food on the table.

FoodCare Orange President Lee Cook said they receive donations of produce from a number of local gardeners and it is all very welcome.

“Home gardeners bring all sorts of stu , both fruit and veggies, and it’s great that it comes in,” Lee said. “It adds to the fresh stock that we make available to people and, generally, people really like and appreciate the stu that comes out of gardens as it’s much nicer than most of your commercial stu .”

Lee encouraged any local gardeners with excess produce to consider donating it to

FoodCare rather than letting it go to waste.

“I’m hearing a lot of home gardeners saying, ‘Oh, we’ve got all these tomatoes! We’re going to have to pickle them or something.’ Well, don’t just keep them for yourself, bring something down to FoodCare,” he said.

“Anyone can drop in stu anytime during our shopping hours, we’re more than happy to have them do that and the people who are shopping there are more than happy to get nice fresh produce.”

FoodCare Orange is located at 142 March Street and is open every Tuesday to Friday morning from 10.30am to 1pm and Thursday afternoons from 4.30pm to 6pm.

CLOSING PARTY

Orange’s very own Paris Capell has come second in this year’s The Land Sydney Royal AgShows NSW Young Woman competition.

It’s the first time an Orange woman has placed in the competition, and Paris couldn’t be prouder.

“I was not expecting that at all, I am absolutely over the moon,” she said. “It has been an amazing experience.”

Passionate about soil science, Paris is a young professional Project O cer for Climate Vulnerability Assessment, working for the Department of Primary Industries.

She said the reason she got involved with the Orange Show in the first place, was her passion for getting soil judging adopted in local shows.

“I’ve been working at the Orange, Blayney, and soon Eugowra young judges development days to try and teach students about how to identify, what we look for when we’re farming soils, and how to look up soil health,” Paris explained.

“So I’m hoping by the time Sydney Royal rolls around next year, it’ll be a statewide competition that students can enter and we can really promote some of those aspects around soil.”

Paris ‘over the moon’ after making history at Sydney Royal

Currently in the big smoke lapping up her Sydney Royal success, Paris explained how the Young Woman Competition had always been a dream of hers to compete in.

“It used to be called ‘showgirl’… and I guess growing up I’ve always seen the Orange young woman or showgirl, and I just thought that one day, I really want to be that person,” Paris said.

“I wanted to be the intelligent, passionate young woman representing my community.

I was born and bred in Orange, I’ve grown up there my whole life, and then went to Canberra for uni. It wasn’t until I came

home, when I sort of settled into a job back home that I realised it was time for me to support my show society.”

Paris put her hand up to compete last year, alongside three other young Orange women.

“We talked about our rural knowledge, community involvement, your personality,” she said.

“From there, if you win you go to the zone level. So for me it was the western region, and three of them go through to Sydney Royal.”

VETS

Starting her week at Sydney with an interview, Paris said three judges from the Royal Agricultural Society asked questions about renewable energy and agriculture.

“It’s really topical at the moment with the big wind farm out at Molong,” she said.

“We got to speak about agricultural innovation, where we think about the future of how show societies are going, so they’re really just testing your general knowledge of the community.”

Paris said throughout the week, judges were looking at competitors’ interactions with other women and people in the community. All leading up to an on stage interview, Paris said judges are looking for a well-rounded woman.

This year’s NSW Young Woman winner was Domonique Wise from Taree, with Paris as runner-up out of the 15 women in the finals.

“The 15 finalists to get to Sydney were from all across rural and regional New South Wales. Over the week we’re given the opportunity to bond together and make some amazing friendships,” Paris said.

The 152nd Orange Show will be held on Saturday, April 27.

“From the sorting table they are then pushed l into what they call a ‘singulator’,” he continued, indicating a spinning circular hopper that feeds the containers — one at a time — onto a narrow conveyor belt which runs through a barcode scanner.

“The bar code reader then reads what type of material it is and then by air it is driven into either glass or aluminium and plastic bins.”

When Wangarang spoke to Orange City Life about the new bulk container return

But you can now claim your refund in cash, Baden said.

“That’s changed. The public really has driven what they want from us… so now as soon as you get your ticket from the machine you can get cash from the counter up to $500,” he said.

“Over $500 transactions are EFT, just for security — and that’s 5,000 cans and bottles in one transaction.”

They have already had a few transactions that large, Baden said, predicting that they will pass the one million container milestone by the end of next week.

“We’ve done 600,000 bottles and cans as of yesterday,” Baden said on Friday (March 22).

For Wangarang, the depot also provides employment opportunities and an income for locals with disabilities, he added.

“We use our supported sta to help out so it provides them with employment as well,” he said.

“And every cent we make out of this goes to help our disabled sta to support them.”

On Wednesday, March 27, Wangarang Industries held a small o cial opening for the new facility, but there is also a public Grand Opening planned for early in April.

MAJOR PARTY COP OUT!

AS KATTER AND GEE BRING ON VOTE TO GIVE FARMERS AND CONSUMERS A FAIR GO, LABOR SAYS NO AS COALITION MPs SCURRY OUT OF CHAMBER

This week in Parliament, the Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and I brought on debate and a vote for our Reducing Supermarket Dominance Bill 2024.

The

WHY WE NEED THIS BILL

It’s very clear to everyone that right around this country of ours, supermarkets giants have way too much power. Things have to change.

Our farmers are crying out for a fair go and a better deal, and so are our consumers who are at breaking point.

It’s an urgent issue because we are in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, and this Bill would do something about it. Australia is sick of the talk and the inquiries that have been going on for years. We need action.

OIn these difficult economic times, we need to be putting the interests of farmers and consumers ahead of the interests of the supermarket giants which are reaping in massive profits.

WHEN GIVEN A CHANCE TO WALK THE WALK, THE COALITION LEGGED IT OUT OF THE CHAMBER

This week, all members of the House of Representatives were given a chance to stand up to the supermarket giants. Bob and I wanted all major parties to support this motion and this Bill.

Just as the debate kicked off, all of the Coalition MPs legged it out of the chamber, and not one single Coalition MP had the courage and the conviction to return when the vote was called.

Instead of supporting their communities and standing up to the supermarket pigs and hogs, they scurried out of the chamber, skipping out on the vote.

Disappointingly, the Labor Party then voted against it.

n the weekend I participated in Orange's Rainbow Festival walk! There was a massive turnout for it with hundreds participating, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Orange.

During the opening of the festival, I bumped into an old friend and colleague who spoke to me about the hardships and nastiness his son has had to endure as a gay man. It highlighted the need for compassion, understanding, and tolerance.

It was terrific to see the community come together to celebrate the fact that everyone of us is unique and that we all have a valuable contribution to make to our communities and our country. Our shared humanity unites and connects us all.

Only the independents and crossbenchers walked the walk, and backed it.

THE MAJOR PARTIES ARE ALL JUST HOT AIR AND PORKIES

When given the opportunity to support farmers and consumers, the major parties proved they’re all just hot air and porkies.

The National Party has been talking a big game on this issue but dogged it when it came time to vote, as did the Liberal Party.

The Coalition MPs, like those in the Labor Party, were all under party orders to oppose our game-changing Bill.

It shows a complete lack of ticker from the major parties.

It once again exposes the hypocrisy of the major parties who say one thing to the media, and then do another thing when it comes time to vote in Parliament.

It also shows the importance of having Independent Members in Parliament, because none of the major parties had the ticker to back up their words and vote in favour of this vital law.

EUGOWRA CLASSIC CARS A GREAT SUCCESS!

Classic Cars In Eugowra last Friday evening was AWESOME!

Dozens of classic cars from all over the region made the trip to Eugowra for the unveiling of the re-restored flood damaged classics from Eugowra and Canowindra!

The proud owners talked us through the painstaking restoration work before the covers were taken off.

What a special night! So many great cars and so many great stories.

Thank you to everyone who made the night so memorable! Lots of folks have been suggesting it should be an annual event!

PRIME MINISTER VISITS EUGOWRA: FURTHER FUNDING REQUESTED

Last week the Prime Minister visited the amazing community of Eugowra where I raised the urgent need for more disaster funding.

I’m very concerned that the $100 million dollars pledged by the State and Federal governments will not be enough and that some in our community will be left behind. Top of my agenda for the day was to make sure the PM understands the need for more funding from the state and federal governments for storm and flood recovery.

The region is grateful for the current package but the reality is that it’s clear that it won’t be enough and we can’t be leaving people behind. I

pointed out that with budget season approaching, now is the time to get more funding moving.

Last year in question time I asked the PM if he would return to Eugowra. He promised he would and the deadline was the end of March.

The Prime Minister and I visited the home of Max and Kay Jones which has undergone a stunning transformation since the destruction of November 14th 2022.

The PM met with many Eugowra locals, including members of the Progress Association. He also got a look at some of the re-restored classic cars that were unveiled in Eugowra that evening!

In question time this week I also put the hard word on the PM for more funding.

ART REVIEW

Public Artwork Celebrates Many Colours of Orange

This artwork, ‘Interrupted Spectrum’ by Liz Shreeve on the Woolworths building on Anson Street, celebrates the diversity of the people of Orange while also presenting a dazzling play of light and colour.

“I had in mind when I made this work that the colours would reflect the many di erent people of Orange” says Shreeve, “with the idea that it takes the inclusion of all to complete the full spectrum or rainbow.”

“Many of my works can be read on two levels” she adds, “an aesthetic or scientific level, and a symbolic or social level.”

Brilliantly using the existing brickwork structure that was once painted a dull grey, Shreeve transformed the wall with her multi-coloured artwork consisting of graded steps along the spectrum.

The work is both bold and subtle, depending on which direction you’re travelling along the street. If you visit the artwork you’ll notice that Shreeve

only painted the colours on one side of the rectangular columns so that on a sunny day the reverse sides are lit up purely by reflected, coloured light. The colours progress along the rainbow, but occasionally Shreeve shu es them slightly, interrupting the spectrum.

I love the way this artwork presents a seemingly simple solution for an overlooked wall in the Colour City while also delivering a visually striking e ect with an uplifting message.

This is another example of the way our Public Art projects continue to add colour and interest to our urban spaces. ‘Interrupted Spectrum’ is one of eleven public artworks completed as part of Orange City Council’s Future City program, with major support from a NSW Government Infrastructure Grant.

THE GREAT PROMISE OF EASTER

What are your plans for Easter this year? I know for us, we always have a big lunch with all the family, an egg and spoon race and, of course, a massive Easter egg hunt. All the kids run around the yard, climbing trees, and lifting rocks, trying to find every last chocolate egg. But sometimes we can get a bit too caught up with the chocolate and festivities and forget the reason we have Easter in the first place: Jesus.

To Christians, Easter is the most important event in our calendar; yes, more important than Christmas! It marks the promise Jesus made to us by dying on the cross for our sins, that is when we turn our backs on God and try to live life our own way. The promise he made was eternal life. Jesus dying on the cross and being brought back to life three days later, allows us to have a relationship with him, starting here on Earth and continuing in heaven after we die. So, this Easter, as you search for all those hidden eggs, take the opportunity to think about this promise and how it a ects you.

LAUNCH CELEBRATES FINAL TWO PUBLIC ART PROJECTS

The final two pieces of Orange City Council’s Future City public art project have been unveiled.

Zanny Begg’s Dancing with Bees and Daniel Templeman’s Aperture were officially launched on Wednesday night.

Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said the works capped off a four-year project to reinvigorate the central business district and activate public spaces following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We now have 10 public murals, installations and sculptures, produced by local, regional and established Australian

Youth

artists, right here in the Orange CBD for everyone to enjoy for years to come,” Cr Hamling said.

Located on the outside of the Orange Civic Theatre, Dancing with Bees consists of digital imagery and video shown 24 hours a day on two circular screens. It features videos of local and visiting dancers filmed by local production company Little Image Co, as well as a series of high-resolution images of native bees photographed by the artist at the Insect and Mite Collection at the NSW DPI Biosecurity Unit in Orange. The two screens work as a clock and are designed to keep real time.

Aperture is a light installation that consists of a series of ceiling-mounted geometric forms fitted with LED lighting designed to create a sense of movement along the laneway between the Orange Central Square Shopping Centre car park and Summer Street. It will transform the rundown laneway into a brighter, safer space and aims to create a sense of wonder and delight for pedestrians.

Orange City Council’s Services Policy Committee Chair, Cr Melanie McDonell is looking forward to seeing the last two works in place.

“Last year in Orange around 500 people took part in Youth Week activities. It was a great success.”

“Both works will be outstanding additions to the city’s public art collection. As well as being visually stunning, Dancing with Bees shares the importance of bees to our environment and celebrates the talent of our local dance community, while Aperture will transform a dark and unwelcoming space into an immersive site of play and experimentation,” Cr McDonell said.

Renewable energy developments, particularly the controversial wind farm at Kerrs Creek, have stirred considerable debate and discord within affected communities. I voiced the community's apprehensions in Parliament, advocating for a balanced and considerate approach to such projects.

As a former police prosecutor, I brought a unique and informed perspective to the discussion on the NSW Government's Bail and Crime Amendment Bill 2024. While endorsing diversionary initiatives for youth in our Orange electorate, I also argued for stricter bail laws to address the issue of repeat offenders committing serious crimes. I was pleased to see the inclusion of "post and boast" clauses in the new bail legislation, a proposal I had previously suggested, aiming to bolster community safety against juvenile crime.

Throughout these discussions, my priority has remained the wellbeing and security of our regional communities, advocating for measures that protect and support our residents.

Chris Gryllis in Real Estate

selling properties in orange since 1974
Local real estate agent Chris Gryllis celebrates an incredible milestone in 2024, marking 50 years since he first began selling properties in Orange.

“50 years — it has been quite an experience!” says Chris, sitting in his McNamara Lane office. Surrounding him on each wall are numerous photographs, plaques and mementos from his active community involvement over the decades.

A former Orange City Councillor and passionate Rotarian, Chris is a tireless advocate for Orange and has always been a regular supporter of many charitable local causes.

“I feel I was privileged to be able to come to Orange,” he continues. “And real estate was something I discovered early on my arrival that I can do. It gave me the freedom to mix and mingle with the community and be part of the community, which I did.”

Originally from the Greek island of Patmos, Chris immigrated to Australia in 1962, joining his brothers, Michael and Theo in Orange.

“I was working with my brothers in the food industry,” recalls Chris. “We had the Orange Restaurant, run by my late brother Theo, there was Jim’s Cafe and then my brother Michael had the Tourist Hotel, what’s now the Orange Hotel.

“Then I was running the Orange Food Bar at 307 Summer Street. It was the former Carlton Cafe next to the Australian Theatre and there’s a lot of history in that restaurant!” continues Chris recalling a time when Bee Gees performed in the theatre and afterwards came into the Orange Food Bar where he made them milkshakes.

But Chris says he felt drawn to work in real estate and in 1974 he was given that chance.

Returning to Orange from a visit back to Greece with his new bride Mosha, Chris was offered a job at Moneghittie Real Estate, whose office was just a stone’s throw away from the Orange Food Bar.

“His office was on the corner of Summer and Peisley Streets, a former service station now Central West Prestige Motors,” says Chris, who would work selling real estate by day and then cook hamburgers at the Orange Food Bar each night.

“I was working with Bob Moneghittie for two years and then Bob sold his business and I applied to get my own licence and I started to run my own business.”

In those early days of Chris Gryllis Real Estate, Chris said he ran the business from a small room in the Orange Food Bar.

“At the back, under the stairs, there was a little room there,” he says. “It wasn’t really an office, it was just good enough to accommodate two people!”

In 1977, Chris and Mosha opened their first “real” office in the Tourist Hotel building on the other side of Summer Street from the Orange Food Bar.

“It was a pretty small pokey little office then,” says Chris, who not long after expanded the office into a neighbouring premises.

Chris Gryllis Real Estate remained at that

location for 40 years, only relocating to the current office three years ago.

“I remember the first month I opened my office, I made a commission of some $32!” recalls Chris.

“But, I didn’t panic, I just continued and we have had some very good years, some notso-good years… I had my knockers, but in the overall scheme of things I think I had more supporters and some very loyal customers. I’ve got customers even now that have been with me since day one.

“I count myself a very lucky and blessed person who has been surrounded by some excellent people over the years. John Stevenson has been with me for 25 years and, of course, my wife Mosha, who has been with me all the way!

“But I’m reaching the end of my business career,” continues Chris. “I’ll be 80 soon. I love doing what I’m doing, but I also realise I can’t keep doing what I’m doing forever. I think the used-by date is getting near, but I plan to remain active with my service club Rotary, committees at Orange City Council and to help wherever I can.”

The changing face of Orange

“I’ve seen a lot of changes during my 50 years,” says Chris Gryllis of his five decades in local real estate.

“Look!” he says, pointing to an old real estate brochure of his from the early 1980s.

“Houses used to sell for as low as $35,000! And duration cottages around Glenroi Avenue used to sell for between $4,000-$5,000!”

Chris says that when he first started his career in real estate in 1974, the ‘done thing’ in Orange was for people to sell up when they retired and move to the coast.

“Now people are coming to Orange to retire,” Chris says, which he attributes to the substantial growth

When I came to Orange to work at NSW Agriculture in 1996 my first priority was to find somewhere to live. Walking up Summer Street Chris Gryllis Real Estate was the first place I saw.

I went inside and inquired about renting something. Chris introduced himself and openly said to me that he had nothing at the time but would be happy to try and find something. However, he also suggested that there were other places that could possibly help.

I was struck by his honesty and have never forgotten those words.

Little did I know at the time that Chris and his wife Mosha would forge an everlasting friendship with me. So much so that they always say to me, “You are family.” Something that I will treasure forever.

I have never met a man who is so kind, honest and generous.

Congratulations Chris and Mosha on your 50-year business anniversary!

Gary Scovell

A huge congratulations to Chris on 50 years in real estate in Orange. Chris has been a cornerstone of the Orange Community through his Agency and commitment to the Orange community.

Congratulations Chris and we hope there are many more happy years to come.

From the entire team at John Davis Motor Group

“To My Brother”

Congratulations Chris on your 50 years in the Real Estate business.

It is only through your dedication, hard work and commitment that you have managed to succeed through these 50 years. ank you for your muchappreciated advice and help on real estate matters over the years.

All the best for the future.

he’s seen in local health services.

“Orange always had good medical services but now we excel! But Orange has always been blessed being the commercial centre and the medical centre of the region.

“Other areas… take the Gold Coast for example, it’s a boom and bust, but we’ve never had that in Orange, slowly and steadily it’s going up. So it’s a good town.”

From the introduction of the now-defunct Bathurst-Orange Development Corporation to the relocation of the Department of Agriculture to Orange, Chris recounts the changes and growth he’s witnessed.

Geoffrey Gale

“I’ve seen the introduction of the agricultural college that became Charles Sturt University. I’ve seen the introduction of grapes and the good quality wines now being made in Orange,” he says.

But nothing, he says, has had a greater impact on the local real estate market than the Covid-19 pandemic. The lockdown periods and closed international borders saw many city dwellers escape to the regions.

And why wouldn’t they want to live in Orange, he says.

“Covid forced the Sydney-siders to get to know Orange and then come to Orange and that has been the biggest boost in Orange real estate values by a long shot.”

Congratulations Chris for 50 years in the real estate business.

From the moment you arrived in Orange in 1962 to commence “life in the lucky country” with our late brother Theo and I, you have shown what years of hard work and dedication are truly about. Cheers to you and more years of success and memories.

Proud of you! Your brother, Michael

Congratulations on 50 years in Real Estate. We value your friendship. Love Martin and Fiona Hallinan and family.

Congratulations to Chris on 50 years in the industry and his hard work, dedication and service.

My company has been leasing commercial properties through Chris for 10 years and we have always found him and his team to be very helpful and prompt with service.

Chris helped us find our new larger properties in 2023 and was extremely helpful in getting the property ready for us to go into.

We worked closely with Chris and his team and contractors to ensure the new property was at its best and suited to our needs.

Chris is always helpful and friendly and has well and truly earned his nickname: “Uncle Chris”.

An amazing achievement from an amazing human. I and Orange Aboriginal Medical Service will be forever grateful to you for your unwavering support and assistance over the years.

God bless,

“Congratulations Chris on reaching such a milestone as 50 years in Business! Your dedication, resilience, and commitment in everything you have achieved is truly inspiring. Here’s to many more years of prosperity and success in the future.

Congratulations on a most remarkable milestone: 50 years in real estate. A milestone that wouldn’t exist without your dedication and commitment that has left an indelible mark, without peer, in the Orange community and beyond.

With humble beginnings as an immigrant from a Greek Island, in a conservative country town with a limited education and an even more limited grasp of the English language. You have defied these challenges with grit and determination to be the distinguished businessman and statesman that you are today.

Many have used their businesses solely for financial motivations, instead, you have used your business with a motivation to build a social legacy to give back to the community. is deep-rooted sense of civic duty and dedication, where you have gone above and beyond to make a positive impact in creating a better society, is extraordinary.

On a personal note, I would like to express my deepest gratitude and admiration for a man who holds a special place in my heart. You have mentored me and guided me in life and in my real estate career. Hopefully one day, I too can achieve the remarkable 50-year milestone you have achieved.

Love, your godson

Eugene

CARO WEBSTER

Oh Sw t Pea!

Lathyrus Odoratus, commonly known as Sweet Pea, is in the family Fabaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region, more specifically Sicily and the Aegean Islands.

Flowering in early spring through to mid/ late summer, it is an annual, climbing or scrambling plant with terminal tendrils which it uses to attach to trellises, other plants or structures – basically whatever it can find to cling to. It can grow to 2 metres in height if happy. If it cannot climb, it will scramble over the ground forming a sprawling mass. It produces the most beautifully (strongly) scented flowers that range in colour from white,

pinks, reds through to deep purples with some varieties almost black in colour. Some varieties are bi-colour.

Whilst they are an annual plant, if left to set seed, the seeds will fall to the ground and may well reappear the following year. Or you can wait until the seed pods develop, harvest them and plant them the following year. The seeds are about the size of a peppercorn so are easy to plant.

Sow them around half a metre apart.

This plant is toxic to humans and pets, so do NOT plant near edible plants such as peas and beans as they look very similar. In fact, I’d keep them well away from your vegetable patch.

They prefer full sun and free-draining

• 3 hours from Sydney CBD, 23*km to Bathurst, 33*km to Orange, 18*km to Blayney & 17*km to Millthorpe.

• Gently rolling country suited to crops, finishing sheep/cattle & hay production in recent months.

• Central location with extensive opportunities, held in the same family for four generations.

• Homestead circa 1950’s set in established gardens, three bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms

• Well-fenced main paddocks, holding paddocks & boundary.

• Woolshed, cattle yards, workshop, windmill, and multiple water tanks.

soil. Keep well mulched and watered as they don’t appreciate dry soil. They will tolerate light frost.

Sweet Peas are commonly used in cottage gardens, in pots (there are dwarf varieties), or trained over trellises. If they are happy in their spot they can naturalise.

Tradition states that you should sow Sweet Pea seeds on St Patrick’s Day (17 March). So, you can plant them now, but I tend to wait a little because of our notorious frosts. I’d pop it onto your to-do list for the end of April. The seeds will take between 10-14 weeks to germinate. Keep them well mulched and do your best to protect them from any latent frost.

In the language of flowers, a posy of Sweet Peas symbolises gratitude and pleasure which makes them a perfect

thank-you gift.

When my daughter was little, she would dissolve into fits of giggles whenever her Dad sang this snappy little song to her.

“Oh sweet pea come on and dance with me Come on, come on, come on and dance with me Oh sweet pea won’t you be my girl Won’t you, won’t you, won’t you be my girl.”

~Tommy Roe, released in 1966.

For those of you who planted cucumbers this year, are you a little sick of them? Mine have been prolific and until last week continued to produce because of the interminably hot weather. Where is autumn, I ask you? Here’s a simple recipe for Greek Tzatziki to use up the last of your cucumbers. If you don’t have them growing, they are readily available in our supermarkets.

Tzatziki Dip

You will need:

● 2-3 Lebanese cucumbers

● 2 cups natural Greek yoghurt

● 1 tsp minced garlic

● Splash of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

● The juice of 1-2 lemons

● Pinch of salt (to taste)

● Pinch of black pepper (to taste)

● Sprig of dill to garnish

Finely dice or grate the cucumber. Squeeze to remove excess fluid. Discard any large seeds.

Fold all the ingredients (except dill) gently together in a bowl. If you have time, pop into the fridge overnight to let the flavours develop. Truth be told, I’ve never been bothered with this.

Taste and adjust if necessary.

Serve with toasted pitta bread or spoon a big dollop over some grilled lamb chops.

Serve with a Greek salad and a cheeky glass of Pinot Gris. Delicious!

Tzatziki will last in the fridge for around 3-4 days.

Until next week.

Flying Fruit Fly Circus present Tempo

APRIL 12

When the orchestra hasn’t shown up and the audience is waiting, call the Flying Fruit Fly Circus!

A highly distinguished musician has arrived to conduct their latest symphony, but the orchestra is nowhere to be found. Fortunately, the Fruities are ready to save the day! And create chaos with the concert grand piano…

Directed by Jake Silvestro with an original score by Ania Reynolds, Tempo features an extraordinary ensemble of young performers aged between 12 and 18 who not only possess dazzling circus skills, but also play instruments!

Shifting between striking aerial acts and highly choreographed acrobatic chaos, Tempo draws heavily on the traditional knockabout humour of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus – a trademark of the company over many years. Magic, slapstick, juggling, balancing, acrobatics, and aerials tumble in, out and around the concert grand piano.

With no dialogue and plenty of gasp-inducing action, Tempo appeals to every age and is suitable, or perhaps essential, for all families.

See Tempo at Orange Civic Theatre on Friday, April 12, 7.30pm. Tickets at Ticketek or call 6393 8111.

It’s true though! You are a great big fleshy lump with a remarkable hole running all the way through your middle - your digestive system.

That’s at least how the creators of the family show “You are a doughnut” describe it.

Some would say it’s educational!

Along the way you’ll encounter a frenzy of enzyme-powered ping pong balls, sing along with a rainbow collection of poop puppets, and witness the weirdest poetry performance you’ve ever seen.

It’s a little bit gross — and a ‘hole’ lotta fun! You might even learn something!

Easter is a special time of the year. I get to celebrate my favourite holiday in my favourite season, and I get to celebrate it with the people I love. But what is it about Easter that makes it so special? Any public holiday is worth celebrating, and the fact we get a Friday and a Monday is just brilliant. The possibilities for adventures, rest, and family fun are endless when we have this sort of break available to us. I don’t know about you, but I am feeling a bit strange with Easter falling during the school term and not in the holidays like normal. I’m finding it weird that it is in March this year, but I’m certainly not complaining. I don’t know how I’ll feel next year when Easter falls at the very end of April: we will cross that bridge when we get to it. But why do we celebrate Easter? Is it just a cultural hangover that doesn’t really have any significance in our modern Australian, multicultural context? I suspect for many, the meaning of Easter is either forgotten or ignored, but the fact we get a couple of public holidays is great. Perhaps it’s a bit like Christmas where the real message is hidden behind sentiments of family and holidays. But the heart of Easter is something incredible. Certainly more than just a few days o . Easter is about rescue, reconciliation, and love. It is because of this that for me, as

a Christian, Easter is so special. For at the heart of the Easter message is the death of Jesus, an innocent man who was executed by religious fanatics at the hands of an oppressive empire all because he claimed to be the son of God and spoke a message of ‘love your neighbour’. But it was what happened in his death that makes Easter so special. For as an innocent man, he died to pay an unpayable debt to the God of the universe, for all the hate, hurt and selfishness that has plagued humanity since the beginning. And he died willingly so that we could be reconciled back to God. It is a staggering act of love displayed through sacrifice. Then on Easter Sunday – after being declared dead and buried in a tomb – he walked out fully alive, announcing life and forgiveness and rescue for anyone who trusts in him to be their saviour. It’s why we celebrate Easter. It’s why there is a cross on hot cross buns, to remind us of Jesus’s death. It’s why easter eggs are a thing… hollow to symbolise the empty tomb of Jesus and an egg symbolising new life. It is why I love Easter because it is about someone who saved me. And if you ever want to know more about Easter and what makes it special, why not make a visit to a church part of your Easter celebrations. Come and see what it is all about. You might be pleasantly surprised

Fun at the Bletchington Bash!

The Bletchington Public School fete — the Bletchington Bash — was an incredible success, thanks to the remarkable support and involvement of a vibrant community.

The fete on the evening of Friday, March 22, was a true collaboration between Bletchington Public School’s P&C, sta and families, who contributed their time, resources, and enthusiasm to make this such a memorable community event.

Those who went along had a fantastic time enjoying all the fun activities, rides, games, and stalls that were on o er. From the spooky thrills of the Haunted House to the exhilarating giant slide, from the creative delights of face painting to the excitement of Angry Bird Alley, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The atmosphere was buzzing with laughter and joy as families came together to enjoy and support our school community. All funds raised from this year’s Bletchington Bash will go towards providing resources for students.

THE robus NOTES with Keith Rawsthorne

Another good monthly meeting with a good crowd of members and a most interesting guest speaker.

It was good to welcome Brian Coyne back to the committee following his bout of ill health. Thanks to Brian who does a great job finding appropriate guest speakers.

Sadly, we farewell Ted Connors due to his failing health, and to Noel ‘Elbows’ Elbourne who has moved to the seaside.

John Read and Keith Rawsthorne will represent us at Orange Ladies Probus Changeover on March 27. The new Constitution is in place and we are all legal and insured. No problems.

Don’t be confused by the change of dates for our April meeting: Services Club has been able to now accommodate us on the usual date WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3 at 10am in “our” room.

AGM: President Chuck reported a very successful year with highlights being the combined Probus Dinner, the Christmas dinner and tours to RFDS in Dubbo and the Zig Zag railway, and interesting guest speakers and lots of Probus FUN and FRIENDSHIP.

All positions were filled with David Cuming stepping up to the president’s role and Marcel Boersma will join the committee Finance is in good form though we ended the year with a loss of $600. This was a planned loss as the club paid the $700 entrance fee to the Royal Flying Doctor Service for the tourists. The auditor’s certificate was presented verifying our true and accurate position.

Our bank will no longer accept cheques but, fear not, our trusty leaders have EFTPOS ready and

Director, Brian Coyne, and guest speaker Roxane Sciberras.

working, so you can tap-and-go. While on that matter, annual dues of $55 are now due.

Guest Speaker Roxanne Sciberras, general manager of Gosling Creek Aged Care, has a background in nursing, including remote and critical care. She has a Master’s Degree in nursing and worked four years at Moyne (Canowindra) before coming to Gosling Creek.

She likes activities for the residents and gets grants to fund these, and is careful about Duty of Care. Residents should be over 65, make it their home, and are free to come and go.

They have a Registered Nurse for every 30 patients and a carer to every seven patients; all food is prepared fresh on site. There are levels of care from independent to totally dependent.

X H E N E ST I T Using the nine letters in the grid, how many words of four letters or more can you list? The centre letter must be included and each letter may only be used once. No colloquial or foreign words. No capitalised nouns, apostrophes or plural words ending in “s”. Each number corresponds to a letter of the alphabet. Two have been filled in for you, can you work out the rest? Can you find all the words listed? The leftover letters will spell out a secret message. To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every number from 1 to 9 must appear in: each of the nine vertical columns, each of the nine horizontal rows and each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes. THUMBS

THUMBS UP to the organisers and the people who manned the stands at the Orange Easter Family Festival in Robertson Park on Sunday. It was an outstanding success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

THUMBS DOWN to the tradesmen who (after three calls) say they are coming and don’t turn up or bother to call. Do you think we have nothing better to do than sit around all day waiting for you to call or visit? Not good for business!

THUMBS UP To Danni and Pip for their professional presentation of the weather report on the local channel 7 news.

THUMBS DOWN to businesses that do not advertise the prices of cakes, slices and sandwiches and if you request the price you are met with disdain. Not everyone has “loose change”.

THUMBS DOWN to users of our new language. All monetary amounts are prefixed with “only” whatever the amount. A subjective interpretation.

THUMBS UP to the Manildra Bowling Club and the small community of Manildra for raising over $30,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. Such a mighty effort and a great cause. Well done.

THUMBS UP to Mrs Mac from Spring Hill Public School. The students, parents and community are so lucky to have such a passionate and dedicated educator.

THUMBS UP and a sincere thank you from all our family to the team in the Palliative Care at Orange Hospital and the hospital staff. We were so grateful for your care, compassion and warm consideration during the two weeks my aunt (and my cousin’s mum) spent in endof-life care with you. We know you work long hours and have so much to do. We just want you to know what a huge difference it made. The parking arrangements also took a big load off our minds during our family’s comings and goings to keep her company. Thank you and God bless.

THUMBS UP to Orange City Council and contractors for the new road works, bitumen and road markings along Beasley Road. It has made the travel much safer and less arduous and makes all the difference to visitors. Huntley Road is coming along too. Thank you.

THUMBS UP and a big thank you to those people who helped me on Monday, March 18. A special thanks to the two gentlemen at East Orange Post Office, to Matt and Tim the Paramedics, to Georgia and Nicole at Emergency and to Doctors Samantha and Ryan. Their help is very much appreciated.

THUMBS DOWN to Orange Council for ignoring Seniors during Seniors Week. Bathurst had two weeks and a booklet of 90 events, starting with a dinner with Normie Rowe. What did we have? ...nothing. The Information Centre knew nothing, The Seniors Hub had the same things that they have every other week. The local paper only had news about the Rainbow Festival. Shame on Orange Council - even they will get old someday.

THUMBS UP to Tony, Dot, the chef and staff at Lucknow Tavern. Great meals, friendly staff and service. Once again, amazing food and service at our recent visit on St Patrick’s Day!

THUMBS DOWN to the independent Federal Member for Calare who does not have the courtesy to acknowledge let alone respond to correspondence that took considerable time to compose and deliver to his office.

THUMBS UP to Coco and Charlie at Harris Farm for their help finding the bean spouts. They were so friendly and efficient.

THUMBS UP to all the organisers and volunteers of the Orange Running Festival. An amazing weekend. So much fun had by all!

THUMBS DOWN to the pathetic person who “keyed” my new red Suzuki for no reason. I won’t take it personally and I hope it makes you feel better.

THUMBS UP to Bob at North Orange Woolies who is consistently great behind the checkout. He has great customer skills, took care of some cracked eggs, and packs brilliantly.

THUMBS UP to Helen Mcanulty for her History Talking column. Always interesting, but I particularly enjoyed this week’s about letters. Unfortunately, letter writing is becoming a lost art, as everyone sends emails these days, but it does not compare to receiving a letter in the mail, always special.

THUMBS DOWN to the person complaining about the backyard fire pit! Not sure how old you are? People sit around talking! Back in the day everyone had a backyard incinerator, mulching pit and a vegetable garden! How it still should be.

THUMBS DOWN to the extremely rude woman in the Telstra store. The way you spoke to the staff was revolting! They were treating you with respect and patience, have the decency to do the same with them.

THUMBS UP to the wonderful young man who helped me in Woolies car park by pushing my trolley to my car. A friendly helpful man, thank you.

THUMBS UP to Ryan at Bunnings. He’s very helpful and very knowledgeable about all products even in the tool shop! It’s nice to shop in Bunnings and see his friendly smile, also goes out of his way to help you get products from a high shelf and even took them to the counter for me, as I had my arms full with other items really. Appreciate the helpful and amazing services.

THUMBS UP and thank you so much to the kind shoppers at Aldi Orange on St Patrick’s Day. Because of your generosity, my busking session raised $35.35 for Doctors Without Borders. Well done to all, especially Lindy.

THUMBS UP to the Chef at Lucknow Tavern on Friday night. Great meals and very friendly staff. Well worth the drive and I certainly will be going back.

THUMBS UP to Nathan Howarth who recently fitted double-glazed windows in our home. Nathan was on time with everything, and did a great job. He took all the old windows away for us and even put the curtains back. Thanks Nathan and Adam!

EASTER BUN BONANZA

Who can resist a hot cross bun at East-time?

Ensuring Orange residents were supplied with the tasty buns as Easter approached in April 1963 were Onley’s Bakery employees Colin O ner and Doug Hillier. They produced thousands of buns for eager customers, as did other major Orange bakers such as Smeaton and Campbell.
