A WALK ALONG

yng Street was once the main thoroughfare through Orange, with shops, a flour mill, hotels and other notable buildings. Two churches – St Joseph’s Catholic and Holy Trinity Anglican, Orange Court House stands on the corner of Byng Street and Lords Place, and
the former Town Hall is located on the corner of Byng Street and Anson Street—all wonderful reminders of our rich past. In the late 19th century, wealthy Orange entrepreneur James Dalton Junior had a home built for himself at number 72, plus two for some of his children – numbers 60 (Galbally)
and 66 (Emly) – built in Byng Street. Orange & District Historical Society’s March meeting will be a walk along Byng Street between the Gladstone and Carrington hotels – from Hill Street to Lords Place. It will take place on Sunday 19 March from 2 to 4pm. Conducting the walk will be
Ross Maroney and Phil Stevenson, both of whom have a bank of knowledge about Orange’s history and notable landmarks. They will take participants through the street’s fascinating history, telling the stories of the streetscape, notable buildings and the people associated with them.
