Building your life on solid ground On September 4 last year, an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook Christchurch in New Zealand. It caused extensive damage and a handful of injuries, but no deaths. In the months that followed aftershocks of up to 5.1 regularly shook the city. On February 22 this year the ground shook again with another aftershock measuring 6.3. This time, the devastation was horrifying—172 dead and still counting, more than 200 major injuries, buildings, roads, water, power, sewerage, communications in a mess. Why the difference? This aftershock compressed the soil. Under the intense pressure and shaking, soil moisture was forced to the surface, transforming what seemed like solid ground into sloppy mud. You may have seen the images of damaged and tilted buildings caused by sinking foundations. When life’s stresses and pressures have us feeling shaky we look for something that’s secure and stable, a place of safety and comfort. Jesus Christ said, “Anyone who hears and obeys these teachings of mine is like a wise person who built a house on solid rock. Rain poured down, rivers flooded, and winds beat against that house. But it did not fall, because it was built on solid rock.” Are you building your life on this solid rock, or something else you hope won’t turn to quicksand one day?

And that’s just what we received late last week when residents woke to find a fine blanket of soft snow covering the district! The snow was thicker on higher grounds, which enabled some dedicated snow lovers to build snow men! Photo News found Natalie and Tully Philpott playing in the snow at Pinnacle.
