Consumers are left to do their own evaluations

Consumers typically have to do their own research on oil properties, application methods, dilution and a host of methods to make aromatherapy convenient and effective for regular use.

Here’s the most troublesome problem when it comes to your health and safety in an industry with little oversight and product procurement happening continents away: Not all products promoted as essential oils are created equal. So buyer beware.

Testing for quality and purity

A noted independent laboratory recently tested the chemical breakdown of five widely sold essential oil brands currently marketed as “100% Lavender Essential Oil�. Frightingly, only one was pure lavender. Yes, only one of the five. Another, purchased from a worldwide retailer, actually contained harsh cleaning solvents, including a potential carcinogen. The others were either pure lavandin or dilutions of lavandin, a different and cheaper essential oil that comes from a different plant species (Lavandula Intermedia instead of Lavandula Angustifolia) and does not have the same medicinal purposes.

These hydrosols may provide a pleasant scent, but should not be expected to offer the same potency or effectiveness as pure essential oils.

So how do you know what you’re getting?

Before you buy and use any essential oils, look for the product’s ingredients and read all fine print. If the same quantity of a “so-called” essential oil is priced far lower than all other brands, beware and ask questions.

Here’s just one example: The label “therapeutic grade” implies a higher quality of oil, but the term is not earned through any regulatory agency or third-party standard that is met. First, check labels closely. “Fragrance oils, manufactured compounds” and perfumes are not the same as essential oils. Even if a bottle says it contains pure essential oils, it may still contain other components, as the study, previously mentioned demonstrated.

Q: Your clinical study compared the effectiveness of your essential oil blend for helping with postoperative nausea against three other groups of patients: a placebo group, a group that inhaled alcohol and one that inhaled ginger essential oil alone. Can you tell us what surprised you most about the results?
