Experiencing traditional fish fry-catching techniques.
The warmth of industrious, humble locals and scenic farmlands are define Huxi's charm. Four of Penghu's eight most renowned scenic spots are found here, including the spectacular "Moses Parting the Sea" at the foot of Kuibishan – a natural gravel pathway that emerges at low tide to link Huxi to a tiny islet. It is a must-visit attraction in Penghu.In Chenggong Community, elders pass down traditional fish fry-catching techniques, creating eye-opening travel experiences and preserving local wisdom. The community strives to become a model for sustainable, ocean-friendly living.
Heading further east, Guoye Kiln ( 菓葉灰窯 ) is at its most stunning in the early morning. Locals say that no two sunrises here are ever the same – sometimes heralded by multi-colored clouds, other times shrouded in mist. This natural spectacle, a counterpart to Xiyu's famed sunsets, is one of Penghu's eight most celebrated views. Guoye Kiln itself is a well-preserved lime kiln, resembling a medieval European castle from a distance. It's a popular photo backdrop for locals and visitors alike, with a haunting facade that evokes images of Penghu's once-thriving lime kiln industry.
At Longmen Community, Huxi's easternmost village, a group of elderly residents known as the "Millennium Team" took it upon themselves to clear marine debris, transforming Longmen into a coastal sanctuary. History buffs will be thrilled to explore the narrow underground tunnels of Longmen's fortifications, offering a real-life glimpse into military history.
True to its name, Baisha Township, meaning “white sand,” is famous for its pristine beaches that stretch endlessly along the coast. Tongliang Great Banyan, which has stood for more than 350 years, has nearly a hundred aerial roots extending outward in all directions, creating a truly aweinspiring sight.
Baisha Township is also dotted with charming offshore islets. Yuanbei Islet ( 員貝嶼 ) is home to Taiwan's first island revitalization camping site, where visitors can fall asleep to the soothing sound of waves and experience the restorative beauty of island life. At sunset, head to the Xikan Mountain ( 西崁山 ) viewing platform on Jibei Island for a breathtaking view – the red-tinged sky mirrored in the ancient stone tidal weirs just offshore, a centuries-old fishing technique ingeniously designed to trap fish.

A major highlight of Penghu's Lantern Festival is best viewed from the heights of Sanxian Pagoda ( 三仙塔 ): a stunning spectacle where nearly a hundred fishing boats light up the sea, symbolizing guidance and prosperity. Another must-see is the Daguoye Columnar Basalt rock formation. After heavy rainfall, puddles reflect an image of the towering rock columns set against the blue sky.
For a taste of Xiyu's cultural heritage, visit Erkan Village, home to the Chen Family Historic House, a well-preserved example of traditional architecture. If you're lucky, you might hear an elder singing pokua, traditional folk songs that recount Penghu's agricultural and fishing traditions, as well as its seasonal festivals.

Hop aboard a boat and set sail southward. The seas off Wangan Township provide a habitat for the endangered green sea turtle. Wangan's remote islets, untouched by time, add to its allure. Like scattered pearls on the sea, Dongji Island, Xiji Islet ( 西吉嶼 ), Dongyuping Islet ( 東 嶼坪嶼 ), Xiyuping Islet ( 西嶼坪嶼 ), and the surrounding reefs comprise the South Penghu Marine National Park.
Of the four islets, Dongji Island is the largest. Its intricately adorned, now-deserted Western-style mansions are remnants of an era when residents prospered from deepsea fishing. Meanwhile, Dongyuping Islet's terraced fields, nestled along the hillside, transform with the seasons lush and green in spring and summer, yet stark and hauntingly beautiful in autumn and winter, mirroring the tranquil solitude of neighboring Xiyuping Islet.
Cimei Township is abundant in marine resources, with a thriving aquaculture industry particularly for abalone. No visit is complete without sampling the delicacy and enjoying the ultimate in sea-to-table freshness. For many, Cimei is synonymous with the Twin Hearts Stone Weir. Instantly identifiable due to the aptness of its name, this structure was built in the ocean shallows long ago for trapping fish and is unsurprisingly touted as a symbol of romance. Beyond its famed weir, Cimei is also home to striking rock formations. A journey around the island feels like stepping into a living geology classroom, where nature's artistry is on full display.

Penghu's settlers developed unique survival strategies to adapt to their challenging environment. One such innovation is the caizhai crop enclosures ( 菜宅 , "vegetable house"), a stone-walled garden designed to shield crops from the relentless monsoon winds. Similarly, traditional fishing methods were designed to work in harmony with nature, allowing the tides and weather to determine the size of each catch. These centuries-old practices reflect a deep reverence for nature and the preciousness of natural resources.

Penghu's abundance of temples reveals how living on remote islands was difficult in the past, when communities relied heavily on divine protection and guidance. Each village has its own temple, serving as a spiritual anchor for its residents. Some, like the Hepo Gong Temple ( 闔澎公廟 ), attract worshippers from across Penghu, creating atmospheric scenes of numerous fragrant incense sticks alight. These temples are not just places of worship they also play a role in community decisions, such as allocating fishing areas and managing seaweed harvesting rights.
Penghu Tianhou Temple, Penghu Guanyin Temple, and Magong Chenghuang Temple are the three most representative temples in Penghu and most highly recommended for visitors. Penghu Tianhou Temple houses the oldest known stone tablet ever found in Taiwan. Engraved with a ruler's edict ordering the expulsion of Dutch traders who landed in Penghu, it commemorates a significant chapter in Taiwan's early history. Located by the beach, Penghu Guanyin Temple is an ideal viewing spot for the summer fireworks festival, while the nearby Magong Chenghuang Temple is the starting point for Penghu's annual Taoist pilgrimage during the seventh month of the lunar calendar.
Around the villages, various structures stand as protective talismans against evil spirits and misfortune. For example, Magong City has northern and southern stone towers ( 鎖港南北 塔 ), the largest such towers in Penghu, built to safeguard the harbor and serve as sites of prayer. Jinlong Pagoda ( 金龍塔 ) and Chifu Pagoda ( 池府塔 ) on Dongyuping Islet ( 東嶼坪嶼 ) guard the eastern and western shores. Villagers believe these towers protect their wealth and bring prosperity to the entire community

Winter cabbage grows large with a naturally sweet taste.
In autumn and winter, strong northeasterly winds bring sea mists, often enveloping Penghu in swirling fogs. To shield crops from these winds, the islanders developed the unique caizhai crop enclosures sturdy stone-walled gardens built using locally sourced coral stone and basalt.
To withstand the harshest winds, the north wall of a caizhai was the tallest, up to two meters. In some areas, reeds are woven together into windbreaks, further enhancing the protection that the caizhai affords to the fruit and vegetables growing within.

QIANGU BEACH SEINE FISHING

Qiangu beach seine fishing ( 牽罟 ) is an ancient Taiwanese fishing method practiced in Penghu. It requires a seabed that is flat, free of coral, and gentle tide. Such locations are found off Shili Beach and Lintou Park on the main island, Chima Beach and Xiaochijiao Village ( 小池角村 ) on Xiyu Island, and Longmen Beach in Huxi Township. Once the seine settles on the seabed, people on the shore work together to pull in the net hauling in fish and shrimp. An old saying, "The sight of a fish at the net's corner means food for a mother and child within." captures the scene of a bountiful catch that could feed an entire village.
Today, qiangu fishing is rarely used commercially, but it has become a popular hands-on experience for tourists. It's not as easy as it looks, and some liken the process of hauling in the qiangu with its fish to one step forward, two steps back.
At the captain's command, everyone joins forces to pull in the qiangu. Anyone present can take part, even children, and all get a share of the catch. A unique tradition awards pregnant women a double share one for themselves and one for their unborn child. Qiangu fishing represents more than just a way to catch fish; it symbolizes equality, teamwork, and respect for women's roles in the community.
Penghu is also home to baodun, another traditional tidal fishing technique. These stone mounds have hollow interiors with small openings, allowing fish to swim inside during high tide. When the tide recedes, fishermen remove the stones, trapping the fish inside to be easily caught with nets.
As the tide recedes, intricately shaped stone weirs emerge across Penghu's shores. Nearly 700 of these ancient fish traps are scattered throughout the islands. Once an important fishing tool, the stone weirs have gradually fallen into disuse with modern fishing advancements.
To preserve and showcase Penghu's stone weirs, isle. travel launched the Stoneweir.info website, using GPS and aerial photography to update historical records. After restoring the first stone weir near Tanbian Village ( 潭邊村 ) in Huxi Township in 2017, more people learned about young people in Penghu working on such projects.
Since then, isle.travel has trained young artisans and organized events that enable participants to experience stone weir restoration and tidal fishing firsthand. It also arranges tours that offer opportunities to learn how people can harmoniously coexist with the sea. isle.travel's committed to bring Penghu's stone weirs to the international travel stage.

When refrigerators were still a luxury in the 1960s and 1970s, large catches of fish were transported to Penghu's yuzao ( 魚灶 , "fish stoves") for processing. The yuzao not only represented the prosperity of local fisheries but also provided jobs for the entire community. A single fishing harbor might have had as many as three or four yuzao, serving as a sign of a prosperous fishing village at the time.
At the yuzao, fish were steamed, boiled, and dried a process that required many hands, providing work for nearly everyone in the village. Not only did the preserved fish provide a product with an extended shelf life, but the brine left over as a by-product was collected in jars for storage as "fish sauce".
With Penghu's growing tourism industry, several historic yuzao have been restored, reviving memories of an era when fish smoking thrived. Prime examples include Fuji Yuzao ( 福記魚灶 ) in Nanliao Community, as well as Zeng Family Yuzao ( 曾家魚灶 ) and Yan Family Yuzao ( 顏府 魚灶 ) in Wangan Township's Zhongshe Village, Hongluo Yuzao ( 紅羅魚灶 ) in Huxi Township, Houliao Community's Sanba'an Yuzao ( 三八垵魚灶 ), and Magong City's Jingan Fish-Drying Ground ( 井垵曬魚場 ).

Sometimes, a single street tells the story of an entire town and Magong Zhongyang Old Street is a perfect example. The first thoroughfare built in Penghu, the street is lined with renovated buildings in the Southern Min architectural style, filled with nostalgic charm and inviting exploration.
As you wander through Magong Zhongyang Old Street, you'll come across the Four-eyed Well at the northern end, aptly named for its distinctive design. The nearby Qianyitang Chinese Medicine Pharmacy ( 乾益堂中藥行 ) has been a family-run business for four generations, selling not only medicinal herbs but also stewed herbal eggs and dried tofu, their rich aromas enticing passersby. The building itself is designated as a historic site by the Penghu County government, serving as an important landmark that tells a tale stretching back in time.
Magong Zhongyang Old Street is also the perfect place to shop for traditional Penghu specialties, such as brown sugar cake and scallop-infused sauces. For a unique keepsake, visit a stone engraving workshop to create a personalized stamp made from local stone. You can also explore specialty shops for creative articles that tell their own story in the designer's voice, giving you insight into Penghu beyond what you'll find in travel guides.

Strolling from Penghu Tianhou Temple towards Zhongshan Road, you'll find the Honggenshen Art Museum ( 洪根深美術館 ), home to a stunning collection of ink paintings. On a street corner not far away sits the former Penghu Post Office, which has been renovated and renamed the Penghu Underwater Cultural Assets Exhibition Building. Duxingshi Village showcases well preserved examples of old houses typical of a military dependents' village.
Drive far enough along the coastal Jieshou Road, and you'll eventually spot a large rock engraved with the Chinese phrase " 毋忘在莒 " ("never forget the past"). It marks the entrance to Taiwan's oldest military dependents' village, Duxingshi Village. Constructed over a period spanning both the Japanese colonial and Nationalist government eras, the village features a blend of Japanese-style wooden structures and brick-and-mud houses.
Ambling through the revitalized neighborhood where local cultural industries are centered, your attention may be drawn to the elegantly printed Chinese characters " 沿菊書店 " on a sign at the gate of a quaint old home. You've arrived at Yanju Bookstore. This is far more than a bookstore. The owner took over the restored historical building and turned it into a cultural hub working with local artists, cultural workers, and small farmers. On the other side of Huxi Township, the residents of Nanliao Community have joined forces to breathe new life into their neighborhood in recent years. The colorfully painted buoys arrayed on a trellis attract many tourists. Their ecoconscious efforts have earned Nanliao a spot in the Top 100 Green Destinations list for two consecutive years.
In Longmen Community, a place renowned for its strong volunteer spirit, discarded marine debris has been transformed into art. The founder and members of O2 Lab ( 海漂實驗室 ) have creatively turn into these items into artworks like block prints and decorative lighting fixtures. Their hands-on workshops not only teach visitors the art of upcycling but also inspire them to reflect on the relationship between the ocean, land, and sustainable living.

Known as “rice fragrance candy” ( 米香糖仔 ), these puffed rice balls were a traditional wedding gift in Wangan.
In the early Qing dynasty, Penghu's islands were largely undeveloped, and the islands that make up today's Wangan Township were among the few that had been settled. Zhongshe Village ( 中社村 ), known historically as "Huazhai" ( 花宅 , "flower home"), is one of the few Han settlements in Taiwan where traditional Southern Minstyle architecture has been preserved intact. Early settlers discovered that the small hills surrounding a central valley resembled encircling petals of a flower. They built homes near the heart of this "flower" and the area came to be called "flower home" due to its distinctive terrain.
Passing through the narrow lanes, you'll find the Zeng Family Historic House ( 曾家古厝 ), the village's most striking landmark. Its intricate decorative details and unique window lattice designs are a testament to traditional craftsmanship. The Zeng family's descendants have carefully maintained the old house for many years, inviting artisans to restore the adjoining yuzao (traditional stone stove)and holding occasional hands-on cooking events, where the practices of past eras are vividly recreated.
Since 2019, under the name Daobien, a group of Penghu women have been reviving Wangan's traditional craft of straw sandal weaving, preserving a skill that reflects the ingenuity of Penghu's early settlers.

At Magong Third Fishing Port ( 馬 公第三漁港 ), the morning hustle and bustle signals the arrival of the day's freshest catch. The selection of plump seasonal fish tells the time of year mackerel in winter, euthynnus affinis in spring, and grouper and red snapper in summer. Beichen Market feels like a living seafood museum, where the salty aroma of dried fish fills the air, evoking the scent of the ocean. It's a must-visit for travelers looking to buy dried goods. the market, shops serve up dishes like fish ball soup and omelets made with seaweed, testimony to how Penghu residents have taken to heart the saying "Live by the sea, eat from the sea".
Seafood bought at the Beichen Market can be brought directly to the shops around for immediate cooking, achieving the shortest distance from sea to table and enabling a dining experience worthy of connoisseurs. At a market stall offering steamed buns, a sauce made from dried fish and scallop is generously spread on halved steamed buns, for a rich and
savory snack bursting with ocean flavors. The popular zhaguo ( 炸粿 , "fried rice pudding") features crispy cabbage and crunchy shrimp shells, a delicacy hard to resist even in the heat of summer.
Swept by salty sea breezes, Penghu's farmlands produce unique crops. Edible plants native to Penghu include sponge gourd, fengru herb ( 風茹草 ), jiabao watermelon ( 嘉寶 瓜 ), and the iceplant ( 冰花 ) – a rare find on Taiwan's main island. To explore the agricultural potential of the land, young people returning to Penghu are using natural farming methods to grow native vegetables and fruits, as well as crops such as arugula, herbs, and strawberries that have proven a good fit for Penghu's land and climate, adding even more variety to the local cuisine. Traditional preservation techniques, such as sun-drying, wind-drying, and pickling, not only extend shelf life but also deepen flavors over time. Local versions of pickled cabbage are mildly sour
with a sweet finish, while Wangan's pickled melon is perfect for steamed fish or oyster stews, creating unique flavors for Penghu's dining tables.
Through revitalization efforts, Penghu has reclaimed its traditional local flavors and reinforced the continuity of the island's cultural life, attracting the return of natives and bringing in new immigrants. The result is a future for Penghu as rich as its past.

On the Jade Emperor's birthday, offer xiannai ( 仙奶 ). During Lantern Festival, visit temples for the turtle-begging tradition. Celebrate weddings with zhazao ( 炸棗 ), a symbol of happiness.
Each festival throughout the year is marked by special foods, forming a flavorful language that connects generations. On the ninth day of the first lunar month, Penghu residents celebrate the birthday of the Jade Emperor ( 天公 ) with offerings of tiangongyuan ( 天公圓 ), also known as xiannai ( 仙奶 ), special steamed cakes made from glutinous rice flour. During Lantern Festival, Penghu temples light up with festive decorations, and pavilions display turtle-shaped offerings. Numerous turtle effigies made of such things as rice, fruit jelly, or brown sugar cake beckon Penghu locals to see the turtles .
After the Spring Equinox, stuffed big clams ( 大蛤包飯 ) become a signature Qingming Festival dish in Penghu. Clams are pried open, filled with rice, tied with twine, and steamed. The shells left after eating the clams are then used to weigh down paper laid on family tombs as an offering to convey the
auspicious message "change for better fortune by shedding a shell". During the Dongzhi Festival (Winter Solstice), families prepare rice cakes shaped like hens and puppies, symbolizing livestock offerings. This unique food was created as an alternative to offering pork, chicken, and fish during difficult times when such meat was in short supply. Sweet-and-savory vegetable dumplings ( 菜繭 ) that resemble wontons wonton but are made with glutinous rice are another indispensable food for the Dongzhi Festival.
In Penghu wedding celebrations, zhazao ( 炸棗 , fried rice cakes) are a must-have treat and usually distributed by the groom to friends and family, earning them the nickname "men's wedding cake." The older generations in Penghu still often insist, "Eat zhazao, and every year will be a good year."

Uni Air, Mandarin Airlines, and Daily Air offer direct flights from Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Chiayi, and Kaohsiung to Penghu Airport. Currently, only Daily Air offers direct flights from Kaohsiung to Cimei and Wangan.
