ABOUT CVLS For 55 years CVLS has been the first and pre-eminent pro bono civil legal aid provider in Chicago. Thanks to over 2,500 volunteer attorneys CVLS provides the most comprehensive, efficient and cost-effective civil legal aid in the city.
MISSION CVLS’ mission is to coordinate, support and promote the voluntary pro bono legal representation of the Chicago area’s poor and working poor.

WHERE THERE’S A NEED CVLS began in church basements with a handful of young attorney volunteers. Today some of CVLS’ 2,400 pro bono attorneys still meet their clients in church basements. CVLS has always been about community lawyering—a popular concept these days. Back in 1964 our founders knew that many low-income people couldn’t get to the Loop for legal help. Instead they turned to their churches and neighborhood organizations. So that’s where CVLS went. We still go where our clients need us, representing veterans, children, people with disabilities, immigrants and anyone who is poor and will benefit from our services. Our pro bono attorneys provide free legal services in churches, community service organizations and in the courts. Walk into the Daley Center courtrooms that primarily serve poor people and CVLS is there. Our pro bono attorneys are on the front lines all over the Chicago area because equal access to justice is their fight. Equal access to justice is everyone’s fight. CVLS provides free legal services to more than 3,000 people every year. CVLS is Chicago Pro Bono.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS The buzzword of the day for legal services is “communities”, as in, putting lawyers who provide legal services into people’s communities. However, this concept isn’t new for us. CVLS has been delivering free legal services in Chicago’s low-income communities since its founding in 1964.
CVLS staff celebrates 40 years of services with Schiff Hardin current and past clinic chairs and volunteers
Schiff Hardin celebrated the 40th anniversary of the firm’s adoption of CVLS’ east Rogers Park clinic. Other large law firms eventually followed Schiff’s example by adopting their own community clinics. This model of services has allowed thousands of Chicago residents to receive quality legal representation they would have otherwise been denied. Amicus Poloniae kicked off the 30th year of the founding of this clinic for and by Chicago’s large and vibrant Polish community. Similarly, CVLS now has other clinics served by ethnic bar associations providing pro bono legal services to their fellow countrymen in their own immigrant communities. A YEAR OF GROWTH Erie Neighborhood House and CVLS joined forces to run a family law clinic at Erie Neighborhood Houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Little Village Office. An attorney, fluent in oral and written Spanish and English, interviews and advises clinic clients with family law cases on site once a week. CVLS also provides periodic Guardianship for Immigrant Families / Safety Planning presentations and document preparation.
CVLS has agreed to establish and support a 4th District Family Law Self-Represented Litigants (SRL) Legal Clinic in the Maywood Courthouse two days per month. There CVLS staff attorneys give legal advice to SRL in family law cases.
The Deceased Borrower Hot-line is available for Chancery and Probate Judges to refer appropriate parties to CVLS for possible representation. Heirs call the number, leave their relevant information, and get a call back from CVLS about their situation. The program is working, allowing more heirs who are eligible to save their family home get pro bono representation in their Probate and Chancery cases. 9
CVLS also formalized our partnership with the Mexican Consulate to provide legal services to low-income and indigent Mexican nationals in family, consumer and housing cases.

Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. 35
Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation as of June 30, 2019 and 2018, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.
