THIS WEEK

Hello, Charlottesville! Thank you for reading C-VILLE Weekly. After former Charlottesville city councilor Sena Magill resigned in January, there was a mad dash for her vacant seat. Nineteen candidates applied, and City Council unanimously selected Leah Puryear to fill the role. Puryear is a former Charlottesville School Board member, and directed the Upward Bound program at the University of Virginia (now known as Uplift @ UVA) for nearly 40 years. For this week’s feature (p. 20), Brielle Entzminger has written a profile of our newest councilor, so the community can get to know her better.

4.12.23

Entzminger talked to Puryear about her career, her predecessor, and her priorities while in office. Puryear says she’s focused on education, workforce development, and health and wellness for Charlottesville’s citizens. She also spoke on other hot-button issues like the city’s spike in gun violence and mental health crisis management. In addition, Puryear told C-VILLE she does not plan to run for re-election when her term is up at the end of the year.

T here are a lot of wonderful and fascinating individuals in Charlottesville, and we try to highlight their vibrant personalities in the pages of this paper. One section that often features stories about our city’s most interesting people is “P.S.,” on our back page. I encourage you to check out the rotating pieces we run there, from the HotSeat Q&A to the upbeat news in You’ll Be Happy To Hear.—Richard DiCicco

IN BRIEF

Shots fired

On April 4, the Charlottesville Police Department responded to a shots fired report near Tonsler Park on Cherry Avenue at around 7:51pm. There were no injuries, but one residence was struck. Anyone with information regarding the shooting should contact Crime Stoppers at 977-4000.

Break in

The CPD received a report on April 7 of a man breaking into the University of Virginia Kappa Delta sorority house on Chancellor Street, and assaulting several residents at around 4:12am. Police intercepted the suspect, 18-year-old Harry Benjamin Sedwick, while he was walking back to his vehicle. Sedwick has been charged with one count of burglary and two counts of aggravated sexual battery.

UVA team’s dengue fever discovery

Dr. Mariano A. Garcia-Blanco, UVA’s chair of microbiology, immunology, and cancer biology, had been in his new lab for only a week when he and his team released groundbreaking findings on the deadly dengue virus—results that could pave the way for an effective treatment against the illness.

Dengue virus is a mosquito-borne, single positive stranded RNA virus from the flavivirus family. It is usually transmitted between humans and mosquitoes. While typically found in South America, South Asia, and Africa, dengue virus has become increasingly common and has reached the United States in the past two decades.

Garcia-Blanco grew up in the Caribbean, and he and his sister had dengue fever, caused by the virus, when they were young. While Garcia-Blanco had mild symptoms, his sister was very ill.

“The syndrome looks very similar to the flu, like people are really sick for a couple of weeks,” says GarciaBlanco. “And in severe cases, it can be fatal. It can lead to hemorrhagic fever, shock, etc.”

Humans and mosquitoes can infect each other. If a mosquito bites a human carrying the pathogen, it takes it on, and can pass it to its next drink. “It grows very well in humans, but it also grows very well in mosquitoes,” says Garcia-Blanco. “We’re very far apart species and yet this virus is capable of moving back and forth between mosquito and human.”

Mother arrested

Eleanor Hunter Hoppe, a Charlottesville mother of two, has been charged with distribution of child pornography, among other federal charges. On March 20, FBI agents arrested Hoppe, 45, at a Warrenton motel, where she reportedly agreed to meet with a man—an undercover agent she communicated with on a fetish website—to participate in the sexual abuse of who she was told was the man’s 8-year-old daughter, reports The Daily Progress. Hoppe—who has worked for and supported child advocacy organizations, as well as been a victim’s advocate in the Richmond commonwealth’s attorney’s office and a UVA event planner—also allegedly sent the agent images and a video appearing to show minors being sexually abused. Hoppe, who has pleaded not guilty, told police she traveled to the motel to help the 8-year-old, but officers found lubricant, among other items, in her vehicle.

The discovery at UVA is a culmination of years of research, and was an international effort. Duke-NUS Medical School spearheaded Garcia-Blanco’s work, which largely took place in Singapore and attracted Ph.D. students from France, the United States, and other places.

Garcia-Blanco and his associates found that the virus has an accomplice. Infected mosquitoes are not just filled with dengue virus cells, but RNAs. “Whenever

All aboard

you get infected with dengue, the virus makes certain proteins, the virus looks like it’s really an RNA genome that looks like one of our messenger RNAs,” he says. “And then it makes a bunch of proteins and those proteins work to inhibit the innate immune system.”

RNA viruses have proved their dangerousness time–and-time again, most recently with the COVID-19 pandemic. “They are a global threat,” says Garcia-Blanco. “If you look at the pandemics of the last 120 years, all the big ones have been caused by RNA viruses.”

Polluting planes, trains, and automobiles no more! FlixBus’ “green fleet” has rolled into Charlottesville, offering direct transportation to 12 cities nationwide, including New York, Washington, D.C., and Gainesville.

With only 36 grams of CO2 released per kilometer when traveling by FlixBus, passengers will be doing the environment a solid with every trip they take. (For comparison, trains, cars, and planes release 63, 168, and 231 grams, respectively.) Germany-based FlixBus has partnered with atmosfair, a German nonprofit that offers offsets for greenhouse gases emitted by long-distance buses.

FlixBus tickets can be purchased online, and start at $17.99—the company manages costs by partnering with local, often family-owned, bus companies.

A second life for your stuff

How to donate, sell, or recycle your (gently) used things

Whether you are moving out, moving in together, downsizing, settling an estate, or just tired of the clutter, spring is a great time to get rid of stuff. But do the Earth a favor: Give your castoffs a second life

Reuse helps both people and the planet. Community advocates point out that lots of folks will happily use what you no longer need or want. Green activists stress that making new things uses both resources and energy, and landfill space is limited. Environmental concerns among young people “are a huge part of why the thrift industry is growing so fast,” says Linnea Revak, owner of consignment store Darling x Dashing.

Consignment is a way to score some return, in cash or store credit—and it’s often easier than selling it online. For consignment, items

bikes; Plato’s Closet focuses on teens. High Tor Gear Exchange accepts kids and adult outdoor clothing and gear—the website’s sensible guidance: “Please clean all gear prior to arrival. Remember to check pockets.”

For furniture, furnishings, and housewares, the Consignment House focuses on items “of historical or artistic value” (e.g., heirlooms, signed artwork), while Heyday and The Eternal Attic accept a wider range of antiques (including jewelry) and furnishings. Circa, one of the biggest consigners, will take almost everything décor, from furniture to tchotchkes, for cash up front. “We can arrange to pick up large items,” says co-owner Robin Slaats. “Or you can call us before an estate sale to [come out and] see what you have.” All these outlets require an appointment or preview photos before you bring anything in.

If you don’t need money back, there’s lots of donation options. Goodwill, SPCA Rum-

What about your other stuff?

must be clean, current in style, or truly vintage (not just old), and in good, working condition. Start by visiting the store or checking its website to see what the store stocks. For apparel (clothing, accessories, hats, shoes, bags, and jewelry), Natalie Dressed features top-end brands, while Agents in Style takes only luxury and designer apparel. ReThreads and Darling accept a wider range of styles. Darling’s partner store Dashing takes only men’s apparel; Arsenic & Old Lace and Low are strictly vintage. Kid to Kid (its mantra: “kids grow faster than paychecks”) accepts children’s clothing, toys, sports apparel, and

Books Blue Whale Books pays cash, while the Book Room and 2nd Act Books offer store credit; each store specializes, so check websites or call beforehand. Unless you know your books are worth something, go for donation, including to your local library: Most branches accept books in good condition for resale (the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library’s fall 2022 book sale raised $137,000 for library programs). Peter Manno of Friends of the Library, which runs the volunteer-staffed sale, asks that if you’re donating more than two or three boxes, you drop them

off at the JMRL’s Gordon Avenue branch.

Medical equipment If it’s still usable, help someone in need by donating to Goodwill or All Blessings Flow.

Music/video To sell your old vinyl or CDs, try Sidetracks, Plan 9, or Low. Each outlet has specific areas of interest, from rock to jazz to vintage. Most donation centers and libraries accept CDs and DVDs for resale. VHS and cassette tapes? Good luck.

TVs/computers/electronics Do not just dump these items (the Rivanna Solid Waste

mage, and Salvation Army take an enormous range of items from A to Z—but check their guidelines because each place has its own rules. Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore only takes furniture, furnishings, some appliances, kitchenware, and building supplies. Donation appointments aren’t required, but “are appreciated,” says assistant manager Bert Bettinger, who’s seen a lot of downsizing lately. Then there’s Twice is Nice, whose sales support programs benefiting seniors; Schoolhouse Thrift Shop, which helps fund several local church missions, including PACEM’s homeless programs; and Earlysville Exchange, whose profits fund programs and resources for community members in need.

The donation outlets are trying to help you out, provide good choices to their customers, and save resources. Leaving large, bulky or broken stuff outside their door at night is not donation, it’s dumping.

Authority holds electronic waste collection days in the spring and fall). In addition, late-model televisions and electronics are accepted at some donation centers (check beforehand, their guidelines change frequently). For older items, stores like Staples, Best Buy and Crutchfield may offer recycling options. Lots of places take used cell phones, from donation centers to SHE (Shelter for Help in Emergencies). For laptops, contact Computers4Kids, which will “take laptops less than six years old and refurbish them for students in our community to learn programming, Photoshop, and other skills,” says

Colin Learmonth, the group’s director of operations.

Bicycles Charlottesville Community Bikes accepts bicycles in good condition to be cleaned up for a new rider.

Mattresses No donation centers take mattresses. The International Rescue Committee, The Haven, and Love INC. occasionally need mattress/box springs sets (call first). If you’re willing to pay, there are services that will recycle mattress components. If all else fails, it’s off to the Ivy Materials Utilization Center—don’t just leave a mattress (or any large items) at the curb or the dumpster.

UVA student builds app to make schools safer

AUniversity of Virginia first-year engineering student has developed a smartphone app that enables high school students to more efficiently alert administrators to crises on school grounds.

The Safeline app was built by Alexander Halpern, who designed the software around an anonymous reporting system. Using a map of their school, students can pinpoint specific locations to report incidents ranging from vandalism, fights, and mental distress, to strangers and active shooters.

The app is planned to roll out as a pilot this spring, free of charge, at a public high school in Connecticut, and as a beta at a private school in Virginia.

Halpern was inspired to create Safeline after experiencing the many lockdown drills that have become the norm at schools across the country. “As I matured, those 30 minutes of silence gave me time to grapple with the unnerving reality that school shootings had become a commonplace occurrence in our society,” he said in a press release.

“I started to think about what resources students could have in the event of an incident occurring at a school,” Halpern told C-VILLE. “I found that it could be really interesting to add an element of locationbased reporting, because that could greatly reduce the incident response time.”

Students who download the Safeline app are presented with a blueprint of their school overlaid on a satellite image. In the event of a crisis scenario, users can tap a location on the map or simply report their phone location to indicate where an incident has occurred or is developing. School administration and security then receive instantaneous alerts through text or email notifications, in addition to a beeping sound if they have the Safeline Administrator Dashboard open.

Halpern says his app is designed to be anonymous, but, to prevent abuse, students must enter their phone number to log in.

“The reports will be anonymous in that their name is not tied to the report whatsoever,” says Halpern. “But if a student keeps abusing the service or keeps reporting incidents that are not actually occurring, the administration could try to figure out who the student is by their phone number or they could set limitations … on which students can report.”

Halpern began development of Safeline over the summer, before arriving at UVA in

the fall. He built the prototype entirely by himself in his free time, using Meta’s React Native for the app and ReactJS for the Administrator Dashboard. Halpern fine-tuned

the app during his first year at UVA between classes and on weekends.

The prototype was completed in about a month, after which he presented the project to the director of digital learning and technology for the Connecticut high school. He and the director have worked together for the past six months to further develop and pilot the app.

“I’ve been going back and forth with him for a long time,” says Halpern, “securing the Safeline platform, and making sure it’s secure to outside threats as well as upholding the concerns [and regulations] of a public school.”

A key feature of Safeline is its ability to facilitate swift and clear communication during potential active shooter situations. He personally experienced an active shooter scenario in November 2022, when three UVA student-athletes were shot and killed on Grounds, and UVA police urged students to “RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.”

More than a dozen incidents of gun violence have already occurred at schools and universities across the United States since the start of 2023, including a deadly shooting at a private Christian elementary school in Nashville and another at Michigan State University. According to an article in The Washington Post last updated on April 3, 377 school shootings have happened in the United States since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999—and 2022’s 46 school shootings marked the highest annual total across that same timespan.

Halpern says that he is committed to stopping gun violence in schools nationwide.

“It would be amazing for [Safeline] to be in thousands of schools across the country, and helping students to be able to play a role in keeping their school environment safe and potentially saving lives across the country,” he says. “That would be the ideal goal.”

The app is currently on iOS devices only but will be available on Android soon. To learn more, visit yoursafeline.com

or Leah Puryear, the past month has been a whirlwind. After former Charlottesville city councilor Sena Magill abruptly resigned on January 3, citing family needs, Puryear—along with 19 other candidates—applied for the job. On February 21, council unanimously selected Puryear, a former Charlottesville School Board member, to fill the vacant seat. Since then, she has been learning the ins and outs of city government—and catching up on the array of responsibilities she now has on council.

“I have always admired [Magill’s] work, and was sorry that she left, but understand that often we make decisions because of our families,” says Puryear. “I felt that the work she had done [and] that City Council was embarking on and needed to do, that I could play a role in helping them move that ball forward.”

The new councilor will finish Magill’s term—but will not be seeking another term. Former Charlottesville city councilor Bob Fenwick, wedding sales manager Natalie Oschrin, and city social services assistant Dashad Cooper have filed to run for the Democratic nomination for council. Mayor Lloyd Snook and Councilor Michael Payne are running for re-election.

“I have decided I do not wish to run for the permanent seat,” Puryear explains. “I’m just honored and thrilled that I was selected [for the job]. … I feel confident that the persons who will be elected will be able to continue the work that City Council has been charged to do.”

Leah Puryear wants to ‘move the ball forward’

Education, health, and wellness are among new councilor’s priorities

In 1980, Puryear moved from Washington, D.C., to Charlottesville to join the University of Virginia’s Upward Bound program (now known as Uplift @ UVA), which helps university-bound high school students from central Virginia develop the skills required to graduate from college. Working with these first-generation students and their families inspired Puryear—who directed Upward Bound for nearly 40 years—to run for the Charlottesville School Board in 2006.

“The students in that program are 150 percent of poverty. … [They are] very bright, articulate, and intelligent—but because of their zip codes, socioeconomic backgrounds, or ethnicities, a lot of people don’t feel that they have value, or able to achieve things,” says Puryear, who sat on the school

board for 16 years. “I didn’t believe that, [and] felt that [the students] needed to have an advocate.”

Throughout her decades in local government and education, Puryear has performed many of the duties she now has on council, from managing multi-million dollar budgets to developing strategic plans, which has made acclimating to her new job easier. She is also grateful for her fellow councilors and city employees, who have been “extremely patient” and supportive, and have answered her many questions since taking office.

Education and workforce development are among Puryear’s top priorities.

“We want people to be able to live in our city, [and] afford to live [here]. What do we need to do to make sure that those things happen?” she asks. “The people who live in our city deserve an opportunity to be educated, whether it’s through workforce development [or] our public schools, [so] that they can become independent individuals and productive members of Charlottesville.”

The new councilor is also concerned about the health and wellness of Charlottesville’s residents—and of the city’s government. “Do we have services to help support [residents’ health care needs]? … Do we have the funds to make sure that we are solvent [and] our departments are still able to do what they need to do?” she asks.

Since the fall, gun violence has spiked in Charlottesville and Albemarle County, sparking community concern and outrage. The city has seen six gun-related homicides this year—the highest number since 2017. Puryear applauds new Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis’ recent efforts to prevent and stop shootings, including engaging and building relationships with community members. Since starting the job, he has held weekly walk-and-talks in different neighborhoods, knocking on doors and speaking with residents about their concerns. And in February, he hosted a community forum on gun violence, which more than 150 people attended.

The community and police must work together to examine and address the root causes of gun violence, and propose and implement effective solutions, Puryear stresses.

“Gun violence has become overwhelming,” she says. “Police and fire have taken these jobs to protect. But what do we need to do to protect? Do we need additional mental health [professionals] to go along with the police? Do we need to have discussions like Chief Kochis is doing?”

A mental health crisis response team will eventually come to Charlottesville, thanks to Virginia’s Marcus-David Peters Act, named in honor of a 24-year-old Black high

city allocated funds for it. While it remains unclear when it will be implemented in Charlottesville, Puryear vows to support the critical reform.

“I think when people use the phrase of ‘defunding the police,’ I don’t think it’s defunding the police so that there’s no police department—[but] looking at how the funds may be reallocated to take care of all of the issues that could potentially be involved [in cases],” she says. “Or putting more money into that department for those particular issues, like mental health or emergency medical services … so that it’s not the responsibility of someone who doesn’t have a particular training.”

Regarding Charlottesville’s ongoing rezoning process, Puryear stresses the importance of listening to—and implementing—community feedback. The draft zoning ordinance proposes increasing housing density across the city, aiming to significantly increase affordable housing development and supply.

“[We need to] make certain that the citizens in Charlottesville—regardless of their zip code— understand [rezoning] and the implications of that, but also hear what they have to say,” says Puryear, “[and] whatever their feelings are, assure them that they are being heard.”

“We don’t want people to feel that, because you live in low-income or subsidized housing, that you’re being discounted,” she adds. “Or that because your home is valued at $100,000, it’s not as important as someone’s home that’s valued at $1 million. Both of those homes have value.”

Due in part to a lack of affordable housing, the number of people experiencing homelessness in the Charlottesville area has been rising, reports Charlottesville Tomorrow. This winter, the demand for overnight shelter beds was nearly double the amount of beds available, according to local shelters. To address and prevent homelessness, the city must tackle its root causes, and “not just put a BandAid on it,” says Puryear.

In January, Charlottesville formally adopted its Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent by 2030—and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. To slash the city’s emissions, Puryear supports planting more trees, electrifying the city’s buses and vehicles, and educating residents on how they can reduce their carbon footprint, among other measures.

“To a lot of people, [the climate action plan] may seem like a lofty goal,” says Puryear, “but if we follow the steps, it can be achievable.”

As for the city’s schools, Puryear is hopeful that recent pay raises will help solve the bus driver shortage. She is

school teacher who was killed by a Richmond police officer during a severe mental health crisis in 2018.

Passed in 2020, the law initially required localities to create a 988 number for mental health crises, and to develop protocols by July 2022 for when behavioral health experts, instead of law enforcement, will respond to crises related to mental health, substance use, and developmental disabilities. But last year, the Republican-majority General Assembly passed a bill allowing localities with populations of less than 40,000 to opt out of the system, and giving those with more than 40,000 residents until July 1, 2028, to implement the system.

In 2020, the city’s Marcus Alert work group began exploring how to develop the new system, and last year the

also “excited” about school reconfiguration, which will move fifth grade from Walker Upper Elementary—currently home to fifth and sixth grades—back down to elementary schools, and sixth grade up to Buford Middle School. For the first part of the massive project, the city is slated to spend $71.4 million to renovate Buford Middle School. “We are very hopeful that everything will come to fruition,” says Puryear.

Under interim city manager Michael Rogers’ leadership, Puryear is optimistic the city will solve its staffing shortage, and leadership turnover. And she hopes to help keep the city on the right path, and maintain “direction and stability.”

“I hope that at the end of December,” she says, “I am able to say that I did a good job.”

A tale of two developments

A pair of riverfront projects may have different fates

In the past few years, developers have filed proposals for some of the last vacant parcels in Charlottesville, pushing the limits of growth. This includes two projects a quarter-mile away from each other on the Rivanna River in an area where the city has never conducted a small-area plan for infrastructure.

Local firm Seven Development is behind plans for two separate apartment complexes to be built on properties within the floodplain. One 77-unit complex would be located at 900 River Rd., while another 245 units are slated for three buildings on land off of East High Street that doesn’t yet have an address.

Shimp Engineering has provided the engineering for both projects, each of which would depend on elevating the land out of the floodplain, though the latter project will require more fill dirt to be brought in.

A preliminary site plan for 900 River Rd. has been approved, but the city recently issued a third denial to the one for 0 East High St. A major sticking point on the latter is the city’s position that the planned entrances are not legal under the existing zoning code. The developer disputes that notion.

Concern from neighbors has led to one of the most organized opposition campaigns in recent years.

“We believe that the developers improperly moved the [Federal Emergency Management Agency] floodway in order to accommodate this project, potentially putting current and future residents at risk in terms of both safety and property damage,” says Zoe Edgecomb of the Circus Grounds Preservation Corporation. “Many localities, including Albemarle County, do not allow residential development in floodplains.”

Edgecomb says the group disputes the notion that the project is by-right.

“Multi-family housing, while considered a business use, has additional restrictions that consider health, safety, and welfare of residents,” she says.

The corporation is asking the city to consider buying the property to prevent its development. Council took a first step toward that earlier this year when it agreed to hire an appraiser to do a market study for the land. That work is underway.

The 0 East High proposal may go before the Planning Commission, though under Virginia law, site plans must be approved if they meet the letter of the law.

Both properties are within the scope of the Urban Rivanna River Corridor Plan that was put together by the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission. The plan called for a new design review process for properties, but no policy has yet been adopted. None of the plan precludes housing but recommendation No. 9 may signal why developers have opted to proceed.

“Affordable housing is encouraged to be located with close proximity to the river corridor supported by robust transportation system access in conformance with locally adopted land use plans,” reads page 72 of the plan.

Justin Shimp, owner of Shimp Engineering, says the developments will improve conditions overall.

“The existing concerned neighbors’ stormwater goes untreated into channels and into the river,” he says. “New higher-density projects provide treatment and are far less impactful on a per unit basis when compared to single family development.”

Shimp says providing homes for people closer to the city will result in less air pollution due to the ability of more people to walk to work.

Public Fish & Oyster team starts beef

On the seminal hip-hop album Enter the Wu-Tang, an interviewer asks the renowned rappers about their ultimate goal. Before Raekwon offers a dubious, circuitous response, Method Man sums it up: “Domination, baby.” Presumably that’s also the endgame for Daniel Kaufman, the Public Fish & Oyster proprietor who recently moved his empire from sea to land with the opening of Black Cow Chophouse. The traditional steakhouse opened on Main Street in the old Zinc/Threepenny/Little Star location in February. Kaufman spoke to C-VILLE about where Black Cow fits in his own ultimate goal.

C-VILLE: Why a steakhouse, why now?

Daniel Kaufman: I said many times that after COVID I was never opening another restaurant. The only person I would have opened a restaurant with was my former chef, Gregg Dionne. He was the longest-serving chef at Public. So, I said, if Gregg wants to do something, I’ll do it. He said he had an idea, and Black Cow was born.

How closely related to Public is this concept?

We considered putting something in the name like, by “Public Fish & Oyster”—I think we’ve developed a pretty good reputation there. I think people like us, and we do things the right way. But each restaurant operates completely independently. There are some dishes that read the same on both menus—when things are tried and trusted, it makes sense to keep doing them.

What’s on the menu at Black Cow?

Product is at the center of what we do. We are not associating with a specific farm or doing all dry-aged or all local. We don’t want to put ourselves in a box. If we find some good wagyu from Australia, we’ll make it available. We want to offer delicious and good value food, regardless of how long it has been aged. We’ll do some game, pork, and lamb, but beef is very much the heart of what we are doing.

That approach actually sounds similar to what you do at Public. That’s a good way to look at it. If I see good oysters available, I will buy them and make them available. I certainly buy from a handful of Virginia producers every single week, but we also do oysters from the Northeast, the Northwest, and even New Zealand and Mexico.

Can we assume the sides and other dishes will be seasonal?

Absolutely. We have a “little salad” we are going to include with every steak. Whenever you used to go to a restaurant, you got a salad; we’re throwing it back to those days. I was talking to Chef about what the salad would look like and he said, “Why the hell would I sell a salad with tomato, when you can only get a good tomato three months of the year?” Seasonality is very much the thing. If it’s not good, we don’t want to sell it.

What kind of bar program are you planning?

grams. He has put together an awesome craft cocktail list, and I’m working on the wine. We’ll have eight carefully selected draft taps. One thing that has been very successful at Public, and we would like to replicate at Black Cow, is the happy hour. At Public, we do dollar off raw oysters from 4 to 6pm. Here, while for the most part we don’t do composed dishes, the one exception is that from 4:30 to 6pm for happy hour, we’ll have a chef’s choice steak frites for 16 bucks.

What’s unique about Black Cow compared to other traditional steakhouses?

Little Star was a great restaurant. They were succeeding. They just didn’t want to do it anymore. And one thing that they had that we might not have otherwise done on our own, is this grill—the most magnificent grill. Every piece of meat is going to be done over oak wood smoke on that grill. The flavor is absolutely unbelievable.

There’s been some change on West Main Street lately. What’s your take?

I’ve been hearing for nine years about how things are changing. But Oakhart and Maya and Orzo, those guys are all killing it. I wouldn’t want to be in any other neighborhood in Charlottesville. It’s a beautiful street and at the center of everything. I have been very lucky and privileged to be supported by this community for nine years now, and I really hope they welcome this as a new addition to West Main.

Our bar manager is Scott Coales, who has a lot of experience running beverage proEvery piece of meat is going to be done over oak wood smoke on that grill. The flavor is absolutely unbelievable.

‘Everything is Extraordinary’ in Chroma’s combined show

“Tom Chambers and Fax Ayres: Everything is Extraordinary,” currently on view at Chroma Projects at Vault Virginia, features two artists using distinctive approaches to alter and enhance photographs in order to capture a mood, an evocation of a place, objects, or some mystical imaginary region.

Fax Ayres enjoys playing with perception. This is evident in his transformation of ordinary objects into something special, and the playful shifting back and forth between reality and fiction that’s a recurring theme throughout his work. Photographing each piece incrementally, Ayres works on small sections, taking as many as 200 photographs to end up with the 100 good ones that comprise a finished image.

“I like the fact that they can appear to be paintings or photographs,” says Ayres. “I have a definite affinity for some of the Dutch painters who did those hyper photorealistic paintings.”

To achieve the crystalline quality of his images, Ayres uses light painting. With the camera mounted on a tripod and tethered to a computer, Ayres holds a remote trigger in one hand and a small flashlight in the other. He opens the shutter and skims the light across the surface of the area he’s photographing, throwing the object into high relief. The shutter speed depends on a variety of factors, including the surface area size, how shiny or dull it is, and even how far away it is from the camera.

“I keep the shutter open with a manual count,” he says. “Then I close the shutter and look at the image to see if the highlights look right, if the texture of the surface is revealed in the way I want, etc.”

One can see the result of the process in the remarkable reflecting, haptic, and even emotional qualities Ayres is able to wrest from the ordinary, everyday objects he uses. To preserve the clarity of the work, Ayres has his images printed on smooth, matte aluminum.

At first, “The Usual Suspects” appears to be a sober and imposing work, but then we notice a plastic monkey and parakeet amidst the oil cans, padlocks, and weights. It’s a delightful touch that disrupts the unrelenting browns and grays of old metal by adding color, humor, and frivolity.

In “Portal,” Ayres takes this levity further, creating a faux landscape of fake trees and grass, a dog figurine, and a macabre novelty lamp, all set within a car gear part that’s resting on an old-school style level. These functional objects, made from steel and wood, shine under Ayres’ exacting eye— their humble ordinariness transformed into beauty by proximity to the garish artificial scene they’re paired with.

Ayres steps outside the studio with the striking “Birch Trees” and “Pool Gates.” In these works, intense lighting and hyperrealism work together to produce a curious artificiality that adds drama and suspense.

In his allegorical photomontages, Tom Chambers captures the innate beauty of young girls in a way that exalts them while preserving their innocence. In Chambers’ hands, this central theme yields powerful images.

According to Chambers, “the photographs present something that is possible but not probable,” a land where girls rule (or at least have agency) and feral beings are safe. He photographs his subjects in the studio, while placing them within landscapes that tend to be rugged, northern coastal settings—the perfect foil for the tender girlish pulchritude depicted.

In some images, the girls are either holding or interacting with natural beings—a wolf, birds, fireflies, which are in peril because of demonizing, loss of habitat, or pollution. In these mysterious tableaux, one has the sense that the girl is in control; a junior Mother Nature tending to and protecting her charges. “In each of my images, I’m going for my own expression of a feeling through telling a story,” he says. “I hope the viewer also connects in some way emotionally with his own personal interpretation.”

Chambers clothes his models in garments that sync perfectly with the timbre of the work. Their frocks, muted in color and style, have a timeless elegance about them that’s unusual and piques our interest. One girl, in a plain white shift, sports an arm in a matching sling. It’s unexpected and provocative, engaging the viewer’s curiosity and dispelling any whiffs of cloying sentimentality such enchanting subjects might arouse. Another girl wears a black and white checked dress that echoes the speckled hens at her feet. Still another wears pale pink, the same shade as the teapot she holds.

There’s an unmistakably elegiac quality to the work. The fragility depicted, whether of nature or young girls, is under constant threat. In these brave doe-like visages—serene, fearless, immutable—we see beauty certainly, but we also see strength. And yet, this strength is tempered by our understanding of the girl’s unequivocal vulnerability. It is this last quality together with the subjects’ patent goodness that makes them the ideal incarnation for humanity in these beguiling examples of memento naturae.

WINE DOWN

WHAT’S DELISH AT LOCAL WINERIES?

CHISWELL FARM WINERY 2021 Cabernet Franc

Our first Cabernet Franc is medium-bodied and moderately tannic. The nose suggests notes of old leather and light smoke. The palate leans towards pepper and black currant, and the finish is smooth. Pair with smoked pulled pork, spaghetti Bolognese, or hamburgers on the grill!

With a glass of one of our award winning wines, enjoy the beautiful scenery from our lawn, or a cozy chair inside, where you’ll discover a variety of inviting spaces. While indoor seating is limited, there are many options for outdoor seating, including rocking chairs on the covered porch and dining tables on the lawn for small groups. You’re also welcome to bring your own folding chairs and blankets to sit further out on the hill. All seating is first-come, first-served. Ages 21+, no dogs or other pets permitted on the property. For a family-friendly experience, visit our wine shops at Chiles Peach Orchard or Carter Mountain Orchard. Make sure to check out our exciting events calendar online to stay up-to-date on all things happening at Chiswell!

Wine is currently available by the glass, flight, or bottle. We have a full menu of seasonal boards, paninis, small bites and snacks to pair well with any of our wines (outside food is not permitted). Wine sales stop 30 minutes prior to closing.

53RD WINERY AND VINEYARD

2022 Chardonel

Try our 100% estate grown Chardonel. What I enjoy about this wine is the crisp acidity with its aromas and flavors of green apples, lime zest and citrus. A great mouthfeel throughout the palate makes this a wine that is enjoyable on its own or, as I like wine, paired with food. It will be great with shrimp scampi, chicken piccata, cioppino, or fried chicken, yes, fried chicken! Paired with our recent shrimp boil at the winery, it was perfect. It’s a very versatile wine. Our Chardonel is delightful with Manchego cheese and some Kalamata olives while enjoying a sunny day. Try something different and authentic. 209 cases made. Drink now through 2026.

A few notes from winegrower and owner, Dave Drillock:

If you are planning a visit, come for the wine and enjoy the chill. We are down to earth and love to share our enthusiasm for wine. We just revel in what we do, growing, making and selling wine! Open 7 days a week, 11am to 5pm, we offer our 100% Virginia wine by the bottle, glass, flight

or tasting. Enjoy your visit at our meadow-like setting in rural Louisa County. We offer wellspaced indoor and outdoor seating and customers are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets, chairs and blankets. Children and pets are welcome, but pets must always remain outside of buildings and on a leash. Our friendly staff focuses on serving quality wine at a great escape! CROSSKEYS WINERY

Letizia

Letizia is made from 100% Chambourcin which was picked, processed and fermented specifically for sparkling wine. Chambourcin’s great acidity and fruit flavors are well suited to sparkling rosé; and unique to Letizia is the ripeness at which the grapes are picked. The riper fruit yields bright raspberry aromas along with notes pineapple and guava. Refreshing acidity is balanced by natural residual sugar, which further contributes to tropical fruit flavors on the palate. Vividly pink, vigorously bubbly, and vibrantly fruity.

CrossKeys Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery located in the heart of beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Our approach is to grow, by hand, the highest quality fruit using careful canopy management and yield balance to achieve 100% estate-grown

wines that are truly expressive of the varietal and soils here at CrossKeys. Our first vines were planted in 2001 and we have only grown since then. Our 125acre estate currently houses more than 30 acres of vines with plans for more planting in the future. We currently grow 12 varietals of grapes all used to produce our one of a kind award-winning wines. We offer wine tastings throughout the day. Our knowledgeable tasting room associates will guide you through tasting our wines whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran. We love large groups and want to make sure your experience at CrossKeys Vineyards is extraordinary. We request that large groups call the vineyard 48 hours in advance to set up a reserved group tasting. The group will have a reserved table, staffing, and a cheese plate included with price.

HORTON VINEYARDS

2021 Viognier

Viognier was introduced into the state of Virginia by Dennis Horton in 1991. He was met with a lot of opposition, being told it would not grow or produce enough fruit. Dennis Horton started “Viognier is the red drinkers white.” It is full bodied, bold white has honey aromas and smooth peach and apricot flavors.

Marking history

In 1959, 7-year-old Charles Alexander (Alex-Zan) walked into Venable Elementary School, accompanied by his mother, Elizabeth Alexander, and fellow classmates Marvin and William Townsend. He was among the first Black students to attend the newly integrated Charlottesville City Schools. On April 8, just down the road from Venable, Alex-Zan celebrated the unveiling of the Black History Pathway sign on Fourth Street between West Main and Preston Avenue. The honorary naming is part of the ongoing effort to preserve and highlight the city’s African American history. “This pathway and celebration are making sure that we maintain and observe history,” says Alex-Zan. “If we’re not careful, we’ll lose this history.”
