sumptuous aesthetic.

57

58

The grandeur of the staircase takes center stage, as colossal black slabs of marble evoke the spirit of grand Italian spaces whilst arches unfold above in all their magnificence, painted in gray velvety stucco, directing attention to their classical lines and providing tantalizing glimpses of adjoining rooms. A contemporary pendant light descending through the staircase’s void adds to the brass accents that are found throughout the residence.

59

In the kitchen, rich velvet stools highlight the gold threads of the stunning Paonazzetto marble benchtop and bookmatched splashback

Personal paintings and collected artworks adorn the walls, enhanced by a mix of vintage and contemporary European furniture and an array of patterned wallpaper treatments, which inject rich bursts of color. Delicate finger tiles crafted from brass elegantly trace the curves of the arches, infusing the house with a luminous quality that beautifully offsets the darker tones and accentuates the visual transitions between spaces and materials.

60

62

The arches, ever-present in the design narrative, resume their tale within the stunning master-suite. From the curved bedhead in a rich velvet that echoes the russet tones of the cranes in the Gucci wallpaper, to the recessed shelves, steel-framed windows, and doorways leading to the adjacent ensuite, arches imbue the space with a sense of fluidity. A backdrop of gray fabric wallpaper adds texture, providing a perfect canvas for the gray marble bath and black vanities. Brass accents, found in the arched mirrors, intricate details, and delicate finger tiles, enhance the curvaceous forms, transforming these rooms into an enchanting symphony of graceful glamour.

BUSH Meets BEACH 66

Bush meets beach in this striking contemporary residence by multiaward-winning Hedger Constructions. Built to respond to its stunning location in Anglesea situated between Victoria’s spectacular Great Ocean Road, Bass Strait to the south and Great Otway Park to the west, the home has been expertly constructed with a sustainable approach to modern family living. The owner’s brief was for an impressive yet functional family home that incorporated natural, low maintenance materials that would endure the demanding conditions of the Australian coast. Based on simplicity and balance, architect Martin Rubenstein of Format Architects has designed a contemporary home that whilst being visually evocative in shape, sits in complete harmony with its idyllic surroundings.

With a unique, curved façade, the home features an expansive upper-level terrace that cantilevers out over the home’s entry, taking in the stunning ocean vistas. A rammed earth wall guides visitors up the floating concrete stairs to the home’s impressive entry, which is via an oversized pivoting, Spotted Gum door. The rammed earth, concrete and spotted gum, which have been used extensively in the home’s construction were all chosen for their ability to weather well and the organic quality of each of the materials allows the home to blend beautifully with the surrounding natural environment.

The home is constructed largely of rammed earth, which is a combination of sand, gravel, silt and a small amount of clay. This material has been the foundation of some of the world’s oldest structures, and while most stick framed homes are given an estimated lifespan of 49 years, a rammed-earth home can maintain its integrity for over 1000 years. Rammed earth was the ideal choice given its durability, superior thermal and noise cancelling properties and propensity to deter common pests like termites that can plague Australian homes.

68

Pared back, but highly detailed, the interior incorporates highly complex artisan elements such as bespoke concrete benchtops and hard plaster render to wet areas. Subtle plays on texture and matt and gloss finishes add visual interest to what is a cohesive design approach which includes, American Oak custom joinery and engineered flooring, and brushed gold tapware and accessories throughout the 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom home.

69

Concealing the plumbing, roofing, downpipes and wall capping and finishing the exterior in a polished render has added to the home’s striking visual appeal.

70

Feature timber to the façade, complements timber batten privacy screening each in spotted gum chosen for its ability to age well and connect the home to the surrounds.

The inspired floorplan has answered the client’s brief for a home that would accommodate their large extended family during peak holiday periods, incorporating areas to come together as a family as well as spaces to retreat to in solitude, whilst maintaining an airy and open feel throughout the entire home. Emphasising the connection to nature and bringing the outdoors in, the central courtyard ensures that natural light can penetrate all areas of the home - even during winter, reducing energy consumption and further adding to the sustainable qualities of this stylish home. With the quality of both the chosen materials and the craftsmanship

WATERFRONT Luxury Located in the Gold Coast’s exclusive enclave of Mermaid Waters, this spectacular home by Capital Luxury Residences offers the ultimate waterfront living experience. Situated on a generous site boasting a 30m river frontage onto an open canal, the home incorporates over 890sqm of luxury living which has been cleverly designed to take full advantage of the surrounds and maximise the breathtaking water views out to the Gold Coast city skyline.

82

For the homeowners’, the primary objectives were to create a space where their children could visit for years to come that would evoke the ambiance of a luxury hotel. Despite having to overcome some obstacles, such as the council requirement to allocate a portion of land to act as flood storage, and the need to drill an additional 12 meters deeper than anticipated to get past rock to create the stability piers, CLR have created a stunning contemporary home that defines luxury family living. The inspired U-shaped floorplan allows residents to enjoy panoramic river and Gold Coast skyline views from all angles of the home, placing emphasis on connection between interior and exterior living spaces, whilst the exquisite material selection and finishes well and truly fulfil the homeowners desire for a luxurious hotel experience within their own home.

83

In the kitchen, scalloped (reverse flute) cabinetry, mimics the rolling water of the river and ocean surrounding the home as a reference to the stunning coastal location, complement by a custom designed and fabricated curved brass rangehood, custom brass tapware and brass details on the curved legs of the island bench, adding refined elegance and a touch of glamour to the open plan living space. Creating a stunning focal-point at the centre of the home, visible from both the rear and front of the property through expansive panes of glass, is a striking sculptural staircase with Marquina black marble treads. Above the staircase, a 4m wide skylight adds even more wow factor to this spectacular architectural feature which also ensures the home is flooded with natural light.

84

Marble has been used extensively in all the bathrooms including custom Cianna grey marble tiles on the floors and walls and Marquina black marble highlighting the shower areas. Incorporating 6 bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms and multiple communal spaces, this luxurious modern residence easily accommodates family gatherings whilst ensuring everyone can also retreat in privacy. The extensive outdoor areas, including the alfresco dining area, sunken fire-pit with built-in seating, poolside lounging area, ¼ basketball court, grassy space, private beach area, and 12m pontoon, further enhance the entertainment possibilities and create a luxury resort-like atmosphere.

Sustainable

LUXURY This contemporary harbourfront home by Mardini Constructions stands as a

testament to the multi-award-winning builder’s reputation for delivering exceptional

results with difficult and complex projects. Situated on a steep sloping site in Henley, overlooking Wallumatta Bay and the Parramatta River, the existing 3 bedroom home was completely demolished. The site then underwent extensive excavation to accommodate the new 5 bedroom contemporary residence which magnificently combines luxury family living with sustainable design.

86

Mardini Constructions worked closely with the client and architects on the home’s design which was commenced by Algorry Zappia & Associates and further refined by Designcorp Architects. The brief called for a high calibre home of robust construction that would suit both the demands of family living and its waterfront location and construction consequently embraced a myriad of durable, low maintenance materials, including exposed concrete, recycled hardwoods, cedar, sandstone and marble. At the property’s entry, walls created from bricks that were cleaned and repurposed from the original home, a fence made from sandstone excavated from the site, and recycled hardwood timber on the front façade demonstrates the commitment to sustainability that is evident in every aspect of this unique project.

87

Entering the home, an overhead void floods the area with natural light through double height glazing and a spectacular exposed concrete staircase that was constructed insitu by Mardini, creates a dramatic focal point and emphasises the exceptional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail found throughout this sophisticated modern residence.

COASTAL Winner For Queensland custom builders J & B Projects, the completion of this

contemporary luxury residence overlooking the pristine waters at NSW’s Cabarita Beach came with its fair share of obstacles. The project commenced with some challenging excavation due to the enviable cliff-side location being essentially a giant rock. Then came covid border closures which created considerable difficulties due to 90% of their trades living in Queensland. Despite the issues, J & B pushed through finalising a spectacular coastal residence that saw it awarded a 2022 Master Builders NSW 'Excellence in Housing' award for Best Contract Home in its category.

98

Designed to take advantage of the spectacular ocean outlook and maximise natural ventilation and lighting, the three level home features fixed open glazed systems on all sides of the building, enhancing the connection to the stunning natural surroundings. Utilising low maintenance materials that can withstand harsh coastal conditions, the precise angular lines of the home create a striking contemporary façade that combines concrete with timber-look aluminum screening, blending harmoniously with the coastal surrounds.

99

Built over three levels that includes a rooftop deck with entertaining pavilion, the home features 4 bedrooms each with its own ensuite – the master also with a steam room, a games room, large open plan living, dining and kitchen and a 3 car garage. A material palette that includes extensive use of natural stone and timber bring the organic quality of the surrounding environment into the home’s interior creating spaces that are warm and inviting despite the concrete shell.

100

Considerable emphasis has also been placed on sustainability. The thermal qualities of the concrete structure already reducing energy consumption, enhanced by an 8kw solar system that powers the entire building, including hot water and pool heating. Water usage is also minimised thanks to a 10kL in-ground tank that services the gardens irrigation needs and all tapware and toilets are 5-star rated. The outcome is a gorgeous sustainable worthy of both its award and its idyllic location.

Brett Whiteley is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. He won the Art Gallery of NSW Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes several times, and his artistic career was bolstered by his celebrity status in Australia and overseas. He worked across painting, sculpture and the graphic arts, and is best known for his sensual and lyrical paintings of interiors, nudes and harbour scenes. Born in Sydney, Whiteley was sent to boarding school in Bathurst in 1948. Returning to Sydney in 1956, he started working as a commercial artist in the studio of the Lintas Advertising Agency in Sydney, began life-drawing classes at the Julian Ashton Art School and occasionally joined John Santry’s sketch club, through which he came to know the Australian landscape painter Lloyd Rees, who was a strong influence. On weekends Whiteley painted around the New South Wales country towns of Bathurst, Hill End and Sofala, producing works such as Sofala 1958. In 1959 he was awarded the Italian Government Travelling Art Scholarship, which was judged by Australian artist Russell Drysdale at the Art Gallery of NSW. Whiteley remained in Europe for the next decade, exhibiting his work regularly in group exhibitions in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin and establishing an international reputation. He also spent time in the USA – staying at New York’s Chelsea Hotel, where he associated with counter-culture celebrities such as musicians Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan – and in Fiji.

Back in Sydney at the end of 1969, Whiteley moved to Lavender Bay and became involved in the Yellow House artists’ collective in Kings Cross. His work became highly desired by collectors, especially his large-scale, brilliantly-coloured interiors and landscapes strongly influenced by French artist Henri Matisse – such as Big Orange Sunset 1974 and Self Portrait in the studio 1976. In 1976 he won both the Archibald Prize for portraiture and the Sulman Prize for genre painting and, the following year, the Wynne Prize for landscape. He won all three prizes in 1978 (the first artist to do so) and the Wynne a third time in 1984. In 1991 he was awarded an Order of Australia.

Brett

Whiteley

Whiteley’s art was intimately connected to his tumultuous, creative life. From the late 1970s, his self-portraits – such as Art, Life and the Other Thing 1978 – began to trace his heroin addiction, which increasingly impacted his life and career. Whiteley died of a methadone overdose in Thirroul on the New South Wales south coast in 1992. His last studio and home in Sydney’s Surry Hills is now a museum managed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Starting with people I met through working in the pottery and meeting artists , going to fairs , galleries and every unique store in every town I drove through When younger and rudderless and so poor I had no money to bey things so I was a beachcomber searching for driftwood and stunning things washed up on the beach and at every trash and treasure market I went too all the way back to the beach when I couldn’t afford art materials I would look on the beach for bits of broken weathered plastic for colour and objects for collage

tom sharp

Sharp was born in Bellevue Hill, New South Wales in 1942, and educated at Cranbrook private school, where one of his teachers was the artist Justin O’Brien. In 1960, Sharp enrolled at the National Art School at East Sydney. He was one of the editors of Oz, an Australia/ UK alternative/underground satire magazine published from 1963 to 1973 and associated with the international counterculture of that era. Sharp was called Australia’s foremost pop artist. He wrote the lyrics of the Cream song “Tales of Brave Ulysses,” and created the cover art for Cream’s Disraeli Gears and Wheels of Fire albums. He designed at least two posters for Australia’s premier contemporary circus, Circus Oz, including the ‘World-famous’/’Non-Stop Energy’ design. Sharp’s involvement with the restoration of Luna Park in the 1970s proved a bittersweet experience. In 1979, as pressure mounted to redevelop the prime harbourside site, a fire in the Luna Park Ghost Train claimed seven lives, including a father and his two sons. The fire was a turning point in Sharp’s life; like many others he firmly believed that it was a deliberate act of terrorism aimed at destroying the park and making the site available for redevelopment. In a 2010 interview on the ABC Radio National program The Spirit of Things, he revealed that the fire and the circumstances surrounding it had exerted a profound effect on his spiritual outlook.

Then moving to a kiln under the house and I threw on the potters wheel daily As my contacts grew and a small career in art and design began to grow I took the opportunity to collect from what was in my midst I also grew my love for furniture and objects and would hunt through every market and out of the way stores , old railways yards , foundries etc to find diverse and wonderful things

Regarded as Australia’s leading sculptor, Robert Klippel consistently developed a distinct personal language of sculptural forms over his long career. Approaching the surface of each work as a logical expression of it’s interior structure and processes, his ambition was to make sculpture inspired by a poetic synthesis between the twin energies – organic and mechanical – that he saw as defining life and culture in the 20th century. For the last three decades of his life, Klippel worked out of separate studio-rooms in his harbourside home in the suburb of Birchgrove, engaging in the different activities of drawing, collage, welding, woodwork, clay modeling and plastic assemblage that responded to the creative principles he had established decades earlier.

robert klippel

To make a living I made art and bought restored and sold furniture with a constancy of keeping as much of what I found and only selling things when I needed too , which was way too often and I remember things I have sold to get by and cringe that I had let it go when time going past showed me just how rare that thing was

Douglas Dundas (1900-1981), painter, trained at the Sydney Art School with Julian Ashton. In 1927, he won the Society of Artists’ Travelling Scholarship, which enabled him to study at the London Polytechnic and in Paris with André Lhote. Returning to Australia in 1929, he held his first show at the Macquarie Gallery. Two years later, he began to teach full-time at the East Sydney Technical College (later the National Art School). He was the head teacher of painting from 1938 to 1960, and head of the school until 1965. Married to the painter Dorothy Thornhill, Dundas is particularly known for his views of the streets of inner Sydney – Paddington, Darlinghurst, Rose Bay - rendered in a Modernist style. He also painted the Canberra landscape, and a number of selfportraits.

Calder is widely regarded as the artist who made sculpture move, forging a practice in dialogue with the world in motion and the motion in things. His radical and pioneering methods of making art – understood both technically and conceptually – changed the course of modern art. Alexander Calder: Radical Inventor introduces audiences to the full breadth of Calder’s influential career as an inventor of new artistic forms. The exhibition provides a rich overview of Calder’s extensive oeuvre, including his explorative twodimensional studies of line and space, his three-dimensional wire portraits and circus figures, as well as his most acclaimed artistic inventions, the mobile and the stabile. “[One[ cannot see, or even conceive of a thing from all possible points of view, simultaneously.... To finish the work [one[ must approximate.” Alexander Calder is best known for his hanging mobiles. Born into a family of artists, Calder committed to a career in art in his mid-20s and traveled frequently in the subsequent years between New York and Paris, where he befriended members of the international avant-garde. Calder’s interest in movement appeared early in his figurative wire sculptures, which have a mechanical sensibility. In 1931 Calder gave form to an entirely new type of abstract art: the mobile. Some of these objects operated with motors, but his real breakthrough came with his creation of hanging mobiles. They consist of abstract shapes connected by wires and move freely with the air currents in a room. In addition to his mobiles and stabiles, or stationary objects, Calder worked across many media, including painting, jewelry, drawing, printmaking, textiles, and domestic objects, and he undertook commissions for large-scale public artworks around the world.

Cherry Hood is best known for winning the Archibald Prize in 2002. Prior to that win and a fresh graduate of Sydney College of the Arts in 1999 and 2000 she’d had two exhibitions of her huge face paintings at the very edgy, Mori Gallery in the Haymarket. She came to critical acclaim in Australia and these two shows brought attention to her work from New York where a story and image appeared in the NY Interview Magazine. She was soon directing the hang of a new series of paintings at Dietch Projects in SoHo! Followed up by shows in LA and San Francisco. Toronto and Vancouver were next.

Grant Featherston Grant Featherston stands at the pinnacle of Australian design. His forward thinking organic style makes his designs some of the most sought after today. Grant Featherston was a pioneer of uniquely Australasian design Straight out of WW2 he designed his iconic ‘Countour’ series. This was a set of organically sculpted ply chairs, plushly upholstered. Featherston was no copycat; nothing like this had been seen in Australia before. They remain some of the most sought after mid century design pieces out there.

There’s plenty we know about what we do and even more a lack of knowledge , yet driven by obsession and passion and love we have accumulated this body of work and spent years combining the collection and the gaol

In a world where the art of the icon is in such great demand, he brings something new and exciting to this hugely popular genre. Seeking EXPRESSIONS of INTEREST

The majestic 1928 Spanish Art Deco theatre in the heart of Daylesford has housed all manner of incarnations and for the last 6 years it has sat waiting for new life to be breathed within. Our Daylesford gallery has for the past 9 years been right next door to this building and we are so excited to grow and spill into the walls next to it. We are believers in and workers in an old fashioned approach to bricks and mortar retail and enjoy the stage that having a store on the street with personal interactions with clients brings. We are in the exciting process of seeking expressions of interest from other creative businesses in areas such as hospitality, retail, design, fashion, performance / entertainment etc to join our new precinct smack bang between the two roundabouts on Vincent St in the heart of Daylesford. If you have been thinking of coming to Daylesford for more than just a visit, or expanding into Regional Victoria…please contact us at: therex@bromleyandco.com or call Yuge on 0414361755 and we can share some more details about our vision. We already have a number of great operators looking to join our new precinct, however we want to ensure we have a mix that will buoy each and every one within so not only do individual operators thrive, but the entire precinct comes alive. Look forward to seeing you in Daylesford! Yuge & David xxx

Eclectic

With a foundation built on the experience of Swedish artisan John Fredriksson who brought his trade, philosophy and expertise to Australia in 1986, Antique Floors have consistently delivered some of Sydney’s most beautiful floors. Limited only by the level of creative expression clients allow, each luxurious floor is lovingly constructed to become a feature of the home, built to last generations and age gracefully with the home. Antique Floors’ bespoke flooring was the timeless aesthetic, Mr D. size. Antique Floors decided to start laying the parquet from the North-West corner of the living room, and, as a result, the hallway has an interesting and quite unexpected angular visual impact. How was your experience with Antique Floors? Antique Floors stood out miles above its competitors. They have an exceptionally large showroom where the floor is made from samples of the many types of timber flooring they make and install, not just samples on boards on wall racks. Martin was as informed as possible about what I may have wanted and how it could look. My experience with everyone at Antique Floors was one of dealing with only talented, dedicated and professional people, plus the installers and floor-finisher were absolute craftspeople who love their work, which is what has ensured of the exceptional end result that has been achieved. To see more of this project and interview please go to customhomesmag.com

How did you decide on the flooring you chose? I have always admired the Italians and French for their ability to create modern interiors within ancient buildings, and these buildings quite often have beautiful French oak parquet floors. The architecture of my apartment, although new, provided an opportunity to partly replicate this ambience through parquet and panelling and remote-controlled wideslat timber Venetians that disappear into the ceiling when raised. So, I wanted French oak parquet, the pattern I chose is called Versailles. What do you feel the flooring brings to the home? The flooring is the anchor to the apartment’s design. It was what I first decided upon, and subsequently, everything else was designed after that to complement the floor. For this reason, there are no floor rugs and the furniture ‘floats’ so that the long sections of the parquet flow uninterrupted, thereby providing a sensation of greater length and of greater

from moving between so many countries. Walking through the residence, each room was in a different colour which for me as a child was so fascinating and captivating. The use of different textile, textures and the brass details was just dazzling. Definitely, something that has left a footprint on my work. Later I found out that the residence is called “The Pearl Palace”, also known as “Shams Palace”, which without a doubt, lives up to its name. It was designed by William Wesley Peters who was an apprentice to and the son-inlaw of Frank Lloyd-Wright. If you get a chance, do Google it there is a great article about “The Pearl Palace” by “Yomadic” which is worth reading. Unfortunately, the Palace has not been looked after and has deteriorated immensely and is now abandoned since the invasion of Iran by the Islamic Republic in 1979, but even from the dated photos, you can get a sense of its former glory. This residence definitely captured my heart and mind as a child. A place I tend to recall and refer to from time to time, and who knows, maybe one day I will have the honour to help renovate it. What do you love most about your work?

The Pearl Palace

The best part of my work is connecting with my clients. Working with different personalities and striving to deliver their dream interior is what I find most exciting. Designing someone’s home is one of the most personal connections you can build with a client. You learn their daily habits and their way of living, and depending on the project, I sometimes get to spend 6-12 months with them, which in many cases has turned into wonderful friendships. Through the years, I have sat with so many families, and each one has their own unique way of using their home. I just love that. Have you ever had any really unusual or difficult client requests? Haven’t we all… :)) But again, referring to my previous answer, it just gives me a new challenge to overcome.

A Home For

THE FUTURE There are many reasons why people choose to renovate rather than relocate or build a new home. One of those is simply because they love where they live. Perhaps it’s an ideal location, or maybe it’s the sentimental attachment to family moments shared within, regardless, engaging a company to work on your beloved home, comes with a significant amount of trust. Requiring additional space, a more functional layout and update of the interiors, the owners of this Aspley property, entrusted the vision for their home to Brisbane’s Style Kitchens by Design. The outcome is a luxurious modern Italian style interior that connects the home to the client’s past and future.

This glamorous new kitchen is without doubt, the highlight of the project. The expansive space features endless storage positioned around an island bench and a built-in dining table. They have been finished with a gleaming natural marble stone benchtop and engineered stone has been chosen for the workbench and around the splashback . Balancing the glamour of the brass detailing and luxurious European appliances, that include Billi tap and V-ZUG induction cooktop and ovens, feature stone cladding has been used on the base of the island bench and a wall of timber veneer cabinetry add an organic quality and inviting warmth to the heart of the home. A window splash back and row of skylights ensure the area is flooded in natural light.

Clifftop

MINIMALISM Perched on a cliff in the sought after seaside town of Scarborough, NSW, and offering panoramic ocean views, this new contemporary home by Tass Construction Group has been meticulously designed, engineered and constructed to endure the distinctive demands presented by its coastal clifftop setting.

190

Working with a long narrow block, the home’s striking modern facade is defined by two rectilinear structures clad in Victorian Sillvertop Ash, which will weather and age over time, adding an organic quality to the home, and beautifully complementing the stunning natural surrounds. Meticulous attention to detail was given to every aspect of the build, ensuring the home could stand up against harsh weather conditions, this included heavy bracing to comply with wind rating standards, and materials were carefully selected for wind rating compliance whilst simultaneously incorporating the client’s vision for their new home into the design. Entering through an impressive iron door, the home’s minimalist aesthetic continues in the interior, with an industrial-style vibe created through a material selection that includes exposed stackbond brickwork, custom concrete benchtops and brushed copper tapware. Paying homage to the site’s history, the brick was chosen to reflect that which was used in the old Scarborough Post Office, adding an element of nostalgic charm to the home.

191

The expansive open plan living area maximises the breathtaking 180-degree views which are framed by floor-to-ceiling windows both on the lower and upper level that houses the master suite, this is accessed through a unique perforated steel suspended walkway, further adding to the edgy urban appeal of the home. A further two bedrooms are located at the front of the property that also features a car turntable for easy access on to the busy street. The result is an extraordinary custom home that brings the client’s clifftop dream to life, showcasing Tass Construction Group’s unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.

VILLACasa

Designed by Reece Keil Design and built by Tidal Constructions, this gorgeous Mediterranean inspired home was conceived as the builder’s own ‘forever home’ and saw Tidal awarded the 2022 Gold Coast MBA Home of the Year. Working with an expansive 4497sqm elevated building site in the Gold Coast’s Reedy Creek, a primary focus of the design brief was to take maximum advantage of the spectacular views that extended out to the ocean. This proved a little more difficult with the client’s requesting a two bedroom dwelling to reside in, that needed to be constructed prior to the design being finalised. This required strategic planning and positioning of the dwelling on the site so that it could seamlessly integrate into the final 5 bedroom home design.

200

201

Utilising the topography of the site, the home was designed over three levels, creating various ‘wings’ that would optimise the breathtaking views while simultaneously creating distinct living zones within the home. This approach created private spaces to retreat to, while the interconnected living areas foster a sense of unity and interaction throughout the entire residence. Referencing the Mediterranean inspired design, soft curves and arches feature extensively throughout the home. On the lower level each set of arched doorways allow the home to be seamlessly opened up to the outside to enjoy coastal breezes and the stunning ocean vistas.

A juxtaposition of raw and refined surfaces celebrate the intriguing relationship between these two contrasting elements - this includes extensive use of concrete which has been used in both the construction and internal fabric of the home, creating an interesting dichotomy of contemporary & classic aesthetics which adds to the home’s unique appeal. A garden with

HEART & SOUL For founder and Director of multi-award-winning COS Design, Steve Taylor, the creation of the gardens and rear outdoor entertaining space of this Mornington Peninsula home was a project of passion, very close to his heart. Having designed the home itself with striking features that include a red-brick tower-like structure, and incorporating fabulous spaces for indoor plantings, the isolation period during covid presented the perfect opportunity to finish the gardens and create a sophisticated outdoor entertaining space for his new family home. Working with the home’s unique architecture, a slightly awkward shaped sloping block, and with the main living area situated on the upper-level completely disconnected from the garden below, considerable thought and imagination was required to create outdoor spaces that would harmonise with the home and present a compelling invitation to occupants to head downstairs and enjoy Australia’s great outdoors. Executed in COS’s renowned, award-winning style, every inch of available space has been utilised to incorporate everything you could possibly desire for refined outdoor living, including a day bed by the pool that includes built in stools and a swim up bar, custom mosaic tiled spa, covered alfresco area, firepit, fireplace and pizza oven - all surrounded by lush coastal gardens.

244

The pool is positioned 1.2m above ground level to reduce the need for pool fencing while still meeting regulations. Limestone fingers extend along the pool’s perimeter, adding a contemporary edge to the design.

With help from Exquisite Pools, Steve put his heart and soul into the project, personally building the entire landscape himself on weekends and after hours, in between working on clients’ design projects. Exceptional planning and execution has resulted in a space that captivates from every angle. Muted tones and colours, foliage contrasts and the unique shapes & forms of the hardscape creating a rich and engaging tapestry that perfectly complements the home’s exterior. The pool’s flowing curves and soft garden beds beautifully contrasting with the building’s strong lines - achieving perfect balance and a outdoor living area that is truly connected to the home and its occupants. BEAUTY

As part of a significant overhaul of this heritage listed Melbourne home, multi-award-winning Aloha Pools were given the task of reimagining the swimming pool and courtyard area. Using a contemporary design approach and utilising unique materials including black Zimbabwe stone, they’ve created a compelling space that oozes style and sophistication whilst beautifully complementing the classic architecture of the home.

248

The pool was enhanced with a newly designed overflow edge and custom stone grating around the perimeter and tiled with gorgeous ceramic mosaics. The outcome is truly breathtaking, as the pool now serves as a mesmerizing reflective surface, beautifully complementing the surrounding sculptures. To further elevate the space, additional garden lighting, reduced planter box volumes, and new plantings were added, infusing the area with timeless charm and style.
