Perched high above street level, the home commands attention with its sculptural aesthetic, featuring extruded tiled forms on various planes that appear to float above the ground floor. Expressed as three striking angular forms the property’s upper-level offers sheltered views to the north, whilst also providing shade to the alfresco area on the lower level. Below it all lies the tennis court, a verdant oasis that softens the bold contemporary lines and contrasting black and white of the home’s exterior.

Inside this visionary residence, minimalist allure merges effortlessly with contemporary sophistication. A monochromatic palette envelops the home, reflecting the clients’ individuality and desire for a home that was anything but ‘beige’. On the lower level a stunning natural stone island bench serves as a perfect spot for impromptu wine tastings, while a custom-sized wine rack by Liberia Del Vino runs the length of the room, making a feature of the owner’s extensive wine collection. Inside, your eyes are automatically drawn to the adjacent tennis court, which provides a stunning backdrop for intimate gatherings. Upstairs in the opulent master-suite dark timber cabinetry has again been used in the luxurious dressing room creating cohesiveness in design. Large format Marquina porcelain wall tiles feature in the ensuite bathroom, exuding an air of timeless sophistication, and the centrepiece, a free-standing bath, invites you to immerse yourself in luxury and tranquillity. In the end, what emerges is not just a house but an exquisite testament to the power of collaboration between visionary clients and master craftsmen. This is a home that surpasses all expectations, a dwelling that encapsulates dreams and transforms them into reality.

Finished with custom-stained black timber veneer and granite benchtops, the dark and moody designer kitchen is able to maintain its sleek, streamlined aesthetic thanks to a scullery that is accessed via a reeded glass door.

LUXURY Transformation

A large Peppermint Grove property, nestled on a peaceful, leafy street with picturesque easterly views of the Swan River and Perth’s CBD, captured the attention of discerning buyers, however the existing dwelling was outdated and in dire need of attention. Luxury design and build firm MAEK were engaged to reimagine the home, resulting in this firstclass, contemporary family residence that sits in complete harmony with the home’s sought after location.

For MAEK, the objective was to preserve as much of the existing structure as possible whilst maximising the breathtaking views of the Swan River. This was achieved largely through removing and rebuilding the upper floor. The ground floor interiors also underwent a complete overhaul and re-imagining which was inspired by the client’s experiences living abroad and their desire to add some European elegance and sophistication to their new home. “The brief was fascinating”, says MAEK’s Creative Director, Kathryn Sims, “because the clients were fond of many European features, such as cozy nooks and intimate spaces, whereas Australian design typically revolves around openplan living.” Fortunately, the existing building presented numerous opportunities for smaller, intimate corners and nooks, which were not only utilised but fully embraced in the design. Kathryn adds, “We were able to work in harmony with the existing structure rather than against it.”

Along with the presence of these intimate spaces, the home radiates a sense of grandeur and spaciousness which is largely due to an inspired material selection and excellent spatial planning. Upon entering the home, visitors are greeted by a striking sculptural staircase, offering a fitting introduction to this stylish contemporary home – its graceful curves hinting at the level of detail and opulence that permeate the entire project.

This luxurious material selection features muted tones of natural stone and whitewashed timber and was heavily influenced by the clients’ desire for a home that feels like a “tranquil oasis”. In the formal dining area this is taken to another level with two expansive slabs of Patagonia Quartzite, adorned with captivating blush and black veining, framing a wine cellar finished in polished plaster – all finished to MAEK’s trademark firstclass build quality.

Working with a challenging Coolbinia site with difficult angles and a slope to the rear of the property, Graziani collaborated closely with John Murphy Architect and builder, Peter Bodeker Construction, to develop an inspired design which involved raising the pool to align with the home’s rear entertaining area. From the deck, the elevation creates an effect of extending the garden into the park, flowing on from the pool, which is raised above the ground at the far end. This has also allowed for minimised fencing and a custom-made porthole window which provides mesmerising views for swimmers out to the greenery and from the park into the sparkling blue water.
