Situated right on the riverfront in Perth’s premier suburb of Dalkeith, this home recently underwent a remarkable transformation thanks to the skilled team at Zorzi Builders who transformed what was a dated and tired Tuscan style property into this sophisticated and stylish residence. Positioned at the rear of another property on a battle-axe block, access was extremely difficult, requiring use of a crane to overhaul not just the entire façade and exterior but the nearly 900sqm of living space. Situated just 60m from the oceanfront in gorgeous South Fremantle, this apartment offered La Vie Interiors a fabulous blank canvas to create their client’s vision for a luxurious modern apartment with edgy urban appeal. Contemporary materials were carefully curated to achieve a sense of space, movement and generous tactility. Rectified glazed porcelain tiles in a warm grey, solid timber stair treads and sumptuous wool carpets were chosen for the flooring, setting the mood for the entire home and creating the perfect palette for the vertical surface materials. In keeping with the abundant land parcel, each side of the home’s elevations has a real connection to the land through spans of glass to connect the occupants as directly as possible with the surroundings.”

The striking front elevation extends almost 45 metres in width inclusive of the pool area and has an intentionally unobtrusive, low profile and extended flat concrete roof supported by angled twin Corten steel columns. Off form ceilings frame both tilt panel and timber board off form walls which have been stained to mimic a timber finish, while grounded by industrial finished concrete floors. Small amounts of polished plaster to selected feature walls offers a refined aesthetic with subtle textural differences delivering warmth and richness that raw concrete can sometimes lack. This multi award winning home’s numerous angled columns, matching angled concrete walls and windows continue to break new ground for this builder’s architectural achievements.

Australians all let us rejoice, For we are one and free, We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil, Our home is girt by sea… There are few children hearing the words for the first time who haven’t queried the fourth line in our national anthem– ‘Mum, what is girt by sea?’. The question answered, ‘Surrounded by the ocean darling’, the thought was then permanently dismissed from mind - despite a lifetime of recitals at school assemblies, sporting events and other official gatherings. Not so however for multi-award winning Perth photographer Tony Hewitt. Growing up on an Australian military base in Malaysia his creative, visual mind took over. He was not satisfied with a simple verbal response. But what does it ‘look’ like? It was a question that he pondered for decades, that is until he teamed up with colleague, Denis Glennon, a fellow photographer and adventurer, and embarked on the journey of a lifetime. I was first introduced to the extraordinary ‘Girt by Sea’ project by a client. We were sitting in his Osborne Park office, discussing creating a book that would showcase their history building some of Perth’s most luxurious homes when the ‘Girt by Sea’ book was placed in front of me. The point of this action was in reference to the book’s size, but when I opened the book I was immediately mesmerised by its contents - page after page of beautiful abstract works of art. What is this book I asked? Where did it come from? As an art lover I was surprised I knew nothing of it. When it was clear what I was looking at I was completely and utterly dumbstruck. These are photos? Of Australia? When I left the meeting I immediately called Denis, I was in awe and wanted to meet the people behind this incredible project.

A Cesana 210 light plane was customised for the expedition with special windows and wind shields and two pilots engaged - Roger Avery, with extensive commercial flying experience, and Steve Kruger, a former air force test pilot. For safety reasons, the pilots needed to swap every four days throughout the 31-day journey covering over 34,000 kilometres, with one flying and the other playing catch up either by commercial plane or road. The preparation was impressively accurate - despite the opportunity for so many things to go awry, amazingly the entire trip came in within a single hour of the predicted time! Naturally, before such an expedition could take flight, there was the notso-small matter of how to cover the substantial costs involved. Thanks to a previous relationship, Denis was able to convince Australia’s largest camera house, Canon to sponsor their venture, on condition that Tony and Denis use standard Canon consumer-level cameras rather than professional equipment for all the photography. Knowing the spectacular imagery that was captured was done so on consumer equipment makes the outcome all the more extraordinary.

Captivating in every sense of the word, the spectacular imagery showcases the diverse beauty of our island home in mesmerising abstract shapes and textures, and colours that range from earthy greens and browns to soft pastels through to extraordinarily bold reds and vibrant aqua seas. A truly wondrous outcome from a daring adventure that all commenced with a boy who dared to wonder.
THE FUTURE Two years on the project is still going strong, with both the books and the stunning art prints continuing to sell from the project’s website and future exhibitions planned for Melbourne and Brisbane. The project is also proudly giving back to the community. The day before we met to discuss their adventure the couple had proudly been involved in a ceremony at the new Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth where a selection of Girt by Sea prints now add some serenity and beauty to the ICU ward - gifted on behalf of the Ciara Glennon Foundation which was sent up in honour of Denis’ daughter who was tragically murdered in the 1990’s . The client’s brief was centred around family living, desiring a home that was contemporary yet timeless, and whilst being expansive and luxurious, still felt like a home. A carefully chosen material palette, that includes extensive use of stone and timber in various forms, adds an organic element throughout this impressive residence creating a sense of warmth and homeliness to the airy open spaces. Another recent TDL project is the celebrated architectural Vodka Palace. This project too is an exercise in balance. A desirable designer hybrid, the Vodka Palace itself is both brutal and tranquil. To meet the home, the landscape features a hardy, naturalistic planting combined with material selections either recycled or chosen to develop a patina, softening the sharp angles and heavy structures of the home. The space can be adapted to be both cavernous and airy, allowing opportunities to open up the interiors and draw in the naturalistic landscape, making the space into a cohesive native escape.

This final TDL landscape is a case study in optimising a small space. Working to bridge levels in the architecture and the sloping site, the garden’s asymmetric floating stairs, warm textural planting, and focal point water feature create high impact and a sense of arrival. The design cleverly utilises still water to mirror a large frangipani, extending the space. Dense planting selections of mixed heights fill out the garden, packing a green punch in a small area and separating the landscape from the street beyond. DOGS
David Bromley is probably one of Australia’s most well-known and well loved artists. Since he first emerged in the mid 80’s he’s continued to gather a huge fan base thanks to his distinctive pop-art kind of style, vibrant use of colour, and general awesomeness. Now, David has given us yet another reason to love him, generously donating several paintings to Australian charity Mission Paws’ible to help fundraise to expand their strained Bali operations where tourism restrictions have seen a massive increase in abandoned, neglected, abused and starving dogs. Inspired by his Bull Mastiff Keith, named after Keith Richards, and a coworker’s recent family addition Django, a rescue with hearing problems, Bromley & Co generously donated five original paintings by David that feature dogs saved by Mission Paws’ible, honoring their remarkable journeys and the wonderful work that Mission Paws’ible are doing. Bromley’s generous donation is his way of giving back to the lovable creatures he says “have got me through some very tough, lonely times”. Several of the original paintings were raffled in 2021. With a further raffle planned for 2022 to raise much needed funds.
