Dear Valued Partner,

As we step into 2025, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the meaningful work we accomplished together throughout our 43rd year in business. In 2024, we focused on building deeper connections with our communities, enhancing well-being, and preparing our organization for the transformative wave of industry innovation, including AI and adaptive design technologies.

Since 1981, we’ve been guided by the core belief that great communities are built in great spaces. This principle has driven us to deliver exceptional environments that inspire people and organizations to thrive. In 2024, we were honored to be named a Steelcase Platinum Partner for the sixth consecutive year, a recognition of our commitment to excellence and the communities we serve.

Our work this year emphasized creating spaces that promote wellbeing by supporting the physical, emotional, and cognitive health of the people who experience the spaces we deliver every day. We leveraged industry-leading design and emerging technologies to enhance the way we deliver smarter, more adaptable environments.

Equally important is our always present dedication to community. We expanded efforts in education, hospitality, and healthcare environments, affirming our belief that thriving communities are at the heart of meaningful work. Additionally, we strengthened our focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. By learning and evolving within our own culture, we have become stronger partners for each of you and your organizations, bringing forward the best of what we’ve learned.

As we look ahead to 2025, we are ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities. Technology and innovation will continue to shape the future of the workplace, and we are eager to deliver even more inspiring solutions. Together, we will build on our momentum and create spaces that empower the next generation.

Thank you for being an integral part of our journey. We look forward to serving you and your organization in 2025.

With warmest regards,

The Communities We Transform

In 1981, Custer was founded on a bold idea: that well-designed spaces do more than improve how people work—they shape how communities connect, collaborate, and thrive. Grand Rapids became the foundation of this vision, and from the start, our mission was clear: to deliver more than just furniture. We aimed to transform how organizations operate and how communities flourish.

As our reputation for innovation and impeccable customer service grew, so did our reach. In 1998, we extended our expertise beyond Grand Rapids to serve the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo regions. By 2013, we had established a presence in Traverse City and the Upper Peninsula, bringing our passion for transformation to Northern Michigan. In 2018, we crossed state lines, proudly expanding into Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Over the past four decades, our services have grown to include comprehensive interior design, furniture, flooring, installation, and project management solutions. While the scope of our work has evolved, our belief remains steadfast: great spaces unlock potential and create lasting possibilities—for individuals, organizations, and communities alike.

The map to the right highlights the density of businesses and organizations we had the privilege of partnering with in 2024. Each point represents a story of collaboration and transformation, demonstrating the reach and impact of our work across the regions we serve.

Well-designed spaces can transform an organization, but great spaces can transform a community.

This year’s edition of Year in Review dives deeper into the stories behind these projects, showcasing how the spaces we designed continue to enrich the communities we are proud to call partners.

Custer played a pivotal role in the transformation of Parkview Kosciusko from an outpatient-level hospital to a comprehensive inpatient facility.

Originally established as an 86,000-square-foot outpatient center in 2016, the hospital has now expanded to 174,000 square feet, complete with a dedicated Oncology department. This transformation not only enhances the hospital's capacity but also introduces newly designed care spaces to meet the increasing demand for comprehensive healthcare services.

The expansion is not just about physical growth; it represents Parkview's growing relationship with the community and its commitment to becoming a leading healthcare provider.

A key feature of this expansion is the outdoor courtyard that bridges the old and new sections of the hospital. This space not only offers a beautiful setting for oncology patients receiving treatment but also facilitates the addition of new patient rooms, thanks to the extra windows that allow natural light to flood in. The hospital's commitment to creating a healing environment is evident in every aspect of the expansion, from the architecture to the services offered.

With the ability to provide both inpatient and outpatient services, Parkview Kosciusko Hospital will be equipped to address most medical needs.

By collaborating with a diverse range of product partners, including Coalesse, Steelcase, and Kwalu, Custer guaranteed that the space was equipped with the best furniture solutions specifically designed to meet the needs of both patients and staff.

Transformed spaces for better care

The recent expansion at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center marks a notable achievement for the Kalkaska community.

The new two-story 14,000 square foot Acute Care Pavilion, enhances the hospital's capacity to provide critical services.

This expansion includes emergency and inpatient services, featuring patient care rooms, isolation treatment rooms, and behavioral health rooms. The design prioritizes improved safety for both patients and staff, ensuring a secure and efficient environment for healthcare delivery.

Before Custer's involvement, Kalkaska County faced a pressing challenge: the healthcare needs of the community were outpacing the existing hospital space. The growing demand for health services required a strategic solution to manage this expansion effectively.

Custer stepped in to address these needs by providing a comprehensive solution that included Steelcase task chairs, panels to create state of the art nursing stations on both floors, as well as waiting room and exam room furniture. These additions not only enhanced the functionality of the space but also contributed to a more comfortable and efficient environment for both patients and healthcare providers.

This redesign goes beyond a simple infrastructure upgrade; it is a valuable contribution to the community. The hospital has transformed into a warm and inviting space for community members around the clock. The addition of height-adjustable desks and ergonomic seating underscores the hospital's dedication to offering a flexible and accommodating environment.

The intentional design and carefully chosen furnishings ensure that the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center is well-equipped to address the community's changing healthcare needs for the future.

The lobby of Calvin University's Prince Conference Center has recently undergone a significant transformation, breathing new life into a space that was overdue for an update.

As the heart of the hotel and conference center, the lobby is a lively space where guests and students alike congregate. There was only one issue: The space was outdated which contributed to an unwelcoming atmosphere. The goal was to revamp the space to reflect a more refined and inviting hospitality environment.

To achieve this transformation, the old carpeting was replaced with a lighter-colored option. This change helped to brighten up the space, while still incorporating hints of burgundy to honor the school's colors. The outdated wallcoverings were removed and replaced with a vibrant, new design from Momentum Wallcovering, which introduced a sense of elegance and a modern touch to the space. The design team focused on creating a space that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional for guests.

Grace Health’s newly updated facility goes beyond a simple refresh; it’s about creating a space that caters to the evolving needs of its healthcare professionals and their patients.

A key feature of this update is the introduction of height-adjustable workstations, which enhance ergonomic health by allowing staff to alternate between sitting and standing. This flexibility is essential in healthcare.

Additionally, space planning was important as Custer's team set up private areas for telemedicine calls, understanding the growing need for virtual consultations. These spaces ensure privacy and confidentiality, helping healthcare providers connect with patients remotely without sacrificing the quality of care.

Custer’s involvement in Grace Health’s facility update in Battle Creek showcases the impact of thoughtful design and strategic planning. Skytron recently teamed up with Custer to transform and reimagine their corporate headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The renovation was driven by a pressing need to accommodate new hires and modernize an office that had remained unchanged for nearly two decades. Recognizing the importance of attracting and retaining talent, Skytron sought to create a dynamic environment that would encourage employees to spend more time in the office.

To achieve this, they partnered with Custer to develop a hybrid workspace where most private offices and workstations would be free address, allowing for greater flexibility and adaptability. Several small to medium-sized conference rooms were strategically placed throughout the office, enhancing the functionality of the space.

Collaborative design for student living

Indiana Tech Troder Hall | Fort Wayne, IN

Custer partnered with Indiana Tech to thoughtfully design their new residential hall in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In late 2023, Custer collaborated with Indiana Tech to furnish and design the university’s newest residential hall, Troder Hall. While we had specific guidelines for the main floor’s furniture and layout, we enjoyed the creative liberty to design the smaller areas on the other floors.

Our initial concepts and renderings were well-received by the Indiana Tech team, as they effectively maximized the use of smaller spaces on the east and west sides of each floor. These designs created flexible and functional areas for study, collaboration, and socializing, ensuring that every level of the residential hall was both practical and inviting.

To maintain a cohesive look while aiding wayfinding, we used the same products on each floor but varied the color themes. This made it easy for students to identify their floor as soon as they exited the elevator.

We extended these color themes into the individual dorm rooms, particularly with the student chairs, ensuring a consistent and vibrant aesthetic throughout Troder Hall.

This project highlights our ability to blend functionality with design, creating spaces that are both practical and visually appealing.

Luxury flooring and scenic views

Railside Golf Club | Byron Center, MI
Photos

Railside Golf Club undertook an extensive interior redesign. Custer was thrilled to have provided all the commercial flooring throughout the new space.

After nearly a year and over $1 million in renovations, Railside Golf Club proudly opened a new restaurant within their facilities, Alder & Iron. The dining room and bar area have been fully updated, and a new 1,400-square-foot patio has been added. The restaurant offers stunning views of the golf course.

Custer offered a variety of flooring solutions, including luxury vinyl tile (LVT), carpeting, and ceramic tile, to enhance the different areas of the club.

Our work included carpet tiles in various sections, custom plaid carpet in the dining room, wood-look ceramic tile in the main areas, and tile flooring in the men’s restrooms, ladies’ restroom vanity, bar splash, and bar face.

We also installed a small portion of LVT in select areas. We put in a lot of preparation to ensure everything was perfect.

The final outcome is a beautifully renovated space that elevates the overall experience for club members and visitors, whether they are dining at Alder & Iron, hitting the course for a quick round of golf, or taking in the scenic views from the new patio.

Innovative design for enhanced collaboration

CSE Morse | Battle Creek, MI

In the summer of 2024, CSE Morse, a renowned custom fabricator and mechanical contractor with over a century of service across various industries, decided it was time for a move.

Before reaching out to Custer, CSE Morse faced challenges with their existing office space. They were rapidly outgrowing their current facilities, which were outdated and lacked the necessary infrastructure to support effective collaboration. Recognizing these issues, Custer worked closely with Driven Design Studio to design a layout that would accommodate CSE Morse's expanding team and foster a more collaborative work environment. The solution involved moving to a new building with ample meeting spaces, allowing for greater flexibility and interaction among team members.

To meet CSE Morse's needs, Custer designed conference rooms that support different postures, making meetings more dynamic. They also introduced customized drafting tables to boost workspace functionality and elevate the design vision for CSE Morse's new office space. Essential products, such as height-adjustable desks and drafting tables, provide ergonomic advantages and flexibility. Every decision was well thought out and implemented to bring maximum comfort and efficiency to the new office environment.

Innovative redesign and reuse approach

Northwestern Mutual | Grand Rapids, MI

Project Partners:

CS Erickson | Ghafari | Orion Construction

Product Partners:

Steelcase, Blu Dot, Coalesse, and Halcon

Custer had the opportunity to revamp the workspaces for four groups under the Northwestern Mutual umbrella.

These groups, all previously situated in the Campau Square Building in downtown Grand Rapids, were spread across a single floor and faced a common challenge: their lease was expiring, and the furniture was old-fashioned and inefficient. Many of the workstations were overly large, occupying precious space without offering much utility. This situation prompted their relocation to the Bridgewater Building in downtown Grand Rapids.

The move to a new building offered a fresh start with more space, but it came with its own set of challenges. The previous tenants had left behind all their old furniture. Our task was to reuse what we could while fitting more people into the new space. This required a strategic approach to redesigning the workstations and overall office layout.

We began by minimizing the footprint of workstations and lowering the panel heights to create a more open and collaborative environment. Every employee was provided with a height-adjustable desk, ensuring ergonomic comfort and flexibility. Access to natural light was a priority, so we positioned workstations to maximize exposure to sunlight.

To cater to the need for focused work and private conversations, we implemented numerous phone rooms and phone booths. These spaces were designed to facilitate heads-down work, phone calls, and virtual collaborative meetings without distractions. Snapcab phone booths were strategically spread out across the office, providing quiet spaces for employees to go to.

Conference rooms were another essential element of the new design. We included several of them, each equipped with the latest technology to support seamless meetings and collaborations.

Custer’s approach to redesigning the workspace for Northwestern Mutual and its partners resulted in a modern, functional, and innovative office design. By reusing existing furniture where possible and incorporating new ergonomic solutions, we created a space that effectively met the needs of Northwestern Mutual and its employees.

To address this, Custer provided a wide range of solutions, including classroom furniture designed for both students and staff. Featured products such as Smith Systems Flavors chairs, Fleetwood unitized welded frame student tables, and Smith Systems Cascade Teachers desks were integral to the design. Additionally, Jonti-Craft Imaginative Play elements were incorporated to foster creativity and engagement among young learners.

The collaboration led to a well-designed space that meets the educational needs of students and teachers, while also showcasing Kentwood Public Schools' commitment to fostering a vibrant and inspiring space for early childhood education.

Custer was excited to contribute commercial flooring and ceramic tile to the new Sligh Apartments community in Zeeland, Michigan.

The former Sligh Furniture Co. manufacturing plant located in the heart of Zeeland, Michigan underwent a major transformation as it was redeveloped into a new luxury apartment community.

We successfully installed over 39,000 square feet of luxury vinyl tile across the 50 resident rooms, ensuring a high-end finish throughout the living spaces.

In addition, we laid down 8,064 square feet of ceramic tile in all the resident bathrooms, covering both the floors and walls, including elegant shower backsplashes. We fitted 1,038 yards of carpet along all the hallways and stairwells, providing a comfortable and cohesive look.

To complete the project, we installed 2,745 square feet of vinyl composition tile in all the storage and utility rooms, ensuring durability and functionality in these essential areas.

We are so excited for the future residents of this new apartment community. The attention to detail throughout the project ensures that residents will enjoy a comfortable and elegant environment.

We can’t wait to see this vibrant community come to life and provide a wonderful place for people to call home.
