An Introduction to Season 5
“I have the privilege of having a platform, I have to use it to make the world gentler and kinder. I have two little girls, and I want to look them in the eye and say I fought tooth and nail with my camera and my voice to allow them to inherit a better world.” – Misan Harriman (who will be with us in-person on Oct 4th)
Within these pages you’ll find listings for a huge variety of film and events. From Christmas favourites to opera and comedy, the diversity of our offering remains a constant. But within that steady constance, we see growth as humans and as an arts venue as intrinsic to our journey.
Society is never stagnant, we create, we make mistakes, we learn. So, what is the role of an artist or arts venue in an ever-changing landscape, where does responsibility lie? These questions form part of a series that run throughout this season. Riefenstahl, Misan Harriman, Powerstation, Finding Fela, Ackroyd & Harvey, The Salt of The Earth, YARA & DAVINA all form part of a thread examining how the arts help shape society, uplift the voiceless, build empathy and create change. And in the case of Riefenstahl, what do we feel about the arts being used as a propaganda tool of the darkest kind when we look back through an historical lense?
“Art is not a luxury. The artist explains to us or at least asks the questions which must be asked. And when there’s a question asked, there’s an answer somewhere. I don’t believe a question can be asked which doesn’t have an answer somewhere in the universe. That’s what the artist is supposed to do, to liberate us from our ignorance.” – Maya Angelou in conversation with Bell Hooks.
In an age of artificial intelligence, let’s delve in to artistic intelligence; routed in shared humanity, sharing stories and conversation that enable us to listen with open hearts. I’m particularly looking forward to holding space together, examining how changemakers create the most beautiful waves in the arts that can ripple through society. As well as letting loose at our most immersive event yet, The Cornetto Trilogy, because staying playful is important too. I hope you’ll join us.

Balmoral + Heritage Open Days Tour + Intro
This is a free event for Heritage Open Days, starting with behind-the-scenes tour. As historic ships vanish from British waters, a group of passionate volunteers fights to save the Balmoral. A 1949 passenger vessel moored in Bristol’s iconic harbour, battling time, bureaucracy, and financial struggles to preserve a piece of maritime history before it’s lost. A community working for the greater good.

Thu 13 Nov 7pm 12
What can be acheived when a community is empowered to take action? Two artists in Walthamstow set out to take their street off-grid, kickstarting a solar-powered energy revolution. Funny and heartwarming, Powell and Edelstyn’s film is a testament to how a creative approach can galvanise a community and be a catalyst for change.

In Conversation with Misan Harriman + Andy Mundy-Castle + screening of Shoot The People
Sat 04 Oct 7pm TBC
Photographer, social activist and Oscar Nominated filmmaker Misan Harriman is one of the most widely-shared visual storytellers and cultural commentators of this age. Chair of The Southbank Centre and the first black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover, he is well-known for his portraiture of royalty and stars: but it is his reportage photography of social activists, the innate empathy he holds and giving of voice to the marginalised that is catapaulting him faster and further into a different kind of stardom. BAFTA winning Andy Mundy-Castle will be joining Misan for a live, in-person conversation following a screening of his new documentary that follows Misan, examining how protest and organised movements can lead to social change. A highlight of the season, this is likely to sell out, so book quickly.

COLOUR & LIGHT

Riefenstahl
Where does responsibility fall in the role of an artist? Looking back at the life and work of the Nazi’s foremost film and photography propagandist, Leni Riefenstahl, via a historical lense draws forward fascinating conversations regarding the arts and artists. Riefenstahl is considered one of the most controversial women of the 20th century in the arts. Using
documents from Riefenstahl’s estate, including private films, photos, recordings and letters the film uncovers uncomfortable truths and places them in an extended historical context. As the Reich’s pre-eminent filmmaker how did she keep denying any closer ties to Hitler and Goebbels and what does that mean for artists today?
Ackroyd & Harvey: The Art of Activism+ Q&A
When does practice become protest? Or protest poetry? An intimate portrait of internationally acclaimed artists, Heather Ackroyd & Dan Harvey, who work at the intersection of art,
activism, ecology, and action on climate catastrophe - whatever the personal cost.
We will be joined by filmmaker Fiona Cunningham-Reid for a Q&A.

Caravaggio’s masterpieces are some of art’s most instantly recognisable. This is the most extensive film ever made about one of the greatest artists of all time. Featuring testimony from the artist himself on the eve of his mysterious disappearance, this beautiful new film reveals Caravaggio as never before.
The Salt of The Earth
Sebastiaão Salgado was one of the world’s greatest documentary photographers. His work is instantly recognisable by its vast scale and striking intensity. He spent over half a century exposing both the most brutal and beautiful landscapes of the human and natural world. The Salt of The Earth studies the man and his work, directed by Wim Wenders and Salgado’s son Juliano. Witness his images on the biggest screen.
YARA + DAVINA
YARA’S Pub Quiz 6-7pm
“Witty and perterbing” - The Guardian
Join artist Yara El-Sherbini as she hosts one of her playful pub quizes in our Oak Room Bar. This is no ordinary pub quiz; expect questions ranging from global politica to flavours of crisps by the way of squirrels and espionage! This work was originally commisioned by the Arnolfini, for Breathing Space.
Yara uses the accesible format of a pub quiz to create radical spaces for both difficult and humorous conversations about the world. Tickets for this part of the evening are limited due to the capacity of the space.

YARA + DAVINA In Conversation 7:30pm
Unfailingly inventive, YARA + DAVINA use formats within popular culture to make works which are accessible and playful; believing art can and should create social change through the act of social practice. Their work has been exhibited and commisioned by Tate Modern and Britain, Venice Biennale, National Portrait Gallery, IKON, Somerset House, Arnolfini and more.
The duo will be discussing their social practice, how they shift around the role and value of art, who art is for and what it can be.

Amadeus + LIVE music
The opulent, mad-cap, origin story of the talent that was Mozart is back on the big screen in a 4k restoration, ready to be seen in the style it deserves. A sumptous period drama unlike any other; there is no staid behaviour to be had here, this is the tale of a rock ‘n’ roll classical musician.
Amadeus is a feast for the senses, and one which needs no apetite for classical music. Winner of 8 Oscars, if you haven’t seen it, you must, and on a big screen.
“Amadeus weaves a beautiful, tragic fable, enchanting to children and adults alike. It has gore, a pact with God, celebrity,

Minima + The Lodger
Minima, one of the leading bands accompanying silent film in Europe are back. Their live scores are other-wordly, incredibly skilled and not-to-be-missed.
The Lodger is set in a foggy and unsettled London with a Jack the Ripper type serial killer on the loose, and was Hitchcock’s first major commercial and critical success.
a masked stranger, murder and some of the best music ever written. What other film offers half as much?” - The Guardian If you want to dress up then I admire your enthusiasm and far be it from me to stifle your flair, but arrive early for the live music. Fri 12 Sep 7pm PG Sun 19 Oct 7pm PG
