Curnow’s Hayle is a community publication, packed with information pertaining to the town, ensuring that every resident knows just what is available right on the doorstep from the plethora of quality business and services that have chosen - like you - to make Hayle their home and are the lifeblood of the town.

The challenging times that continue to rock our world bring our sense of community to the fore - it has never been more important to support the ever evolving plethora of brilliant talent that continue to surprise and delight, bringing valuable employment and innovation to our wonderful town. Curnow’s Hayle provides a platform to help the vital, local population recognise and utilise these jewels, coupled with a smorgasbord of local information, news and views.

So, why Curnow’s Hayle? My husband would joke I married only to gain his surname. Working on Cornish publications for over twenty five years it has certainly made for some interesting conversations! Coupled with a passion for my home town, where I am so lucky to have been born, brought up and remain resident, this dedication to my late husband, Steve, really does make Curnow’s Hayle the perfect choice.

It is not possible to create something new without the help and support of others and firstly I thank those that have chosen to place their trust in me and advertise! ere at Cornwall’s National Animal Welfare Trust, based in Hayle, we offer an animal rescue service as well as temporary boarding facilities, paddock hire and provide people with the opportunity to give a special pet their forever home through our adoption service. The team at our Hayle centre aims to continue the legacy of the late Molly Wyatt, who started this important work and whose name is well known within the animal rescue world in Cornwall.

We want to shine a spotlight on a beautiful boy called Bungle, a two-year-old spaniel crossbreed who is looking for his forever home.

Bungle came to NAWT Cornwall Rescue Centre as a stray, which means we don’t know a lot about his past. We found him with a foreign microchip which means Bungle didn’t start his life in the UK. A sweet and loving boy - with super high energy levels - Bungle is looking for experienced owners to give him a home in a nice, quiet area with no other animals, no matter how big or small. As Bungle has lived on the streets he is starting from scratch with his basic training, but our team here at NAWT Cornwall Rescue Centre are working hard to get Bungle ready for his new life.

The Hayle harbour and the estuary supports a number of habitats and species of local and national importance, writes Peter Haddock, Hayle Harbour Master.

I

n particular it is renowned for its bird populations with more than 18,000 birds recorded in cold winters, meaning much of the estuary is notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). To honour this, a significant area was bought by the RSPB in 1992 and has acted as an important bird reserve since.

In addition, the estuary is surrounded by dynamic beaches and sand dunes which are also Sites of Special Scientific Interest, meaning both the harbour authority here in Hayle and RSPB have responsibilities under the Wildlife and Countryside Act for the conservation of the estuary.

Hayle is a privately owned harbour and, managed by my Deputy and I, we are responsible for its tidal waters, harbour premises, the enforcement of the harbour bylaws which are informed by the Hayle Harbour Act 1989 and also national legislation.

On the estuary itself, there are many recreational user groups with the harbour supporting more than 137

boats, a number of which are commercial operators such as fishermen and coastal tours. We are looking forward to seeing additional pontoons installed in the near future to accommodate both the leisure and commercial vessels that are currently on the mooring waiting list.

The use of the estuary by residents and visitors alike is extremely popular and numbers will undoubtedly continue to increase as the harbour and its lands are developed by its owners. Without a coordinated approach to leisure use of the estuary, there is a possibility of conflict arising between different user groups and the natural and historic environment may also suffer. However, co-operation between the various stakeholder groups is helping to create a workable relationship between conservation, tourism and leisure activities contributing to a viable future for Hayle and its harbour.

Ha yle Su rf Life Savin g Clu b 60 years of Buoyancy Aid!

T

his year Hayle Surf Life Saving Club celebrates 60 fantastic years of saving lives.

The club first came into formation in response to sea fatalities that occurred at Gwithian and the Estuary in November 1960. After an initial meeting between those wanting to establish a surf life saving club, the Hayle Surf Life Saving Club was formed in the spring of 1961.

The club’s aims and values remain much the same now as in 1961 - to ‘provide and maintain modern surf life saving equipment for use on Hayle beach by teams of volunteers trained in rescue, artificial respiration and first aid’, while keeping an eye on local beach conditions and warning beach-goers of danger. The club also works to encourage and promote the formation of other surf life saving clubs in Cornwall.

In relatively recent years the club outgrew their original premises and with assistance from local organisations - managed to raise almost half a million pounds to secure its future and build a brand new clubhouse right by the beach and estuary. The impressive,

two-storey clubhouse is fully kitted out, boasting a large gear store, toilets and changing rooms, a lobby, first aid room and disabled lift, as well as a training and meeting room, balcony and office on the first floor. A fantastic achievement for all involved!

Since inception, Hayle Surf Lifesaving Club has become rooted firmly within the community, looking out for Hayle’s beach-goers, saving lives and training the next generation of life-savers and first-aiders, something that is so important in a coastal community. As well as this, the club is proud of the water sports events that have become such a prevalent part of a surf life saving club - from open water and still water events, to surf races and sprinting races, all helping to keep the teams fit and ready for action.

Hayle Surf Life Saving Club was established to educate and save lives.

It is clear they are every bit as important and appreciated by the Hayle community today as 60 years ago.

Coun cil update s!

The latest news from Hayle Town Council Town and Parish Council Elections The local Town Council Elections took place on 6 May 2021. Unfortunately, insufficient candidates stood to force an election in both the new wards and the council now has seven vacancies. We are working on a strategy to try to attract and recruit new people to ensure the council represents all its community.

New Mayor and Deputy Mayor During the Annual Council meeting on Thursday 20 May 2021 Councillor Steve Benney was successfully confirmed as Hayle Town Mayor and Councillor Anne-Marie Rance as Hayle Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming year.

Temporary Meeting Arrangements In line with recent legislation, town council meetings can no longer be held online or remotely and councillors, officers, guest speakers and members of the public, when possible, are expected to attend a physical meeting. Temporarily meetings will be taking place at Hayle Day Care Centre and numbers will be limited, so please book a seat prior to the meeting if you wish to attend. All attendees will be asked to wear masks, respect social distancing, bring their own pens, notepads, laptops etc. Refreshments will not be available.

All details will be included on the agenda for all meetings which are generally published at five or six days ahead of a meeting on the town council website, Facebook pages and the parish noticeboards.

Hayle Open Air Swimming Pool The Swimming Pool opened again on 19 June 2021, and weather and Covid -19 permitting will remain open until Sunday 26 September 2021. The pool will operate on a similar basis as last year. Tickets can be booked online on the town council website and, if there is space, available tickets can be paid for by card (no cash) at the gate at the start of each session. There will be three sessions per day and numbers will be limited, at least initially, in line with government

guidelines. We ask that swimmers come swim ready as initially the changing room and showers will not be available. There will be no season tickets or residents tickets this year. To mitigate, tickets are priced at £3, as last year.

Keep an eye on the pool’s Facebook page and the town council website for updates.

New CCTV Camera for Penpol Avenue An additional CCTV camera has recently been installed in Penpol Avenue to directly address some of the ongoing anti-social behaviour that occurs in Ellis Park It is linked to town’s CCTV network, records 24 hours a day and is proactively monitored by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service during core and peak periods.

The town council has proactively worked with Cornwall Council, who own and manage the park, and the local Neighbourhood Police Team to try to reduce the instances of the behaviour and vandalism in this area.

Tour of Britain The Tour of Britain will be passing through Hayle on Sunday 5 September 2021, although there will be other races and events around this date.

The council’s small maintenance team and Hayle in Bloom, all volunteers, are busy trying to make the town look as appealing as possible which will undoubtedly be of benefit to and enjoyed by residents, visitors and local businesses alike.

15 Local resident pens second poetry book to

help raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care

F

ollowing the success of Reflections, his first anthology of poems, Keith Parker has produced a second book called Sunsets. Illustrated by Banbury artist Gail Parsons, the new book continues to follow the theme of poetry written during bereavement after Keith’s wife Sue died at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle in November 2019.

“I keep Sue’s love and memory alive through poetry and illustration” says Keith. “I’m not a natural poet by any stretch of the imagination, but I hope readers may find comfort and inspiration through difficult times.” He and Sue met in December 2000 and it was the beginning of a very close relationship, but bereavement came just before Covid-19 struck and Keith was left to face his darkest moments alone as lock down was enforced. “Writing the books of poetry has helped as I’ve reflected on our memories and the special moments we shared. Bereavement isn’t easy and is unique to everyone, but I hope readers can find words that will help them.”

Keith started work on the 35-page book with its 16 poems and 15 illustrations on the 8th of January this year and published it on the 12th of April. “People have emailed me to say how much my poetry has helped them and it’s these comments that make it all so worthwhile. Sales have been good and I feel the two books complement each other.”

Sales of Sunsets will benefit Cornwall Hospice Care, Cancer Research UK, The Cove at Treliske and Katherine House Hospice in Adderbury. The book is on sale for £4.99 and can been purchased along with Reflections, in Cornwall Hospice Care shops in Hayle, Penzance, Falmouth, Truro, Perranporth, Looe and Liskeard.

A World Powerhouse - by Trevor Smitheram

here to begin with the story of our great town? Hayle, situated on the North Coast, derives it’s name from the Celtic word for Estuary. There is historical evidence of ships sailing as far as Porth Columb - further up the St Erth River - with travellers disembarking overland close to St Michaels Mount and on to Europe.

A recognised trade route dating back many years. Certainly an important discovery was made around 1843 at The Plantation, known as Carnsew Fort (opposite Jewson’s) when workmen digging a road for local businessman Henry Harvey discovered a granite slab, engraved with an inscription believed to indicate that this was the grave of Cunadie who “fell asleep” and was buried here during the 5th century.

Our main focus is the huge part Hayle played in the industrial revolution.

Formerly Hayle was two towns - Foundry and Copperhouse. The Cornish Copper Company came to Copperhouse in 1756 from Camborne, smelting copper from local mines, using twenty six furnaces for the process. Local black blocks, common particularly on the King George V Memorial Walk were produced here from about 1765. Even in those times recycling was to the fore, as many houses in Copperhouse were built using these “scoria” blocks. Those working for the firm were given the blocks free of charge to build their homes - but the church had to pay for them!

The channel now adjacent to Home Bargains, was fabricated from scoria blocks in 1769, enabling ships to dock and unload.

The Copper Company closed in 1819, continuing the name and smelting iron until closing altogether in 1867, with most of the works purchased by Harveys of Hayle, based at Foundry. continued on page 18

Harveys came to Foundry in 1779 from Carnhell, ceasing trading in 1904. The most famous connection for Harveys of Hayle was the fabrication of the chain links for the Clifton Suspension Bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

They famously built a total of 79 ships at South Quay (now home to ASDA) and cast all the parts for the first high pressure road carriage our very first car! This was designed by Richard Trevithick, making its maiden run December 4th 1801.

The largest cylinder ever to be made in the world at 144 inches in diameter and weighing a mighty 25 tonnes was successfully cast by Harveys of Hayle. There is more of this to come in future issues of Curnow’s Hayle!

Hayle has been home to many other industries.

J & F Pool based at Copperhouse from 1848 until 1998 The Electric Works on North Quay, built in 1910, producing electricity in 1911 and closing in 1976. It’s famous twin chimneys were demolished in 1981.

The Associated Ethyl Company, later Associated Octel, was also situated on North Quay from 1938 to 1973. Originally producing an element from warm sea water used by British Second World War planes as an anti knock device. The Esso Petroleum Company was also homed on North Quay from the 1920’s until late 1970.

Elsewhere in Hayle was the Ellis Brewery, delivering beer to over 50 establishments and building The Cornubia Hotel in 1866.

The Dynamite Works, situated at Upton Towans, operated from 1888 to 1920,producing cordite for use in World War One, together with other explosives.

The first Hayle railway was situated on what is now the Isis Gardens at Foundry (under the viaduct) built in 1837 and travelling all the way to Tresavean, near Lanner.

The first railway bridge in Hayle was designed by I K Brunel with the present bridge constructed in 1888.

So, Hayle - a world powerhouse in its time. A truly historic town!

He is a chatty bird so listen out for him the next time you visit. His favourite phrases are ‘What are you doing?’, and ‘I’m a good boy!’ as well as ‘Hello Henry’ and lots of laughing and whistles. You may see him raise the colourful feathers on his nape to form a fearsome looking fan, to make himself appear bigger!”

elcome to Kinsei Refill, Hayle’s very own refill store helping you to be more sustainable and removing single use plastic from your shopping experience.

Kinsei Refill is situated in The Old Foundry Chapel, Hayle, and sells a range of foods from flour, sugar and baking goods such as dried fruit and nuts, to rice, pasta, lentils and cereals. We also have a large variety of herbs and spices, loose leaf teas and a great selection of snacks including a vegan sweet range and a number of yoghurt and chocolate coated fruit and nuts.

And if you’re worried about buying all those plastic bottles of laundry detergents and liquids every few weeks, we also sell refill toiletries and cleaning products, as well as food items.

Our shop is free from single use plastic - in fact the shop has a plastic free award! Our aim is to sell environmentally friendly and ethical products and we try to source products locally if possible.

One of our services we feature in-store is the milk delivery service, which is available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. It is a free service with a low minimum weekly order amount of just £5 per week, and we currently offer this service in the Hayle area, including Connor Downs and St Erth. In the coming months we are expanding the area on Tuesdays and Saturdays to the St Ives area, which will also include Lelant, Carbis Bay and Halsetown.

The service provided is generally a milk delivery service but as we are a refill store, we also will refill or deliver any goods from the shop and actively encourage our customers to keep adding and trying different products.

If you want to make a difference, swapping just one single use piece of plastic for a refill option will have a bigger impact than you realise. Visit our shop to find out more or sign up to our milk delivery service and help future generations enjoy an environment with less plastic in it.

The Old Foundry Chapel in Hayle houses a mix of the modern, vintage, artisan and specialist shops, a refill shop and even a beauticians. A real hub of creativity and a shopping community of like minded small businesses who have a passion for offering locals and visitors a unique shopping experience and a wide choice of everyday products and gifts for special occasions.

The Chapel was bought in 2015 by its current owner and was renamed The Old Foundry Chapel, a nod to its ecclesiastical past. The building was previously used in the town as a Methodist church and schoolroom. In the 1970s it was known as Pratts Market, named after the owner and was well known for army surplus. It is Victorian and its architecture is typical of Methodist Chapels of that period.

Still an important building within the local community, the Chapel still holds small events and offerings to the locals and visitors alike and is always worth a ‘look in’ when passing by!

Are Pre-Paid Funeral Plans a

good idea?

re-paid funeral plans get a very mixed press in the UK so are they really a good investment? The answer we think is yes as long as you buy from a reputable provider that safeguards your money.

Funeral costs have increased by around 70% over the last 10 years. If you purchase a pre-paid plan now, then whatever the cost of your funeral (in hopefully many years to come) then the plan will guarantee to cover your chosen funeral. You can tailor the plan to suit you and most companies offer different levels of plan starting with very simple cremations to more elaborate ceremonies with several cars for mourners. Most plans do only cover cremation in full and only give an allowance towards a burial because the costs are so much higher for burial plots, so do check into that if you are intending to be buried. Plans can cover funerals of all faiths.

A major advantage of having a funeral plan is that you can plan the details of your funeral in advance making it a lot easier and less stressful for your family. Often families don’t discuss funeral wishes as it is thought to be too depressing, so when the time comes, families are often left second guessing what their loved ones would have wanted. It is likely to be such a stressful and upsetting time for your family and friends, so having a plan in place gives you peace of mind knowing that they only have to make one phone call to the company involved and everything will be organised for them.

People are often worried about their money being safe. Reputable funeral plan providers invest the money from their sale of plans in a completely independent and ring-fenced trust fund, overseen by the Financial Services Agency and with independent trustees. Therefore, the money is safe and cannot be used for any other purpose. When choosing your company check that this is the case. From July 2022 all funeral plan providers will be fully regulated by the Financial Services Agency. This will provide further reassurance as all providers must by then be registered in order to continue trading.

At what age is it best to buy a pre-paid funeral plan? Some companies will accept customers of any age and others only sell to the over fifties. It is of course a personal decision, but as the cost of funerals will only increase and therefore the cost of purchasing a plan is also likely to increase then if you think of a plan as like an insurance policy that will protect you against the rising costs of funerals then there is no reason to delay.

One word of advice. If you do take out a pre-paid plan, make sure you do tell your family of its existence and where you keep it. Store the plan in a safe place with perhaps your will and other legal documents. We will cover the advantages and reasons you should make a will in a future edition of Curnow’s Hayle.

Cornwall is the top spot for

I

t has been well publicised how the property market activity has accelerated following the pandemic lock downs initially in 2020 and has been taken to an even higher level this year. To further highlight the impact of this for the South West, and particularly Cornwall, rightmove highlighted that Cornwall as a search location was the most popular of all the millions of searches run on their site, removing London for the first time!.

With people seeking a better quality of life, which for many means being closer to the coast or having more green space around them, being closer to friends/family and potentially working all or some of the time from home, it is Cornwall where people feel that is most likely that they can achieve this. Interestingly, it isn’t all people from the Midlands or South East that are seeking this escape, there are also many that are more local who want to make a change.

In West Cornwall we have really noticed the increase in demand from home buyers and from tenants, both local and further afield, who are keen to enjoy our beautiful region and when looking at Hayle in particular, I feel a sense of pride that people find our town so appealing. We have seen property prices rise as a result of the increase in demand, which for some is concerning, although this is happening across the whole country so it is essential we aren’t left behind in this respect.

Moving forward I cannot see the demand for homes dropping, we are agreeing sales to buyers very quickly and would advise that if people are moving to contact myself or my team to discuss your move at an early stage and not rely on the internet as often properties are out of date by the time they reach websites!
