EXHIBITIONS

FAKE NEWS & LYING PICTURES: POLITICAL PRINTS IN THE DUTCH REPUBLIC

Extended through May 5, 2024

Explore the myriad and complex visual strategies early modern printmakers in the United Provinces used to memorialize historical events, lionize and demonize domestic and international leaders, and form consensus for collective action.

Dutch printmakers experimented with graphic visual language in a daring and subversive fashion. They supplemented conventions and tropes inherited from medieval and Renaissance maps, city views, book illustrations, news prints, and polemical prints and established new forms of expression. Through mercantile and diplomatic channels, Dutch political prints transcended national and temporal boundaries to make a lasting impact.

This exhibition, curated by Maureen Warren, is organized by Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Fake News and Lying Pictures is sponsored in part by the Getty Foundation through its initiative, The Paper Project Prints and Drawings Curatorship in the 21st Century; Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York; Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation: Netherland-America Foundation; Historians of Netherlandish Art.

JACKSONVILLE’S NORMAN STUDIOS: MOVIE POSTERS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION

Extended through July 7, 2024

In the early 1920s, Richard Norman, a white man, succeeded at producing low budget yet polished and entertaining Black cast films out of his production studio located in nearby Arlington. His productions featured Black actors as cowboys, pilots, and businessmen in romance, mystery, and action films.

This exhibition was organized by the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens.

SPORTING FASHION: OUTDOOR GIRLS 1800 TO 1960

Through May 19, 2024

The first exhibition to explore the evolution of women’s sporting attire in Western fashion, Sporting Fashion looks at the extraordinary impact of new technologies and evolving social mores on women’s clothing for sport. Inspired by a circa 1946 wool scarf inscribed with the word "Outdoorgirl" and featuring illustrations of women engaged in thirteen different sporting activities, this exhibition charts the cultural and material developments that allowed women to make their way outdoors.

Examining the competing priorities of style, function, and propriety, Sporting Fashion reconstructs a material history of women in sport through the garments and accessories that enabled them to participate, compete, and excel. 19th-century bathing and bicycling garments alongside 20thcentury apparel for boxing and airplane piloting demonstrate the modernity, individuality, and mobility of the "new woman" and connect to women’s continued fight for equality.

This exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts and FIDM Museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Los Angeles

Support for the national tour is provided by the AFA’s Gold Medal Circle: Elizabeth Belfer, Stephanie Borynack Clark, Ashleigh Fernandez, Lee White Galvis, Stephanie R. LaNasa, Merrill Mahan, Clare E. McKeon, Jennifer New, Angela Timashev, and Victoria E. Triplett.

The Cummer Museum’s collection contains many works on paper, but since these can be easily and irreversibly damaged by both natural and artificial lights, our works on paper need to “rest” in storage for long stretches of time rather than being on regular display. Please enjoy some of our favorite works in the collection that have come out of the vault for this exhibition organized by the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. Installation

MICK NAMARARI TJAPALTJARRI: MYSTERIES THAT REMAIN

May 17, 2024 – January 15, 2025

One of Australia’s most acclaimed Indigenous artists, Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri was a founder of the Western Desert art movement. Mysteries that Remain is an important survey of Namarari’s work, featuring paintings on canvas and board from 1971-1990. It reveals the depth and complexity of Namarari’s artistic experiments as he restlessly strove to present the ancestral narratives of his desert homelands in new and innovative ways. Drawn from the extensive holdings of Namarari’s work in the Kluge-Ruhe Collection at the University of Virginia, Mysteries that Remain tracks Namarari’s progress from his iconographic and ritually explicit works of the 1970s to more abstracted landscapes of the 1990s. It shows Namarari to be an artist who grasped the creative challenge of painting for the art market while never losing sight of the ancestral underpinnings of his country. In turning our focus to Namarari’s art, we might see this reserved figure more clearly. And despite their alluring colors and designs, these paintings retain their mystery, hinting at the spiritual world beyond the painted image. This exhibition sheds new light on this enigmatic and important artist as he moved from detailed figurative works through to grand abstractions. A quiet, reserved man, this exhibition places Namarari in his rightful place as contemporary master. This exhibition is organized by the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia.
