During the annual Festival, students engage in art viewing, interactive live music storytelling, and hands-on artmaking activities throughout the entire Museum campus, including the galleries, gardens, and studios.

BEFORE THE IN-PERSON FESTIVAL Teachers received an Educator Resource Packet listing each art stop with information about selected artworks, activities for the classroom, and other resources. Additionally, teachers received a social story to share with their class to help prepare students for what visiting the Museum would be like.

ART STOPS YARN BIRDS Students took inspiration from birds adorning paintings in the Museum’s permanent collection to create their own tactile bird. Building on their fine motor skills and visual motor skills, students selected a bird template, wrapped colorful pieces of yarn in different textures around the template, and added an eye. The different yarn textures provided a variety of sensory experiences.

MIXED MEDIA FLAMINGO Using the horticultural exhibition, Flamboyance! A Topiary Menagerie in the beautiful Cummer Gardens as their inspiration, students made their own flamingo to take home. Students traced the flamingo with a crayon before using colorful watercolors to paint the background. After the background was completed, students glued paper pulp and fresh rosemary onto the body of the flamingo. By using a variety of medium, students activated their sensory cortex, especially smell and touch.

CLAY NESTS Continuing the bird theme, students created their own bird nest to take home. After creating a pinch pot with air dry clay, students incorporated paper and nature materials by pressing them into the nest. The movement students used to pinch the clay to form the pot allowed them to build on both their fine motor skills and visual motor skills.

INTERACTIVE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE WITH ARVID SMITH Students engaged in an interactive musical performance with Arvid Smith, building their auditory skills while listening to instruments and vocals, gross motor skills while moving and clapping, and vocal skills while singing/humming. Arvid had many musically interesting instruments for students to explore and learn about.

ARTMAKING ACTIVITY: NATURE INSPIRED OIL PASTEL PRINTING Art therapist Devon Schlegal, along with museum educator Dima Kroma, led students through a drawing activity that focused on tapping into movements related to how students were feeling.

GOODBYE FEATURING THE PINE CASTLE BAND, THE FLASHBACKS Pine Castle’s band, The Flashbacks, closed out the virtual Festival with their rendition of You’ve Got a Friend in Me. Students built upon their gross motor skills while moving/dancing/clapping and vocal skills while singing/humming to the song.

After the in-person Festival, teachers were sent a survey to share feedback about their experience with registration, the educator resource packet, art stops, student gains, and more. When asked what gains their students made by attending the in-person Festival, teachers were eager to share. Some highlights:

ARVID SMITH Arvid Smith is a multi-instrumentalist who performs on many stringed instruments in a variety of genres. Smith is a composer for an array of mediums, including film, dance, yogic events, and folk styles.

DEVON SCHLEGEL Devon Schlegel is a board-certified art therapist, licensed mental health counselor, abstract artist, and yoga teacher based in Jacksonville, FL. Devon is co-owner and clinical director of Indigo Art Therapy Studio.

THE FLASHBACKS PINE CASTLE BAND Pine Castle provides opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental differences to learn life skills and vocational skills. The Flashbacks is the band of Pine Castle and includes adults who participate in the music program at the center.

JACKSONVILLE DANCE THEATRE Jacksonville Dance Theatre provides dancers trained to aid students to express themselves through creative dance and movement activities. JDT dancers engaged students in the galleries after they completed their Mixed Media Flamingo.

JUST ADD RHYTHM Just Add Rhythm brings people together through drumming. Drum Facilitator, Alisha Ross, greeted groups on the front lawn during the Festival.

STREAMS OF SOUND Streams of Sound utilizes handpan music to reduce stress and promote relaxation. During the Festival, Streams of Sound musicians engaged students in the tranquil Cummer Gardens upon the completion of their Mixed Media Flamingos.
