The School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts (SHEA) is home to a variety of subjects spanning the social sciences, humanities, creative writing, public service, education, and fine arts degrees. We understand that finding a sense of home on campus is important to all students as they make their new life here at CU. Joining a fraternity or sorority is just one of the many ways to connect with other students, get involved, and further develop your leadership skills. Cumberland has five fraternities - Kappa Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Sigma Chi - and three sororities Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Sigma Tau, and Zeta Phi Beta.
Intramural Sports CU‘s intramural sports programs offer fun physical and social opportunities for students who love to play, compete, and stay active. CU organizes sports throughout the year on campus like flag football and basketball in the fall and softball and volleyball in the spring. CU also offers billiards, ping pong, and video gaming tournaments and other recreational activities such as hiking, climbing, paintball, and camping.

As a CU student, you’re not only part of the Phoenix family but the Lebanon community as well. Our campus is at the center of the growing city of Lebanon, where you'll enjoy exploring restaurants, boutique shops, and local businesses. You can catch a movie at the historic Capitol Theatre, enjoy shopping with friends, grab some homemade ice cream, and attend local festivals throughout the year. Heart of the Phoenix
Each fall, we gather to attend the Homecoming football game and see the crowning of the Homecoming Court. The weekend is full of activities and opportunities to show your CU pride.
At Convocation, we write down any fears or concerns we have about the upcoming semester and commit them to the flame. In doing this, we believe we're stronger than the trials we may face and will rise above them.
Memorial Lawn A college campus isn't complete without a central meeting spot. Memorial Lawn, also known as 'The Quad', connects CU's main campus. The Quad is where you’ll see CU come to life. It’s where you’ll experience Welcome Week and other fun student life activities. And weather permitting, Commencement is held on the lawn at the end of the academic year. The Quad brings CU together.
The Learning & Career Commons The LCC is a popular spot on campus. Once a residence hall in the 1960s, the LCC was transformed into a community center where students come to study, meet, hang out, or grab a Starbucks coffee. The LCC is open late to ensure you have a spot to work on group projects and prepare for your exams. Oh yeah, did we mention there's coffee?
Mitchell Student Center The MSC is a hub of activity. The center houses the Phillips Dining Hall, the Barry Bistro, the mailroom, the Phoenix Nest Recreational room, the Blackbox Theater Lab, and the Commuter's Lounge.
The Phoenix Wings Student Mural was painted by Allie Garcia, a CU student who wanted to leave something special for all students to enjoy. It is a popular photo spot on campus, and on the first-year checklist, so make sure to stop by the Mitchell Student Center and strike a pose before the year is over.

Phoenix rally behind 22 NAIA men's and women's athletic teams that rise and compete for conference and national championships. The CU baseball program has won 3 NAIA national championships since 2004, and since 2011, the wrestling and men’s track teams have claimed a total of 4 individual national titles. Men's soccer has won 3 conference championships since 2015, and the men's golf team has been conference champions for the past 3 years. Our women's basketball team excelled to the Final Four in 2013 with an impressive 33-3 record.

We control our costs to maintain a tuition price that is comparable to other private universities and offset tuition by offering financial assistance opportunities for those who qualify. What is financial aid? Financial aid is money to help you pay for educationally-related expenses. Aid can be loans, part-time employment, grants or scholarships, and can come from federal, state, institutional, or private agencies. You can combine these types of aid to help offset the costs of your education.
Start with the FAFSA. Completing your FAFSA is one of the most important things to check off on your to-do list when applying for college. The FAFSA, Free Application for Student Aid, is used to determine if you are eligible for federal, state, school, or even private financial aid. By completing the FAFSA, you're able to apply for federal and state grants, loans, and work studies, as well as school and private scholarships. The FAFSA is your first step for receiving monetary assistance for your entire college career. On average, it takes about 31 minutes to complete the application. Scholarships Academic Your good grades in high school can pay off. Academic scholarships may be awarded to qualified students who have excelled in their previous academic work. These scholarship awards are based on your GPA and standardized testing scores, like your ACT and SAT.

Performance Are you an athlete? Do you play a musical instrument or have other talents in the arts? You may be eligible for a performance scholarship. Performance scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the coach or program director based on proven performance and future potential. You can earn a scholarship for your participation in either athletics or any of our fine arts programs.
Endowed Cumberland has over 100 endowed and annual scholarships established by dedicated alumni and friends. We award over $300,000 in private and endowed scholarships every year. To learn more visit  cumberland.edu/scholarships.
Federal Grants and Loans There are several forms of federal aid available to help you with funding your education. Federal grants do not generally require repayment. Loans do require repayment with interest six months after leaving college. To learn what you can receive in federal grants and loans, you must submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).Â
Tennessee Promise CU accepts more Tennessee Promise students than any other fouryear institution in the state. Tennessee residents have the opportunity to fund the first two years of your college experience using the TN Promise Scholarship at Cumberland University. When you enroll in one of our eight associate degree programs, we help you smoothly transition into one of our bachelor's degree programs. Starting in October, you will be able to file the FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov. You should apply by February 1. You have options for financing your degree at CU, and our team is here to help you make sense of all things financial aid. Learn how you can fund your college education, or schedule a time to connect with one of us at financialaid@cumberland.edu to discuss your options and find what works for you.
Our application opens August 1, and we send decisions out two to three weeks after all application documents have been received and your application is complete. Our recommended deadline is January 15. Applying by this date will guarantee you a decision before spring, which gives you a chance to be fully informed about scholarships and other financial aid options available to you. Personal Review Process: You’re more than a test score. We know that a student shouldn’t just be measured by their test scores or GPA ; that’s why each application is personally and holistically reviewed. This means someone is actually reading it carefully, and we look at the rigor of your curriculum, the trends in your grades, and any supplemental information you provide to give context.
Scholarships: There are many ways you can pay for your college education and receive financial assistance. Explore scholarship opportunities at cumberland.edu/scholarships.
