fter 20 years of organizing the Cumberland Christmas Parade, Ray Turner thought he knew it pretty well. But with the 2014 event, he saw a side of it he had never seen – the finished product. Turner, a retired Virginia State Trooper, stepped down as chairman of the parade committee in 2014, figuring it was time to Turner let someone else take the lead. The parade that was held on Sunday, Dec. 14 along Anderson Highway was the first he has seen start to finish in decades, because usually he was too busy making sure everything ran smoothly. “It’s the first time I got to see it. The new committee has done a great job,” he said. His favorite part was the old cars. “I’m just an old car nut,” he said. Turner was honored in a small ceremony after the parade at the Cumberland Fire Department.
