Man, woman killed in double homicide

Police are investigating the deaths of a Cumberland County woman and a Powhatan County man recently killed in a double homicide that started in Cumberland County.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond on Monday positively identified remains recovered in Mecklenburg County last week as Amy Renee Fabian, 43, of Cumberland, and are i nv e s t i g a t ing her death AMY FABIAN as a homicide, according to the Virginia State Police.

For more than a week before the discovery on Thursday, May 30, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies were searching for Fabian and had narrowed down their search to the South Hill and Mecklenburg County area.

Fabian had not been seen since the body of a man later identified as Matthew T. Broyles, 29, of Powhatan, was discovered in her home in the early hours of Friday, May 24.

UMBERLAND – The Cumberland High School Class of 2019 recently welcomed the next chapter of their lives in a moving ceremony that also hon-

ored one missing from among them.

During the May 17 ceremony closing out the students’ high school careers, special tributes were held to honor a classmate that should have been walking by their side.

tarting with the July 3 edition, The Cumberland Today will become part of the Powhatan Today, but we’re confident an already strong relationship between the two publications will continue to provide the residents of Cumberland County with the news they want and expect.

The Cumberland Today will also maintain a strong relationship with the county through regular updates on its Facebook page. We continue to welcome reader contributions that can be shared with the rest of the county to let them know what is happening each month.

For many traveling to work and other functions along Anderson Highway, a strong connection to Powhatan County already exists. Our goal is to expand on that role.

The staff of The Cumberland Today is grateful to our readers for welcoming us into your community and homes for the last nine and a half years.

This news editor will continue to cover happenings in the county, and sports editor Nick Vandeloecht is committed to coverage in Cumberland County, so he’ll still be seen at various sporting events.

Carolina for first degree murder in relation to Broyles’ death, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. Knisley was arrested later that night after he was involved in a pursuit with Raleigh police. He is awaiting extradition to Virginia, where additional charges are still pending.

Fabian’s body was found with a 2002 Ford F-350 work truck, which had been reported stolen out of Maryland on May 23, in a wooded area off Route 138, less than a mile from Route 1. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office spent the day processing the evidence recovered at the scene.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the sheriff’s offices in Powhatan and Cumberland counties, had been part of coordinated search efforts by air and on the ground to find Fabian since she was discovered missing.

Cumberland County Sheriff Darrell Hodges said that Fabian and Knisley were in a relationship when they lived in Maryland, but they broke up a few weeks ago. Fabian took out a protective order against Knisley in Maryland.

“Apparently he did not abide by that. She came down to stay for a little while with her parents to get away from him. She had only been down here about two and a half weeks,” Hodges said.

The incident began at approximately 3:30 a.m. on May 24, when the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a

homicide occurring at a residence in the 200 block of Mount Airy Lane, Geller said in a news release.

Hodges said Knisley allegedly called another person who lives out of state to say what had happened.

That person called their local 911 center, which reached out and alerted Cumberland, he said.

Upon arriving at the location, deputies found Broyles, but Fabian was missing, Hodges said. Based on the investigation so far, he does not believe she was killed there.

Hodges described Fabian and Broyles as friends who knew each other through their families and only recently reconnected.

The state police issued a Critically Missing Adult Alert for Fabian later that evening and extended it through May 29, well past the standard 12-hour window, at the request of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

During the course of the investigation into the Cumberland County homicide, the South Hill Police Department received a 911 call at about 6:30 a.m. on May 24 from a woman who was walking out to her car at her residence and encountered a male subject, Geller said. The male, who fit Knisley’s description, threatened the woman at gunpoint and stole her 2013 Honda Civic. The man drove off in the Honda Civic. The woman was not injured.

Police captured Knisley in the early morning of Saturday, May 25 in Wake County after he allegedly carjacked a man in Raleigh of his 2009 Toyota Corolla outside a motel. He led Wake County sheriff’s deputies in a brief pursuit before crashing the car and being apprehended.

While in custody in North Carolina, Knisely attempted to

escape, according to a news release from Eric Curry, public information officer for the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. At about 1:45 p.m. on Monday, May 27, Knisley was in the process of being transported to the Wake County Detention Center, to face a fugitive warrant from Carroll County, Maryland. As the deputy was exiting the facility, Knisley complained that the right handcuff was too tight. As the deputy attempted to loosen the cuff, Knisley, pushed the deputy with his shoulder and fled.

An unidentified man assisted the deputy to detain Knisley before additional deputies could arrive. As Knisley was led to the patrol car, it was at that time that he admitted that he was a “murderer and didn’t want to live any longer,” according to the release.

Cumberland County will have to do a full extradition process to bring Knisley back to Virginia, Hodges said.

In addition to the charges he faces in Virginia and North Carolina, Knisley is wanted for stealing a vehicle and weapons in Maryland.

“Due to the fact that he committed crimes in three states, it is a little more complicated than just going to another jurisdiction and picking somebody up,” Hodges said.

Other than a state trooper who was killed in February in Cumberland while part of a task force executing a search warrant, the county has not had a homicide in 11 years, Hodges said. In addition to the hard work of the many local, state and federal agencies who helped with the case, he especially commended his employees, who “stepped up and put in an unbelievable amount of hours.”

SYLESTINE DAVIS Sylestine H. Booker Davis, 91, of Cumberland, and Roselle, New Jersey, left for Heaven on Friday, April 26, 2019. Eldest daughter of Mrs. Beatrice J. Booker and Mr. Ardee James Booker, Sylestine was predeceased by her husband, Mr. Alfred Davis; survived by three sons, Alfred Jr. (Dianna), Darnell Pierre and Ardee Frizzell; a grandson, Alfred III; sisters, Alease B. Colona, Shirley B. Higgs, Yvonne B. Brooks; and a host of other family and friends. A viewing was held at 10 a.m. and a service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, at Tearwallet Baptist Church, 1869 Anderson Highway, Cumberland.

LINDSEY BROWN Lindsey Leon "Lefty" Brown's first inning began on July 21, 1950, in Cumberland, when he was born to Willie Gordon, and Aretha Mayo Brown, both of whom preceded him in death. The couple had five sons: Walter, Paul, Barry, Lindsey, and Allen. When it came to living and loving life, Leon hit hard. He had a zest for life that remained with him until he completed the ninth inning on Sunday, May 19, 2019. Inning two began in the Buckingham County Public School system, where Leon was educated. He graduated from high school in 1968. During his school years, Lindsey developed a love for being outdoors. From fishing and hunting to playing sports and eventually sharing his cooking skills with loved ones, Lindsey was a true outdoors man and marveled with great anticipation at anything that kept him outside. An adventurer in spirit, Leon's third inning found him migrating to Jersey City, New Jersey, where he joined his brothers Walter, Paul (preceded him in death) and Barry (who preceded him in death). In Jersey City, he took on his first job at Westinghouse Elevator Services, moved into his first apartment, and assumed the first responsibilities of adulthood. In 1969, his love for outdoors compelled him to get involved with sports playing centerfield for the "all-Black" Jersey City Eagles Baseball Team. Wearing uniform #13, he was skilled at position and because he was handed, given, given the nickname "Lefty" by his teammates. He also continued working at Westinghouse. On July 23, 1971, he becomes a father when his first child, Michelle Altrovise Brown, was born. Parenting was now, the No. 1 priority for the doting father. In 1973, he attended a social event where he met and was immediately smitten by Gloria Adele

Malloy. He relentlessly pursued her until she finally consented to date him. After two years of courtship the couple married on December 26, 1975. The newlyweds relocated to Sanford, Florida, where Lefty’s second daughter, Lindsay Kaliala Brown, was born. Lefty and Gloria lived in several cities including Jersey City, New Jersey, Sanford Florida, and Atlanta Georgia. They chose Richmond, Virginia as their permanent residence. The Browns enjoyed a blissful union that spanned 44 years. The couple enjoyed entertaining, shopping and exquisite clothing, attending sports events, and participating in family gatherings. His family was the love of his life. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Gloria M. Brown; two daughters, Michelle Altrovise Ingram (Curtis) and Lindsay Kaliala Brown (Lynn); two brothers, Walter V. Brown (Mary) and Allen Cleo Brown; two nephews, Walter "Terry" Brown Jr., and Darrell Brown; one niece, Alberta Medina; two grandchildren, Curtis Jordan Ingram and Mia Angela Ingram; two great-grandchildren, Adon J. Wallace and Carter Isa Ingram; a host of other relatives and friends. A visitation was held from noon to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 27 at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home, 64 Cartersville Road, Cumberland. A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28 at Petersville Baptist Church, 3330 Petersville Church Road, New Canton. Interment church cemetery.

MATT BROYLES Matt Broyles, 29, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019. He is survived by his parents, Tom and Jacqui Broyles of Cumberland; brothers, Logan Broyles of North Carolina, Michael Broyles of Cumberland; sister, Catie Broyles of Powhatan; paternal grandparents, Haskell and Patricia Broyles of Wytheville; maternal grandparents, Bobby and Olivia Goin of Glen Allen; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. FRANCES DYSON Frances Caldwell Dyson, 78, of Richmond, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. She was preceded in death by her par-

ents; sister, Barbara Caldwell Scott; and her daughter, Robin Dyson Varnier. She is survived by her son, Jeff Dyson (Kim) of Cumberland; grandson, Justin Dyson; and several nieces and nephews. Frances was a graduate of Manchester, Class of 1959, worked for over 30 years for the Virginia Treatment Center, and was a member of Ramsey United Methodist Church. ALTA SOUTHALL Alta Ruth Asal Southall, 100, of Cumberland County, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2019. At the time of her death, she resided at The Woodland in Farmville. She was born on March 18, 1919, to Wiley and Lola Horton in Carroll County. She is survived by five children, Otis, Ruth Wright (Virgil), Johnny, Wilbur (Sandra), Carolyn Lester; and daughter-in-law, Faye Asal. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, 32 great-great grandchildren, three great-great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Phillip Daniel Asal; and her husband, Charles Southall of three years; her son, Joe Asal; two daughters-in-law, Brenda and Jerry Asal; two brothers, Ray and James Horton; two sisters, Gladys Patterson and Mamie Leonard; and her two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was retired from Craddock and Terry Shoe Co. She and her husband, Phillip, were parents to several foster boys. She was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church. She spent much of her time quilting and certainly enjoyed her flowers and vegetable gardens. There was always ample fruits and vegetables canned for family and friends.

It was also a great pleasure to share her flowers with anyone that shared her interests. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 27 at Antioch United Methodist Church, with interment following in the church cemetery. With the help of a four-game win streak early in the month of May, the Cumberland varsity baseball team reached a 10-9 record after May 16 and prior to the Region 1B tournament.

In its four-game winning surge, Cumberland took down Buckingham in back-to-back days, 13-4 and 5-1, and did the same to Franklin, 4-2 and 10-2. Keynote triumphs for the Dukes earlier in the season included a 12-11 shootout of a victory over Amelia County on April 23 and a 1-0 duel won over Prince Edward County on April 18.

Cumberland won its first round of regionals by shutting-out Rappahannock County 5-0.

Cumberland pitcher Jordan Smith tossed a four-hit, complete-game shutout victory and struck out 10 batters.

The Dukes fought hard at William Campbell in the Region 1B semifinals on Thursday, May 30, but William Campbell earned the 5-2 victory and a berth in the state tournament.

Cumberland Baseball ended the year on a winning season of 11-10.

Cumberland’s Devon Reed-Rivera won the 300 meter hurdles championship in the Region 1B outdoor track and field meet held May 20 at Stonewall Jackson High School in Quicksburg.

The senior’s winning time was 43.32 seconds.

Also in the Region 1B meet, Rivera-Reed’s fellow teammate and senior Jalen Foster won the boys’ triple jump championship on a distance of 40’ while Cumberland senior Christian Jackson won both the boys’ discus (124’1”) and the boys’ shot put (44’10”).

Cumberland freshman Shamoni Bartee won the Region 1B championships in both the girls’ 100 meter dash (13.32 seconds) and the 400m dash (1 minute and 6.04 seconds).

Bear Creek Lake State Park is partnering with Cumberland County Public Library to participate in the return of an exciting spring series, Park Ranger Adventures.

The Cumberland Visitor’s Center and Museum (Old Clerk’s Office) has a new exhibit on display. The exhibit features one of the McRae dresses on display along with the Chinese Kimono from Paul McRae, who was ambassador to China. The museum also has displayed pictures and information on the Narrow Gauge Railroad that ran through Cumberland County. Another point of in-

terest might be its display of products from Cumberland County dairies during the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The keynote speaker is retired Army Major General Kenneth Bowra whose service from 1970 to 2003 included combat tours in Vietnam, Grenada, DESERT STORM and Somalia.

Cumbeland County Public Schools will be participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided for all children up to 18 years of age free of charge.

The service began on June 3 and will continue through July 16 at Cumberland County High School. Breakfast is offered from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Lunch will be from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The ceremony featured speeches from valedictorian Abigail Heath and salutatorian Autumn Holman. Class president Nadia Elasha gave the welcome, and SGA president Brandon White offered the class reflections.

In their speeches, Heath and Holman both focused on thanking all of the people who helped the Class of 2019 on their journeys to this moment and reflected on the obstacles they have overcome.
