International 2011 is one of 12 Lincolnshire projects taking part in the Igniting Ambition Lincolnshire Showcase 2011 programme. Igniting Ambition is an East Midlands programme funded by Legacy Trust UK, ERDF and the East Midlands Development Agency, with the support of Arts Council

England, Lincolnshire County Council and many others, and it’s making a real cultural difference across the region.

The first day of beam! has quickly become an anticipated must-see occasion as the streets of Lincoln are brought alive to the wondrous sights and sounds of street

performers. For 2011 children and young people have been working with national street theatre company ‘Mark Mark Productions’ to devise a slap stick Olympics-style opening ceremony where things just don’t go as well as they were planned!

Before you start to look through the many events on offer at beam! International 2011 you must be sure to visit Lincoln by the Sea this summer! Yes, Lincoln’s very own beach…

Take a trip to the seaside in the heart of Lincoln! Back by popular demand, City Square will be transformed into a beach, along with deck-chairs, rides, and lots and lots of golden sunshine!

Bring your bucket and spade and get making those sandcastles!

Late Night

Shopping On 7 July, Lincoln’s stores will open their doors to a new permanent late night trading scheme, with extended hours running until 8pm every Thursday.

To mark the start of this new initiative a variety of activities are taking place during the evening (don’t miss the fire-eater!), and plenty of discount vouchers and offers available. There will also be the chance to enter a competition to win a late night shopping spree!

Joel Stickley, Lincolnshire’s Poet Laureate will be reading his work at this event.

Local college Bishop Grosseteste will be bringing 4 street theatre groups to the festival. Watch out for lifeguards, postmen, and gnomes!

Set to lively African music, the show progresses through a series of powerful and graceful acrobatic and dance routines.

Faceless Company Speedy Snails (UK)

A couple of sporty snails try to break the world record for the 50m dash. Inspired by Olympic ideals of athleticism and healthy competition, READY…STEADY…SLOW! is a versatile, accessible and entertaining performance for all the family.

Jestival The Street Amigos (Lincoln/Mexico!)

A multi-arts street performance this male guitar duo mix displays of musical virtuosity with moments of sublime ridiculousness. Also don’t miss Jestival’s Circus workshops.

knit2getherlincs (Lincoln)

knit2getherlincs will be reclaiming the Mayfield Bridge by covering it in a colourful knitted wrapping. Come and help us yarn-bomb the city centre! All contributors will be credited on the final work. You will also be able to have a go at lots of different knitting techniques; finger knitting, french knitting, extreme knitting, crochet and remind yourself how to cast on and off!

Mark Mark Productions Chefs des Chansons (UK)

From the country that brought you baguettes, berets and brie we present these patriotic, partisan pastry-chefs. A travelling trio of comedic characters, who improvise, vocalise, romanticise and scandalise! ‘Le jour de gloire est arrive!’

Nakupelle Monkey Business (Finland/USA)

Italo wants to make some money. He’s got ideas, a pocketful of tuttifrutti and a street organ he bought on ebay. What he doesn’t have is a cooperative monkey. Will she dance? Will this monkey ever get funky? Nakupelle’s new show is part slapstick, part Italian Commedia, classic European Street Theatre and a bit of the Animal Channel.

There’s horrible history lurking around every corner so why not join Rhubarb Theatre on a weird and wonderful walk around Lincoln’s rotten Roman remains. You might even find out where the great Roman generals Marcus & Sparkus went shopping! Meet outside the Odeon Cinema, The Brayford. Walks limited to 20 people on a FCFS basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Zanzibar (France)

Zanzibar le crazy French man can be seen throwing his 3 diabolos like rockets in the air or juggling 3 knives on a 10 foot ladder! This orange and black frog entertains in French or in English with his outrageous accent. Danger, skills and comedy guaranteed!

Also featuring Lincoln’s own MAD4 Residents Gone Solo and Voices Together Choir along with artsNK youth dance groups!

Water came with the rain and the hidden garden was suddenly brought into life. Fountains and basins were filled. Fruit, leaves, trees and plants have dusted off their colours and the rainbow appeared high up in the sky. In the middle of the hidden garden, there is someone who is looking for water.

The yellow of corn, the deep red of tomatoes, the purple of flowers...

“Colours of water” is a play made of lights, sounds, images and movements, where words fade into the background to accompany the action.

Vision Mechanics from Scotland will perform the well-loved classic a Frog Princess.

Based on a Russian folktale about a prince who marries a strange Frog Bride the show combines storytelling and puppetry in this show full of warmth and humour, for audiences aged 3 –8 years old and their families. The Russian tale tells of three brothers who are ordered by their father to find a bride.

Each prince must shoot an arrow into the air, and marry whoever finds it.

Photography Workshop 7 July / 4.30pm – 7.30pm Lincoln Drill Hall / Free Places Limited to 6 The workshop uses as its starting point the work of Rankin. Synonymous with dynamic and intimate portraiture, the photographer Rankin has shot everyone from royalty to refugees.

Earning a reputation for capturing the character and spirit of his subjects, Rankin quickly became a formidable force in photography, shooting Brit-pop bands including Pulp and Blur and darlings of pop such as Kylie and Madonna.

Lincolnshire-based photographer Andy Weekes works across the globe. His work has been seen in top end magazines and highpowered marketing campaigns. Andy leads today’s practical workshop. Bring a camera if you have one! beam! 2011 | 11

Futures is a four-piece rock and received critical acclaim whilst remaining unsigned. In June 2010 the band signed to Mercury Records. They went in the studio in February 2011 to record with Grammy award winning producer Gil Norton (The Pixies, Foo Fighters) for their debut album, set for release in summer 2011.The band headlined the Kerrang stage at the Slam Dunk Festival at Leeds and Hatfield. The partnership, which in Lincolnshire has been managed by creative consultancy cultural solutions UK, has invested in productions which demonstrate innovation, entrepreneurship and excellence and make connections across the three counties. Igniting Ambition Festival 2011 will provide new opportunities for local communities to participate, engage in and enjoy events.
