Ten years ago, Art Month started as a small collaborative initiative to promote a week of cultural activities. It is now a thriving month packed full of creative programming, including arts education, gallery events, Emerald Coast Theatre Company productions, Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach, Art in Public Spaces (AIPS) exhibitions, the ArtsQuest Fine Arts Festival, live music performances, art walks, Dine + Dive (a fundraiser for the Underwater Museum of Art), and more.
Some of these events are ticketed or require an admission fee, and I encourage you to buy that ticket and attend as much of these special programs as your heart desires. However, many of Walton County’s best art offerings only require you to simply put on a pair of comfortable walking shoes, hop on a bike, or take a drive and enjoy them free of charge.
The CAA worked with partners to recently complete an AIPS project at the county’s first pedestrian underpass at Inlet Beach. The underpass is not only a safe passage across Hwy. 98; it is an inspiring exhibit featuring ten original murals that represent the power of connection. Anchoring the underpass are two sculptures, replicas of Common Chord and The Grayt Pineapple that are included in the Underwater Museum of Art.
Just to the west of the underpass, stroll through the town of Rosemary Beach and see its sculpture exhibition featuring 15 pieces, some part of the town’s permanent collection and learn about each by downloading an app for an audio tour. Down the road, Alys Beach is home to a thoughtfully curated collection of 11 sculptures, including Recline in Blue by Indian artist Dhruva Mistry. The Watersound® Monarch Art Trail is an experience that stretches for one mile from Scenic Hwy. 30A to Hwy. 98 and includes eight original sculptures inspired by the migration of the Monarch butterfly through our area. Just to the north in Watersound® Town Center, check out the
original mural at The Pavilion created by Walton County’s 2024 Artist of the Year Sarah Page.
Murals and other public art can be discovered in many public and private spaces in communities along 30A and beyond, including in SEASIDE®, Grayton Beach, and Grand Boulevard. Further north up Hwy. 331 interactive and beautiful murals can be found in downtown DeFuniak Springs and at the Walton County Fairgrounds. Even further north along Hwy. 83 is a grouping of eclectic found-object sculptures welcoming you to Glendale.
This list does not cover all of the amazing public art in Walton County, but we are working to catalog most of it on our website where we will host an interactive map making these special places easy to find and enjoy, along with a directory for artists who work in the public art realm.
The CAA’s vision is for a thriving Walton County where everyone has access to and experiences the power of the Arts. Public art is the best way to bring art to all, and its existence makes our community a more inspiring and memorable home and destination. I hope you celebrate every minute of Art Month but beyond the month of May, get out to explore something creative every single day.

The Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA) of Walton County, proudly announces Gerard Frank as the Featured Artist for the 37th Annual ArtsQuest Fine Arts Festival. Frank’s custom artworks—Clarence and Alabama, Great Minds, and One Man Show— will be showcased on all ArtsQuest marketing materials. The festival, a beloved May tradition, will take place May 3-4, 2025, at Grand Boulevard Town Center’s North Park.
Frank, a professional artist for 26 years, holds the distinction of being the first living artist included in the permanent collection of the Anna Lamar Switzer Center for the Visual Arts. His work is also featured in The Lofts Gallery in Pensacola, FL, and a prestigious Central Park West lobby in New York City. His collectors span the U.S., from Miami to NYC’s SoHo district to Long Beach, CA, and internationally in Germany. In addition to his fine art career, Frank has dedicated over two decades to tattoo artistry, owning and operating his own shop while exhibiting in multiple galleries across the country.
A self-taught painter with a background in commercial screen printing, Frank has worked with clients such as HewlettPackard, Boeing, and Lucent Technologies. His expertise in printing on diverse materials—including plastics, metals, wood, and glass—helped shape his abstract style. Encouraged by his wife, Teri, he continues to explore creative boundaries, blending fine art and tattoo artistry.
“As humans we have a desire to belong to something. As artists, we exist in a paradox—trusting our process even when it separates us from the group,” says Frank. “When people connect with your work as deeply as you connect with creating it, you’ve achieved a fundamental human desire: belonging. Being named the Featured Artist for ArtsQuest 2025 is an incredible honor, reinforcing my passion and obligation to keep creating.”

creative adult is the child who survived.”
– Ursula K. Le Guin
Most adult artists would say they’ve been drawing since they were kids. For many of us, somewhere between the innocence of childhood and the burdens of adulthood, we stopped playing with art. The adult artist simply kept going. Like any skill, anyone with enough time and interest can learn the techniques of drawing and painting.
My artistic interests were encouraged from a young age. My dad, an adept draftsman, would draw with me regularly, teaching me step-by-step how to draw Looney Toons’ Yosemite Sam and how to turn squares into cubes by adding a few lines. I also made my own pop-up holiday cards for friends and family. I became known as the crafty kid, and my mother was convinced I’d be a greeting card designer one day.
Once I entered high school and college, art fell to the wayside as a hobby. Out of fear of becoming the dreaded “starving artist”, I opted for a safe advertising and communications degree. Despite my best efforts, the creative hook never fully lost its hold, leading me to discover graphic design as the perfect blend of artistry and business. Since then, I’ve designed hundreds of materials for a wide range of clientele. In 2018, through the encouragement of a friend, I submitted a mural design concept for a chance to participate in the St. Petersburg SHINE Mural Festival. I was chosen as one of four local artists, and have been painting murals ever since.

Sharing the Impact of the Underwater Museum of Art
On April 7th, CAA and SWARA team members had the pleasure of introducing the fourth-grade students at Ohana Institute to the Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) and shared the magic behind the underwater sculptures and the impact they have on our ecosystem.
It was great to see them dive deep into the creative process and discuss the trials and errors they’ve encountered along the way.
A big thank you to Walt Hartley and Allison Wickey for sharing their knowledge and passion and enthusiasm for protecting our local ecosystems.

We believe strongly in this project and have supported the underpass from the beginning. As Vice President of Community Affairs for our company, Leigh Moore spent a great deal of her time pursuing infrastructure projects throughout the region. Although we don’t have any developments near the underpass, during her time with us she worked diligently on this project. Implementing good pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure improvements throughout the county is critical, and this is a truly impactful facility. Making places more walkable and cyclist-friendly leads to better health outcomes for citizens, reduced vehicular traffic on roads and a wider array of transportation alternatives available to people, which are all vital to a community’s wellbeing. We also feel the arts are a critical part of any community and enhance quality of life. We have supported the CAA for many years in multiple ways, so sponsoring a mural in the underpass made a lot of sense to us. One of the primary tenets of our mission is that our projects don’t detract from the wonderful natural environment we enjoy here in Walton County. This mural reflects upon the important connection between humans and nature, so it is a perfect fit for us. We believe the underpass will save lives, and the public art components of the project will increase its usage. This unique interplay between public safety and the arts is making a real difference for our community, and we couldn’t be more excited about it.
- Keith Howard | Howard Group
by Francisco Adaro
Sponsoring the Adaro mural at the underpass was an exciting opportunity for 30A to contribute to the growth and vibrancy of our community in a unique and meaningful way. Art has an incredible ability to spark conversations and connect people, and this mural is a perfect representation of that power. By supporting the creation of this stunning piece, we are helping to beautify the space and make it a welcoming landmark for both locals and visitors alike.
At 30A, we believe in the power of creativity to foster connections and reflect the spirit of our community. This mural captures that essence, showcasing not just the beauty of our area but the stories and shared experiences that bring us all together. We hope that as people pass by, they are inspired to reflect on the importance of relationships, creativity, and community.
Ultimately, our goal is for this mural to spark conversation, inspire individuals, and encourage engagement with art in their own lives. It’s about creating connections through creativity—something we believe is fundamental to both the art world and the fabric of our community.
We’re thrilled to support this project and look forward to seeing how it will continue to resonate with everyone who encounters it. The Adaro mural will stand as a testament to the creativity and connection that define the 30A experience.
- Logan Escobar | The 30A Company
by Andy Saczynski
As a business owner directly impacted in a positive way by the tunnel, supporting this project was an easy decision. When the opportunity arose to sponsor a local artist mural, especially one by Andy Saczynski—it was a no-brainer. Andy’s work is a favorite of ours, and I’m proud to have several of his pieces in my home.
Market 30A, located just east of the tunnel exit, has benefited from the improved accessibility, making it easier and safer for both locals and visitors to explore our store. This addition enhances convenience for all who visit our one-stop shop at the beach.
We appreciate the Cultural Arts Alliance and their commitment to supporting local artists and raising funds for important causes. As Market 30A celebrates 10 years in Inlet Beach, we remain dedicated to championing local artists and causes that contribute to our thriving community.

By Kristy Holditch
A silk thread, delicate and thin. And another. Then another, and another still.
Each its own texture and shade. Like a book of paint samples fanning out in a myriad of hues.
With names like Eggshell White and Retro Avocado, Nautical Blue and Dusty Rose, we’re left with a choice.
One that’s comprised of a million teeny, tiny choices.
And add up to the biggest one of all, Who are we really?
And who am I?
By Ali Diamond
She was not made of feathers, but of thread— each stitch a small defiance, each seam a promise: I will not unravel.
The world had burned her once— a girl of thirteen clutching her father’s shoe left by the door, still dusty from the bank’s marble floor. The chickens scratched uselessly at the barren yard; the silence grew teeth.
But listen:
With these colors and strands to paint and pull as we please. Please, I beg––into the void that is my thoughts. The void that is this often jaded and lonely world. Please choose.
Please choose the right path. Though how will I know?
How will my neighbors and strangers, my friends and my foes?
If these threads we toil and tug will take us to the places we’re meant to go?
Will stitch and sew and weave and grow, into the tapestry that is we?
That is me?
What if somewhere out there, it’s not only us, but all the versions of us we never knew?
What if those threads had continued onward?
What if those pigments had been preserved?
And we never have to wonder, what all we could have been?
how she took the needle like a wand, how she hummed the hymns her father loved to drown out the creditors’ knocks, spun gold from the scraps left in the alley bins, her back bent over the borrowed sewing machine as if to say, See? I am making a world from what remains.
By dawn, she’d fashioned a cloak of a hundred colors— not to hide the scorch marks, but to teach the children how to wear their scars like constellations.
You too, she would say, her voice rough as unbleached muslin, cupping my face in her hands— hands that knew the weight of hunger, the sharpness of thimbles, the way grief circles back like a dropped spool rolling under the couch.
And though I could not meet her eyes, heavy with the smoke of memory, I knew: she was seeing the fire in me before I knew how to name it.
Sometimes now, when the wind lifts the curtains like a ghost of her old skirts, I press my palm to the fabric and whisper: Teach me how to mend without breaking.
The needle flashes in my mind— a tiny, obedient lightning. The thread, still trailing.

At the CAA we believe that everyone is inherently creative. We asked Michaiah and Deborah Smoots to share his introduction to the Arts.
We were raised in a multi-creative, military family where art was a part of life. From an early age, we were surrounded by every kind of expression: painting, storytelling, songwriting, filmmaking, decorating, you name it! Each new place we lived exposed us to new cultures and art forms, but it was growing up in Hawaii that deeply impacted our creative lens. The island’s natural beauty of Aloha and Ohana helped stir the raw creative expression within us.
For me, Michaiah, art became a lifeline. When my dad was deployed, I needed a way to process what I felt, and art helped me do that. Whether it was drawing, writing, or playing guitar, I was able to see myself not as a victim of the moment, but as the victor of my own story. That’s
when I fell in love with mixed-media art. Every piece I create now tells a layered story that reflects what I’ve overcome and the beauty I still see.
And for me, Deborah, I found healing and a voice in storytelling through media, animation, drawing, and singing. I used to ask, “Why me?” but now I say, “Wow, me.” Like—wow, it’s a blessing that I got to walk through what I did! It gave me another layer to add to my storytelling, another lens to reach others with truth, love, and creativity.
This year, we were honored to receive a SOFO Filmmaker Grant, allowing us to fuse all of these art forms into a short film, which includes a mixed medium art piece we created specifically for the film. This short film invites viewers to look a little deeper beyond the surface of the creative things that we call beautiful and to find a story within it.
